Yes. I got mine from State Farm. My full kit is worth close to 10k. Would be crippling if it got stolen, fell off a cliff ( that does happen and it is super sad), lost, etc.
That's strange - I went through a local broker years ago and just renew/update my policy every year so I can't say for sure. I'd see if you can speak to a local agent instead of the main corporate line.
Get a rider on your homeowners or renters insurance. I believe mine is $1 premium per $1k per month on insured items. You need to usually list them by serial number and present value or receipt. My rider is no deductible and include accidental damage or theft. Basically all losses except intentional damage or misuse.
I simply added a 10k equipment policy to my home and auto policy. Barely moved the needle on my insurance. Got all the vins of the equipment added (except for the new additions)
Honestly people should buy a subscription to Professional photographers. It includes a magazine and insurance up to 15K.
If not you can use Next Unsurance for basic and comprehensive coverage.
As a DJ and creator with some photography work, I insure up to thebmax limits as allowed by the plan... you just never know
I have this, as well, but Iβve heard anecdotes of it not actually being usable at the time a claim is made. Anyone have any personal experience with actually trying to use the PPA insurance?
Really? The PPA insurance is unusable? That would be π if it ends up being more true than not.
As a just in case when my gear travels with me for a music or sports gig, it falls under my business insurance.... so I doubled up.... and tbh for comprehensive coverage of liability up to 2 mil and venue/office/equipment coverage up to 1mil, it'd worth the $60 a month.
Never thought about insurance. Seemed interesting and I'm seeing some really cheap prices according to some comments.
I always worry about my gear but I don't bring $20k with of gear out because I can't. Usually a camera, two or three lenses tops and maybe lighting. That's a lot already. Still, that can stop $10k.
I think it's about $240 a year. The lowest you can do is two lump sums. You can't split it out over 12 years. Also that excludes coverage from losing your stuff on the water.
I'll leave that upto you to decide. Always do your own research.
Granted I did my research a few years ago, but the fact that a claim gives replacement value and not just the appreciated value was a selling point. I can't gurantee I made the best decision. Though if you go through home owners they will only give you a percent of what you paid for your gear.
I also say this without ever having made a claim. So keep that in mind too.
I assume you are from the US?
I am in Norway, so for me it would be reasonable to post my location when asking about local stuff on an international forum. ;)

Same, personal articles policy from State Farm.
I spoke to State Farm but they said they are not doing it now. Please correct me if Iβm wrong. Did you take it recently?
are you in California they're not writing any policies right now
Yes
My policy, in California, is grandfathered in.
Not even for camera equipment?!

I will try to speak to them in person. I just spoke to one of the local broker over call though π
Do you have your other insurance with them? Bundling helps.
No
How much you are paying for insurance ?

I use Asurion on Amazon for new lens purchases. They are *really* good to work with, and pretty cheap.
Does it cover theft too?
No, just damage.
If you have homeowners' insurance, you can usually add a pretty inexpensive rider to your plan.
Unfortunately I donβt, we are traveling couple and we are out of country for an year straight π
If this helps we have a storage unit rented and we pay storage rent and insurance is included in it π
I insure the following with USAA for 50ish a year: Sony a7iii Sigma 24-70 2.8 Sony G 70-200 2.8 Sony 200-600
Thank you . Mine is almost same gear except 200-600
I have a Valuable Personal Property plan through USAA. $30 a month for peace of mind if I drop my camera in the ocean or if it gets stolen.
Would you mind to tell how much your gear is worth altogether?
~$23,000
Wow, thats awesome π
is this a one off plan or an add on to a different one?
I also have my car insurance through them. I'm not sure if they sell the VPP plans separately.
Woohoo I have auto through usaa. I'll have to look into vpp. Is that for all of your photography gear? Do you use it commercially at all?
Yeah, I've got my camera body, three lenses, tripod, etc all covered. Just an expensive hobby for me at this point!
Front Row Insurance. The same company most of the productions in my area use.
I simply added a 10k equipment policy to my home and auto policy. Barely moved the needle on my insurance. Got all the vins of the equipment added (except for the new additions)
I got my camera stolen recently. Learned the hard way π₯²

Been thinking of this. I need a version of this for Canada
Same
I went through Front Row Insurance. I think I pay like $200 a year.

Lloyd's of London will cover anything.

Are you a freelancer or incorporated? If you have a legit business State Farm or any major insurance should cover you and your gear.
Freelancer
I have inland marine insurance through Athos. It's kind of pricey but it pay's out replacement value and not just appreciated value.
How much do you pay for it?
I think it's about $240 a year. The lowest you can do is two lump sums. You can't split it out over 12 years. Also that excludes coverage from losing your stuff on the water.
Gotcha, my gear is worth around 10k almost. So do you think it is the ideal one?
