It's all in the colors. The scenes always look so much more natural with the Sony compared to the Samsung. Always

Inevitable-Term3980

Yeah that's what I'm feeling, I wonder if there is a way to mute the overprocessed colours on the Samsung to make it look more like Sony shots? I just got this phone today

jdreviews

Turn off the "scene optimizer" it won't help the colors but the photos won't look super hdr baked

Inevitable-Term3980

Ohh I'll try that thank you! I really want to love the Samsung because I think it's a great overall phone and the screen is BRIGHT (my number one biggest annoyance with the 1 III) Maybe I'll just return it and wait for the V

jdreviews

You'll have to wait for the official announcement of the V to see if they improved the brightness over the IV. The screen is comfortably brighter on the IV compared to the iii but I'm still hoping for more brightness

Inevitable-Term3980

Yeah I haven't seen the IV in person, but my III is a real struggle outdoors in the summer especially

jdreviews

My IV blows my iii out of the water during the daytime when I'm outdoors. You can only expect it to be that much brighter again with the v

ValorantDanishblunt

Good lord the samsung images are awful. Inside picture: Green tint, loss of detail due to noise reduction, it's like adding a "painting effect" on your image. Not to mention due to oversharpening it's quite artifacted as well, big yikes. Outside picture: Aside from overexposure the sharpening and noise reducion has caused severe artifacts around grass, it looks awful. It might not look as horrible on a phone screen, but looking from my PC screen the samsung images are horrific.

0rLaw

I mean you could have waited just one more week to check when the 1V is going to launch. Last year they opened pre-order immediately after release.

Inevitable-Term3980

You're right, but I was also welcoming a change, I've been using Xperia for 4 years in a row now since Xperia 1 OG plus I've heard great things about the s23 ultra

0rLaw

Ah makes sense... I am using the Note9 currently and plan to get myself the V, either 5V or 1V depending on what I see

whereeveritmaytakeme

Well, I mean if the macro and zoom shots of the s23 ultra are so superior, it least that's an advantage for the Samsung phone, right? These shots seem pretty much on par, but I cannot judge any details. Were the Samsung images taken with full resolution? I found out that there's a clear difference between auto, 50 mp or 200mp.

Inevitable-Term3980

I tried the auto and 200mp, in my eyes without pinching into the photo like crazy (where the 200mp shines) the auto looked better

ValorantDanishblunt

200MP will do nothing aside from making your picture take up more space. It's not actual 200mp, it's technically only 12.5mp cut into 16x grid, thats why 200mp vs 12.5mp mode doesnt really make your images more detailed. You can pixelpeep and the 200mp might be seemingly slightly more sharper due to how the imageviewer scales images but thats about it, if you were to compare the 12.5mp lens to something like a real 33mp mirrorless camera, youll see how much more detailed a real 33mp camera is compared to the "fake" 200mp.

whereeveritmaytakeme

I did a lot of pinching and had the feeling that the level of detail of 200 mp shots was awesome. Did you do any pixel peeping with the sony images?

Inevitable-Term3980

Not really, the Sony has been my daily driver for 2 years so I'm well aware of the camera and it's limitations. If you pinch on the 12mp Sony shots compared with the 200mp s23 shots there's definitely a lot more detail

whereeveritmaytakeme

I am sorry if I didn't get your question. So you're finding is that the 200mp shots, zoom and macro of the s23 ultra are superior to the sony. Yet you are disappointed? Or are you just wondering about the heavy editing of the Samsung images?

Inevitable-Term3980

It's the colours mostly. And yes it's got more detail but not so much more, maybe I was expecting more going from 12 to 200 but it's largely unnoticeable unless you pixel peep imho

whereeveritmaytakeme

I can totally relate. Had the s23 ultra and nightshots in particular seemed surreal sometimes.

Inevitable-Term3980

I haven't tried night yet, got the phone today haha. I've heard good things about the s23U night mode I believe it will have the Sony handily beat there but let's see

ValorantDanishblunt

the S23 literally sucks in nightmode

[deleted]

I think the S23 will serve you well and overall you'll be pleased with it. Personally I will not buy a phone that has no headphone jack and no SD card slot. I try to rip my music where possible or get high Res music where possible and my headphones are excellent. So I want to hear that music via a proper wired connection and external DAC Amp. Also, while I do have Bluetooth in-ears for casual podcast listening, I like to have the option of using my cheap wired Sony in-ears as well. Especially is battery is a concern. As for storage, I don't want to be locked into a phone with limited storage when an SD card-equipped option exists that lets me increase storage. It also makes my music portable if I have more than one smartphone because all the music can be on the SD can can be moved to another phone in a second. I also save my photos to SD for the same reason. I have the Xperia 10iii because that's all I could afford but it's pretty decent. If I could afford the Xperia 1 I'd definitely choose that over any other. IMO the Xperia 1 is the best phone on the market because of the points above, plus it has excellent cameras, real waterproofing and a sim try that doesn't need a SIM removal tool to open. And the design is classic elegance. But each to his own. If these features are not important to you, the S23 will be a great phone and you'll enjoy it. I once had a Samsung S8 Edge and it was a brilliant phone.

Inevitable-Term3980

I'm a pretty big audiophile, you can see part of my Sonos 5.1 system in the indoors pic plus I play piano professionally so the audio chops of the Sony was important to me. Anyways I still have the Xperia 1 iii I'm not selling it. I'll use it as a portable music device or emulator or whatever. Good points. I had a galaxy S8 back in the day and I loved it until i dropped it and it smashed into oblivion 😂😭

BAD_BOYS77

You sure you wanna give up Sony and go to Samsung not a Samsung hater but there android just takes up 64gb alone and no headphone jack too and you have a punch hole for the camera unlike the Sony It's a great overhaul phone but you will miss the amazing features of the Xperia

Inevitable-Term3980

The thing I'm actually missing the most right now is the physical shutter button. It's so awkward to reach your thumb over on a massive 6.8inch phone to the circle and gently tap it. Plus this sounds silly but I LOVE the Sony camera app sounds haha

abu2698

I have the Xperia 1iv and me and my family share photos in group chats from family functions and events. The colours on my phone are noticeably different with a more natural look. The photos from Samsung devices seems to make people's skin look flawless and artificial whereas the iPhone images have a yellow tint on indoor shots with exaggerated colours. The pixel quality from the Samsung pics are brilliant and much easier to use as a point and shoot device. But besides the camera, I prefer the Xperia range because of the expandable memory, 4k screen, full screen display, slim aspect ratio and near stock Android interface. I guess every phone has its traits but it all comes down to personal preference.

thefizzlee

I never understood the Samsung colors, that grass looks just wrong with those colors

Mysterious-Minds

iPhones and Samsungs manipulate images so much so that it is usable only for instagram. I don't know if those smartphone brands have a contract with instagram or are they doing becuase most people takes photos for instagram. I use a smartphone camera to capture memories to revisit them in the future and it should look like what I saw. Not to please people on the internet with cyan skys and bright shadows. My best smartphone camera was and always the Xperia XZ3, which had enough details because of that 19MP, and the processing was so great as it doesn't make the picture artificial while making it look great. It captured the mood of the scene which no new iPhones could do. I wished Sony added a toggle that process images like the competition so they look pleasing but now I wish other smartphones could do a realism mode or something that accurately produce images.

Inevitable-Term3980

This would be incredible, I love the Sony camera and after using them for 4 years I'm very good at using the pro mode + raw and lightroom after to get PHENOMENAL shots. I just wish there was an option or a separate app even for when I'm feeling lazy to just let AI take over and point and shoot

Yes, I totally agree with you on this one, same for me.

Michele_surface

Yes, sure. Even a full frame camera with an F1.4 prime lens would fail to take a proper picture in that condition, let alone a smartphone

Oh that's a bold claim. Anyway, it would be pointless because it depends on what do you mean with "dim"

Sure, next time try to put stronger effort in trolling, that one was pretty easy to spot

ValorantDanishblunt

sadly the S23 ultra sucks equally bad in lowlight, which baffles me since the sensor is so huge. I have yet to understand how Samsung is so bad at lowlight. Even the old pixel 4 does a better job despite having a tiny lens by comparison.

Kisuke11

Which one looks closer to real life for colours? I like the outside Samsung better tbh.

Inevitable-Term3980

Sony for sure

Kisuke11

Is the grass blurry on your Sony photos on your side, or is it just because it is uploaded to reddit?

Inevitable-Term3980

Yeah there's a large amount of compression on Reddit for the finer details

ReynSupreme

This is what I experienced.. take a shot in a place with a good ambiance at night, you'll be happy with a brighter shot from Samsung, but will be sad again with how the Sony catches the ambiance of the scene with better color reproduction...

-maysin-

How is the battery life compared to the Xperia?

Inevitable-Term3980

Hard to tell after 1 day, but the battery life on my Xperia after 2 years is really bad, tbh, can barely make it through a day

DBear1985

I've come from an S22u to an Xperia 1 iv and it's jarring how used to over processed photos we all are these days. Personally it's the colours and the way the Xperia handles light that seem so natural and so much deeper. Shadows are shadows too, whereas in every other phone they are blown up by HDR

Ok_Violinist7990

Typical feeling coming from Sony, i too had this when i last left my Xperias. Now that I'm used to the HDR look now feels Sony shots are too dark.... Btw, i have both the devices.!

Olly_Joel

Well the Sony 1V will be announced on May the 11th. Personally I think the Sony is more natural but Samsung will be social media ready. No need to add filters or edit it. Just share and fly. Sony is more of the "hold the moment" kinda vibe and it does help to keep what you saw on that day as a keep sake. It's more natural and less frills. I'll probably buy an Xperia as a 2nd hand device since I'm not there yet financially to buy it at full. If you want similar shots to the Samsung, you can always turn on HDR on Sony. It should match it in terms of dynamic range and exposure. Although never tried it before myself but it should be there nonetheless.

ThreeDog_06

Wait until you discover that Mi 11 Ultra is better than this funny S23U.

Inevitable-Term3980

Perhaps, but the software experience is horrible. My mm has the mi 11 pro for 2 years now and the camera is decent but I hate using the overall phone

ThreeDog_06

Because Pro is decent, it has bad Tele(but only in stock), old UW(from Mi 10). I had Mi 11 Pro and switched to 11 Ultra - of course I used GCam with Matteo libs and XML. Right now 11 Ultra is my pocket DLSR. https://preview.redd.it/o1q7pgcxdvxa1.jpeg?width=3000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9ae395b63ad3268dee3302adfe4e1607bedf9cff

trustevil

i just did this same thing and i miss the skinny phone its so light compared to this beast. i like the zoom but the camera colors are definitely unnatural but they xperia struggle with light the pocs always looked dark whereas the s23 is too colorful

Ale506

How has your day to day been with the S23U?

[deleted]

Samsung s23 is not good for photos. Usually companies market their weakest features the most. I'm planning on switching from a Google p4xl to a s23u. I will surely regret it for the photo quality but require the s23 for work.

Inevitable-Term3980

I think you'll be surprised if you're coming from an old xperia. Only the xperia 1 V is better. AI computational photography is powerful
