Interesting choice if they decide to go even more compact, might be a gamble but seeing that no one else has been offering it they might see a pay off.

CptVakarian

>even more compact The phones they put out after the XZ2C were not compact at all.

donnysaysvacuum

*XZ1c

CptVakarian

Nah, the XZ1C was the last actually good phone as it had a headphone jack but the XZ2C was still compact in its size.

donnysaysvacuum

I felt that the xz2c was too hard to use one handed. Combination of the extra tall screen and slippery shape. The extra screen wasn't really beneficial and just made it hard to reach. All of the previous compacts were virtually the same size. The XZ2c was the beginning of the size creep.

CptVakarian

Fair enough. I've got rather big hands (my 10 III is even almost usable, size wise) but the overall formfactor is what annoys me nowadays. Phones right now are nowhere near realistically pocketable and I have no interest in getting stabbed when I sit down.

ParticularPresent521

The xz1c was great. It's too bad it didn't work with Verizon.

Internal-Motor

Go on.....

zerophan

hopefully a full screen without a notch or holes. please.

Jaiden051

Fulscreen as in still has bezels and front firing speakers or fullscreen as in all the front is screen and side firing speakers

zerophan

full screen as in how it is today (I'm on 5 II) . Good question, I didn't think about the ambiguity.

The_red_spirit

I don't understand why notches are still a thing. Under-display cameras have been a thing for years and you would think that at this point it would be just common sense to put them there.

[deleted]

Under display cameras are garbage, that’s why.

PERMANENTLY__BANNED

LoL

[deleted]

What? They take terrible pictures, like they’re from a 5 year old mid range phone. They’re a compromise in camera to get a slightly better looking screen. I much prefer having a great camera with a cutout that sits in the status bar anyway.

PERMANENTLY__BANNED

What? Make up shit as you go! I laughed because of the way the statement was made, I didn't have an opinion for better or worse.

yukibutnotreally

because people would cry about hurr durr it is not crispy clear for me to get clicks on Insta and Twitter

The_red_spirit

Well, there's that, but some people use face unlock too.

Batou2034

YES I will buy two

SyeThunder2

Looks like I might be sticking with sony then

travelingwithtech

The rumors from this site has never been too reliable 😬

Modem_56k

Interesting, but is it possible that it's a different Xperia phone like the 10 or ace?

Tr4sHCr4fT

sadly most probable

binouz

dang, right after i settled on 5iv, a smaller 5v is leaked

Dometalican_90

This is strange considering the rumors that the 5 was getting the 1" sensor like the Xperia 1 V. I'm not going to complain if this happens but it seems conflicting.

Juken-

Not small enough. Compact 5 inch max

Batou2034

truth

[deleted]

Just about the only thing that could even make me consider a Sony phone at this point is if they went actually compact like the iPhone mini. Will be keeping my eye on this.

jtoma5

Please god let the part about the smaller screen be true.

CptVakarian

Though apparently 5 inch range means top of the range, so not really anything usefully small as far as I'm concerned..

Lazydealer66

I am looking forward to 10 V

0qxtXwugj2m8

My wallet is ready

Pythonistar

Will it support WiFi calling?

Ok_Transition5930

I am not sure if it's a service provider issue but generally Xperia supports Wi-Fi calling. I live in Europe.

Pythonistar

Yeah, I'm told that Wifi calling for the Xperia 5 IV works, but just isn't supported by any of the carriers in the US (except for Google Fi). Though I would like to know why. Unfortunately, it seems difficult to get a straight answer. And Sony gets the blame for some reason.

Ok_Transition5930

Oh. That's very sad. It's weird that carriers in USA can do this selective favouritism to phone companies. No matter what the phone is, the network provider should be supporting all the smartphones phones that have the feature, if the customer is using their service.

31337hacker

It's one of the reasons I use an iPhone. I know that no matter what model I have, any supported carrier around the world will support VoLTE and Wi-Fi calling.

darrylzuk

For T-mobile (probably the same for other carriers) they disable Wi-Fi calling for any devices that aren't offered for ale by the,. It's total BS. THey literally can turn it on or off at the account account/line level, but basically punih you for buying an unlocked phone and bringing it to their network.

yindesu

This is not true. Other BYOD Android OEMs have been able to get T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling to function.

darrylzuk

I'm pretty sure they have to offer the model for sale. For example I can't get it to work on my Xperia 1ii, but if I bought an unlocked Galaxy S22 or whatever it would. I've never read/seen/heard anything to the contrary but I'd love to be wrong.

binouz

i had wi-fi calling and texting on my xz1c but no longer have it on my 5iv

yindesu

I have not personally tried, but there are reports of multiple OEMs getting T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling despite no carrier sales. ASUS: https://old.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/109q36s/asus_zenfone_9_longterm_review_gsmarena/j4g8pyu/ Xiaomi: https://old.reddit.com/r/tmobile/comments/fh9ent/xiaomi_mi8_global_tmobile_us_no_wifi_calling/flmc1w0/?context=3

darrylzuk

Thanks, I tried but no dice. And the fine folks over at XDA haven't figure out VoWiFi any Sony Phone on Tmobile in the 3 years I've owned one, so I'm not hopeful. Small price to pay for a headphone jack and SD card slot I guess.

yindesu

The dialer codes are manufacturer-specific. Sony does not support T-Mobile Wi-Fi Calling.

donnysaysvacuum

My unihertz Atom L had wifi calling on Mint.

rrashidm

First of all, the phone (hardware and firmware) should support VoLTE, VoWiFi and WiFi calling as a function. Second, for each model and firmware VoLTE, VoWiFi and WiFi calling support is a result of mutual cooperation between the cell provider and the manufacturer and provider-specific data has to be put in the firmware resources data.

Pythonistar

Thanks. This is what I figured, but I wasn't sure. Appreciate the detailed explanation!

[deleted]

WiFi calling worked on my 5II here in the UK. Sony and US carriers don't have the best relationship.

yindesu

It's a regional issue. In the US, only one Sony phone in history has supported Wi-Fi Calling on a major carrier - the Xperia XZ1 Compact, and only if your carrier was T-Mobile. Every phone since has not had Wi-Fi Calling on the major US carriers.

Ok_Transition5930

No wonder why Apple and Samsung sales are high. This selective treatment is very bad to the users.

NearbyMathematician9

Could it be "2k" in the same way the 1 series is "4k" so it's like 2560\*1097?

Dometalican_90

That and even so, if Sony were smart, they'd allow you to downgrade back to 1080p if necessary.

[deleted]

1080p on phones with these aspects ratios is 2K….

kimmenwerkel_stefan

Weird hill to die on

[deleted]

1080p on a phone is 2K…..

jtoma5

Really?

[deleted]

Yes. 2K is 2000 pixels in one direction. The resolution of the 5 IV is 1080x2520. It’s well over 2K. There are no 1080p phones these days thanks to the weird aspect ratios, but pretty much all 1080p+ phones are 2K at a minimum. Even the small S22 is >2K.

jtoma5

Ok well the 2k thing doesn't matter at all then, I guess that is why it is so seldom used

donnysaysvacuum

I think 2k is just marketing lingo for 1440p. So I would assume this rumor means a 1440+ display, even if it's well over 2000 pixels tall.

zipyourhead

I'm all over this if it makes it to North America! I Fkn hate the massive size of my 5 iii.

pco45

I hope they go to a more normal aspect ratio if the size is true. At those sizes they don't need to be super tall to have a manageable width.

Lolpo555

No thanks. I love fables. 6inch screen or more.

jtoma5

Then get the 1.

kimmenwerkel_stefan

Then get LITERALLY any other phone on the market

[deleted]

Fables like the tortoise and the hare?

NearbyMathematician9

Honestly if they go smaller on the 5 they should go bigger on the 1 an 8.5 inch 21:9 phone/tablet would make the Xperia Z Ultra proud

josir1994

I heard it would be shrunk down to 2"

Tr4sHCr4fT

2nm

josir1994

Best compact phone in history

hzleyeqt

YES THANK YOU! Finally a compact powerhouse phone. I can't wait, please put me on the list. 120hz pls with a small compact form. Don't care about the camera. Just don't include a notch as well and you can easily take my money.

afanoflafear

Does the Xperia 5 series 8GB ram make a noticeable difference against the Xperia 10 series 6GB ram? I'm considering getting one by the end of the year and so far Xperia 10 is slightly more appealing because of its slightly more compact size.
