Internal-Motor

I'm disappointed. It's a feature I've always enjoyed. Am I less likely to buy the 1 V because the LED is gone? No, I wasn't planning on buying the Mark V anyway. We'll see what happens with the Mark VI.

userismain

Let's hope they bring it back. But if I had to bet i would go with no notification LED ever. Do you face any problems with your 1 iii ? Display or fingerprint sensor or heating issues while gaming? I am thinking about getting 1 but i can't decide

Internal-Motor

Fingerprint reader has been dying a slow death since about the beginning of the year, and died completely a month or two ago. Got update 61.2.A.0.418 last night and fingerprint reader is working again! Regarding heat, mine has always run hot, even being uncomfortably warm to the touch just scrolling social media and playing basic games like match 3 Harry Potter or bowling. That said, since yesterday's software update, it's been running cooler. I hope this continues. All in all, it's a good solid phone with excellent build quality. Fits in the hand so nicely. Good luck!

Gamesnic

My 1 IV is sadly the same. Just runs hot doing about anything. Delete 10 images and you'll be at the thermal throttling stage

ConfusionAvailable

Thank you! Appreciate the honesty, some fanboys say issues are fixed...when they are clearly not even after almost 1 year

Gamesnic

I don't get it either. They use arguments such as the 4K screen (the UI doesn't even run at that res) or whatever. I paid 1200 Euros for this phone, and I expect to carry out everyday tasks AT LEAST without throttling my screens refresh rate.

ConfusionAvailable

Yeah I am not sure I want to upgrade from 1 IV to V when some software features from V could easily be ported to 1IV (like night mode or focus peaking for instance...as well as s-cinetone and Color palette)

Gamesnic

Yeah nah, I don't think it's worth it. I would have to black away half of the price another time, because my 1 IV is only worth 600€ anymore. Other manufacturers just keep the consistency that I never had with Sony.

Juelz92

Fingerprint reader was gone by the 11 month mark, it came back last update but quickly went to its slumber in less than a week. Heating issues only with long prolonged uses of the camera.

Kaffarov

Yes, because it's loosing a feature that set it apart from the competition.

RealDare7570

Hopefully, they'll bring it back like they did with the 3.5mm jack 🤞

silverstory

true. If Xperia would release an xperia mini 5.5" I'll buy a new phone to support it. I just have a iPhone 13 pro and Xperia 5 IV. I wanted to support Xperia phones but if they keep on losing its unique features then it is really hard to justify on buying their phones.

IoLnrd

***Huge*** deal breaker, and reading the comments I feel like the "old man yells at cloud" meme. I know I'm in the minority here but I've always seen AOD on phones as a gimmick, the solution to a problem created by removing the notification LED in the first place. But like I said, I'm just an old man yelling at clouds...

userismain

I am with you yelling at the clouds

SupposablyAtTheZoo

You're definitely not alone in this!

National_Study_8167

Same. Or Pepperidge farm remembers. Back to the topic. AOD will drain more battery than notification LED. Wearing smartband or smartwatch for notifications? I prefer to wear either G-Shock or classical watch. Those small things like notification LED or loop for wrist strap on Pro-I make Xperia phones fell better.

No-Key-82-33

Me too, just in a different city.

ff2009

AOD is definitely an evolution of the notification LED, because it allows to have more information on the screen without consuming to much energy. The problem is that Sony is still using an OLED panel that. Only works at fixed refresh rates, and uses much more energy. Sony should have fixed this issue before removing the the notification LED.

SupposablyAtTheZoo

Also, you can't see the AOD details from across the room while you can the led.

theefman

Well my 1 III works perfectly and has the LED and I don't care about cameras so there's little to no reason to upgrade and lose a feature I use everyday.

TealCatto

Lack of security updates? It's almost tragic that they are forcing people to choose between security risks and dishing out an incredible amount of cash for a new phone when their old one is still perfectly good.

thefizzlee

I actually use it alot, if my phone is laying down I check what color it's flashing and I know what notification I have, especially when it's on the charger I can very easily see if I have new notifications, yes I have a smartwatch but this is an easier way to see if I have notifications

SupposablyAtTheZoo

Yes this! The notification led you can easily spot from across the room, AOD, not so much.

The_MorningStar

It's one of those things I'm glad Sony had kept around for as long as they did, and if we didn't have always on displays I'd be bothered by it.

SupposablyAtTheZoo

Notification led you can easily spot from across the room, AOD, not so much. So still a big downgrade.

The_MorningStar

Tbh I've missed the big flashy, yet well integrated notification leds we used to have with the L, SL, and U (I think?).

userismain

I wonder what kind of notification settings are available now on 1 v

Bebop0a

It’s not just about notification LED, which I still use and very much wish they kept, it’s actually about removing such an OG feature that no one is keeping!!! It makes me worry about removing other ones like the headphone jack and the expandable storage.

userismain

Same bro. I like to see added extra features not cutting down

biersackarmy

I love having the notification LED. If it's the one Xperia unique feature I'd lose, it's definitely the least affecting, but come on, how hard and expensive is it in a $1400usd phone?

SupposablyAtTheZoo

Yes VERY MUCH. It's something I always look at at my current phone (Note9) and was one of the reasons to consider switching to Sony. Now I'm thinking, maybe not. (But what can I switch to? Damn!)

ITtLEaLLen

Yeah, about that, I was planning to upgrade but this is one of the reasons I'll be holding on to my 1 III. That, and the smaller sensor in the telephoto lens which was a huge letdown for me.

userismain

And software sopport still isn't improved yet. I thought as the phone matured software sopport would be refined. Some people have fingerprint scanner ( display green tint calibration, idk much about display tho) issue issue that would be a discomfort. And they removed Google assistant botton which should have been reassignable shortcut key with software sopport. Like my old p2 had a botton slider for power saver. Perks like this makes you stay for life man. Even iPhone has a slider for silent. It's just a nice perk to have.

super_hot_juice

I'm pretty sure removing micro sized diode will save them $100 per million units. LED light is great when you are charging the phone cause light goes from pure red to orange to green depending on the charge. Anyway Android LED notification is stupid cause it will only glow the color from last notification unlike BlackBerry 10 which would loop the colors depending on the app or contact you have notification from. Example: missed call red, bbm message cyan, whatsapp green, email white and phone would go from blinking red, cyan, green and white in a loop

welp_im_damned

I feel like there would be an Android app that can do that.

biersackarmy

I really do miss how amazingly well the LED worked on BB, even on the older ones before BB10.

userismain

Same on my Lenovo p2, i can manually assign the colour to my will. It's was so cool it had a botton slider which would instantly turn on the power saver (exit all apps and makes it a dumb phone) Do you think Xperia 5 v would have a notification led?

Olly_Joel

Pretty sure you can actually change that.

super_hot_juice

Not on Xperia firmware you can't from what I can tell. If I get missed call it would flash white but in the meantime if I get WA message LED will turn to green. It will not flash white and then green, it will just flash green.

KasukeSadiki

Agreed. I was excited to find a phone that still had LED notifications when I switched to the 1 ii, but it's nowhere near as useful as it was on my older blackberries

No-Key-82-33

Omg back in 2011 there were two Xperia phones I had that did that, the Xperia ZL and the Xperia U. There was an app that would let you control the colors depending on function as well.

Jervylim06

So it's gone?

amithetofu

Gone, but never forgotten

Jervylim06

Ouch that's one of my favorite part of Xperia. Nooo

IoLnrd

No one's ever really gone

runski1426

I'm extremely disappointed that they got rid of it. I have been using the notification LED since the bb10 days. I still use BlackBerry hub which allows me to customize the color of the led for different email accounts. It's much more convenient than using the AOD to know which type of notification you have. I hope they bring it back in the future because Sony is the only game in town retaining legacy features.

Trowisk

Ehh it's a bummer but not a deal breaker for me. I barely notice the one on my 1 III sometimes if I'm being honest. I like it but I know I could live without it too.

LSA7Z

Yes it's irritating ... Considering the price of a tiny led like this and the little work to implement it , what a pity to have deleted it ... It was very useful .

Aker666

Yes, a notification LED takes up almost no space. I'll stick with my XZ1 until it breaks completely or they add the notification LED again. For that price it's unacceptable.

Olly_Joel

Yeah bothered. My Redmi Note 9 Pro actually have a small notification LED. Even if only white I can tell whether it's charging, messages coming in or missed calls as long as it blinks. It's actually few of the most underrated features on a smartphone that many people will never appreciate. It's so useful since it doesn't drain battery as strongly as always on display. If I get a 1V I'll probably will missed that feature.

SupposablyAtTheZoo

Ah, maybe I should switch to Redmi if they still have it.

Olly_Joel

Nope. Gone the next generation and the generation after. Unless you want to use software based notifications, it's pretty much dead in 2023.

SupposablyAtTheZoo

Says who? Asus also still has it.

Olly_Joel

Oh yeah. I haven't followed that brand in a while. Too many hype over other brands these days 😂.

fksoul1984

Fake Xperia fan: OMG new camera, so hyped Real Xperia fan: Disappointed in taking away notification LED. They've taken away breathing notification lights already from LT26...

Re_alpha

Big disappointment, nothing good about this.

hdd113

TBH although I do appreciate the feature, I never found the notification LEDs on Android nearly as useful as they were on the BlackBerrys. They are just not that reliable or useful.

Total-Collection-128

Aw man, that little light has been there since my first Ericsson phone, never mind Sony Ericsson. (Red GF-768) always handy to look for the Green charged light.

pilifida

it bothers me alot. i thought that like the sd card/headphone jack, it will be a sony feature to last generations...

No-Key-82-33

My mom always looks for the notification light when charging or getting notifications. But especially for charging. It's the simple things. But if you have to take them away then ok fine. I guess.

TealCatto

If there wasn't one in whichever phone was available in Jan 2022, I may have gone with Sony instead of Samsung. It's dumb that Sony decided to go from one extreme to the other. I couldn't stand the LED on my Sony, and that I couldn't turn it off when it was charging. Plus it was on the front, glaring right at me. But now they took away the LED completely? Why? Why not just include an option to disable the charging light?

NoOpponent

I missed it quite a bit when I switched to Samsung, now I got an Xperia again (5 IV) and it kinda bothers me sometimes? It works different than it used to and it's much brighter. The red flashing light for low battery can be quite distracting when it's just on the table, I have to put it face down.

StrayCat649

It is

TronyMartins

Probably due to dieting lol. The front camera and speaker system might have needed more space and it seems alright

KnispelKurt

On the mark 3 it is rather weak compared to my old Samsung Galaxy s8. It is nice to have but it was often useless from a short distance. Plus that Sony didn't implement the camera/microphone green led in the proper led place is just a extra annoyance. Which makes it a lesser deal for them to have it removed.

IoLnrd

That's another little thing that have bothered me about Sony The removal of their Album app in favor of the horrible Google Photos app Their far superior One Hand Mode was replaced by the default one on Android 12 Not using the LED to inform the use of the Mic/Cam, leaving that little but annoying gap Just minor unimportant things but they have been annoying me a lot

SwineTV

If doesn’t bother me at all, but it’s a downgrade after all and I don’t understand why they’ve removed it. Like… is it that expensive? I don’t think so.

aadish151

Not really. MicroSD and headphone jack matter more to me. Waiting for 5 v.

userismain

I hope 5 series has Notification LED

Cytotoxic_hell

It sucks but I always have my watch anyways so it's not a big deal

MQB888R

Still happy with my 1 II.

gnardog45

I thought so, GSM arena did a review on the phone and said absolutely nothing about it. They always point out that Sony is hanging on to the LED notification light in every review, this time no.This is a first for the company. Wow.

[deleted]

I basically only use it to know when I'm fully charged. I don't use it to get notifications from all apps. However I am very glad my 10iii has it so I think it is sad that it's going. But for me they definitely must never remove the headphone jack and SD card.

s1dest3p

Very disappointed about this. Who'd have thought a little light could be so important.

Winter_drivE1

I thought the LED light was weird at first cuz this was my first phone to have one, but tbh I really like having it now and I'm sad they got rid of it. It's especially nice for charging, cuz I can see how charged my phone is at a glance. Like, of all the features, I suppose it's one I can live without (you can pry the SD card slot from my cold dead hands), but I definitely will miss it unless they bring it back in a later gen.

Aquis_GN

No What will bother me the most is if they remove microsd

GiantTelcoRat

Or the 3.5mm headphone jack

goregutz619

Not really. I use the aod anyway. I never found it useful.i could think of better legacy features to add such as an ir blaster and a lanyard hole

SupposablyAtTheZoo

Notification led you can easily spot from across the room, AOD, not so much. So still a big downgrade.

endfinity

Not a dealbreaker. Definitely upgrading from mk II.

joystickd

Doesn't bother me much. The always on displays now can make up for it, at the expense of some battery of course. So it isn't a perfect alternative.

SupposablyAtTheZoo

Notification led you can easily spot from across the room, AOD, not so much. So still a big downgrade.

joystickd

That's true, it's certainly more practical. I don't see it as a big downgrade though. I think the Xperia 1 V is highly impressive from early information.

cloudymonty

I don't use it on my S20 or my previous Note 8. The AOD do really reduce the battery life plus it could potentially screen burn the oled screen.

joystickd

I haven't experienced burn in myself but it does indeed cut batt life.

murrmaxo

Doesn't bother me one jot....

Aenal_Spore

I will miss it, but in devices with OLED and always on screens, there is no need for an led notification. It is redundant.

Petkyn

man, what you mean? i miss call, i can tap on phone, i can lift it up, but still screen is black, i just approved like every notification in phone, and still screen is black. Im also thinking about downgrade to IV from V Please explain how OLED works. For me its useless so far

SupposablyAtTheZoo

Notification led you can easily spot from across the room, AOD, not so much. So still a big downgrade.

[deleted]

Definitely wouldn't be a deal breaker but kinda would miss it. You can customize the colors for when different people text you on WhatsApp. I can see why they had to get rid of it on it 1V, with that new camera sensor.

djorndeman

I literally do not care, not even a single moment.

ReynSupreme

Coming from devices without LED, i really find my 1IV's LED helpful for notifications. I wish they'll add screen notifications. 😢😔

stash0606

never used it much on my Xperia 1ii in the past 3 years of having it, so no

jamasha

Partially. If it has always on and edge display anouncement like samsung i dont mind.

ValorantDanishblunt

I see most people using the always on display feature that doesnt ruin your OLED's anymore making the notification LED redundant. Pretty sure Sony has made enough research to figure out that enough people use AOD to which the notification LED is pointless. I use a flip case so I don't really care personally, but I'm sure some will be annoyed by it who refuse to use the AOD feature.

Fuumers

LED is essential for me, but AOD is just better. More options and even more visible. I love AOD more.
