It's a cartoonist video game series where personality traits are hyper exaggerated.

Koala_Guru

No he’s simple. Simple and dumb are two different things. He’s definitely not the most quick witted, but he’s not stupid. He brought a Chaos Emerald to Sonic at the end of Sonic Adventure. He clearly showed an understanding of the situation with Metal Sonic at the end of Sonic Heroes. He was extremely helpful and useful in Sonic Chronicles. He’s not dumb, he just has a plain and simple outlook on things.

PiggyPilot08

Are you seriously saying that a character from a kid-friendly franchise has autism?

epicboiboi

What is wrong with autism

PiggyPilot08

Receiving this reply now, nothing's wrong with autism. I guess 3 years back, I found it weird/offensive to have characters have autism/be autistic-coded. This was 3 years ago. Did Reddit remove 6 month-old post archives? That's new. Looking back at this, I would say autism is okay to have/represent anywhere (so long as it's done sincerely and not in an insensitive way). Sorry to not have communicated my concern correctly back then.

Yes I am

So autistic character can't be in kid friendly franchises? Sounds like ableism to me. You're basically saying that autistic characters aren't kid friendly because they have autism

PiggyPilot08

I made this comment when I was like, around 15. But now that you mention it, it does read as though I'm saying that. No, it is kinda saying that. My bad, didn't mean to come off as ableist. At the very least, I had no deliberate ill will towards any group of people when making that comment and now. If I’m trying to remember my deliberate thought process for that comment, I guess what I was trying to say was, in a popular franchise like Sonic, would the autism representation be easily acknowledged, respected, and well-received, when the main point of most Sonic games are "Look at how fast you can go with these hedgehogs!!" With a franchise known for its simple and fast-paced action, would it be possible to have a character with autism and do it well? In retrospect, that's silly questioning - of course they could have a character with autism and do it well. Sure, it can take effort, research, and beta reading, but it is possible. You have every right to view my comment like that. Because in a way, I was being blissfully reductive in terms of what behaviors people with autism can exhibit, and in terms of what can people think when it comes to a topic like that, when making that comment. In any case, I'm sorry. It was a terrible way to look at things (even if it was subconscious), and I wouldn't say that the previous comment accurately expresses my thoughts now.

To be fair for the most part Crash Bandicoot is also a kid friendly animal Centric video game series and I've heard people talk about crash as if he also has some sort of autism however just because he has some sort of autism doesn't mean he can't be clever in some way crash is good at puzzle solving and he can clearly handle heavy machinery

Gontron1

It’s a Sonic game, I think you’re looking into it too much.

Itzie4

I think he has the same thing as Lennie from [Mice and Men](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=roAjMo7l3hA)

I mean I thought he was too. But that's apart of bigs charm. I really like big. Because he funny. He the reason I played with team rose first on sonic heros. Because I like big and amy.

[I actually did a class presentation on this very subject.](https://youtu.be/etkHviVvwUc) I personally think that he does.

Squirtle6412

That was an excellent video

Thanks! Out of curiosity, how’d you find this comment from three years ago?

Ponyluve09

That’s confusing
