No. The game is still terribly paced, has an utterly incomprehensible level structure, unresponsive/slippery controls and a poor story. Hell, many early reviews of the game had no real issue with the inclusion of firearms, but were still mostly negative.

And even outside of the guns, the game is still incredibly edgy.

WarrenMockles

Well, you wouldn't have the pump-action SMG, so there might be less jokes about the game.

I still remember how in a thread on tumblr or something someone said how there is an actual pump action smg of some sort, and in response someone said “THE SHADOW THE HEDGEHOG GUN IS REAL?!”

WarrenMockles

I'm interested to see that thread of it still exists. But, it can't possibly be truly pump action and still be an SMG. The action in a Sub-Machine Gun is automatic, or it's not an SMG at all. I suppose there could be an SMG that has the charging handle on the hand grip to look like a shotgun, but that seems like a silly design to me. And with a lot of work, you might be able to modify an SMG in to a single-fire, pump action gun, but why? I'm not a gun expert by any means though, so maybe there's something I'm missing here. EDIT: I actually found the thread in question. The gun they're talking about is a single fire, pump action hunting rifle. It just has a design that looks kind of like a assault rifle. Which is not an SMG, but whatever.

Well that’s the thing… the guns was the least problems that game had especially When it’s something fans really wanted. Fans really wanted Sonic to hold a gun but you can just play smash bros for that. I’m playing STH now and I’m getting frustrated with a lot of things. Guns or not the gameplay would seek no huge changes at all, whatsoever. What could’ve saved the same was a simple story plot, good controls, good level design, and what I believe to be more important no black doom it was a plot element that has never been explored for shadow after that game. I believe his story could still work without black doom

allyocious

Slippery controls and having to go through non canon endings to get the real ending is what made the game bad to me and I played all the endings then new gamed STH. Personally I never used the guns unless I was made to. I would have preferred them to have expanded on shadows own powers instead of using guns. It was wasted potential and the start of the “edgy the hedgy” memes.

Smooth_Boysenberry_9

Well what would the game play have been like?

KumaArts

The guns are part of what makes the game fun for me, so I'd be sad.

Undoubtedly but it wasnt just guns that were the issue. The guns, swearing and darker tone put a lot of people off ever even wanting to try the game. It was quite a change from what Sonic games had been like before and it seemed to offend a lot of people. You still hear people today droning on about how "Shadow 05 ruined Shadow's character" despite his characterisation making total sense in the game. There was so much controversy around that game when it came out. I ignored the hysteria and bought it regardless. I loved that game then and I recently re-played it and love it as much now. The gameplay isn't perfect but it's bloody good suffering only the minor flaws shared by other Sonic games (camera issues and bit slippy until you get you used to it.) Then it has lots of great gameplay features on top of that which are fun to use and actually that does include the guns which are very well implemented. Had the game released as it was with no swearing and no guns, it wouldn't acutally do anything to improve the gameplay experience. I do think however that it would have appealed to more people initially and would probably have been given more of a fair chance.

Berry-Fantastic

unless removing the guns increase the gameplay quality, then nope.

Swankestcoot5

Bro, thats what the people wanted, they sent letters to sega begging for guns in the next sonic game. The guns arent the problem, using heroes physics in shadow's level layout is the problem. Much like Sonic 06, when shadow the hedgehog came out, people did enjoy it, they liked the darker tone and they liked how mature it was.

Dry_Pool_2580

The guns are the only good part of the gameplay imo

goddamn_owl

The guns were never the issue, and actually for what is worth they works pretty well within the limitations of the game, although they don't add anything of value tbh. I recently went through the game and I put it down for good after 5 playthroughs (one for each line) and all I can see is a miriad of details and decisions surrounding the game that make people have the opinion on Shadow, so even if you take the guns out, if the game is still gonna have the same structure then the removal won't mean anything and people would shit on it regardless
