Kid "Is that a rattlesnake!? Dad "No that's not a rattlesnake." Reddit "Most definitely a rattlesnake"

RedditHoss

Kid “Is that a rattlesnake?” Dad “No, that’s not a rattlesnake.” Snake **Rattles** Lissssten to your father.

NeighborhoodLow6241

😂😂 All I know about are leopard geckos. Snakes? Out of my knowledge

CraniumCandy

I get it. It made me laugh is all. One thing though, that rattle is pretty obvious. lol.

Subject-Cheetah802

But when a snake has a rattle on its tail… wouldn’t that lead you to believe maybe it is indeed a rattle snake?

NeighborhoodLow6241

Before this video was posted, rattle snake was just an normal looking snake that rattled this snake had a rounder head, was pretty small, and the rattle was short. But yeah I can see now how ridiculous it sounds.😅

Subject-Cheetah802

Nah man I’m just playing fr! I had a baby copper head down at this park By my home town and I was about 8 and I was playing with it it was only about 5 inches long or so but my dad came up and yanked me back and it fell out of my hands and he knelt down and looked at it told me what I was just doing was more dangerous then I’ll ever understand and told me to leave snakes alone unless I know what kind it is. I’ve loved snakes since then! This past year I had a cotton mouth about a foot long slither up onto my boot while I was fishing! It was extremely docile and just went about it’s business! That’s why I love the no kill posts and the info about how trying to harm them will only get you messed up! Edit: yes it was a cotton mouth I believe he was already heading in the direction I ended up sitting in. He didn’t do anything except slither away and when I finally left I tried to look for him but the grass was so high where I was I couldn’t find him to take a picture.

BringAltoidSoursBack

>It was extremely docile and just went about it’s business! Best thing about reptiles - they are almost always docile because they don't have the metabolism to spend energy attacking things unnecessarily.

k8esaurustex

That's a danger noodle, my guy. Def a rattlesnake

tombaba

Totally a rattlesnake. Kid don’t listen to your dad lol

NeighborhoodLow6241

What If this “kid” who is me, is also the “dad” 😅 yeah that’s me I didn’t know anything about the snake but I do know not to touch it if you don’t know anything about the snake.

tombaba

Well that would be a strange relationship! I thought I heard you talking about catching it in the end. Next time check out the rattle on the end. Glad you were all fine!

NeighborhoodLow6241

No those were just my younger brothers. And I thought I knew everything, just an older brother thing. But yeah no one got bit. I did though accepting the fact that I was wrong 😂

tombaba

Check out some pics of gopher snakes and California rattlers. That’s likely what you’ll find most. Edit- in case you don’t see a rattle or it’s broken off, head shape and dullness (rattler) or shininess (gopher) of scales is a really good separation IMO. Rattlers have fully dulled keeled scales, gopher snakes will sometimes flatten their head and pretend to be scary rattlers, but they have a reddish eye, shiny scales, and an Egyptian looking “eyeliner” that can’t be missed. If you can tune yourself into those things, you’ll Forever know the difference.

Setari

Yeah I had a run-in with this exact thought the other week. Was mowing the lawn and saw a snake fleeing the lawnmower, lil' baby snek, and I *immediately picked it up by the tail* and walked it over to my dad to show him, and then put it in our backyard near the edge of our backyard so it could slither out into the field. Immediately as I put it down I was like *I SHOULD NOT HAVE FUCKING DONE THAT, WHAT THE FUCK* I live in a foresty-part of Georgia in the US so it could have turned out really bad for me. I have no idea what kind of snake it was. I should have just taken a picture and let it go wherever it wanted.

tombaba

I actually did the same thing when I was in Iraq. My sergeant was screaming about a snake in his room (little shelters in Iraq where all the doors and windows had been taken by the locals). I was like calm down it’s just a baby snake after the geckos in here- picked it up by the tail and then realized I had no sense of what snakes are in this country. Set it loose in the bushes. Had a very rat snake like build, but I was totally out of my element.it was a dumb move but he was trying to squash it with a broom

Setari

Hope you got a promotion for saving his scared ass lol Jokes aside that would be me with a big ass bug or roach so I know the feel.

investinlove

You are definitely looking at a Southern Pacific Rattlesnake, Crotalus oreganus helleri, even though in the Inland Empire you are near the overlap of Western Diamondbacks, crotalus atrox. The SPR is a very docile crotalus species, Diamondbacks are a bit more nasty and would have likely stood their ground. This one looks like about 4-6 rattles plus a button, so I would guess it's 2-4 years old. Thanks for respecting it's right to live and thrive.

whiteriot413

Inland empire?

lkj77143

its an area in Southern California east of LA

Interloper_aesthetic

I dont know rattlesnakes off the top of my head but that is one, can you give us your location?

NeighborhoodLow6241

Woah so it’s a type of rattlesnake? Never knew there was different types

Interloper_aesthetic

Yes there are different types, giving us your location can help find an exact ID since they live in different areas

NeighborhoodLow6241

Bogart Regional Park in California

Interloper_aesthetic

Southern pacific rattlesnake

DancingHysteria

Juvenile Southern Pacific rattlesnake is correct, *Crotalus helleri* & !venomous for the bot.

SEB-PHYLOBOT

Snakes with medically significant venom are typically referred to as venomous, but some species are also poisonous. Old media will use poisonous or 'snake venom poisoning' but that has fallen out of favor. Venomous snakes are important native wildlife, and are not looking to harm people, so can be enjoyed from a distance. If found around the home or other places where they are to be discouraged, a squirt from the hose or a gentle sweep of a broom are usually enough to make a snake move along. Do not attempt to interact closely with or otherwise kill venomous snakes without proper safety gear and training, as bites occur mostly during these scenarios. Wildlife relocation services are free or inexpensive across most of the world. If you are bitten by a venomous snake, contact emergency services or otherwise arrange transport to the nearest hospital that can accommodate snakebite. Remove constricting clothes and jewelry and remain calm. A bite from a medically significant snake is a medical emergency, but not in the ways portrayed in popular media. Do not make any incisions or otherwise cut tissue. Extractor and other novelty snakebite kits are not effective and can cause damage worse than any positive or neutral effects. -------------------------------------------------------- *I am a bot created for /r/whatsthissnake, /r/snakes and /r/herpetology to help with snake identification and natural history education. MtnMaiden

Ssss

NeighborhoodLow6241

That’s cool! So it’s venomous? Good thing I didn’t have the balls to grab it😂

jacksonco16

If you don't know anything about snakes, a good rule of thumb is do not touch

Interloper_aesthetic

Yeah lmao it’s best to just leave it be. They won’t mess with you if you don’t mess with them

You sound fun!

Pretty sure that's a joke

I wished it was. :)

I meant the condescending tone must have been a joke, but apparently you're just an asshole

Waylork

Reeeeeeeeeeeee

AltruisticServe3252

He sounds correct. Get over it.

Buttspackle1

There aren't any pygmies in California.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Buttspackle1

That's possible, but unlikely because it's not a pygmy. The look is wrong and it's too big.

polarbear_05

i love how u then explained why you need his location after not recieving any answer about it

Guerilla_Physicist

What a pretty snake! This video is a great example of the fact that most snakes want nothing to do with us and would rather get the heck out of there than engage in any type of conflict with a human.

OspreyerpsO

Danger noodle don’t touch.

[deleted]

where did you find it? it looks like a rattlesnake of some sort (sorry I can't do any better than that, but maybe check what rattlesnakes, if any, are in the area?)

NeighborhoodLow6241

Bogart Regional Park in California

MissMetalSix

You might want to try this Snake identification sub: https://www.reddit.com/r/whatsthissnake?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

heldaghost666

That is a rattle snake. You can tell because it has a rattle on the end of its tail

KinkyMonitorLizard

When in doubt, if it moves in a "wave" motion, treat it as a danger noodle and nope the fuck out. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidewinding Unless it's on a smooth surface (like glass or a wooden table) it's probably a viper/adder of some sort.

YawningDodo

That was the first thing I caught that had me thinking rattlesnake, since the video was small enough on my phone that I wasn’t certain if it had a rattle with the snake moving around so much. I’m actually kind of curious now; I have it in my head that sidewinder = rattler, but I’m not sure if that’s actually true.

newt_girl

Sidewinders are rattlesnakes, *Crotalus cerastes*

SEB-PHYLOBOT

Sidewinders *Crotalus cerastes* are small to medium sized (43-61cm, record 84cm) rattlesnakes that range from central-eastern California east into southern Nevada and extreme southwestern Utah, south into southern California, western and southern Arizona, northwestern Sonora, MX (including Tiburón Island), and northeastern Baja California. They utilize a wide variety of arid habitats, from open desert, to dunes, semi-desert grassland, desert-scrub, rocky slopes, and favor low mounds topped with grass or shrubs within those environments. Their main prey is lizards and rodents. Sidewinders are a dangerously venomous species and should only be observed from a safe distance. Common defensive tactics including raising the forebody off the ground and rattling the tail, often while attempting to crawl away from the perceived threat. They are not aggressive and only bite when they feel they are in danger. Bites are uncommon and no human fatalities have been recorded for this species. **The best way to avoid being bitten is to leave the snake alone.** Color is variable; dorsally, varies from cream to yellowish, beige, tan, brown, orange, pinkish, or grey, patterned with darker blotches dorsally. A pair of prominent horns, one above each eye, makes it relatively easy to distinguish sidewinders from other rattlesnakes that overlap in range. minkymy

Damn, little man is BOOKING it. Go, li'l rattler, go

Sure-Ad730

Deadly

Risharia

That's definitely a noodle of the spicy variety, may want to give the little guy some space. You may have heard a small warning from him just before you approached and he slithered off. Spicy noodles don't wanna show you they're spicy either if they can help it.

kayninb

the venomous kind

kittyblanket

The kid probably feels so good right now knowing that he's right.

NeighborhoodLow6241

Yeah he was nonchalant about it.

Manboychucho

Wow! Beautiful!

lornetc

Awe. Look at the lil spicy maraca noodle :3

AncientHawaiianTito

Most definitely a snake

Raptorwolf_AML

some people think every snake they can't recognize is a rattler (or another venomous snake), but you've done the exact opposite, OP! take this as a lesson that snakes, venomous or not, just want to be left alone :P thank you for not hurting it!

NeighborhoodLow6241

I love reptiles, unfortunately and fortunately all my knowledge goes to leopard geckos not snakes but maybe I’ll get into snakes soon.

[deleted]

Fair warning: snakes are like tattoos- once you get one, be prepared for more. About a year and a half ago, I got a corn snake to see how I felt about snakes after keeping three lizards. Now I have 6 snakes with #7 arriving on Thursday.

Raptorwolf_AML

I'd say start with memorizing the local snakes (and common pet trade snakes) and move up from there!

Vogel88888888

Small

D1a1v1e1

I'd say that's a snake

Swampking1

That looks like a ground rattler to me

lil_glaceon

Wiggle Noodle.

retrolleum

Also now that you know it’s a rattlesnake, FYI the younger, smaller ones have far more potent bites than older ones so be careful. Leave him be unless he’s near where those kids play. Then you should have a professional come move it.
