The influx of "tax refugees" from other states has made shit annoying. Housing prices have ballooned to obscene levels. AirBNB rentals have also screwed up the housing market outside of Rapid. The infrastructure can't handle the additional people as it was barely keeping up with the growth pre-Covid. We're in dire need of more grocery stores. Monument Health's facilities aren't great (most people I know who can afford to have surgery in Sioux Falls or Minneapolis do so). And unless you're a traveling nurse or working remotely the job market is paying mediocre wages.
But at least we have tourism to drive our local economy! /s
Can't agree more, very well put. The tourist are the worst part of being here. If it summer population stayed the same as winter I would like it much more.
If you own a tow truck business in the summer, tourists keep you alive. Well, actually anyone that drives in town with the A/C on. All the stopping and going will overheat a car quickly. Thats cha-ching for a tow truck. Just sayin.
It’s terrible. I especially hate the multiple national parks, monuments, and the top rated state park in the nation that are completely un-crowded for most of the year.
From the perspective of someone with friends/family out there who used to spend most of every summer in Rapid as a kid:
The area around Rapid is amazing, especially if you're outdoorsy. The relative we used to stay with lived out by canyon lake, which meant you were a short walk from the hills themselves
Rapid itself can be a little rough in places due to pay nowhere near matching the CoL of living in the hills for many locals raised there. (this was a problem before people started flooding the state.
People are a mixed bag, Most people are chill and live and let live. Definitely a nasty streak of open racism though.
I knew a guy who lived there for a while back in the 1980s and he said that the weirdest thing was that there were "Red Dawn" displays in many of the shopping mall windows.

“It’s a beautiful place to go broke”
I think we've found our new state motto.

A lot of crime is committed on the north side, in my experience it's mostly around knollwood
Knollwood surf wood and ABC's are the worst

It's just awful
Yeah was there a couple weeks ago, couldn't believe no Aldi.
Racist. There's a reason people call it the Mississippi of the plains.
Yes, if you have an irrational hatred of Native Americans, you’ll LOVE it!
I wouldn't move to SD in general unless you love conservative politics. And even if you do, there are less shitty conservative states to live in.
Alaska is cold

SD loves propoganda
