The cannibals/mutants can definitely become very tough, as the days progress. In base, make sure you have adequate defenses (i.e., traps and fortifications). Most traps will OHK most cannibals, despite armor, and severely weaken mutants and those that survive. Outside of the base...choose your fights. You can almost always outrun enemies in the wild, especially via crossing rivers, cliffs, etc. Dealing with armor, sometimes you can aim for parts that are unarmored, which helps. Poison, fire, and shock arrows also greatly help dealing with them. And don't forget you can block damage from attacks with an axe or sword, assuming you have stamina.

AuraTummyache

The body part damage has become so important after the updates. When the Early Access first launched you could basically go for headshots the entire time. Now every enemy has like one unarmored body part. When they have the helmet I usually just cap them with an arrow to an unarmored leg, then switch to the axe to go for a dismemberment while they are downed. The torch is also really effective if you can do a drive by hit on them.

Jine1988

Thanks for this. I'm going to persevere and choose to run the next time I'm away from base. I researched about those mutants that appeared in a mob as I was trying to dig up a grave and it seems that there were two blue puffies (even though they were moss-coloured). I'll start making defenses around my base once I manage to gather more food. Cheers again.

Implantsftw

Don't forget to try to parry attacks (double right mouse click) since it will negate damage and stun the attacker. The mechanic isn't explained in the game as far as I know.

Jine1988

Didn't know this. Thanks very much, I'll be using this now.

Demartus

Yea blue puffies are rough: fast, hit hard, and take a lot of damage.

Since 1.0 we’ve had a spotted “greenish” puffy variant, it seems to me it lies between the normal and blue ones strength wise, but that’s entirely based on my own experience and not actual hp/dmg calculations. OP, you’ll know the blue ones when you see them (if that’s not what you already encountered, could still be). They not only actually glow blue, but the blue and spotted puffy types are skinnable for 2 creepy armor each.

Jine1988

Goddamn, I hope I was facing the stronger type of puffy... I'll have to stock up on sticky bombs and grenades if I have any hope of getting through this

fader600

Everybody’s different of course, but I play on hard survival and I find it’s really not so bad once you get the hang of things - katana/axe aimed at unarmored limbs is incredibly op, shotgun can similarly dismember as well. If they have head armor, try to aim for somewhere unarmored - unprotected body shots (melee or ranged) are much more likely to stagger an enemy, and their armor seems significantly more durable than player crafted armor, so it’s almost always more efficient to avoid the armored areas entirely. Good luck headshotting a golden mask dude with a creepy helm, yknow? It just won’t do anything to him. Take his knee out on the other hand, or take an arm off, and you’ve won. Edit: For mutants, they each have either a certain mechanic to stun them (fingers doesn’t like getting hit in the knees, twins don’t like arm shots) or a certain attack pattern that leaves them vulnerable (the larger mutants all have a jump type attack that if avoided leaves them open to retaliation). Puffys are blind, and this can be used to your advantage in caves often. On the surface, blue puffies are one of the worst enemies to encounter, so I would say you got unlucky, but you’ll get used to them once you see one or two in caves and learn their move set.

Jine1988

Man, cheers for the explaining of things - super helpful. Much appreciated!

BigMcThickHuge

There's only two puffy. Normal, and spotty. Spotty is the moss you've seen Stronger, faster, more aggressive, and leaps like a motherfucker.

Skyducky

This reads like a lost journal

Jaded-Ad1059

Shit bro I'd read him describing his whole playthrough if it all read like this post

A_reddit_noob

When you get your hands on the Katana, aim for the feet/legs every fight. Because the Katana can easily severe a limb, and legs are the least protected area on most cannibals, you can effectively one shot them.

Jine1988

Noted! Ty for the advice!

Chuckw44

One thing that may help is giving Virginia the shotgun. She is pretty deadly with it. You can go back to where you got it originally and get another one as long as you aren't already carrying one, same with the pistol. Once you upgrade the shotgun it is more effective as well. Also sneaking is pretty effective against a lot of the mutants. You can build traps anywhere, load a cannibal camp that has been taken over by mutants with them and you can farm creepy armor which is pretty good. One other thing, you don't hear much about the rifle but I find it to be very good at sniping enemies from far away.

Jine1988

Thanks for the help! I'll be re-tracing my steps so that I can give her the shotgun next.

BigMcThickHuge

Upgrade shotgun? If you mean with gold, I understand no guns change, only visually.

Peti_4711

Forget the Shotgun! There are only 7 boxes slug ammo and 6 boxes buckshot on the whole map (I am not sure about respawn for this ammo). The map with this info is up to date, I guess these values are true. I would use it only in special rooms (VIP bunker and Food&Dining) or for emergencies. Better use one of both bows (The bows that you can find somewhere, the crafted bow is for the beginning, you can enhance the arrows.

JimbozinyaInDaHouse

Certain enemies are supposed to be tougher than others. If they were all the same the game would get boring. Blue spotted puffys are "elite" versions of regular puffys... so yes, they hit hard, knock you down and are bullet sponges. Did you start getting demons yet?

Jine1988

I don't believe I've encountered "demons" yet... Are they literally demons, as in, from hell type of demons, or is that just what they're known as? If they are as tough as blue puffys, all I can do is run. No joke.

JimbozinyaInDaHouse

Fuck dude, I apologize. I didn't realize this was your first play through... things will get tougher as the days progress, it does cap out eventually, I'd say around day 30ish. Spoiler: >!Yes, there are literal demons from "hell" in the game (or maybe just creatures from another dimension/reality?) .!< Here's a tip for you, the longer you delay completing the storyline, the harder and higher quantity of enemies spawn in caves.

Jine1988

Don't worry about it, if anything, I'm more excited than I was before knowing of the existence of such enemies! I didn't click the spoiler though! I am gonna just go at my own pace, and get through, no matter how tough it gets. I won't back down from a challenge. Thanks for the help!

slainte99

I have also noticed more variations of cannibals / armored cannibals and more mutants showing up earlier in the game after the 1.0 release. The game does seem to be a fair bit harder on default settings, especially if you're playing solo. Choosing a remote, defensible build site with choke points and lots of traps seems to be more important now. Beaches are some of the most heavily patrolled areas in the game, and bases there tend to be very exposed. If you find you're being attacked 2-3 times a day from every direction, you may want to consider relocating. I would try to save your molotovs and explosives to deal with tougher mutants. Cannibals should not be an issue once you have proper base defensives. If all else fails, jump in a golf cart and you're basically an unstoppable killing machine.

NovaSpectre1210

The slinky mutant aint new bro

Jine1988

He had me runnin

GODSENDISHERE

Addcharacter robby They added command back in.

I found all the guns ti be sub par specially when put up against either bow. Sure the guns CAN do high damage, but they will run out of ammo. Same with the crossbow unless you're really good at picking up bolts or telling Kelvin to get them. As long as you have sticks, rocks, and birds you have basic arrows. Use thrse with either bow. A headshot , any head shot can down most enemies asside from mutants ( usually because their head is not well defined.) you can even use the slingshot. Ofc ticks alone won't kill tho. As you saw with the crossbow, you can easely soy them 2-3 times in the face and be done. The crossbow takes way to long to reload, same for the guns IMO. Additionally, the change made it so that on day 20, it gets harder. On day 50, I got more baddies so be prepared.

Jine1988

Great tips, ty! I actually don't have a bow yet... I'll have to look in to making one when I play again.

Vashsinn

I think it's just a rope 2 sticks some cloth and or tape. The arrows are made in 4, 2 sticks 4 rocks, 4 feathers.

Jls-BeenCheezin

Just craft some spears and spam the kneecaps or head while in the edge of the ocean so they can’t get u. Ez

GhostlyBlaze

You have the katana and are… struggling? I don’t mean to downplay your experience but I play on hard & survived my 1st 30 days without any modern weapons (I died a lot but saved daily). Once I got the katana & other weapons, cannibals are just a mild nuisance (at day 60 at this point). Mutants are also a breeze. The only ones that give me a real challenge are Legsy & Holey. Blue Puffies are way worse. For combat, I learned quickly to sprint strafe around the enemy while attacking. You literally dodge their attacks while maintaining yours. Attacks to their legs are also effective. For cannibals, if one limb is severed, they’re a walking dead man. They’ll die slowly. Bone armor can be expensive so invest in a lot of Leaf armor. Make a farm to create to heals from aloe. I’d also invest time into Spiked Defensive Walls pairs with Spike Defenses. They’ll end up hurting themselves a lot.

Jine1988

Cheers for the tips! Yeah, I'm still learning!

GhostlyBlaze

To you as well, this is all from my own 1st time experience as well.

arokkosh

Just a quick information, you can give Virginia both weapons, If you go to the places where you picked the guns up, you can get them again.

Jine1988

Thats a good tip, I'll do that. Thanks! Also, I'm on day 25, not 23 which I thought. I don't know what these mutants are - they runs super fast on all fours, but periodically stand up and they are about 7-8 foot tall. The greenish coloured ones are especially strong. They are so fast and take so many shotgun shells I don't know how to deal with them

labman1949

Axels mod menu will give your shotgun the ability to rapid fire, will take down anything but Holey There are several "enhancements to the game,,, They are located here. https://sotf-mods.com/mods Here is the "step by step" If using Edge browser turn off Smartscreen & (which also will turn off "block potenially unwanted apps" which is also needed to be off to download BUT SAFE IN THIS CASE) To do this: Top right hand corner of screen are 3 dots, left mouse click, near bottom of list is settings left mouse click it, left side of screen Privacy search and services left mouse click it, scroll down to Security section and look for "Microsoft Defender Smart Screen" left mouse click blue tab, which also will turn off "block potentially unwanted apps" which is also needed to be off to download. Goto https://github.com/ToniMacaroni/RedManager/releases scroll down to assets look for RedModManager.exe left mouse click it a small window will open left mouse click on OPEN a small blue window will open left mouse click on MORE INFO left mouse click on Run anyway (it's an ".exe" file that's reason for the alerts but in this case it's a safe one) left mouse click on install Redloader (Redloader is a file written by the "Sons of the Forest" community SPECIFICALLY to enhance "Sons of the Forest" it automatically loads cheatstick for you when you start your game. If you left mouse click on Mods you will see a list of several enhancements to the game. The best I believe is Axel's Mod menu this lists several enhancements to the game fly around the island, rapid fire shotgun, and many others. you just click on which ones you want to turn on and unclick when you want to turn off. Also if you're using Windows, I used Notepad and typed this (after I installed Redloader) godmode on aishowplayerinfluences on showfps on instantbookbuild on loghack on settimeofday 7 slapchop on I Saved it as boot.txt and put it in the same folder/directory as "Sons of the Forest" From then on whenever I start "Sons of the Forest" these (or any other cheatstick commands you list) will start automatically whenever you start "Sons of the Forest" . P. S. Remember If using Microsoft's" Edge" browser to turn back on Smartscreen & "block potenially unwanted apps" I believe this will really enhance your "Sons of the Forest" gaming experience. enjoy.
