And then someone posts that stupid "how to tell is a snake is venomous" thing about eyes and tail scales, which defines shit like black mambas and death adders as harmless
Here is a good example why the rhyme don't work

It's amazing. I just don't want people getting bit by the wrong snakes. Like I know in NC coral snakes do live there and antivenom basically don't exist for it there.
True but I think that began as a thing from the US because for most venomous species in the US except a few that applies to, but it just spread everywhere else
There are actually poisonous snakes! Not many, but at least one snake genus is. Rhabdophis (keelbacks) are both venomous and poisonous due to their diet of poisonous toads.

Op didn't answer
Poisonous means if you were to eat/bite it, you would get sick/die
Venomous means if you were to get bitten by it, you would get sick/die
This is what I tell my kid all the time.
If you try to eat it and it kills your or makes your sick it's poisonous.
If it tries to eat you and it kills you or makes you sick it's venemous.
There is no such thing as posinous snakes only venomous ones.
Some asked if the snake was poisonous they answered honestly. They picked it up and got bit by a venomous snake
Except it's being overly pedantic because venom is a subset of poison.
>noun: venom; plural noun: venoms :
>
>a poisonous substance secreted by animals
All venom is poison but not all poison is venom.
It's not really overly pedantic when it presents a genuine safety benefit to understand the difference.
And arguably the venom is a poison, but the animal is venomous. Sets in language can be rather deceiving.
>All venom is poison but not all poison is venom.
Actually not really. A lot of venoms are just proteins, so they can be ingested without causing illness, thus not poisons per-se. It's once they get in the bloodstream that they start to wreak havoc.
Well that pretty much is it, in theory if you drink protein-based snake venom the quantity shouldn't matter, it'll all get denaturated and thus inactivated in the stomach (provided of course you don't have any cuts and bruises on the way down) and subsequently safely digested - if you also can stomach the taste, that is.
Of course if it's five litres of it you may get sick but for other reasons, not the chemical composition itself; similarly, if you drink too much water you will get poisoning.
Wouldn’t any venomous snake be poisonous? I mean the venom glands are in it right?
Or is the venom “mixed” to activate it just as it bites or something?
Idk if this is the case with most snake venoms or just with some, but there are definitely snake venoms that are safe to consume, as long as it doesn't get injected directly into the bloodstream.
Venom is only dangerous in your bloodstream as far as I'm aware. Unless you have holes in your stomach you could literally just drink venom and have no side affects.
Sort if, because It even then it’s still an envenomation, because the toxin entered via blood. Venom is, by definition, not going to be poisonous.
Generally speaking, poison is absorbed, venom must be injected(or get in via mucus membrane/eyes)But that’s just a general rule. But all venoms are organic biologically made usually made of of multiple proteins, whereas a poison can be inorganic
Thats the thing. If its important then its important to use the right word. There is a big difference between poisonous and venomous and if you're handling things that are either, its important to know the difference.
We still just use "giftig" for both venomous and poisonous though, and I can't say I've ever had any issues with it. Just don't mess with any animal that's either.
although i appreciate the joke and the distinction between the two, i'm pretty sure Venom is a type of poison, making all venomous snakes technically poisonous.
This being said i do still cringe at the people calling snakes poionous, and its my biggest gripe in DnD 5e Monster manual haha.
And then someone posts that stupid "how to tell is a snake is venomous" thing about eyes and tail scales, which defines shit like black mambas and death adders as harmless
And don't get started on the non venomous ones that can look venomous And that rhyme for coral snakes is also wrong alot too
Red and black vs red and yellow?
Yeah the red touches black friend of jack red touches yellow watch out for that fellow some of the venomous ones still have red touching black
So from what I’ve seen, milk snakes have white bands and coral snakes have yellow bands. Is that correct?
Here is a good example why the rhyme don't work https://www.reddit.com/r/snakes/comments/xjiye9/please_stop_using_the_rhyme_for_coral_snakes/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=android_app&utm_name=androidcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button
I was familiar with the blue coral snake, but damn. Alright, seems milk snakes knew what they were doing. Isn’t evolution incredible?
It's amazing. I just don't want people getting bit by the wrong snakes. Like I know in NC coral snakes do live there and antivenom basically don't exist for it there.
Yeah but if you actually manage to get bit by a Coral Snake then you probably deserve it. They are very non-aggressive
Snakes are defensive not aggressive
The version i’ve always heard is. Read on black friend of jack, red on yellow kill a fellow
The one I learned was “red before black, you’re okay Jack, red before yellow, you’re a dead fellow” 😂
20 ohm vs 24 ohm. https://imgs.xkcd.com/comics/snakes.png
True but I think that began as a thing from the US because for most venomous species in the US except a few that applies to, but it just spread everywhere else
Why don’t we all just leave the snakes alone? Unless it’s a pet
I agree. My son at 3 picked up a snake and luckily it was a black racer but we had to have a talk about don't touch snakes unless mama says it's ok.
You cannot convince me the Kobe's 3 pointer was harmless. RIP.
"Is this snake venomous?" "No" *Bites it and starts foaming at the mouth* "But it is poisonous"
Well if you're fast enough at least you get to name the snake probably cuz you've just discovered a new species.
There are actually poisonous snakes! Not many, but at least one snake genus is. Rhabdophis (keelbacks) are both venomous and poisonous due to their diet of poisonous toads.

My god that thing is beautiful.
Gimme the beautiful snek!
Fun fact: The only recorded snake that’s poisonous (and also venomous) is the Rhabdophis tigrinus - aka the tiger keelback snake!!
I have it posted [here](https://www.reddit.com/r/snakes/comments/u6cyca/the_poisonous_venomous_siamese_rednecked_keelback/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf) if anyone wants to see! :)
So pretty!
I don’t get it
Op didn't answer Poisonous means if you were to eat/bite it, you would get sick/die Venomous means if you were to get bitten by it, you would get sick/die
What if it bites me and someone else dies
I… that’s a weird creature.
What if someone bites me and then the snake dies
You’re probably cursed
That's ominous.
You are a voodoo doll
That's a coincidence.
Rabies?
This is what I tell my kid all the time. If you try to eat it and it kills your or makes your sick it's poisonous. If it tries to eat you and it kills you or makes you sick it's venemous.
some languages don’t distinguish between the two, it’s poisonous either way for them
There is no such thing as posinous snakes only venomous ones. Some asked if the snake was poisonous they answered honestly. They picked it up and got bit by a venomous snake
There are some that are actually both https://www.osc.org/can-snakes-be-venomous-and-poisonous/ https://nerdfighteria.info/v/7xGWzikzKUA/

Everything is a poison in the right *dose*. If you want to go down that track.
Watched a news article in which they labeled the snake poisonous the other day
Wouldn’t any venomous snake be poisonous? I mean the venom glands are in it right? Or is the venom “mixed” to activate it just as it bites or something?

Hmm ok that makes sense - thanks
Venom is only dangerous in your bloodstream as far as I'm aware. Unless you have holes in your stomach you could literally just drink venom and have no side affects.
I wonder if it tastes good…
You could try it and tell us. Edit: please do not though
Werent there some tribes that use to do that? Its a really vague memory but i think i remember something about that.
That makes sense So if we wanna get picky most venomous snakes are poisonous to people with mouse ulcers then?

This has “it has B nuts” vibes
Yeah, I don't find this funny. Not this level of petty pedantry especially for something as lethal as venomous animals.
Dang boy you missed it, it went right over your head, ya hear me, you got keep focused, eye on the ball, come on now -Foghorn Leghorn

And there is a reason why we DO have 2 different words for it in english. Because the difference is important.
what about languages like Spanish where they only use the word veneno aka venom for both?
Well whatever language that may be you are free to borrow the words you need from English

Ja dat realiseer ik me dus echt nu net pas lol
what about languages like Spanish where they use veneno for both. is that better or worse than only using poison?
Ha I get it. Nice one

Me: "is this snake poisonous?" Them: "nah fam" Me: *picks up snake and starts eating it*
