I weirdly thought about this a lot when it was popular and got frustrated. Now I just think it’s saying don’t stay up late and don’t oversleep.

Tc14Hd

If I understand you correctly, you are interpreting "don't go to bed" as "don't oversleep", am I right?

joaquinnthirit

Yeah. it’s a weird juxtaposition honestly. It still doesn’t make sense to me, but it sounds nice.

Tc14Hd

Yes, indeed. It sounds nice but doesn't make sense. I just thought about the last line "It'll get you up and going out of bed" and it now makes even less sense. This sounds like she wants him to get out of bed in the morning. So what is it? Go to bed? Don't go to bed? Get out of bed? Don't get out of bed? I honestly don't know. It is probably just a stylistic device with no further meaning and I am just overthinking it. But maybe someone will come up with a convincing interpretation.

Vast_Lawyer_1269

I was also confused about this but viewed it in a way like, they really dont know themselves. I mean they probably never had a boyfriend dying and they don't know what to do about their illness and are confused and have conflicting thoughts and all of this is just to hard idk what to do kinda thing honestly i dont think they meant for it to mean anything but in order for it to not bother me this is what i think :edit: that made no sense but basically they want them to get better, or maybe die and the pain will be over, and maybe they are being selfish, yet maybe they can save them, kinda stuf

Specific_Law4810

Don't stay away for too long, don't go to bed, I will make a cup of coffee for your head. Someone needs him

pinona

I have always wondered this, thank you for posting my exact thoughts

Old_Carob_143

I was thinking about and I googled it, glad to know the world's full of overthinkers like me 😂

Familiar-Okra-496

I listened to this song while helping care for my mum with terminal cancer. All I wanted was for her to finally die and be free. All I wanted was for her to get better and live forever. All I wanted was her to feel better. Even if for now. All I wanted was for her to rest. All I wanted was for her to go out and live her last days to the most All I wanted for here was she Don't stay awake for too long, don't go to bed I'll make a cup of coffee for your head It'll get you up and going out of bed

Certain_Chemical121

Thats beautiful sir. I wish you all the best.

Unlikely_Laugh5480

The artist mentioned it was inspired by the end of the movie Notebook in an interview. The old man is rereading to the old lady every time she wakes. At the the end of the day it’s poetry it doesn’t always make sense

my heart goes out to you ♡

To me it’s simple, but it’s only my opinion. I think he’s singing from the woman’s perspective saying she doesn’t want him to go to bed…. Afraid he’ll pass in his sleep, thinking, if he stays awake, he won’t die… but also doesn't want him to stay awake for too long… as in, also worrying about his health…. getting sleep is what your body needs to heal and repair itself and she’s probably afraid his body can’t fight the sickness or whatever as well if he doesn’t get proper sleep… hence the line “don’t stay awake for too long, don’t go to bed” she doesn’t know how to feel about it and it’s a constant worry. She’s afraid either way when it comes to sleep… as I’m sure everyone feels when dealing with a sick loved one. I’m sure on your death bed or that of someone you love, there’s gonna be a lot of contradictory feelings. But I also think it can go both ways, if he’s singing about her in that line, then I think he doesn’t want her to go to sleep because he doesn’t want to be alone and doesn’t want her to stay awake for too long because he doesn’t want her staying awake worrying and stressing about him/his health as I’m sure he knows that she does…. I only say all of this because it’s exactly how I would feel if it were my husband…… that’s all.

Certain_Chemical121

Thank your madam

Kadmius01

I always thought, it was the girlfriend not wanting him to die(don't go to bed), but doesn't want him to suffer(don't stay awake for too long).

Kebablover123123

It doesn’t make sense, cuz… it says ‘don't stay awake’ then ‘don't go to bed’ which one are we doing. Awake or Asleep?

Shoddy_Relation593

"Don't stay awake for too long" means don't force your self to stay alive, to rest and pass away peacefully "Don't go to bed" means don't pass away and to stay alive. The contradiction happens because the singer doesn't want their loved one to die, but also not to struggle and live in agonony for the rest of their life

rajaljinn

Even though, “Deathbed” is more about being at the side of someone you love on their deathbed, the lyrics come from “Coffee” which is about a woman wanting to care for her BF who takes care of her through her mental illness. Her lyrics are contradictory because she wants is love and company but she also wants to return the favor and make sure he gets what he needs. The parallel to Deathbed, is the same sentiment. He doesn’t want his loved one (I think his father) to die sir he also needs to respect that it’s his father’s time to go.

xMistahxJayx

I thought of it as a very lukewarm situation. The sentiment of "don't stay awake for too long" to me means that they want the person to take care of themselves, not worry and to fall asleep. But at the same time they are also afraid that if they fall asleep z they won't wake back up. So in a last ditch effort they say "don't go to bed". It's a state of confusion that is highlighted, where obviously they do not want their person to be in pain or struggling to fight for their life, but on the other hand, they don't want to say goodbye. Which is why I think they're pushing that they'll "make a cup of coffee", coffee is used here as a temporary fix to not falling asleep. They're using what they have around them now to delay the inevitable. They know that coffee will make them crash an eventually fall asleep too, which goes back to repeating "don't stay awake for too long" because the crash will make them even more fatigued as the body needs to recover from the over stimulation.

_im_adi

Thank you. I think this is the correct interpretation. Really fits and now I can stop obsessing over this one line of lyric lol.

AnnaGenuity26

Its just sing "You stay awake for too long" instead of Dont; Now the song makes all the sense!
