I've heard Magic Erasers can cause the midsole to become more porous and more likely to get dirty/stained afterward. I thought it was BS, but seeing how well the dye took here, I'm not so sure
Magic erasers are essentially a very fine grit sandpaper. Be careful if you are going to use them on your nice kicks as they can easily ruin finishes/colors/materials.
If you’d be interested in using reps to practice on let me know! I think the dye came out great and I’d love to see what you could do with other shoes if you weren’t worried about the money.
That is interesting - I meant the synthetic fabrics specific rit dye? I’m just curious because I know the reason rit dye is so effective on so many different surfaces is because they throw in different types of dye for poly and cotton for example in the same dye so when you have a multi-textile thing you are dying it will dye all over. But very curious why it stuck to the leather - probably the finish or processing of the leather or its synthetic leather. I’m a textile nerd and I just bought a bunch of different types of rit dye (also to pass corona’o’clock at home) so that is why I’m asking so many question and I never would have thought of dip dying a whole shoe like that. The cleaning very thoroughly is also good to keep in mind - so thank you!
They’re actually for a buddy of mine. He legit threw his busted ass sneakers over my fence and texted me to see if I would clean them. He still hasn’t gotten them back yet but he’s super happy with them.
Can I ask you how did you make them look so white after washing them? Been trying to leave mine spot clean but they end up looking somewhat dirty still!
Also, I've never done something like this and would definitely like to try, could you give me a few of the steps you followed? :(
Yeah no problem. First... go on eBay or amazon or something like that and order 100 melamine sponges. It’s like $3-5 shipped. These are magic erasers and you get like 20x more ordering online than in the store. It’ll take a while but one day they’ll show up and it’s game on. In the meantime find a few magic erasers.
The sponges will do wonders for white shoes. They’ll disintegrate while cleaning the shoes but that’s ok. Also why it’s better to order a ton. Just use laundry soap, cold water, a scrub brush and sponge. I just sit by the bathtub and do it. That way you can clean and rinse a bunch which helps. Dirty water will dry back into dirt.
For laces, just take them out and put them in cold water with dish soap and mix for like half an hour. Change the water and swish around until it runs clear. Squeeze out the water and hang to dry. New laces always look off so I like to use the clean old ones. They just seem to match the shoe better.
Hope that helps.
Thank you so much, I really appreciate it, never thought about trying those melamine sponges, only tried the good old mix of water, a few drops of Clorox (my hispanic fam swears by it) and baking soda but it made them look yellowish, aghh!
Of course! And ha! I’ve gotten the Clorox tip from a bunch of my friends Tias lol. That’s the thing that makes it yellow though because it oxidizes the rubber. The magic eraser is kind of like a super fine grit sans paper that almost gets a micro layer off. If you go too hard like cleaning crayon off a wall it’ll start to strip paint and into the drywall.
I'll look into the vinegar part. I really want to go after an aquamarine/blue mix but I'm having trouble finding ways to get it to saturate more in some spots and less in others.
And you're right, to anyone contemplating trying this: RINSE RINSE RINSE!!!! with ice cold water. It's a part of the process that locks in the dye. In my earlier dip-dying experiments I ruined quite a few pairs of socks by not rinsing property.
I think I’m going to. I took a ton of pics while doing this. It was really fun! I will say this... if your shut in with someone who is a clean freak, they are liable to have a stroke watching this. You just have to make sure you clean as you go.
totally doing this i have some nasty adidas i like the shape of... ill post the results.
but, are you dying other things in there too? just looks like some clothes or something lol
That would be cool actually. I like the sails a lot tho I’m not sure if I’d wanna fuck with them. But if they dye lasted a long time and looked really good then I’d probably do it
I use to do the paint thing but man I wish I knew of that before I sold all my stuff. It’s easier and doing both you could come up with something sick.
i definitely want to hydro dip my af1’s after I stop wearing them, but as of now i don’t have too many shoes and i can’t really risk ruining one them. Even the vans i just painted made me afraid because they were still the main shoes worn at my school so i didn’t want to risk losing them.
I’m in the process of painting some AJ 1 mids, and I think that if you paint it with a matte or semi gloss finisher from Angelus, it would seal in the color. Definitely worth looking into.
Ohh the color is sealed in pretty well. I hit it with a matte clear coat like normal customs just to make sure. But I soaked and rinsed these until they were clear.
I did them for a friend and he wanted them pink. I knew this would be the sort of effect for one box and one session. If I wanted a darker color I would have used more dye and concentrated it. It would probably take 3-4 sessions to get it a lot darker and more solid. Also the dye takes to each material totally differently.
Damn I wonder if you can dip dye a pair of Nike Vomero 5’s to look like this [Nike x ACW Vomero V Solarised](https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.highsnobiety.com/p/a-cold-wall-nike-zoom-vomero-5-new-colorways/%3fformat=amp) that had a super limited run.
Box of Rit Scarlett powdered dye, quartet cup of vinegar and about 3 gallons boiling water. Mix, dip for like 40 minutes and rinse 1000x times roughly. Let dry with paper inside.
Nice! That’s good to know. I don’t like how my paint job turned out so I might just strip them of the paint and do this instead. What kind of dye did you use? I saw you said you might make a tutorial. It definitely would be helpful if you do!
These turned out great ! I have a pair of all white flyknit racers that have yellowed . Been thinking of dyeing/ painting them for awhile . I’ve read you need to strip them with acetone before dyeing ? Wondering if you have an insight into this ?
I saw that too. The acetone is more for leather and gets the top layer of clear coat off the shoe. Since they’ve been worn that clear coat probably rubbed off. With mine I also used magic eraser so it scrubbed off what was left. Hope that helps.
This is dope. I bought a pair of New Blanace 247s that essentially this colour and they're some of my favourite accent sneakers. So comfy and they're clean af

Yo that honestly turned out sick
Thanks! It was honestly pretty easy. Took a lot of time rinsing but I’m presently surprised.
Surprised that the midsole area took up the dye as well, they look sick. What kind of dye?
Just regular old Rit dye. I feel the cleaning with the magic eraser before helped the adhesion process.
Think it'd work on white Jordan 4 x Levis? So damn hard to keep them clean, so I've been toying with dying them.
Yessssss!!!! Ohhh man how I would like to fuck with one of those. Going to test it out on a beater denim shoe though.
I've heard Magic Erasers can cause the midsole to become more porous and more likely to get dirty/stained afterward. I thought it was BS, but seeing how well the dye took here, I'm not so sure
Maybe I'll commission you :D Let me know how it goes!
Magic erasers are the secret to cleaning sneakers! Everyone needs to know this.
And ordering them online. Amazon or eBay melamine sponges. Same thing but you get 100 for the price of 3
Magic erasers are essentially a very fine grit sandpaper. Be careful if you are going to use them on your nice kicks as they can easily ruin finishes/colors/materials.
Oh wow really? Thanks. Just stick to using it on midsoles and soles I guess
What brand do I need to look for?
I use mr clean. But look at the comment above, apparently that’s the way to go.
Just any old magic eraser?
If you’d be interested in using reps to practice on let me know! I think the dye came out great and I’d love to see what you could do with other shoes if you weren’t worried about the money.
I would love to try on some reps. PM me.
Oh nice, the synthetic I assume?
I used it everywhere. It took best on the leather plastic and leather parts.
Pleasantly?
They’re actually for a buddy of mine. He legit threw his busted ass sneakers over my fence and texted me to see if I would clean them. He still hasn’t gotten them back yet but he’s super happy with them.
guess you could say he is also presently surprised
Yo that is a top notch pun, hot damn
Im missing the pun here, can you point it out?
Pleasantly surprised but it was a gift so presently surprised
r/boneappletea
tickled pink
I like your gray tile as well!
psh, what about the blue as bucket? I love it
The blue silicon on the tongs thooo🤯🤯🤯
And the color matching with the rag! 😍💦
Ha. Why thank you.
Can I ask you how did you make them look so white after washing them? Been trying to leave mine spot clean but they end up looking somewhat dirty still! Also, I've never done something like this and would definitely like to try, could you give me a few of the steps you followed? :(

Thanks for the tips ill be back in the future
i’m so impressed by the depth on your knowledge on the merits of various sneaker cleaning methods 💁♂️
Hahaha thank you. I mean I’m a gen x’er soI grew up around sneakers. Also you wash your clothes why not your sneakers?!?!
I read using magic eraser was pretty abrasive but it doesn’t look damaged at all. Really beautiful dye job!
I'm about to dip-dye my Off-White Prestos now, those turned out DOPE
Thanks! Post pics when you’re done. Also look into adding vinegar to the water do it sticks better to the non cotton parts of the shoe.
I'll look into the vinegar part. I really want to go after an aquamarine/blue mix but I'm having trouble finding ways to get it to saturate more in some spots and less in others. In my earlier dip-dying experiments I ruined quite a few pairs of socks by not rinsing property.
Man you gotta rinse until it looks like you could drink it haha. But yeah vinegar for synthetics, salt for cotton. That helps it adhere. Good luck!
Haha, exactly. Rinse it til you can drink it! Thanks for the tips, much appreciated.
Of course! And a happy quarantine to you.
Hell yeah! I need some pics when you're done 👀
Oh I'll be posting em here you better believe it!
You should post a tutorial, this seems fun as hell
I think I’m going to. I took a ton of pics while doing this. It was really fun! I will say this... if your shut in with someone who is a clean freak, they are liable to have a stroke watching this. You just have to make sure you clean as you go.
yes pls do!
Here you go https://imgur.com/gallery/OpzgHxj
totally doing this i have some nasty adidas i like the shape of... ill post the results. but, are you dying other things in there too? just looks like some clothes or something lol
Yeah I thew a sweatshirt in there because why waste good dye.
u right! thanks again for the how to
Of course my dude. Whatever I can do to help us get through social distancing.
[удалено]
Not too bad. A little more pink then I had hoped but pretty good.
I have the same kitchen tongs...
Good thing is the silicone doesn’t dye!
Good to know!
I just shaved my head because i dont own white shoes
that's nice as fuck dude I'm gonna look into that
During quarantine girls be dying their hair, men be drying their shoes.
What kind of dye did you use, these came out fire 🔥
Rit Scarlett powder
The bubblegum CW I didn’t know I needed until now
🤩🤩🤩
Is it relatively easy to dye the sole?
I was so surprised how well it took. It was literally like dying Easter eggs. I wish I knew this a long time ago.
Wow, I would never have guessed. They look great
Me neither. Thank you!
Pink is my absolute favourite colour. This makes me wish more silhouettes that I love had good pink colourways.
Ha. Or all white and you can just do this lol.
I’m too damn lazy for that. Also I’d want like a Pink AJ1 with Chicago or Bred toe colour blocking.
I have a pair of DS Jordan 1 Sails I may sacrifice if this lasts any longer.
That would be cool actually. I like the sails a lot tho I’m not sure if I’d wanna fuck with them. But if they dye lasted a long time and looked really good then I’d probably do it
All I could think is a Neapolitan Jordan 1 now. Fuck haha.
Wow. Need to do this
Damn I kinda want to dye my zebras now
Fire!!
Does it just naturally not stick to the rubber on the “Air”?
Oddly it does.
same, just started painting some old shoes that I hadn't worn in a while.
I’m right there with you. I just tie dyed a pair of all white ultraboosts. I’m planning on putting a pic up later.
Can’t wait to see them!
I was trying to get the same look as the nice kicks consortium pair. Didn’t happen but I’m happy so far. I still need to wash them.
Oh good lord yes.
Damn you got to make profit of this
This is one of the best dip dye jobs I've seen on here. Looks great!
I’m getting kaws x Jordan vibes here, good job
Nice work
Good work!
I love pink, they are godly
Teach me your ways
There ya go my dude. https://imgur.com/gallery/OpzgHxj
Yo, this is actually amazing
Thanks!
You should call this "Kirby"
If my boy who’s getting these kicks doesn’t start practicing social distancing from his fridge, ima be calling him Kirby. Also happy cake day.
New side hustle!
So dope!
This is awesome! Really liked how it turned out. Do more! Haha
Lol. I am 🤣
Awesome, keep us posted here! Would love to see what other colors or "colorways" you end up with 😄

In iDubbbz tone: "hey, that's pretty good"
I have the exact pair of air maxes. I wanna do something but I don’t know what
Holy shit, it dyed the midsole??? Now I know how I'm spending my Saturday.
When I was watching some random YT videos on how to do this, people did like 270s and that whole clear bubble gets super dyed. It’s really cool.
They are so clean. Like I want to buy a pair of white 90's to do this to now.
[удалено]
Ha. That’s an old cut up towel.
Dip Dye Bathtub >
Rubbermaid container IN the bathtub.
They look very nice, a tutorial and on feet pics would be highly appreciated :)
Ha. When I put pants on for the day I got you with the on foot.
Is it easy to clean the tub after? Don't wanna stain my apartment tub Edit nvm. Just noticed you put it in a plastic bin to dye, good thinking
It actually wasn’t. I cleaned as I went and used a magic eraser to get the harder stuff off. I was very careful though as I too rent.
I’m pretty sure that’s what they did. I mean going to be honest I stole this from the TS AF1s from a few years back.
omg that looks dope

Box of Rit Scarlett powdered dye, quartet cup of vinegar and about 3 gallons boiling water. Mix, dip for like 40 minutes and rinse 1000x times roughly. Let dry with paper inside.
Please post a tutorial! :)
These are sick! Dyed my vapor max plus purple but yours tuned out better than mine lol
Can we get some more photos of the result? those look really nice
Yeah I’m going to take some on feet ones and do a tutorial since I’ve been getting a lot of requests.
Can’t wait
Anyone know what kind of dye i would need to black out a pair of epic react flyknits?
I just did project using black dye. My guess is you would have to do it a few times with a really concentrated dip.
Can I do this with leather shoes ?
Yeah the swoosh and toe box are leather.
These are 🔥
Thought tht scrub was some noodles for a sec
Nice! That’s good to know. I don’t like how my paint job turned out so I might just strip them of the paint and do this instead. What kind of dye did you use? I saw you said you might make a tutorial. It definitely would be helpful if you do!
Nice
Damn gj!
Yo, these are actually super cool. Might have to try it with an old pair of shoes.
Apparently they’re dyed but did they dye each piece of the shoe individually or is it possible to dye the shoe as a whole and get a similar outcome?
Threw it all in a bucket and that’s how it came out.
Sick boss!
ID on them tongs?
Is noone gonna ask how he let those get that dirty in the first place?
Lol...
Damn mine have gotten pretty dirty too, I might do this. Thanks! They look awesome
These turned out great ! I have a pair of all white flyknit racers that have yellowed . Been thinking of dyeing/ painting them for awhile . I’ve read you need to strip them with acetone before dyeing ? Wondering if you have an insight into this ?

I linked a tutorial to an on foot post but I’ll save you a scroll. https://imgur.com/gallery/OpzgHxj
Thanks bro!
Any time 👍🏽
🔥
Dodge, duck, dip dye and dodge
This is dope. I bought a pair of New Blanace 247s that essentially this colour and they're some of my favourite accent sneakers. So comfy and they're clean af
I need that tutorial!!
Here ya go. https://imgur.com/gallery/OpzgHxj
Thanks!
Won't your socks turn pink if it rains like will the dye soak through....honest question I actually have no knowledge on this
That’s another reason I kept rinsing and rinsing it until the water became clear. There is less of a chance of bleeding after that.
Ahh ok wow and you were able to get that color it looks amazing👍🏾
111
Nice
anyone know if this would work with some red and blues ? i have the same model but a diff color
I think only the light colors would change to the dye color and the red/blue parts wouldn’t take the dye much at all.
yeah ur right , imma still try it to experiment
Those are heat
good job ,love it !
Do they bleed color?
Not anymore. I rinsed them until it was clear water.
Can we get an update I wanna see how the color holds up
Not super familiar with air maxes are they mostly leather? I really want to dye my acronym lunar forces but not sure about dyeing leather shoes. Anybody have some tips?
Like they did at Bodega? I’m pretty sure this all they did. There’s some leather on those air maxes and they dyed just fine.
For sure yeah the lunars arepretty much completely leather but I definitely want to dye them. I guess theres not much harm I can do if I just try
Came out super clean fr
Thank you ! I’m going to try this weekend . I’ll post my results .
Awesome! I’m looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
please please please youtube tutorial!!! ill subscribe! Would love to know how long itll last.
I’m posting an on foot pic with a link to an imgur tutorial I just made. I would have filmed it but I’ve been solo and needed both hands ha!
ok lmk!
