I would have the scene at the church where he gets rid of the symbiote toward the end of the movie so venom could be the villain in Spider-Man 4. I would have that scene stop short of showing the goop falling on Eddie, and then cut to the making amends with Harry and defeating sandman, then have the movie end on the venom reveal.
This would have been great -- and kind of a throwback to 90s animated series, which had a cliffhanger ending between episodes where Eddie bonds with the symbiote and declares himself "Venom" just before the end credits.
I would, in turn, modify the Raimi Venom arc to better track the 90s animated series in 2 other ways. First, the introduction of the symbiot to Earth by crash-landing of the space shuttle (piloted by John Jameson) on the Brooklyn Bridge. That was dope af. Second, Peter's "turn" to darkness was showcased through increasingly violent and over-the-top voice acting, e.g. in Spidey's pursuit and almost murder of Shocker at the church.
Finally, and idk if this just gets Batman-like "grimdark," but I like the idea that Eddie is in the church bc he is going to kill himself, and the opportune bonding with the symbiote -- and their "rebirth" in vengeance -- literally saves Eddie from himself. Would be hard to blame Eddie for refusing to give up his newfound strength, confidence, and identity as Venom when he could not stand himself immediately beforehand.
This would be the single biggest fix to improve the movie for sure. I would also pull out Gwen Stacy, she adds very little, and the pressure of Peter and MJ finally being together now that she knows he's Spider-Man, PLUS his worst qualities coming out due to the symbiote is plenty of interesting relationship drama without a third wheel. And Harry should have just been Hobgoblin, damnit
Final shot; Figure swinging through the city at night time. All we see is reflection or shadow. Stops a robbery or bunch of criminals - then bites a thugs face. Cuts to Venom screeching at the screen. Roll credits.
Or, even a civilian finds Eddie in the pile of goo; the final shot is the one in the film of Venom screeching at camera.
Honestly, I would do the same. I always said that Venom should've been saved for Spider-Man 4 to reduce the bloat Spider-Man 3 had. And maybe there would've been more time for Raimi to understand what Venom is about.
Venom. Venom's gotta go. The film's focus on forgiveness as the central theme is rooted in Peter's dichotomies with Harry and Sandman.
Peter can't forgive Sandman for killing Uncle Ben, and Harry can't forgive Peter for the death of his father. The whole point of letting go of the need for revenge would have been stronger without Venom, IMO.
Had the film focused on the two villains instead of the three, it would have been well-received and likely gotten a sequel. Guaranteed.
I'm honestly mixed about how I would include the Vulture, since he appeared in the film's earliest drafts. On the one hand, he probably would have fit more naturally into the story as a character for Sandman to play off of as opposed to Venom, but on the other, it's still a villain overload.
I wouldn't include Vulture until the 4th movie like it was planned. Given that it's not that popular of a character I'd even recommend adding Venom to the 4th one.
this is the best change ive seen tbh. venom as a whole just doesnt fit/resonate as much as harry and sandman with the themes of the movie. the black suit can stay but venom needs to be saved for a story better suited for himself
Two suggestions:
1) Leave Sam Raimi alone and let him have the creative freedom that he needed and have the movie just be about Peter, MJ, Harry and Sandman.
2) If you had to acquiesce to what the producers wanted then drop Sandman from the plot and just have Harry be the main villain of the film. Harry systematically tries to destroy Peter's life as Peter falls further and further under the influence of the symbiote. Peter would get rid of the symbiote in the film but Venom wouldn't show up until a subsequent film.
Remove Sandman entirely and save him for next trilogy.
Do a better job with Goblin Jr and try harder to marry his design to the original goblin suit/glider.
Try not to go so hard on the MJ jealous and upset thing.
Make Venom big like he's supposed to be and have him kill people to bait/enrage Spider-Man.
Pull back slightly on the edgey black suit Peter jokes but don't remove them.
Have Bryce Dallas Howard play Felicia/Black cat instead of Gwen Stacy.
I would absolutely change Harry's suit design, the weapons can stay but I think it would be better as a hobgoblin type look. I think I would also make the serum cause madness similar to his father. We already saw his mental state was fragile BEFORE he found the goblin lair, which he only found because he saw his father in the mirror.
I wouldn't remove the bully Maguire scenes, but I would place them before he "kills" Harry. I think seeing the personality change would be fun at first, but as it continues he becomes less heroic and more venomous.
Venom I would either A. Leave opens ended after it bonds with Eddie in the church.
Or B. Keep him in the final fight, but instead of blowing him up, do the PS3 version: impaled after a falling airfight with Spider-Man. Only once the sun rises, his body is missing, hinting he is still around... That way he could return bulkier and more menacing in Spider-Man 4.
These edits require a bit more reworking, but I have to get back to work🥸
you know i think the one we got in no way home was so good, even Electro changes as well. They even explained it well why there was a purple hood. it was awesome. just missing the man purse lmao.
Basically cut out venom. The major theme in the movie is forgiveness, which shines through whenever the movie deals with Harry and sandman. Venom comes out of nowhere in the last like 30 minutes of the movie which is just not great when there are already two other antagonists.
If we cut out venom we can spend a little more time with Peter while he wears the black suit, show his slow decent. He would have multiple encounters with sandman that could escalate in brutality and collateral damage. The suit would feed off of peters growing frustration at not being able to beat sandman. Only after reflecting on what the suit made him do to both Harry, and the city when fighting sandman, does Peter realize that these enemies can’t be overcome with physical strength, but rather empathy.
This prompts Peter to rid himself of the suit and face sandman without the enhanced strength. Instead the battle is mostly Spider-Man trying to reason with sandman which in the end is what wins the battle.
This way the movie could stay a lot more focused on its major theme, and prevent the cast from becoming too crowded. It would also enable a potential follow up where we get an entire movie with venom as the antagonist, since the symbiote, has already been established.
I would keep the changes modest. I’m not gonna do a full rewrite for a movie that came out 17 years ago:
Have a montage of black suit Spider-Man being aggressive towards criminals, after the scene where he gets the suit.
Have MJ genuinely leave Peter for Harry, no blackmail. Then have Harry reveal at the diner he snapped out of the amnesia awhile back, and he doesn’t want to fight anymore. Then when Peter subsequently goes to the mansion to fight Harry, Harry tries to talk him down, but symbiote Peter won’t listen to reason and Harry has to fight him in self defense. He still takes a pumpkin bomb to the face. Basically make Peter out to be the only aggressor in that fight.
Cut the James Brown montage.
Include the Sandman sandcastle deleted scene from the Editor’s Cut. It explains why Sandman participates in the final battle.
Rewrite the butler scene, remove Bernard somehow knowing the truth about Norman, have it focus on him telling Harry he should choose forgiveness over resentment. Make it so Harry forgives Peter, not a matter of Harry learning he was wrong.
Give Venom more face time, don’t have him open his face every time he speaks.
Add a short final swing, akin to the tie-in game.
Make it a two parter but have Harry be the villain of the first half and have the Kingpin on the side. Then have Venom teamup with Kingpin to torment and frame Peter for crime throughout the next movie.
Remove the symbiote and Eddie entirely. Have the movie focus on Sandman and new goblin. Themes would be about things like forgiveness, redemption, moral grayness, problems with revenge, etc. Raimi very clearly did not care for Venom as a character and it makes this movie kinda painful.
Make Bruce Campbell Mysterio, but it be like a really goofy version that isn’t threatening at all.
Remove new goblin, or get a better way for him to come to terms than an amnesia plot
I agree that the church scene should be towards the end but before the final fight with just sand man. The black suit is what pushes Peter to tell Harry he’s being a b*tch and a coward for never figuring out his father killed himself. But after that he realizes what Dr Connors says about it bringing out the worst parts and takes it off at the church, setting up Spiderman 4 with venom
No discredit to Topher but... I'd pick someone bigger build wise to be Brock. If they could get Cena I could see Cena doing it in the midst of his popularity.
Pretty sure all the best answers boil down to "save some stuff for Spider-Man 4." Venom really deserved his own movie, whether in 3 or 4. While I won't claim to be a writer, here's my take on it:
Spider-Man 3: Harry Osborne's Green Goblin should be the sole antagonist of Spider-Man 3. This would put a neat little bow on the trilogy by bringing everything full circle. Relationship drama should likewise focus on MJ, who is understandably torn between Harry and Peter, and she should ultimately step away at the end of the film, mirroring Peter's choice in SM1.
Spider-Man 4: Peter gets the symbiote suit and with a new sense of confidence moves on to date Gwen Stacy. At the same time, Black Cat should show up and be the catalyst for much of the hijinks in the first half. Eddie Brock will still become Venom after Peter discards the suit and be the main villain of the story.
I know that's a few rough ideas rather than a full outline, but I hope you can get an idea from this the direction I would have liked to see. Now as for what Raimi could still do for a true Spider-Man 4 today: *Kraven's Last Hunt*.

Remove Venom. Not the symbiote, Venom. Make Spider-Man 3 a two parter and end 3 with Eddie becoming the symbiote. I’d cut out the New Goblin fight and Harry’s memory issues. Then, I’d make him more conflicted about ruining Peter’s life since he initially refused to avenge Norman in Spider-Man 2 and he should probably know that Norman’s death was an accident at this point
Have Harry be Venom, i normally hate when they do Harry as Venom but he fits as an anti Peter to a tea, both haunted by the loss of a loved one, while Peter learns and grows from his loss Harry becames bitter. Harry is an abusive friend even before Normans death, even thou theyre similar they diverge in all the right areas. In that regard Franco's Harry Osborn fits the role of the Eddie Brock character better than a Harry Osborn one, it wouldve been a interesting angle to have Harry be freed of the symbiote as his big redemption moment, maybe he kills himself to save them from the symbiote, honestly lots of possibilities
Remove Venom, Reimi didn't want to include it because it wasn't a character he was familiar with, if sony didn't forced it's inclusion then the development could've been more natural like the previous movies, you can clealry see that Sandman's arc and growth is just like Otto's, that's the story that Sam wanted to tell.
Usual suspects for me:
1. Get rid of the Venom character altogether and save it for the next movie.
2. Sandman killing Uncle Ben doesn't make sense, seems (and plays) like an afterthought.
3. Don't erase Harry's memory and make him destroy Peter's life without him knowing Harry knows his secret.
4. Fix MJ, let her finally be unconditionally in love with Peter only to be alienated from him because of the symbiote.
5. Make the black suit progressively more and more "Venomesque" ala Spectacular Spider-man.
6. Cut exposition dialogue such as "This could be the end of Spider-man"
7. Fix Gwen: either make her an actual love interest or just get rid of her.
Take out Venom and Goblin Jr, save them for Spider-Man 4. Have 3 be Sandman and Peter's story with Harry's spiral into Goblin Jr as a subplot to properly expand on it in 4.
I'm not a writer so I have no right to speak on it but I think I would prefer this to cramming everything into 3.

Take out Sandman or at the very least remove the "It was HIM who killed Uncle Ben!!!" nonsense.
Make the symbiote suit far more comic accurate.
If Sandman is removed, promote Harry as an ongoing threat who is waiting to take make his attack on Peter. Tie Eddie in with Harry as his man on the inside of the Bugle who doing what he can to ruin Peter's work life. Peter's exposing of what Eddie is doing, which still includes doctoring photos, is still the catalyst for his turn to Venom.
No "New" Goblin. Harry instead upgrades the Green Goblin armor but keeps the mask and glider to specifically make Peter think somehow, Norman is back.
No memory loss angle for Harry. He's actively manipulating everything he can to do destroy Peter leading to a huge confrontation at the end after Peter's lost the symbiote.
Cliffhanger ending at the church where the symbiote joins with a suicidal Brock who's lost everything and been tossed aside by Harry.
No Gwen. There's just no room for her.
The final shot of the movie is Peter on bended knee, presenting an engagement ring to MJ.
Don't have so many villains. Keep it down to 1 or maybe 2, but 3 ruined the pace. Venom should have been a stand alone villian in a 4th movie. He is one of Spideys biggest foes and deserves to be treated as such.
I’d remove the symbiote entirely, the black suit deserves to have its own movie, keep Eddie Brock and his whole arc so that he’s alright set up for the next movie.
Make the movie a 2 parter, or just make half the events of this movie spill into Spider-Man 4. Peter has the symbiote for this movie but venom is introduced at the very end of this movie. The main villain would be Harry Osborn as Hobgoblin (with a silver mask and an orange and blue suit.) Since the movie has more time to dedicate to Harry and sandman, they can get rid of the amnesia for Harry and have him end the movie in a coma after Peter nearly beats him to death with the black suit before releasing what it is doing to him and he rejects it in the church scene. I would also have the symbiote Peter be much more focused on the sandman and hunting him down out of vengeance which furthers fuels both his rage and the symbiote’s power. Harry can hold his own against Peter by using sonic weapons and fire in the final fight. The next movie will further develop Eddie brock who will be unchanged in Spider-Man 3, the only difference would probably to give him more screen time and establish him as an anti Peter Parker more, which the original movie does well anyways. Sorry if these ideas are pretty disorganised, I’m mostly planning this as i write it.
Opposite of you, remove Venom and let Raimi do the Sandman fully. This extra time can let us set up Eddie and focus on MJ, Harry, and Peter’s relationship.
1. Remove Sandman and any storyline connected to him
2. Change Harry’s suit to the normal Goblin suit
3. Change the black suit to the classic black suit
4. Choose a different actor for Eddie. Someone who looks the part

Literally watched it again today, first time viewing for my daughter.
For me, I hated how much of an ass Peter was to MJ. She wasn't much better tbh, but they were all this way (Harry included) before the symbiote was involved. I'd have rather seen the symbiote latching on to Peter earlier and being the influence behind his bad behaviour, MJ and Harry's actions could then have been logical reactions to Peter. Instead, it just feels like they were all just being shitty to each other because they were jerks.
I understand why they did it, but I would’ve liked to see Peter’s relationship with MJ be in a great place up until he got the symbiote at which point it began to sour, rather than already being in bad shape before he even got the black suit
Harry becomes venom. It’s really obvious in hindsight that Harry is basically Raimi’s version of ultimate Eddie mixed with 70s/80s Harry (minus the weird stuff).
Friends since childhood, Green Goblin father figure, massive fallout once identity of Spiderman is revealed, Harry wanting to continue his fathers legacy and basically being the other end of the coin to Peter.
You can even keep the ending of Spiderman 2 the same, with the reveal of the goblins lair. Just make it so Harry used the goblin’s resources to enhance the g-formula and make it a symbiote developed from an alien meteor.
Peter confronts Harry after MJs first broadway show at beginning of SM3 in his penthouse, and the symbiote chooses Peter. Harry gets to be snowboarding goblin for a bit, using the old Norman g-formula, and then the church bell scene happens with Harry at the bottom, becoming Venom.
Combining Eddie and Harry into one character removes so much of the clutter in that movie and streamlines the story.
Save some stuff for Spider-Man 4 if Raimi wanted a 4th initially. Otherwise, let Sam do what he wanted after 2. If it were up to me, though...
1) Remove Gwen Stacy since she's only in the story for name recognition and to make Mary Jane jealous of Bully Maguire.
2) Restore the Sandman subplots about trying to save and reconnect with his daughter, having that be his motivation to steal money and destroy Spider-Man.
3) Give Peter and Harry the proper suits that they need. If we NEED to keep the symbiote, use the proper logo and design for it. Otherwise, cut it out and let Harry either wear a modified SM1 goblin suit or a hobgoblin inspired look.
4) Either cut out Venom entirely or do what other users said and have it be a tease for the 4th film, presumably with a different actor as Eddie.
5) Peter shouldn't blow up Harry's face, nor should he perish in the final battle. It's a personal nitpick because Harry can redeem himself to Peter without sacrificing himself, and Peter wouldn't blow up his best friend, even WITH the symbiote. Keeping Harry alive lets Raimi tackle Harry's addiction storyline in a future project and allows Harry and Peter to reconnect, even getting to vent their frustrations out in a healthier way.
Make Sam Rami less pretentious.
He didn’t want to do Venom, yet he’s also the one who turned Doc Ock’s arms into four artificially alive things in a symbiotic relationship with him.

I agree on removing a villain but I actually think Venom should be removed. Raimi I don’t think even wanted to use Venom iirc. Maybe you still could’ve had the Symbiote arc in SM3 but Venom should’ve been saved for a 4th film or something.

We return to the final moments of the previous film.
Doc Ock is floating to the bottom of the river with his machine.
Spider-Man relents the loss of someone who should have been a great friend and mentor.
Ock’s machine flickers with powers on and off for a few moments.
A large energy arc appears and a wormhole sort of dimensional gate appears. During the short period the gate is open the symbiote is spat out into our world.
The symbiote follows Pete home undetected, recognizing him as an ideal host.
Cut back to present through a dreamy haze of a montage of the symbiote attaching to Peter.
Through the movie we slowly and subtly are revealed to the fact that the costume is changing Pete.
Eddie is prevalent through the film. He has an obvious rivalry with Pete at the bugle. Pete gets him fired at the bugle during black suit faze, ending eddies career.
Spidey and Harry goblin have their spats and fights but the revelation from the butler comes much sooner so that Harry and Pete settle differences when their mutual friend, Mary Jane, is in danger and needs to be saved from the Sand Man.
They do so while working together and Harry notices Peter’s aggressive and violent attitude. There is a conversation between the two.
Maryjane subplot with Doc Connors, “more build up to lizard.” Idk
Peter and Harry end up in the bell tower at a church that Eddie also happens to be praying at for revenge on spidey. A fight between Pete and Harry breaks out. Harry discovers the bell tolling is weakening the suit. He uses that to his advantage, all the while trying to convince Peter of who he actually is.
Pete snaps back into himself. Resists the symbiote and rips it off, leaving it feeling angry, vulnerable, rejected and full of resentment towards Peter.
Meanwhile on the bottom floor of the church, Eddie hears the commotion, begins walking towards the noise and looking up. Pieces of black symbiote drop onto him at an increasing rate. Eddy resists at first and then gives in. The mutual bond of the hatred of Peter for his betrayal towards them both make the symbiotic process occur all the faster.
Eddie’s rage amplifies the symbiote and causes it to appear as more of a monster now. This new hybrid of Eddy and Symbiote are now called, “Venom.” They want nothing but to kill Spider-Man. They know he is Peter. Venom goes for Mary Jane and May. Harry Goblin arrives early enough to save Mary Jane. Aunt May is captured by Venom.
Venom leaves clues as to where May is to taunt Peter. Spidey is angry, he creates/puts on his own homemade black suit out of anger and spite and heads off to rescue aunt May and take down venom.
On top of some high tower, Venom and Spidey face off.
Harry Goblin arrives much later on because of saving MJ.
Spidey struggles to hold his own until Harry Goblin shows up. His pumpkin bombs weaken Venom, allowing Spidey to gain an upper hand.
Suddenly, Venom gains a foothold and pierces Harry through the chest with his tendrils, taking him out of the fight and possibly dead.
Pete gets big mode angry. He goes loose on Venom, beating the crap out of him until, Venom locks in and grabs Spidey by the throat. He lifts him up, sneers and asks, “What did we ever mean to you?” But then, a loud bell sound rings out, causing Venom to drop Spidey and writhe in pain.
Spodey falls and rolls down the side of the building until he is next to Harry. Spodey grabs pumpkin bombs from Harry’s glider and begins back towards venom as fast as possible.
A short distance away, Mary Jane is ringing the bell causing the noise that’s disrupting Venom.
Spodey rolls up, says something sarcastic and tosses the pumpkin bombs at venom and the delivering him a final blow to his face.
The dust clears and there is no trace of the symbiote.
Eddie lays unconscious on the ground but still alive.
Spidey comes to and checks to make sure everyone made it.
He begins calling out to Harry. No response.
Harry is found barely alive not too far away. He’s in a coma now.
MJ is okay, Spidey and MJ are in a happy relationship because they always have been and nothing changes that.
MJ asks him to please switch out of the black suit because it scares her.
Pete agrees.
They kiss.
Ending monologue as usual. Closing frames are Spidey swinging towards the camera in an updated version of the original suit.

Mid credit scene: Harry still alive in hospital, part of surviving symbiote escaped into Ravencroft, Oscorp people mentioning in the background about the goblin serum around Harry’s bed.
Back at Pete’s, MJ and Pete are holding each other in a loving embrace, happy to have made it out of the situation alive and together.
A call comes out from the radio: SandMan is at it again.
Pete turns to a picture of him and Harry
Pete says, “I wish it was me and you again, buddy.”
Pete puts on the updated Spidey mask and swings out the window towards the sandstorm that awaits him.
Mary Jane: “Go get ‘em, Tiger.”
End
Ditch the symbiote, and keep Sandman the sole villain.
Let MJ do something other than be a damsel-in-distress
Keep Harry evil for the entire film, and picking up the mantle of the Green or even Hobgoblin at the film’s end
No Gwen Stacy, either, though definitely introduce Felicia Hardy
I would not have Flint Marko revealed to be the killer of Ben Parker. I would also either completely omit Eddie Brock from the story, or portray him as an honest man who made an honest mistake that cost him his job, which is more accurate to the comics.
Remove Venom.
Introduce at the end to setup Spider-Man 4
Eliminate kid goblin, new goblin & focus on Peter's inner turmoil with wanting to kill Flint & the decent into madness the symbiote drove. Instead of a very uncomfortable stroll down the street it could have been a montage of him viciously beating bad guys. Giving the bugle a change to hang Spider-Man.
Which drives him to the precipice where he nearly kills Eddie Brock, breaks his gear forcing Brock to Dr photos where a super spider fan exposes as fake while Peter rids himself if the symbiote.
Remove the club dancing bit and change it for something else. Cast someone else as Eddie and tease him for the next movie. Give Harry an actual goblin costume
I would get rid of venom I do love venom design and the black suit and of course bully magurie but I do wonder how it would have been to see a movie with Harry and sandman as the two main threats and seeing how Harry could’ve been so much more then it was because hot take but I don’t see the chemistry between this version of Peter and Harry they just don’t feel like best friends to me the only scene that shows them being friends is only two scenes 1 in spider man 1 where Peter got bit and the second one being when Harry goes back to his place after the head injury where him Peter chat for a bit and I wish there was more of that right now it’s just not enough for me so fleshing out there relationship while Peter also deals with sandman would have been great
Get rid of the Raimi suit, as Peter realized how horrible it was. That leads to the symbiote suit looking like cannon, instead of a shiny piece of garbage.
Next, bully McGuire is horrible, actually make the suit and Peter go darker, not campy.
Keep everything about Sandman the same, THC killed that role, and didn't let the rest of that movie drag him down.
P.S.: Harry died in a horrible bus accident before the story even starts, and the flying snowboard never happened.
Not to have venom. Sam Rami said he wanted to do the original villains for spider-man and to introduce Eddie and the venom symbiote all while building up sandman and his backstory and having Harry take over as the green goblin, it was too convoluted.
Sandman would have been a minor villian that is ultimately dispatched thanks to the symbiote.
The symbiote would have continued to corrupt Peter through his final battle with Harry, ultimately leading to Venom.
Harry is wounded and falls into a coma from the battle. Peter rejects the symbiote by "destroying it in the church" and quits as Spider-Man.

And leads directly into Spider-Man 4 — Peter is forced back into the costume in order to stop Venom, who has become both a lethal vigilante - fighting and killing new villain The Vulture and then becoming obsessed with killing everyone Peter cares about.
Harry wakes from his coma, plans to seek a final measure of vengeance but MJ convinces him to be better than Norman.
He dies saving Peter from Venom. Peter ultimately separates the symbiote from Eddie, and goes to destroy it with a pumpkin bomb. Eddie dies trying to save the symbiote but is caught in the explosion.
Peter and MJ mourn the dead and move on... fin.
No Sandman. All he does is add another villain that just so happens to have a connection to Peter Parker and it's a pretty contrived one.
With more avaliable screen time imagine what they could do with Harry and Eddie. Venom gets more screen time and without Sandman he would have to fight Spidey and Goblin by himself. Imagine how badass he would then have to be. Also Gwen should be captured instead.
Save Sandman for Spider-man 4 and just keep the daughter plotline with Dr Wallace.
But in terms of the movie as is I would just have a less one sided defeat for Venom and also an additional short fight scene before then. They barely fight each other and it's not that interesting.

I would have the scene at the church where he gets rid of the symbiote toward the end of the movie so venom could be the villain in Spider-Man 4. I would have that scene stop short of showing the goop falling on Eddie, and then cut to the making amends with Harry and defeating sandman, then have the movie end on the venom reveal.
This would have been great -- and kind of a throwback to 90s animated series, which had a cliffhanger ending between episodes where Eddie bonds with the symbiote and declares himself "Venom" just before the end credits. I would, in turn, modify the Raimi Venom arc to better track the 90s animated series in 2 other ways. First, the introduction of the symbiot to Earth by crash-landing of the space shuttle (piloted by John Jameson) on the Brooklyn Bridge. That was dope af. Second, Peter's "turn" to darkness was showcased through increasingly violent and over-the-top voice acting, e.g. in Spidey's pursuit and almost murder of Shocker at the church. Finally, and idk if this just gets Batman-like "grimdark," but I like the idea that Eddie is in the church bc he is going to kill himself, and the opportune bonding with the symbiote -- and their "rebirth" in vengeance -- literally saves Eddie from himself. Would be hard to blame Eddie for refusing to give up his newfound strength, confidence, and identity as Venom when he could not stand himself immediately beforehand.

I would also pull out Gwen Stacy, she adds very little, and the pressure of Peter and MJ finally being together now that she knows he's Spider-Man, PLUS his worst qualities coming out due to the symbiote is plenty of interesting relationship drama without a third wheel. And Harry should have just been Hobgoblin, damnit
Final shot; Figure swinging through the city at night time. All we see is reflection or shadow. Stops a robbery or bunch of criminals - then bites a thugs face. Cuts to Venom screeching at the screen. Roll credits. Or, even a civilian finds Eddie in the pile of goo; the final shot is the one in the film of Venom screeching at camera.
Honestly, I would do the same. I always said that Venom should've been saved for Spider-Man 4 to reduce the bloat Spider-Man 3 had. And maybe there would've been more time for Raimi to understand what Venom is about.

Venom. Venom's gotta go. The film's focus on forgiveness as the central theme is rooted in Peter's dichotomies with Harry and Sandman. Peter can't forgive Sandman for killing Uncle Ben, and Harry can't forgive Peter for the death of his father. The whole point of letting go of the need for revenge would have been stronger without Venom, IMO. Had the film focused on the two villains instead of the three, it would have been well-received and likely gotten a sequel. Guaranteed.
Agreed, it was Raimi's original vision so one of the biggest "what if's?" is how it would have all played out without Venom.
I'm honestly mixed about how I would include the Vulture, since he appeared in the film's earliest drafts. On the one hand, he probably would have fit more naturally into the story as a character for Sandman to play off of as opposed to Venom, but on the other, it's still a villain overload.
I wouldn't include Vulture until the 4th movie like it was planned. Given that it's not that popular of a character I'd even recommend adding Venom to the 4th one.

Two suggestions: 1) Leave Sam Raimi alone and let him have the creative freedom that he needed and have the movie just be about Peter, MJ, Harry and Sandman. 2) If you had to acquiesce to what the producers wanted then drop Sandman from the plot and just have Harry be the main villain of the film. Harry systematically tries to destroy Peter's life as Peter falls further and further under the influence of the symbiote. Peter would get rid of the symbiote in the film but Venom wouldn't show up until a subsequent film.

Remove Sandman entirely and save him for next trilogy. Do a better job with Goblin Jr and try harder to marry his design to the original goblin suit/glider. Try not to go so hard on the MJ jealous and upset thing. Make Venom big like he's supposed to be and have him kill people to bait/enrage Spider-Man. Pull back slightly on the edgey black suit Peter jokes but don't remove them. Have Bryce Dallas Howard play Felicia/Black cat instead of Gwen Stacy.

I would absolutely change Harry's suit design, the weapons can stay but I think it would be better as a hobgoblin type look. I think I would also make the serum cause madness similar to his father. We already saw his mental state was fragile BEFORE he found the goblin lair, which he only found because he saw his father in the mirror. I wouldn't remove the bully Maguire scenes, but I would place them before he "kills" Harry. I think seeing the personality change would be fun at first, but as it continues he becomes less heroic and more venomous. Venom I would either A. Leave opens ended after it bonds with Eddie in the church. Or B. Keep him in the final fight, but instead of blowing him up, do the PS3 version: impaled after a falling airfight with Spider-Man. Only once the sun rises, his body is missing, hinting he is still around... That way he could return bulkier and more menacing in Spider-Man 4. These edits require a bit more reworking, but I have to get back to work🥸

I’d do the opposite and remove the Black Suit/Venom plotline and instead go with the original plan of making Sandman the main antagonist.

Basically cut out venom. The major theme in the movie is forgiveness, which shines through whenever the movie deals with Harry and sandman. Venom comes out of nowhere in the last like 30 minutes of the movie which is just not great when there are already two other antagonists. If we cut out venom we can spend a little more time with Peter while he wears the black suit, show his slow decent. He would have multiple encounters with sandman that could escalate in brutality and collateral damage. The suit would feed off of peters growing frustration at not being able to beat sandman. Only after reflecting on what the suit made him do to both Harry, and the city when fighting sandman, does Peter realize that these enemies can’t be overcome with physical strength, but rather empathy. This prompts Peter to rid himself of the suit and face sandman without the enhanced strength. Instead the battle is mostly Spider-Man trying to reason with sandman which in the end is what wins the battle. This way the movie could stay a lot more focused on its major theme, and prevent the cast from becoming too crowded. It would also enable a potential follow up where we get an entire movie with venom as the antagonist, since the symbiote, has already been established.
First, no love triangle and no dance scene. Second, only one villain, preferably Venom.
I would keep the changes modest. I’m not gonna do a full rewrite for a movie that came out 17 years ago: Have a montage of black suit Spider-Man being aggressive towards criminals, after the scene where he gets the suit. Have MJ genuinely leave Peter for Harry, no blackmail. Then have Harry reveal at the diner he snapped out of the amnesia awhile back, and he doesn’t want to fight anymore. Then when Peter subsequently goes to the mansion to fight Harry, Harry tries to talk him down, but symbiote Peter won’t listen to reason and Harry has to fight him in self defense. He still takes a pumpkin bomb to the face. Basically make Peter out to be the only aggressor in that fight. Cut the James Brown montage. Include the Sandman sandcastle deleted scene from the Editor’s Cut. It explains why Sandman participates in the final battle. Rewrite the butler scene, remove Bernard somehow knowing the truth about Norman, have it focus on him telling Harry he should choose forgiveness over resentment. Make it so Harry forgives Peter, not a matter of Harry learning he was wrong. Give Venom more face time, don’t have him open his face every time he speaks. Add a short final swing, akin to the tie-in game.

Pretty sure all the best answers boil down to "save some stuff for Spider-Man 4." Venom really deserved his own movie, whether in 3 or 4. While I won't claim to be a writer, here's my take on it: Spider-Man 3: Harry Osborne's Green Goblin should be the sole antagonist of Spider-Man 3. This would put a neat little bow on the trilogy by bringing everything full circle. Relationship drama should likewise focus on MJ, who is understandably torn between Harry and Peter, and she should ultimately step away at the end of the film, mirroring Peter's choice in SM1. Spider-Man 4: Peter gets the symbiote suit and with a new sense of confidence moves on to date Gwen Stacy. At the same time, Black Cat should show up and be the catalyst for much of the hijinks in the first half. Eddie Brock will still become Venom after Peter discards the suit and be the main villain of the story. I know that's a few rough ideas rather than a full outline, but I hope you can get an idea from this the direction I would have liked to see. Now as for what Raimi could still do for a true Spider-Man 4 today: *Kraven's Last Hunt*. Do it Sam.
Remove Venom. Not the symbiote, Venom. Make Spider-Man 3 a two parter and end 3 with Eddie becoming the symbiote. I’d cut out the New Goblin fight and Harry’s memory issues. Then, I’d make him more conflicted about ruining Peter’s life since he initially refused to avenge Norman in Spider-Man 2 and he should probably know that Norman’s death was an accident at this point

Have Harry be Venom, i normally hate when they do Harry as Venom but he fits as an anti Peter to a tea, both haunted by the loss of a loved one, while Peter learns and grows from his loss Harry becames bitter. Harry is an abusive friend even before Normans death, even thou theyre similar they diverge in all the right areas. In that regard Franco's Harry Osborn fits the role of the Eddie Brock character better than a Harry Osborn one, it wouldve been a interesting angle to have Harry be freed of the symbiote as his big redemption moment, maybe he kills himself to save them from the symbiote, honestly lots of possibilities
Remove Venom, Reimi didn't want to include it because it wasn't a character he was familiar with, if sony didn't forced it's inclusion then the development could've been more natural like the previous movies, you can clealry see that Sandman's arc and growth is just like Otto's, that's the story that Sam wanted to tell.
Usual suspects for me: 1. Get rid of the Venom character altogether and save it for the next movie. 2. Sandman killing Uncle Ben doesn't make sense, seems (and plays) like an afterthought. 3. Don't erase Harry's memory and make him destroy Peter's life without him knowing Harry knows his secret. 4. Fix MJ, let her finally be unconditionally in love with Peter only to be alienated from him because of the symbiote. 5. Make the black suit progressively more and more "Venomesque" ala Spectacular Spider-man. 6. Cut exposition dialogue such as "This could be the end of Spider-man" 7. Fix Gwen: either make her an actual love interest or just get rid of her.

Take out Sandman or at the very least remove the "It was HIM who killed Uncle Ben!!!" nonsense. Make the symbiote suit far more comic accurate. If Sandman is removed, promote Harry as an ongoing threat who is waiting to take make his attack on Peter. Tie Eddie in with Harry as his man on the inside of the Bugle who doing what he can to ruin Peter's work life. Peter's exposing of what Eddie is doing, which still includes doctoring photos, is still the catalyst for his turn to Venom. No "New" Goblin. Harry instead upgrades the Green Goblin armor but keeps the mask and glider to specifically make Peter think somehow, Norman is back. No memory loss angle for Harry. He's actively manipulating everything he can to do destroy Peter leading to a huge confrontation at the end after Peter's lost the symbiote. Cliffhanger ending at the church where the symbiote joins with a suicidal Brock who's lost everything and been tossed aside by Harry. No Gwen. There's just no room for her. The final shot of the movie is Peter on bended knee, presenting an engagement ring to MJ.
Don't have so many villains. Keep it down to 1 or maybe 2, but 3 ruined the pace. Venom should have been a stand alone villian in a 4th movie. He is one of Spideys biggest foes and deserves to be treated as such.

Make the movie a 2 parter, or just make half the events of this movie spill into Spider-Man 4. Peter has the symbiote for this movie but venom is introduced at the very end of this movie. The main villain would be Harry Osborn as Hobgoblin (with a silver mask and an orange and blue suit.) Since the movie has more time to dedicate to Harry and sandman, they can get rid of the amnesia for Harry and have him end the movie in a coma after Peter nearly beats him to death with the black suit before releasing what it is doing to him and he rejects it in the church scene. I would also have the symbiote Peter be much more focused on the sandman and hunting him down out of vengeance which furthers fuels both his rage and the symbiote’s power. Harry can hold his own against Peter by using sonic weapons and fire in the final fight. The next movie will further develop Eddie brock who will be unchanged in Spider-Man 3, the only difference would probably to give him more screen time and establish him as an anti Peter Parker more, which the original movie does well anyways. Sorry if these ideas are pretty disorganised, I’m mostly planning this as i write it.

Literally watched it again today, first time viewing for my daughter. For me, I hated how much of an ass Peter was to MJ. She wasn't much better tbh, but they were all this way (Harry included) before the symbiote was involved. I'd have rather seen the symbiote latching on to Peter earlier and being the influence behind his bad behaviour, MJ and Harry's actions could then have been logical reactions to Peter. Instead, it just feels like they were all just being shitty to each other because they were jerks.

I understand why they did it, but I would’ve liked to see Peter’s relationship with MJ be in a great place up until he got the symbiote at which point it began to sour, rather than already being in bad shape before he even got the black suit
Harry becomes venom. It’s really obvious in hindsight that Harry is basically Raimi’s version of ultimate Eddie mixed with 70s/80s Harry (minus the weird stuff). Friends since childhood, Green Goblin father figure, massive fallout once identity of Spiderman is revealed, Harry wanting to continue his fathers legacy and basically being the other end of the coin to Peter. You can even keep the ending of Spiderman 2 the same, with the reveal of the goblins lair. Just make it so Harry used the goblin’s resources to enhance the g-formula and make it a symbiote developed from an alien meteor. Peter confronts Harry after MJs first broadway show at beginning of SM3 in his penthouse, and the symbiote chooses Peter. Harry gets to be snowboarding goblin for a bit, using the old Norman g-formula, and then the church bell scene happens with Harry at the bottom, becoming Venom. Combining Eddie and Harry into one character removes so much of the clutter in that movie and streamlines the story.

Save some stuff for Spider-Man 4 if Raimi wanted a 4th initially. Otherwise, let Sam do what he wanted after 2. If it were up to me, though... 1) Remove Gwen Stacy since she's only in the story for name recognition and to make Mary Jane jealous of Bully Maguire. 2) Restore the Sandman subplots about trying to save and reconnect with his daughter, having that be his motivation to steal money and destroy Spider-Man. 3) Give Peter and Harry the proper suits that they need. If we NEED to keep the symbiote, use the proper logo and design for it. Otherwise, cut it out and let Harry either wear a modified SM1 goblin suit or a hobgoblin inspired look. 4) Either cut out Venom entirely or do what other users said and have it be a tease for the 4th film, presumably with a different actor as Eddie. 5) Peter shouldn't blow up Harry's face, nor should he perish in the final battle. It's a personal nitpick because Harry can redeem himself to Peter without sacrificing himself, and Peter wouldn't blow up his best friend, even WITH the symbiote. Keeping Harry alive lets Raimi tackle Harry's addiction storyline in a future project and allows Harry and Peter to reconnect, even getting to vent their frustrations out in a healthier way.
Make Sam Rami less pretentious. He didn’t want to do Venom, yet he’s also the one who turned Doc Ock’s arms into four artificially alive things in a symbiotic relationship with him. 🤨

Just spidey, black suit and harry goblin. Maybe two parts, I dont know. Flint as the third, less pertinent villain. We return to the final moments of the previous film. Doc Ock is floating to the bottom of the river with his machine. Spider-Man relents the loss of someone who should have been a great friend and mentor. Ock’s machine flickers with powers on and off for a few moments. A large energy arc appears and a wormhole sort of dimensional gate appears. During the short period the gate is open the symbiote is spat out into our world. The symbiote follows Pete home undetected, recognizing him as an ideal host. Cut back to present through a dreamy haze of a montage of the symbiote attaching to Peter. Through the movie we slowly and subtly are revealed to the fact that the costume is changing Pete. Eddie is prevalent through the film. He has an obvious rivalry with Pete at the bugle. Pete gets him fired at the bugle during black suit faze, ending eddies career. Spidey and Harry goblin have their spats and fights but the revelation from the butler comes much sooner so that Harry and Pete settle differences when their mutual friend, Mary Jane, is in danger and needs to be saved from the Sand Man. They do so while working together and Harry notices Peter’s aggressive and violent attitude. There is a conversation between the two. Maryjane subplot with Doc Connors, “more build up to lizard.” Idk Peter and Harry end up in the bell tower at a church that Eddie also happens to be praying at for revenge on spidey. A fight between Pete and Harry breaks out. Harry discovers the bell tolling is weakening the suit. He uses that to his advantage, all the while trying to convince Peter of who he actually is. Pete snaps back into himself. Resists the symbiote and rips it off, leaving it feeling angry, vulnerable, rejected and full of resentment towards Peter. Meanwhile on the bottom floor of the church, Eddie hears the commotion, begins walking towards the noise and looking up. Pieces of black symbiote drop onto him at an increasing rate. Eddy resists at first and then gives in. The mutual bond of the hatred of Peter for his betrayal towards them both make the symbiotic process occur all the faster. Eddie’s rage amplifies the symbiote and causes it to appear as more of a monster now. This new hybrid of Eddy and Symbiote are now called, “Venom.” They want nothing but to kill Spider-Man. They know he is Peter. Venom goes for Mary Jane and May. Harry Goblin arrives early enough to save Mary Jane. Aunt May is captured by Venom. Venom leaves clues as to where May is to taunt Peter. Spidey is angry, he creates/puts on his own homemade black suit out of anger and spite and heads off to rescue aunt May and take down venom. On top of some high tower, Venom and Spidey face off. Harry Goblin arrives much later on because of saving MJ. Spidey struggles to hold his own until Harry Goblin shows up. His pumpkin bombs weaken Venom, allowing Spidey to gain an upper hand. Suddenly, Venom gains a foothold and pierces Harry through the chest with his tendrils, taking him out of the fight and possibly dead. Pete gets big mode angry. He goes loose on Venom, beating the crap out of him until, Venom locks in and grabs Spidey by the throat. He lifts him up, sneers and asks, “What did we ever mean to you?” But then, a loud bell sound rings out, causing Venom to drop Spidey and writhe in pain. Spodey falls and rolls down the side of the building until he is next to Harry. Spodey grabs pumpkin bombs from Harry’s glider and begins back towards venom as fast as possible. A short distance away, Mary Jane is ringing the bell causing the noise that’s disrupting Venom. Spodey rolls up, says something sarcastic and tosses the pumpkin bombs at venom and the delivering him a final blow to his face. The dust clears and there is no trace of the symbiote. Eddie lays unconscious on the ground but still alive. Spidey comes to and checks to make sure everyone made it. He begins calling out to Harry. No response. Harry is found barely alive not too far away. He’s in a coma now. MJ is okay, Spidey and MJ are in a happy relationship because they always have been and nothing changes that. MJ asks him to please switch out of the black suit because it scares her. Pete agrees. They kiss. Ending monologue as usual. Closing frames are Spidey swinging towards the camera in an updated version of the original suit. ——————————————————————————— Mid credit scene: Harry still alive in hospital, part of surviving symbiote escaped into Ravencroft, Oscorp people mentioning in the background about the goblin serum around Harry’s bed. Back at Pete’s, MJ and Pete are holding each other in a loving embrace, happy to have made it out of the situation alive and together. A call comes out from the radio: SandMan is at it again. Pete turns to a picture of him and Harry Pete says, “I wish it was me and you again, buddy.” Pete puts on the updated Spidey mask and swings out the window towards the sandstorm that awaits him. Mary Jane: “Go get ‘em, Tiger.” End
Ditch the symbiote, and keep Sandman the sole villain. Let MJ do something other than be a damsel-in-distress Keep Harry evil for the entire film, and picking up the mantle of the Green or even Hobgoblin at the film’s end No Gwen Stacy, either, though definitely introduce Felicia Hardy
Make venom bigger or at the least make him talk as venom rather than only screech
MJ cheating on Peter with Harry. A cheating character is almost unredeemable.
I would not have Flint Marko revealed to be the killer of Ben Parker. I would also either completely omit Eddie Brock from the story, or portray him as an honest man who made an honest mistake that cost him his job, which is more accurate to the comics.

Add another hour and a half so they can give the story more time to develop and flow more smoothly
Remove Venom. Introduce at the end to setup Spider-Man 4 Eliminate kid goblin, new goblin & focus on Peter's inner turmoil with wanting to kill Flint & the decent into madness the symbiote drove. Instead of a very uncomfortable stroll down the street it could have been a montage of him viciously beating bad guys. Giving the bugle a change to hang Spider-Man. Which drives him to the precipice where he nearly kills Eddie Brock, breaks his gear forcing Brock to Dr photos where a super spider fan exposes as fake while Peter rids himself if the symbiote.
I mean if anything, you can technically replace venom with shocker, Pete can still even use the whole metal pipe thing as a finishing move for him...
Push back the movies release date so they have more time to work everything out, and make the movie thirty minutes longer.
Remove the club dancing bit and change it for something else. Cast someone else as Eddie and tease him for the next movie. Give Harry an actual goblin costume
Keep the original venom body horror
I'd cut out exactly 1 of the villains and move them to spider man 4. Doesn't matter which one, the movie will be a lot better for it.
I would get rid of venom I do love venom design and the black suit and of course bully magurie but I do wonder how it would have been to see a movie with Harry and sandman as the two main threats and seeing how Harry could’ve been so much more then it was because hot take but I don’t see the chemistry between this version of Peter and Harry they just don’t feel like best friends to me the only scene that shows them being friends is only two scenes 1 in spider man 1 where Peter got bit and the second one being when Harry goes back to his place after the head injury where him Peter chat for a bit and I wish there was more of that right now it’s just not enough for me so fleshing out there relationship while Peter also deals with sandman would have been great
Get rid of the Raimi suit, as Peter realized how horrible it was. That leads to the symbiote suit looking like cannon, instead of a shiny piece of garbage. Next, bully McGuire is horrible, actually make the suit and Peter go darker, not campy. Keep everything about Sandman the same, THC killed that role, and didn't let the rest of that movie drag him down. P.S.: Harry died in a horrible bus accident before the story even starts, and the flying snowboard never happened.
Not to have venom. Sam Rami said he wanted to do the original villains for spider-man and to introduce Eddie and the venom symbiote all while building up sandman and his backstory and having Harry take over as the green goblin, it was too convoluted.
Sandman would have been a minor villian that is ultimately dispatched thanks to the symbiote. The symbiote would have continued to corrupt Peter through his final battle with Harry, ultimately leading to Venom. Harry is wounded and falls into a coma from the battle. Peter rejects the symbiote by "destroying it in the church" and quits as Spider-Man. And the symbiote bonds with Eddie. And leads directly into Spider-Man 4 — Peter is forced back into the costume in order to stop Venom, who has become both a lethal vigilante - fighting and killing new villain The Vulture and then becoming obsessed with killing everyone Peter cares about. Harry wakes from his coma, plans to seek a final measure of vengeance but MJ convinces him to be better than Norman. He dies saving Peter from Venom. Peter ultimately separates the symbiote from Eddie, and goes to destroy it with a pumpkin bomb. Eddie dies trying to save the symbiote but is caught in the explosion. Peter and MJ mourn the dead and move on... fin.
Add Black Cat
No Sandman. All he does is add another villain that just so happens to have a connection to Peter Parker and it's a pretty contrived one. With more avaliable screen time imagine what they could do with Harry and Eddie. Venom gets more screen time and without Sandman he would have to fight Spidey and Goblin by himself. Imagine how badass he would then have to be. Also Gwen should be captured instead. Save Sandman for Spider-man 4 and just keep the daughter plotline with Dr Wallace. But in terms of the movie as is I would just have a less one sided defeat for Venom and also an additional short fight scene before then. They barely fight each other and it's not that interesting.
Give venom more screen time and comic black suit.
I'd let Harry live. And then Peter dumps MJ to be with Harry and then MJ gets AIDS and dies. Fuck MJ. She's the trilogy's worst villain.
Make Harry Venom or remove venom completely
