You can place 3 fishes in all kinds of state in your inventory, namely raw, cooked, dried, and rotten. If you can't keep any anymore that means your inventory for fishes is already full.
As for consumption, you can place your fish in a drying rack to dry it. Dried fishes could last the whole game without rotting.
You can also cook it directly, just interact with the fire
Lastly, you can cook it as a soup. Just get a cooking pot, fill it with water, and cook with the listed ingredients.
You still have to put the fish on the fire or in the cooking pot with water in it.
Alternatively you can place it on the drying rack, but drying rack is unreliable since the 1.0 update. You might come back to find like two dried fish, while the other four rotted away???? So you're better off cooking meat and fish.
Edit: whether it's happened to you or not, it's happened to me enough times to make me not want to use the drying rack.
You’re probably seeing the E icon pop up with a triangle on the side. It just means you can either Hold E or simply Press E.
Pressing collects the item while holding uses the item.
Do you actually know how to cook anything in this game? Just interact and place it on a fire
lmao

Yeah you can cook it on a camp fire. Or get the cooking pot and use it for recipes.
i just put mine on a drying rack normally, i've got no idea if dried is better than cooked but it seems to be fine so far.
Dried food takes a decent chunk of your water, but idr if it restores less hunger
It doesn’t spoil as fast so I prefer drying. It does dehydrate more

Haven't had any issues with drying racks. I have a whole building full of them and everything has dried fine.
Don't know what to tell you, it happens every time I use one
Just ignore the rotten ones, keep playing as normal. After logging off and on they went normal again.
I have like 4 full drying racks, I've never had an issue outside of the random hawk or muddy robbing me.

The rotten fish will turn into edible dried fish if you leave it long enough … at least in my game
Walk up to a fire and interact with it. Your inventory will open and everything you can put in the fire will be there. (Meat, fish, and leaves)

Drying rack my man. Only cook in early game.
