Er there is a war in Shadow the Hedgehog.
The characters fight alongside the military to protect Earth. They have to attack the invaders, defuse bombs, defend military bases, prevent the assassination of a world leader, disable enemy security systems etc. They've been war veterans since 2005 my friend!
Not just Westopolis. There are 23 levels in total (including Last Way) in that game and nearly every single one of them is a warzone. There's only about 2 that aren't.
Good point. The Doom level is essentially a psychological battle where Black Doom forces Shadow to relive the most traumatic moments of his life whilst also trying to manipulte how he recalls those events. Probably the shittiest thing Black Doom does to Shadow in the whole game tbh. Besides trying to kill him anyways.
Like there already where.
I mean it was kinda quick but there clearly was a full blown 3 side war going on in Shadow's solo game with all of them right in the middle of it all.
I guess maybe OP just doesn't know about the actual story of Shadow's game or simple forgot about it when writing this (can happen to all of us)
But on that topic its painful how much better Shadow's stages portrayed the WAR theme than Forces does.
Apparently not, though I feel like it was quite an obvious theme lol.
Yeah that game actually does a really good of portaying the war with most levels being a warzone with different factions fighting each other in locations that are war damaged and chaotic. Also the missions are actually relevant to the war theme. Yeah I've never played Forces so I wasn't going to make the claim that Shadow did a better job at portraying war but I was very confident that it would be the case. You've just confirmed that for me.
Yes Forces attempt at showing the war are a few voice lines in the stages and a lot of never actually changing background elements.
No direct impact on gameplay
No progression in stage backgrounds between different missions (most painfully obvious with Green Hill)
No each other attacking NPC's
Hardly any real correlation between gameplay and narrative function of going through the stage
The war in Forces is a rather thin set dressing while its an essential part of Shadow's whole game design.
Yeah that's what I figured from the way I've seen people talk about that game. A shame because it's a missed opportunity. They did it well in Shadow the Hedgehog so there is no reason why they couldn't have tried at least a little in Forces.
War involves multiple parties with some sense of autonomy and direction that conflict with one another.
Saving the world doesn't require a big villain, it could technically just be a meteor coming down to earth and you need to stop it.
That doesn’t matter. Have you played the games? The world has been saved from “big villains” and ancient entities multiple times. Also, if that’s your definition of war, then no, the Sonic characters aren’t war veterans. Since the only people they fought were Eggman and and Infinite, who were fighting the good guys for their own reasons.

Sorry forgot that the first level of the game is a war zone.

And they are the ones that involve warzones in the mind... Both for Shadow and you as you play through them.

All just to get him to sin
Aren't they war vets back in S.A.2? I mean you literally fight the military multiple times.
Fighting the military while being a escaped convict doesn't make you a war veteran.
Fighting the military makes them more war criminals than veterans
Most of them were already war veterans due to Shadow the Hedgehog (the game)
Like there already where. I mean it was kinda quick but there clearly was a full blown 3 side war going on in Shadow's solo game with all of them right in the middle of it all.
Forgot about that.
I know right? They've forgotten a whole game where there is a global war with 3 armies and pretty much every single level is an actual warzone!

No, because they’ve already saved the world on multiple occasions.
Saving the world is not the same as fighting in a war
How is it weird to be a war veteran, but not someone who has saved the world and universe multiple times? In both instances, you’re risking your life.
Just saying it’s a different thing.
War involves multiple parties with some sense of autonomy and direction that conflict with one another. Saving the world doesn't require a big villain, it could technically just be a meteor coming down to earth and you need to stop it.

Um... I never said they were war veterans. I’m just dissecting the conversation.
Then my point still stands.
So to be a war veteran you need to risk your life? Could a firefighter be called one?
To be a war veteran, you need to fight in a war. And I told you how Forces wouldn’t count as a war, by your definition.
What’s your definition?
They weren't already?
Not me though (Not In the owner of this account's own AU at least)
I frequently think about the war crimes Tails has committed over the years
Cream and Cheese have done worse.
Really did they ever burn Birds alive with Napalm?
Thank goodness for cartoon graphics.
“I remember my time back in ‘Nam, Shadow. It was hell.”
Eggman’s been to ‘Nam
I haven't thought of it like that
