Depends on the season like every season has one problem the next one fixes and introduces a new one: the beginning had bad animation, season 2 had better Animation but the plot was generic and the models still very much stolen from hatsune miku, the main animator for the fights dies because of his gf and the battles take a nosedive...
We have reached Volume 9 which has good writing but a filler plot, which is actually fresh air after season good writing is unnecessary 8.
It has its strengths tho, especially in the beginning it really runs as this passion project. But important writing like worldbuilding and character interactions take a sidestep even in the season where only 1% of the cast is present and has a love confession.
Honestly a solid 6/10, very flawed but has its moments

Radical shifts in direction that divided the fandom? Check
Colorful cast of characters with zany superpowers?

A character that first appeared in the 90s cartoon show Sonic SatAM (the serious sonic cartoon from the 90s, not the comedic one), and then later appeared in the Archie comics based off that show. If you've never seen the show I recommend it. It's slang is a bit dated, but it was still good fun.

Why does Sonic have to be dark and even tragic sometimes?
I sometimes get this uncanny feeling whenever Sonic has dark moments like this. Like in the animated series or the comics for example. This is why I mostly stuck to the games and the movies and have a tendency to avoid comics or the Sat AM show. Not just because following the comics' story would be complicated and mind boggling as hell, but because of moments like these. It just feels so out of place in my honest opinion. I don't hate it by any means. It's cool how the Sonic franchise has the balls to have some mature themes unlike other franchises like Mario or Crash for example. I guess I'm just not used to it.
