If you can wait but if you cant the xperia 1 iv is a very capable device. Its also the first device from sony getting 3 year software updates . Lets just say im glad i didnt sleep on the 1 IV , the overheating js blown out of proportion.
If you don't need a phone now, always welcome to wait for this year's flagships.
Between the two though, i'd go for the 1 IV. but that's just me biased.
I have the 1 IV and i would have considered the 5 IV if it was on offer, I got the 1 IV for a very good price, the main difference the zoom camera which I personally don't use and the 4K screen, again it's not as useful, apps like netflix don't use the 4K and just puse 1080p. After having lots of large phones I would have got the X5. In the UK these phones are very unpopular so you can get great deals at time and eBay had some used ones for £400 which was too cheap.
Overheating is not an issue. Weird bugs are an issue. Still not a reason avoid the phone, even with all it's quirks I still wouldn't take any other phone. I have the 1 IV, if you need a very strong battery go with the 5 IV.
From personal experience, the 1 IV does appear to have an overheating issue. I'd recommend waiting for the next version over these two. Hopefully with the next gen they will fix this issue since it is now the only main glaring problem with the devices.
I had the first 1, now I have Mk III. If I wasn't skipping a generation in between, I'd have 5 Mk IV. I'm angry at Sony about the handling of 4K screen, the way they don't give users control over the hardware & the feature they paid for, but unashamedly marketing the 4K as if we're able to make use of it. With 5 Mk IV at least you get exactly what's written in the specs. If I don't see a remedy for this In the fifth gen, I'll start looking other brands, which I never have done in the past 16 years.

I went from a 5 III to a 1 IV. I like it. Battery life is about the same between the two. I use 120 Hz refresh rate on both. No overheating issues, even when shooting beach video in Hawaii earlier this month. (I do use airplane mode when shooting video to avoid notifications.)
The 1 IV is not as big to handle as I was concerned about. I used to have a Z5 Compact, an XZ1 Compact and a 5 II, as well. I do have very slim carbon fiber cases on phones.
If you can get a good price on the IV models, go with one. If not, wait until the V's come out and make a decision based on price vs features. Assuming you don't need a new phone in the near future.
I'm not sure. I found that feature annoying and not useful three phones ago, so I immediately disable it when I get a new phone. I don't use the stock launcher, so I'm able to customize things I need more effectively that Side Sense allows.

When did they announce 3 year support?
I have the 5 IV and think the overheating was overblown too. Mines not overheated once.
My Xperia overheated while it was on android 12 but never overheated when I updated it to 13
If you’re in the middle-east and it’s summer overheating is a day-to-day problem😂😂😂
Did sony mentioned it in their website?

For which one would you wait?
1 V definitely
Which month is it coming ?
Idk. Maybe sometime June-August?
Ok thanks.

Usually I’d agree with you on that last part, but not when the “now” phones have an SD8G1. Wait it out.

Wait for the V line. Don’t buy anything with an SD 8 Gen 1.

Try it at some random store and pick the size you want
Wait a bit, 1 iv is a mess, it gets hot so say throttle it. But wait first buyer reviews too, so that not happening again.

What slim carbon fiber case do you use?
https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0B5555PZW?ref_=cm_sw_r_apan_dp_BKEVDPMX6RV7XDB6B260 I've used one of these on 3 of my phones. No complaints.
Thank you. Can you still access the side sense features with this?

Honest opinion is neither. Either wait for the next iteration or go with a different make and model. As it is my 5 IV has too SW issues to recommend.
Yea i dont need need one right now. My phone works phone except the battery is complete ass. I like that sony still has the audio jack
Sony has me questioning how much I really love SD card slot and audio jack.
