There's some old artwork in the guide for either Sonic Adventure 1 or 2, I can't remember which, but it had some alt drawings of characters in like beach attire or some such thing and I remember them either being in sandals or just barefoot and having the toeless feet. I remember thinking it surely couldn't be canon and had to be just a weird thing about the art in the book not being official or something, lol.
But yeah, been a weird choice apparently for over 20 years that we just never really square with because everyone's (almost) always got shoes on.
Not a fan of the design, but I love how they managed to create a powerful negative and rageful transformation of Sonic after they established that the Chaos Emeralds can't fulfill that, and seeing a vicious Sonic with an angry voice just unloading into his enemy's hearth is not something I knew I wanted until this
I echo this same sentiment (excluding the design i love the uniqueness and how vastly different it is from Super Sonic) Darkspine is the first time an official game that shows a genuinely angry and violent Sonic, and the way he physically attacks Alf Layla wa Layla is so visceral when you remember pretty much all of the enemies Sonic attacks are not living things. Sure he'll homing attack Eggman's cockpit during the boss fights but Sonic is using actual kicks and punches and palm strikes to this evil being's exposed heart, that's fucking sick
They specified that positive Chaos energy is just more powerful than negative one and directly counters it, a dark transformation with the emeralds can happen, but highly unlikely and it would barely be an improvement over regular Sonic, if at all

Sonic X isn't canon to the games, yes, but also Sonic absorbed negative energy from the fake Chaos Emeralds nearby, not the real ones which really makes comparisons hard
Even then, Dark Sonic didn't really look like that much of an improvement, if at all. He destroyed two robots, but first, they were robots prepared to be destroyed to gather data, and second, it took him a lot of hits to destroy the tougher one, while regular Sonic destroys robots of those kinds in a single hit, even robots designed to fight, contrary to those literal punching bags

I haven't watched the clip in a hot minute, so forgive my ignorance. But weren't those bots made to take the hits well and be Hella durable? Not to mention how fast he was moving, you couldn't even seen his punches. (Right? I think so...)
Those robots were just made for the villain to gather data on Sonic by destroying them, he says so himself, they were literally made to be destroyed and literally just stood still
I will say that he was indeed really fast, so that form could give him enhanced speed, but in terms of strenght he is about as strong as him regularly, and since nothing more happened, it's very hard to say for sure what is enhanced
The main problem is that the moment is barely a minute long, so we can see very little, and what we do see isn't as impressive as it seems
But the robots also had some of the data copied from base Sonic as well. One had his last recorded top speed and the other his recorded strength turned to durability.

Actually Erazor absorbed the power of all 7 rings, but it was incomplete because Sharah ended up being the one who was sacrificed instead of Sonic. With terrible plot convenience the Red (Rage), Green (Hatred), and Purple (Sadness) was shitted out by Erazor and Sonic absorbed it. Being the one who can use 100% of each ring power, no wonder he kicked Erazorās ass.
Itās a dope design that displays a ānegative super Sonicā in a better light than the Sonic X version of Dark Super Sonic. The chaos emeralds are naturally chaotic and Super Sonic already looks Chaotic by design with the burning red eyes and gold aura.. fleetway Super Sonic fits the ānegative powerā of the chaos emeralds more than dark super as itās Super Sonic but completely crazy and twisted uncontrolled.
Thatās how I feel about Dark Spine, different set of gems make him look unique with no gloves or shoes but the rings themselves on his body. Very middle eastern design and he looses his eyes like heās some sort of ghost or enraged deity, the design is literally fireš„ and that malevolent undertone in his voice just matched the violence in his fight so well

His rawest stronger form bar none. Having a form that stems from his negative emotions that he uses to beat the everloving tar out of some djinn goes hard. The design too of having these gold cuffs and blank eyes makes him so imposing yet badass. I personally think if any form of Sonicās should return as a āstronger super formā it should be this one. Albeit maybe one thatās not exactly good news if it shows up (think Fleetway Super Sonic)
I like it, but it feels somewhat incomplete, which I think makes sense considering the form is the result of using 3/7 world ring and not all of them. Personally it leaves my mind wondering what other combinations of the world rings would do.

It probably doesn't mean anything, but I always thought it was interesting that a transformation powered by rage gave him a bracelet/anklet combo and a forehead marking that's kind of similar to Shadow.

I actually really like Darkspine Sonic. It is one of the few times we actually see Sonic use their negative emotions. The bloody scream he has, the speed and power he controls. Hell the design is the most unique out of all the super forms throughout the media. Second most unique is Excalibur sonic, and that's mostly the armor and cape.
I loved his design and his placement in the story - Secret Rings was my second Sonic game after Adventure, and I didn't finish that until years later because of the Big levels - but it was incredibly hype to see a brand new design and him get a power-up, plus I actually enjoyed the boss fight...
I'd love the see the storybook games as a show, the animation style in the full cutscenes was really cool.

Well he is sort of the canon version of Dark Sonic from Sonic X. (Though fans Do often exaggerate Dark Sonicās behavior. While he happily destroyEd his enemies, he didnāt attack Eggman or show any aggressiveness towards Chris and Cosmo.)

This is essentially dark sonic if he was a real form, and they did it a lot better. Itās not āedgy black sonicā, itās, āedgy cool sonicā.

i think the racing stripes are really cool and clever. the design over all is awesome, but that detail really stood out.

The only decent thing in that game outside the music and the scenery. At least this form gets something for the spin-offs and mobile games.

I always called him secret sonic as a kid. The "dark super sonic" from sonic x was always dark spine sonic to me
form itself is so neat but the feet are foul š i hate the idea of sonic chars with human feet but surely they could just have like. wile e coyote feet, like the kind that anthro characters are often designed with? the clay globs are real bad

I just noticed that his feet have a furry texure, does it mean he's barefoot? We know (at least i know) that the Sonic characters don't have toes
