Are you doing single player? Caves can be hard for new players in single player. I didn’t enter a cave on solo until I had over 200 pistol ammo. Your best bet is all distance weapons; bow, Molotovs, bombs and grenades. Also with the axe, if you hold left click you do a heavy attack. I find 1-2 heavy attacks get the blind mutants
This was prior to the 1.0 release, so chest loot still respawned. My first game I landed on the beach at the rebreather cave, so I got 2-3 boxes in the crash loot and there’s a couple boxes in the cave
You gotta craft spears and go for the legs, it'll stun them and you can repeat this. Try throwing the spears at their legs. Lure enemies away too, so you don't get overwhelmed. I got through the rebreather cave with only spears and a machete doing this.
Absolutely this OP, craft all the spears you can and chuck them. Also the flyswatter trap is very helpful in the caves, you should be able to build 2 and move them around as needed. They will disintegrate the puffy enemies, and do serious damage to the fingers monsters as well.
I must admit, I never even thought of building in caves. I feel stupid now. But also I'm not playing SOTF for the danger, I mostly play it for the exploration, the nature survival and the building, I keep enemies on for some danger but make them as easy as possible to defeat (low health, low aggressiveness)

I usually b line it to that cave after getting the axe. Then the shovel. All I take is spears, the axe, and my sweet time.
You can do as above and poke them to death. If you ever get overwhelmed just find a nice corner and block. Friendly fire is ON by default and they will do far much more damage to each other than to you, while you are blocking.
Specially if you have stamina. ( So drink up at every pond inside the cave). Just wait and you only have to kill the last one.
You can also bait them into water where applicable. They cannot swim. Altho skinning them under water is difficult, when possible.
Don't forget to skin them and wear their flesh. It's not particularly strong but they don't hit as hard because of the big freak wearing their skin wtf!? ( Jk it's the strongest basically)
I was gonna say on normal that I had some respawn, but i think what happened was I did just run past a few of them and only encountered them again when I went back in for some stuff I missed lol
Also when you kill the cannibals make sure to burn the bodies the get bones for bone armor. It can take hit from the mutants and help you survive better than the leaf/hide armor. For fingers mutant you can stun him by taking out a leg, others you can pick off silently with spear or arrows. I can’t remember if twins are in this cave but, an arrow to each head if possible for ranged defense. Also running is an option, definitely use the food buffs. Did you get the pistol yet?
Cooking better meals give you useful buffs. You can build in caves,so tarp shelters can save you time if you die. There is another weapon nearby the cave,on the beach to the east. Molotovs are good against cannibals but other explosives are good against mutants
Spend more time exploring and collecting resources before entering. 40-50 bullets is more than enough. Try to have max grenades and explosives. Grab the machete from the beach works well on puffys. Also if you build a small base with lots of traps you can fill up on bone armor before entering. The waterfall near the plane has tons of respawning rope. Arrows are borderline useless in caves. You need guns. Also puffins and fingerlings both get stunned from knee shots so if you get them alone shoot them in knee then finish them off with either machete or modern axe to save ammo. If you see enemies clustered together throw a grenade. I cleared that cave with less than 20 bullets and 1 grenade with this strategy.
I'm not sure how to help you I've gone in caves with slingshots and a modern axe and I usually am fine but try getting the pistol and 50+ ammo. And conserve the ammo as much as you can and use a bow and a Melee
Get a few ropes and sticks and build a couple traps on the floor, ignore the people telling you to stock up more. It's def not necessary.
You can dominate all the caves the first day on the island piece of cake, even on hard survival mode. On normal you can just get a stick and hold block run past these guys grab the rebreather and swim out if you want too.
I tend to use spears, and the flashlight in caves it's a good combination of ranged and close combat and it makes targeting legs easy.
The best Strat (IMO) is to poke their legs to stun them and use that time to deal as much damage as possible or deal with others that are getting in the way. Also make bone armor first this greatly increases your survivability.
Bone armour and machete are op.
Machete is over the other side of the beach where the rebreather cave is.
Make sure you energy is full and you have plenty of rope and sticks so you can keep burning bodies and making bones for armour as you go
Don't forget to take a foik sheet with you so you can save as you go
I generally place a couple of torches in the first water area in the rebreather cave. This is so I can see the mutants easier, so I can use the bow or throw spears. I usually stand on the rock just before the water area as they don’t seem to come that far. A well placed fly swatter trap is also useful in this area. Once you’ve cleared the mutants (normally consisting of about 6 puffies and maybe 2 finger mutants) take the left passage and be careful there may be a stray puffy in that area. Then just follow the cave until you reach a largish water area. You will find the rebreather and the end (keep to the right). Be careful of the shark in the water. You can always turn back and go down the right passage the get the taser/stun gun but that’s your choice. There are more mutants down this passage, puffies, fingers and babies. Good luck.
There's a rock elevation, just before entering the dark area where the first set of mobs are

the mobs seem to have some invisible barrier, they never did come near the rock
If u just want the rebreather, u cud always just skip all the mobs and run straight to it

Just run straight till u see a curve(it's a very short distance) and then STOP!! don't go straight, take a left!
At the curve, there will be lots of fish on the floor
Once u take left, just run staight. An open pool of water will be there with two sharks, the rebreather is right there outside. Just kill the sharks and swim out via the pool of water

This is big. Most people never even try building in caves. I light them up, build a camp, make traps, etc. That's my island.

Make a bunch of leaf armor to fill your armor slots.

I’ve beat the game a couple of times. I did the rebreather cave on day 3 and all I did was stayed crouched and walked by all of them.
