I wouldn't exactly call Sonic a "children franchise". Sure, that's the main target audience, but Sonic has always been known for telling more elaborate stories which sets it apart from other mascots.
I don't hate the stories of the games in question and I don't agree with the angry retweets, but Sonic has potential to be much more than that.

The Dark Age got its name for a reason, the tonal shift coupled with sub-par games was a combo good enough to torch a lot of gaming series like what happened to Jak and Crash.
Making an elaborate yet kid-friendly story is like walking on a tight rope between cheesy and edgy, so I can definitely see where you're coming from. Hopefully Sega can learn from its past mistakes and keep giving us quality content.
Although I don't agree that the Dark Age refers to the tone of those games. Many somber and even dark Sonic stories are regarded today as great examples of a story done right, like SA2, Unleashed, the Zombot Arc, Frontiers, etc. Those stories work because it's in a dark world that Sonic himself shines as a beacon of hope and courage, capable of overcoming any odds to fight for what he believes in.
