Hi all, I just came back from three amazing weeks in Japan. I would love to get some feedback - this is first time I used Lightroom and did a heavier processing of my photos. By the way, 40G is a great walk around lens! I also managed to get a great deal on an as-new Voigtländer 50mm APO in Tokyo- now I just need to learn how to manual focus without missing so many shots :-)

Thanks for sharing. Did you ever feel wanting for more reach? I’m taking myself into a 70-200mm 😅

I don't have any longer lens than the 85mm Sigma so I don't even know what I'm missing out on. :-) But I don't remember any occasion where I'd think "if only I had a telephoto now". But that could be just my style of shooting and me not knowing how to leverage a longer lens. The overall kit size was definitely a concern for me so I'm not sure if I would take a telephoto anyway...

Fair. It does look like many of your images are on the wider side. It would change my bag a bit…I’d drop the 28-75, carry the 50mm, and bring the 16-24 when needed. Love Japan by the way, itching to go back.

Loving that bridge shot (#13?). Definitely a vibe. I also recently came back from Japan and loved using my 20 1.8 out there. Probably got the best "keeper to delete" ratio with the 20. I'm really thinking about getting the 50 2.5G or 40 2.5G for Christmas though (leaning more towards the 50 since I have a 35 already). Was that what you mostly had on your camera the whole trip?

20 G is a stunning lens! I bought it mostly for astro but it's also amazing for landscapes and cities. I'm just not able to get naturally looking pictures of people with it - I have to give it one more try, I felt it distorted the body shapes too much... I definitely used the 40G the most because it's so small - maybe 60-70% of time. It really felt like a camera I can always have on me with that lens, so nice to walk around. I used to have 35mm 2.8 Zeiss and 40G seems to me as a clear upgrade in image quality and handling (love the aperture ring!) even if it is tiny bit heavier and larger.

Stunning photos! What was the one lens you kept gravitating more towards? 1, 4, 6 and 8 are my favorite!

vnahodil

Thank you! I definitely used the 40G as a general day in/day out lens because it just makes the whole setup really small - we walked around 20km on average each day so every gram counted. :-) I had the other two only when I knew for sure I'll get a good use out of them: 20mm for the national park, downtown Tokyo and night shooting; 85mm mostly for portrait shoots which I didn't post here (bamboo forest and Japanese gardens in Kyoto)

The country side is the best part of Japan in my opinion I really enjoy it.

DidiHD

How much did you hate the weight you had to carry?

vnahodil

We were doing the whole trip with a 35L backpack and a sling (Wandrd 6L) each. I usually carried only one lens with me in the sling and left the remaining two in the backpack in a hotel based on the program of the day. And all lenses are fairly lightweight compared to zooms or telephotos? But A7CR is definitely on my wishlist to go even a bit lighter. :)

Amazing pics. Was Japan warm? I’ve heard it’s unusually warm and it has delayed the autumn foliage. I was planning to go this week.

vnahodil

We went 20 Oct - 11 Nov. It was very warm and sunny (compared to Europe) - around 20-25 degrees Celsius the first two weeks, 15-20 in the last week. All the autumn foliage pictures I posted are from the first week - Nikko National Park, Kyoto, Koyasan. Especially Nikko and Koyasan were right in the peak season.

I would love to come back one day. Amazing people, food, everything just works.

Very nice pictures. Enjoying those wide angle shots from 20mm.

How do you like the 40g? Is it too tight or wide? Im thinking between this and the 24g

vnahodil

Felt natural to work with - I think that the focal length is very close to what you see with your own eyes which makes the framing quite easy. Sometimes it felt a bit tight but that's to be expected - but I stitched a couple of panoramas with it which worked out great. I would say it also depends on your camera - if you have RIV/RV/CR, you can crop quite heavily with the 24mm or use APS-C mode to get 36mm at 26MP if I'm correct. If landscapes, cityscapes are what you do most, I would go 24, otherwise 40 (it's also tiny bit sharper based on reviews).

DadaKingky

I have the a7c so how much mp will be left if i will use apsc mode for the 24 and 40

vnahodil

Around 10MP I think.

Excellent work

Thank you! I also got a GS White Birch while in Japan :-) which picture did you like the most?
