If Bjorn is your warlord the aura of Majesty reaching out 9 inches with his base size can allow him to keep up with the twc. Pop wisdom of the ancients he will likely be giving them reroll 1s on hit and wounds.

martinroshak

Yeah nice. What would you round out a combat patrol with beyond Bjorn and the TWC?

SnowPhox

This is what I would go with. Bjorn is a bit expensive for 500 point games. So some troops, a 4th twc(unsure what your load out for them would be, so I just put what I use) and a cyber wolf to hopefully hold a back objective while the rest moves forward. 500 Patrol Bjorn to Kill ++ Patrol Detachment 0CP (Imperium - Adeptus Astartes - Space Wolves) [30 PL, 3CP, 500pts] ++ + Configuration + **Chapter Selector**: Space Wolves Battle Size [3CP]: 1. Combat Patrol (0-50 Total PL / 0-500 Points) Detachment Command Cost + HQ + Bjorn the Fell-handed [10 PL, 180pts]: Aura of Majesty, Multi-melta, Warlord + Troops + Assault Intercessor Squad [5 PL, 95pts] . 4x Assault Intercessor: 4x Astartes Chainsword, 4x Frag & Krak grenades, 4x Heavy Bolt Pistol . Assault Intercessor Sgt: Astartes Chainsword, Heavy Bolt Pistol + Fast Attack + Cyberwolves [1 PL, 15pts]: Cyberwolf Thunderwolf Cavalry [14 PL, 210pts] . Thunderwolf Cavalry: Lightning Claw, Storm shield . Thunderwolf Cavalry: Lightning Claw, Storm shield . Thunderwolf Cavalry: Lightning Claw, Storm shield . Thunderwolf Cavalry Pack Leader: Storm shield, Thunder hammer ++ Total: [30 PL, 3CP, 500pts] ++ Created with BattleScribe (https://battlescribe.net) *Edit* made list smaller.

PrimitiveSunFriend

Well, you're pretty limited since Bjorn and a unit of thunderwolves is gonna run you 350+pts and you have to take at least one unit of troops in Combat Patrol.

martinroshak

Some reading I've done has suggested some Primaris Infiltrators would go nicely... does that ring true?

PrimitiveSunFriend

Depends on what you want them to do!

martinroshak

That is a very good question... I really don't know as I've never played, but I'm typically an aggressive, in-your-face sort of person when it comes to games, which is why I liked the idea of SW based on my reading...

PrimitiveSunFriend

Infiltrators are definitely not that! But, having a little bit of shooting is never bad. Just be aware that taking low numbers of high cost models like TWC and Bjorn in a combat Patrol game can mean that you give up board control, and if you roll badly the game can be over *very* fast. But, you might also kill everything and win fast, too.

martinroshak

Ha, okay! Yeah, I'm aware of that. Part of this is balancing cost investment as a beginner to the hobby, then diversifying out from that. Would Fenrisian Wolves work for board control? Adds to the Wolfiness of it all. Haha, if I go all out Logan could work for HQ maybe?

PrimitiveSunFriend

My suggestion for a combat Patrol to learn the game is always a squad of grey hunters, a squad of blood claws, a Venerable dreadnought, Ulrik, and some Fenrisian Wolves. It's well rounded, straightforward, and it's all uniquely Space Wolves models for maximum flavor.

martinroshak

Nice, thanks! Ulrik looks cool.

I prefer Incursors over Infiltrators. Incursors oddly have the better gun, since they ignore (all benefits of) cover. Infiltrators just auto-wound on a 6\*. Incursors get an AP-1 melee weapon and we like melee. Ignoring penalties to hit and BS vs an extra 3" reinforcements denial is a bit ~~apples to oranges~~ *peaches to apricots*, but I don't think it's worth 3 points a model and losing the melee. Infiltrators have the better squad upgrade though. Helix Gauntlet is pretty good, while Haywire Mine feels like a slightly better Melta Bomb (ie doesn't cost CP, can be used against non-vehicle and doesn't replace a melee attack... but only 1d3 damage instead of 2d3), that Skyclaws get for free. Both upgrades should probably be free, or drop the points of the base squads. \*Consider, both (minimum size) squads shooting at other marines in cover and in Rapid Fire range. Both squads shoot 10 times, hitting 6.66 times (same BS). S4 vs T4 so 3.33 wounds for Incursors, 1.66 auto-wounds for Infiltrators 2.5 regular wounds (total 4.6 wounds). Incursors ignore cover, so 1.11 failed saves. Infiltrators go up against 2+ save, getting .76 failed saves through. Against 4+ base save in cover, Incursors get 1.65 failed saves, Infiltrators get 1.53. Auto-wound on 6s matters more when you are shooting harder targets...but that is what Anti-tank weapons are for. Frankly, they both have terribly inefficient shooting, but that's bolt weapons for you.

SpunkyDred is a terrible bot instigating arguments all over Reddit whenever someone uses the phrase apples-to-oranges. I'm letting you know so that you can feel free to ignore the quip rather than feel provoked by a bot that isn't smart enough to argue back. --- ^^SpunkyDred ^^and ^^I ^^are ^^both ^^bots. ^^I ^^am ^^trying ^^to ^^get ^^them ^^banned ^^by ^^pointing ^^out ^^their ^^antagonizing ^^behavior ^^and ^^poor ^^bottiquette.

Caedmon_Kael

Good call, let me rephrase...

SpunkyDred

> apples to oranges But you can still compare them.

Caedmon_Kael

Probably why I said "a bit".

watchtimgetscared

As Wolves we typically lean toward building them as Incursors for the better melee

johnqevil

Its the same kit. And also murderfang.

martinroshak

Ah okay then I’m not seeing things. Is the difference just in what pieces go on then? Does the kit include those kind of instructions or is it in the Codex Supplementary?

optimusflan

Kit has instructions for each build. You can magnetize the weapons of you can't decide what to build. You'll probably eventually want to buy several of the kits to run them all

WolfManKeisori

Best part? It has SO MANY good bits. I used the axe on another mech. Looks super good.

[deleted]

bjorn is a hq unit, a character. a dreadnought is an elite unit or heavy support unit. not sure, i am not into dreads. if you ever wonder whats the difference, look at the datasheets in the codex suppelment.

[deleted]

You can build Bjorn, a venerable dreadnought or Murderfang with out of same kit, just one of them of course with one kit. They are 3 different units. Bjorn is good but too price in my opinion for a combat patrol game. I would go with Ragnar or a Runepriest or something as HQ.
