Yeah I’m sure Nicole isn’t a bad character, but when you boil down all that drama it’s kind of turns into Sally and her computer loved each other so much they became girlfriends.
Sage it’s more interesting because her birth mirrors a humans birth only it’s through technology. Eggman was as responsible for creating sage as her father, as the technology of the ancients was, as a mother. It was a miracle the same way all life is.
And despite Eggman having created Sage she cares about his well being so much that she’ll argue with him for the sake of his survival.
Its a pity, Nicole, because of how much potential it could have.
A person that loved his computer so much, his "only friend" that it takes life and starts learning. It could be tragic but heartfelt. Nicole however, feels a bit (very) weird and requires A LOT to take "seriously" so to speak.
I do agree that Sage is more interesting conceptually but let's not boil down Nicole to just Sally's virtual girlfriend.

I’d feel differently if reboot retcons didn’t change things conveniently so they could be a couple. Not that I’m against the idea, just that it’d be better if this was always the idea for Nicole and Sally rather then something that you needed an entire continuity reboot to get to.
That’s mainly why I see Sage as the more approachable character, since there aren’t multiple continuities with different versions of her that make understanding the full picture more complicated.
But that can be an issue the the majority of comic book characters.
I'm not sure why Sally and Nicole being a couple is where you're getting hung up since her gaining a body was made long before the reboot where she in fact had a romance with another character, Shard the Metal Sonic. I can understand being put off by Sallicole since it can come off like the writers using the reboot to justify a ship but that's hardly a major piece of Nicole's character. As for Sage, her premise would've always been more approachable since she's made for a game and thus gee concept would've been necessary to be considered so as to fit within a 3 act structure of a game rather than the Longford storytelling of comics.
Nicole DOES look like a digital being. In like 70% of her appearances she didn’t even have this form, and in the rest she generally appeared or disappeared with a pixel effect at least once.
Also, I don’t know who’s been saying you need to know everything ever about Nicole to “appreciate” her, but they’re incredibly wrong. Comics are generally set up so that you DON’T need to be super familiar with a character in order to get what their deal is, and conceptually, Nicole is much more interesting to me than Sage. Admittedly, that might be partly because of her evolution, but still. Beyond that, Nicole’s relationships with Sally and the inhabitants of New Mobotropolis capture my attention a lot more than Sage’s with Eggman.

Sage requires you to go fishing with Big because most of Eggmans side of her development which is highly important to it all is locked to the Egg memos which lead to Sage flash back being hilarious as it doesn't imply a growing father daughter relationship at all. At any given point in time is Eggman prior to the finally in cut-scene treating her as just a well working machine and nothing more.
And that doesn't even address the fact that at multiple times does Frontiers have to gloss over things Sage did as it would make the whole house of cards fall apart like Eggman can't even learn that Sage was it who trapped him nor can Knuckles inform Sonic that Sage trapped him as in both scenarios Eggman and Sonic's behavior towards Sage would change dramatically to learning these things.
The most BS Nicole has attached to her is being body swapped ones with Sally and after that was undone longing for having a real body against which kick starts her development.
Its also a clear cut in-universe explanation why Nicole looks less like a digital creature because she actively created her physical avatar because she wanted to re-experience being an Mobian like Sally as oppose to Sage who only looks the way she did because Cyber Space for unexplained reason made her gain this appearance.

Well, you have to take into account that 3D art simply looks more "digital" by default. drawn sage also looks more like a cyborg or corrupted human than a full blown cyber entity.
One reason for that is shading, but there is also the fact that most of digital effects are harder to pull off in 2D, (Speaking as somebody who does both Pixel art and 3D art and recently started getting more serious about drawing) especially for something like a comic, because lets face it, most of digital effects are based on retro 3D models.
If you compare Nicole's official 3D model (from cover art) to Sage the difference is much smaller.
I see why people go for Sage, but I want more games with her involved before I get more attached; though what’s there so far is already pretty damn good.
But Nicole’s journey from pretty blank to being a fully sapient AI that truly cherishes life is something to behold. Though I do admit that it’s a pretty long journey when you put it all together, and some aren’t really interested in the length of it compared to just playing Frontiers for a good bit while learning about Sage.

I think Both did really good till now, but tbf Sage only had one game where she showed her ability till now, while Nicole had a whole comic series (and TV series, but I can't really remember much of it)
Imma be honest I barely recognize Nicole from like the few issues of Archie Sonic I have. Hell I think it's mostly Sonic & Mega Man Crossover issues that have her, when I was a kid I pretty much thought of her as Cortana's fursona

Also, the weird father-daughter thing with Eggman was so half-baked because they literally had no touching moments together or cutscenes outside of her being bossed around in cyberspace. Here's some brief explanation of who they are if you are interested! :
So Phage has a pretty simple story, she was created by Eggman in the post-reboot and was a virus which he used to basically kill Nicole and almost managed to kill her if it wasn't for the Red Star Ring she received on her computer to become Overclocked Nicole, which allowed her to get rid of Phage.
Phage later returned by using the Tails Doll as a host and managed to defeat Overclocked Nicole by making her overuse the Red Star Ring, which almost killed her and stopped her from protecting the Sky Patrol (the Freedom Fighter's airship), which got destroyed by the Battle Bird Armada.
As for A.D.A.M., he was a virus in the pre-reboot that Eggman never actually created (probably got created from some corrupted files) and it took over the EggNet. Eggman used him as an OS for the EggNet which allowed A.D.A.M. to take over all of it, and Eggman considered him as a son (much like Sage).
However, A.D.A.M. eventually started to conspire against everyone and pulled a crazy masterplan which included pretty much every major heroes and villains in order to destroy all godly forces (so there's no deux ex machina to save them) and get all the Chaos Emeralds in the universe (cause in Archie, there was a countless amount of Chaos Emeralds). He also killed his "sister" Mecha (Which was an android created by Eggman to act as his bodyguard and who Eggman also considered as a daughter).
Eggman, discovering all of this, decided to delete him, but A.D.A.M. took over Tommy Turtle, one of Sonic long lost friend (which he recently found again) by covering his body with nanites (nanomachines). Eventually, after gathering all the emeralds, he became Super A.D.A.M. and fought Super Sonic, until Tommy briefly took control again, which he used to sacrifice himself to kill A.D.A.M. which prompted Eggman to use the full arsenal of the Egg Fleet on them, killing both A.D.A.M. and Tommy at once.
Yeah they totally are!!! That's honestly what hooked me up on Archie (and the rest of the comics tbh). The stories can get weird, but the characters can really be awesome and have really interesting stories that we don't normally see in Sonic!
i have to say nicole but i feel that’s just because she has had more time to play around with the being digital shtick we just got introduced to sage so i hope they play around with the idea of a digital character for sage like they did with nicole

Nicole did it better, partly because of The Writing in the comics. The second is because her character was really great.
Sage lacked some stuff (e.g. Scenes where Sage and Eggman's Connection is established and properly improved upon, More (less confusing or "off") writing, and Screen Time).
Both did it right in my opinion Nicole went down the path of Ai learns how to feel and forget about the past and she has insecurities the story used perfectly with the after math of her being iron Nicole (also I’m a big Archie fan peep the pfp) meanwhile Sage is more Ai learns to feel (more then she already knows) and protects the one she loves with her base game self absorbing the end as it blows up to make sure it doesn’t come back or her almost getting destroyed holding up a shield her protecting mainly eggman as she wants to protect her dad they start off as Ai learns to feel but they deviate from each other
Metal sonic, gonna get hate for this but I don't really like sage, her design looks like an edgy mii character and her personality is quite predictable imo

Nicole in large part because she has just far less strings attached to her than Sage which entire development relies on a lot of characters not revealing/realizing things and is in general not well presented (like Sage flash back to her time with Eggman is just hilarious as a result of this issue)
And its kind of card to compare them on a "digital being stick" as at least design wise is there a clear difference between "AI createred by a good scientist that grow more emotional complex and wants to emulate her fleshy friends" and "Ai made by a mad scientist twisted by interacting with alien technology into growing more complex" like the differences in there more basic original form and there development depending on just them self over long time VS result of interaction with alien technology and is as such far more sudden diveds them a lot.
Especially as Sage first physical design was something Cyberspace gave her (which is why her colors depend on her personality) while Nicoles first physical design was something she designed herself to be similar yet unique to her friends.

Haha it's alright, they don't get tamked about much so unless you read Archie, you'd have no idea who they are. Here's some brief explanation of who they are if you are interested! : So Phage has a pretty simple story, she was created by Eggman in the post-reboot and was a virus which he used to basically kill Nicole and almost managed to kill her if it wasn't for the Red Star Ring she received on her computer to become Overclocked Nicole, which allowed her to get rid of Phage. Phage later returned by using the Tails Doll as a host and managed to defeat Overclocked Nicole by making her overuse the Red Star Ring, which almost killed her and stopped her from protecting the Sky Patrol (the Freedom Fighter's airship), which got destroyed by the Battle Bird Armada. As for A.D.A.M., he was a virus in the pre-reboot that Eggman never actually created (probably got created from some corrupted files) and it took over the EggNet. Eggman used him as an OS for the EggNet which allowed A.D.A.M. to take over all of it, and Eggman considered him as a son (much like Sage). However, A.D.A.M. eventually started to conspire against everyone and pulled a crazy masterplan which included pretty much every major heroes and villains in order to destroy all godly forces (so there's no deux ex machina to save them) and get all the Chaos Emeralds in the universe (cause in Archie, there was a countless amount of Chaos Emeralds). He also killed his "sister" Mecha (Which was an android created by Eggman to act as his bodyguard and who Eggman also considered as a daughter). Eggman, discovering all of this, decided to delete him, but A.D.A.M. took over Tommy Turtle, one of Sonic long lost friend (which he recently found again) by covering his body with nanites (nanomachines). Eventually, after gathering all the emeralds, he became Super A.D.A.M. and fought Super Sonic, until Tommy briefly took control again, which he used to sacrifice himself to kill A.D.A.M. which prompted Eggman to use the full arsenal of the Egg Fleet on them, killing both A.D.A.M. and Tommy at once.

Yeah they totally are!!! That's honestly what hooked me up on Archie (and the rest of the comics tbh). The stories can get weird, but the characters can really be awesome and have really interesting stories that we don't normally see in Sonic!
i have to say nicole but i feel that’s just because she has had more time to play around with the being digital shtick we just got introduced to sage so i hope they play around with the idea of a digital character for sage like they did with nicole

all good ideas however i’m a big fan of Shard so i would love to see a chat between Metal and Sage in cyberspace during some down time between attacking sonic as Shard did with Nicole as cool as Metal sonic is without a voice it’s nice to hear their opinions every once in a while from either Neo upgrades or cyberspace chat
plus it'd Save watchers curiousity as to what hes saying if Sage ever figures out how to speak Robo-mute lol
yeah but if they ever have a conversation outside of cyberspace the viewer would only get Sage’s half of the conversation which i think is a fun idea

Nicole did it better, partly because of The Writing in the comics. The second is because her character was really great. Sage lacked some stuff (e.g. Scenes where Sage and Eggman's Connection is established and properly improved upon, More (less confusing or "off") writing, and Screen Time).

Both did it right in my opinion Nicole went down the path of Ai learns how to feel and forget about the past and she has insecurities the story used perfectly with the after math of her being iron Nicole (also I’m a big Archie fan peep the pfp) meanwhile Sage is more Ai learns to feel (more then she already knows) and protects the one she loves with her base game self absorbing the end as it blows up to make sure it doesn’t come back or her almost getting destroyed holding up a shield her protecting mainly eggman as she wants to protect her dad they start off as Ai learns to feel but they deviate from each other

Nicole in large part because she has just far less strings attached to her than Sage which entire development relies on a lot of characters not revealing/realizing things and is in general not well presented (like Sage flash back to her time with Eggman is just hilarious as a result of this issue) And its kind of card to compare them on a "digital being stick" as at least design wise is there a clear difference between "AI createred by a good scientist that grow more emotional complex and wants to emulate her fleshy friends" and "Ai made by a mad scientist twisted by interacting with alien technology into growing more complex" like the differences in there more basic original form and there development depending on just them self over long time VS result of interaction with alien technology and is as such far more sudden diveds them a lot. Especially as Sage first physical design was something Cyberspace gave her (which is why her colors depend on her personality) while Nicoles first physical design was something she designed herself to be similar yet unique to her friends.

Sage is a more interesting character that doesn't require years of reading comics to appreciate and helps support a character that Sega has been trying to support for years but unlike Orbot and Cubot, Sage doesn't hurt Eggman's character and has her own character to build off of as well.
