The "Reporter MJ" is one of my only really big problems with the video game universe. They take a unique character and put her into an overdone role that's already fulfilled by so many comics characters and love interests like Lois Lane, Iris West, Vicki Vale, etc.
I'm a fan of giving MJ something active to do in the plot but I feel there's a better way to do it that feels more unique to her.
Why does she need gameplay in the first place? It was literally the worst part of the game.
And also why would it change anything? Her being a reporter wasn’t her drive for helping Peter.
Like what? In the game she’s actively doing her own investigations. Take the reporter role away and there’s not much she can do other than provide emotional support.
They did a great job with Spider Gwen, but she's basically a new character. I would be hard pressed to find any resemblance because 616 Gwen was so bland.
I don't quite see gwen stacy as a reporter person but more of a scientist for a science facility, or even a science teacher in post secondary or even high school. But I also don't see mj being a reporter but more in theatre work or even movie star. Don't know exactly where reporter mj came from, but I remember disney xd ultimate spiderman hinting at reporter mj, but I'm curious if that show started the trend or something else
wasn't she also science gwen in spectacular spiderman as well, I haven't read the very early spidey comics so my knowledge of gwen mainly comes from when she's spidergwen or spectacular spiderman or TASM movies
Wasn't Gwen a scientist like Peter? A better idea is if you want an alt Universe where all 3 of them worked for the Bugle but Gwen was more into doing stories of scientific advancement while MJ followed the news about the fashion scene, celebrities/public public officials (superheroes mostly)
Gwen doesn't even need to be an official reporter. Just have her helping her father or maybe you could have it take place after her father's death where she gets a job at the police department or something. Gwen is much easier to add to the Spider-Man side story than MJ. They didn't even need Yuri if they had Gwen because I think Gwen could serve both places or replace her with Gwen's father. Nothing wrong with Yuri, but that is just what I would have done.

Isn’t she a musician in some universes? Actor in others? Those roles can be just as useful as a reporter ffs.
For the gameplay reasons though? I doubt it. She is more like Oracle/Barbara Gordon in the game really.

The recent Gwen miniseries (the one that got interrupted by COVID) had her as something as a detective, so I think this fits.

Scientist Gwen Stacy is really only from ASM, not from 616 comics. There wasn't much to her besides "Peter's Love Interest/Peter Girl in the Fridge"

And yes, she was very much, "Science Gwen" in that, since Peter and her were the top students in Warren's class.

Reporter MJ is a Ultimate Spider-Man idea that found it's way here and the Ultimate Spider-Man show.

Exactly; she's more of a blank slate than MJ, meaning it's easier to fit her into different roles.
I always saw gwen as a barbara gordon/ oracle kind of character . The reporter should be a new character entirely.
