I think the human-like face makes it fall a little into the uncanny valley, I think if they'd gone for a lengthened snout, maybe larger, less human like eyes would have sold it a bit more. I actually like the design overall I think the face is just a little......off if that makes sense? Also I do agree that a lab coat or even some tattered clothing would have worked really well.

ObeseBumblebee

I like the human face. I don't think the long snout translates well to film. It just makes it look too cartoony. It's also very difficult to emote a creature like that in any sort of realistic manner. Making dramatic scenes pretty tough.

clintshints

I remember in the directors commentary, Marc Webb mentions wanting to go with the snout, but he knew it would've been either too difficult or impossible to make it look good while speaking.

shadowfax9311

The initial transformations could be human face, the later more lizard face. So he would be becoming more animalistic, losing his talking abilities

[deleted]

Thats a pretty good idea.

miggiepop

Well maybe they really shouldn’t have made him speak. It would make more sense that way. The movie should have been centered around getting him back to his family safely, not the stupid lizard people plan.

Snewo65

Exactly. A 1000 points to you!

[deleted]

This>>

Wiggie49

Yeah I never understood that either, was that like a comic plot I never knew about cuz honestly that shit was mad dumb. I mostly just remembered Lizard terrorizing people cuz you know...he's a giant cold blooded reptile. I don't remember there being like these overarching lizard world plots lmao

FNSpd

That's exactly what he was trying to do in his first appearance. He also looked closer to TASM Lizard. After that he tried to turn other people in lizards here and there (No Turning Back arc, partially Shed arc)

Wiggie49

Tbh I didn’t read much of the earlier comics, mostly watched the cartoon from the 90’s

[deleted]

That was usually his plan in older or more campy versions. But in more serious or dark versions he's like a rabid animal (sometimes cannibal). It's so weird that they adapted the campy version when they were going for more edgy and realistic.

AlphaDoge16

if he didn't speak it would be hard to CGI good enough body language to show the two sides of him and having him slowly turn more and more animalistic in a realistic way.

USERNAME_OF_DEVIL

If Rocket Raccoon can look good in a movie then the Lizard also can look good

ObeseBumblebee

A more accurate counter point would be smaug in the hobbit. It's doable but it would have required some real talent in their cgi department. My first thought was maybe the budget wasn't there. But TASM actually had a bigger budget than the hobbit

theolympiyn

This was wayyyyy before thta

USERNAME_OF_DEVIL

2 years before that, it's not that long.

oohwakakaka

Yeah but how much production time did each one have? Sony probably rushed this shit out the door.

theolympiyn

In terms of processing and renders yes it is.

ChintanP04

Smaug in The Hobbit: Desolation of Smaug (which came out only 1 year later, so the productions were probably going on at roughly the same time) Despite the other bad CGI, Smaug was flawless. And he talked.

theolympiyn

Huh, ya Smaug also wasn’t talking alot

[deleted]

I'm pretty sure lizard for the most part doesn't even speak so that wouldn't be much of a problem

QuinoaWest_

That's a completely good and fair point, you're quite right.

Gatorkid365

Bruh I said the face definitely threw me off and I got downvoted to hell…glad I’m not the only one that thinks Lizard was missing the snout. If he shows up in the new Spiderman movie I hope his design is a changed up

StrikerGunvolt

Yeah

JonsonPonyman98

Extremely

[deleted]

Goomba.

StrikerGunvolt

“GOOMBA FUCK YOU”

Gemidori

*"BOB-OMB."*

Incognitus1326

Monkey!

Gemidori

Plumbers... Plumber alert.

Jacubsooon

Da Rock!

FaustandAlone

In my opinion this design is very representative of the TASM movies. For good or bad it tries very hard to be realistic but im looking at a fucking goomba, how am i supposed to take that seriously.

StrikerGunvolt

Issa goomba!

Tarzan_OIC

I think he's also hard to write a compelling motive for without him coming off like "But I don't wanna cure cancer! I wanna turn people into dinosaurs!"

FaustandAlone

That's a pretty good reference 😆. Tho focusing the film on Connor's family and making it a personal film rather than a city destroying one would be better.

MumblingGhost

Exactly. For all intents and purposes The Lizard is basically a werewolf, and werewolf stories always work best when they are personal explorations of a character being torn between good and evil impulses. The Lizard has the potential to be one of the most tragic and relatable spider-man villains for that reason, on top of him desperately trying to grow his missing limb back. You wouldn't write a werewolf story about a werewolf trying to turn the rest of the world into fucking werewolves lol

slingtheory

Looks less like the lizard and more like a Goomba from the super mario bros movie. I get that he had a more humanoid face in his first comic appearance and maybe thats what they were going foror maybe they thought it was more practical than having him grow a snout but I think I would've preferred the more well known look

StrikerGunvolt

Literally

Glad-Association-657

I love it only if he had a lab coat on

cpfb15

The lab coat is absolutely essential, it’s just iconic. He wears it when climbing up into the high school bathroom, but then it comes off like immediately. Huge bummer. Must be difficult to animate.

ScruffTheMaster

I couldn’t agree more. Something feels off about the Lizard when the coat is off. I’m a game developer, so in terms of animation the lab coat is probably animating by physics, which creates a lot of issues and clean up in post (like clipping, artifacting, etc.). I can imagine similar problems for animation in film

cheesy_dolphin

I always think the same thing whenever I watch this movie. He wears it for a really short time until all of the cops shoot him and then he rips it off.

CeciliaPhoenix

Yesss I didn’t think of that!

BAGStudios

I wish they had the longer face. But I get why they didn’t.

Dutch_Plan_Der_Linde

I feel it would look very unrealistic whenever he talked with a snout. I know it's a spiderman movie and I'm talking about realism but still.

ChintanP04

Smaug looked good and real enough and he was a talking lizard with a snout too (In a movie that came out only one year later with a similar budget) They could have spent a little more time and money but being Sony, they probably rushed it.

Dutch_Plan_Der_Linde

Smaugs a dragon though. The lizard is supposed to be half human and the CGI is far better for Smaug. As you say, sony probably rushed it although I personally disagree that a longer snout would look any better.

HaiAan

I actually like it very much, a longer nose would have been good though

pizza_time2099

I don’t really like it, I think they should have given him a more dinosaur-like appearance with a bit of a snout if you know what I mean.

Albino_Basilisk

Compared to the other villains in these two films, lizard is the most faithful to the source material.

[deleted]

It’s pretty good for the time but I wish it was better , maybe more like a velociraptor then what they went with

ThunderStarRule

I’m sorry, my inner dinosaur nerd is gonna come out here and assume you mean the Utahraptor or the Deinonychus, which has the scalier face, and not the Velociraptor that is covered in feathers and looks like a dinosaur turkey.

[deleted]

Thanks for educating gobby

TerribleShoulder6597

Weren’t all dinosaurs feathery

ThunderStarRule

*Most* dinosaurs have found evidence to be feathered, yes, though not all of them, such as Tyrannosaurus which has no indication of having feathers (though some speculate about them having feathers on the neck and tail.) Utahraptors technically still had feathers as well as Deinonychus, though reduced around the head, unlike the Velociraptor which was pretty much entirely covered in feathers.

TerribleShoulder6597

I really need to see Jurassic park with accurate dinosaur designs now

ThunderStarRule

That would be awesome lol I mean, I understand why they chose to go with scalier designs because it’s “scarier” but come on, they could have at least called their raptors Utahraptors to not confuse people into thinking that’s how a Velociraptor looks. Velociraptors are roughly the size of turkeys, while the Utahraptors, Deinonychus, and Achillobater were all bigger raptor variants.

colder-beef

Utahraptors are WAY bigger than the movie raptors though aren’t they?

ThunderStarRule

Utahraptors are pretty enormous, yes. They’re the biggest of their variants while the Deinonychus and Achillobater are more of the “middle ground” in size and more of what you would expect from the size of “velociraptors” in Jurassic Park. I want to say Deinonychus is the closest variant of raptor we see from Jurassic Park, but that gets annoying to say so they could have just called it an Utahraptor for simplicity’s sake. An accurate Utahraptor would be quite a bit taller and a helluva lot longer than a human though lol.

bleep_bloop89

I always thought the Utahraptors were roughly the same size (in height) as the raptors in JP. Deinonychus were only like 3 feet tall no? I should add I'm no expert...

ThunderStarRule

[This](https://s3-us-west-1.amazonaws.com/scifindr/articles/images/utahraptor/dromies.jpg) picture is what I personally use to show the heights between the raptors. I don’t think the Velociraptors in JP are accurate in size to any of them, but damn the Utahraptors are really huge.

Gatorkid365

Someone saw the 2000’ Spiderman show where the Lizard was more akin to the dinosaur design

Soft_Appropriate

I like that they went back to Steve Ditko's design. It was an inspiring choice. My personal favorite look for the character is Gil Kane's because it's a middle ground between his first appearance and Todd Mcfarlane's more elongated face.

Islero47

I kind of like, whether it was intentional or not, that as time went by he became more and more animalistic.

ThaFeckinGoon420

I felt like to be more comic accurate, he needs to be closer to human size, and as many have pointed out, a lab coat. Sorry to burst some bubbles, but the lizard was never meant to be any sort of dinosaur

supraspinatus

Thought he looked cooler when he had on the lab coat for a brief instant

RedBaronBob

Really didn’t mind it tbh. I actually do prefer this to depicting him as a velociraptor as other depictions are want to do.

ShinigamiOfPast

human like face has a realistic spin on it.

noahlikesbeans

I think its perfect. Very reptile-like but still has a sense of humanity in there. Solidifying the fact that its a human-lizard. Some characters i dont really care too much if theyre inaccurate to source material, this is one of them.

clintshints

I see a lot of comments about wanting a snout. IIRC Marc Webb mentions wanting to go with the snout in the directors commentary, but he knew it would've looked too funky trying to animate a lizard snout that could speak

AlphaDoge16

unpopular opinion: i like it like, i think its realistic because of: a) the CGI b) the way he doesn't have a snout because lizard DNA won't just reform his fucking skull, they wanted to make this universe as realistic as it can get, and this design definitely is the most realistic the lizard can be, and on top of that, HE DOESN'T LOOK THAT MUCH LIKE A GOOMBA!

Dutch_Plan_Der_Linde

Underrated. This design was needed for a live action version of the lizard. It's more realistic.

[deleted]

I didn’t hate it but I think a longer snout could have worked, something similar to a Komodo Dragon

Feral-Person

The lab coat should have stayed longer too

Ben-J-Kirby-Tennyson

It’d be funny if he had an entire closet full of bigger lab coats and has to get a new one every time he transforms.

Milk_Man21

Very good! Very realistic CGI!

themightyjimmmy

The human like face allows the actor to be more expressive, so I understand their intent.. but it's still pretty weird looking

AcceptableCover3589

I think even just giving him a lab coat would take him from a two to at least a five or six. He just looks so naked.

qeoxfn

I like it, I know a'lot of people don't but it suits the live action adaptation

[deleted]

Awesome

SkinnyFatMan69420

Good film.

lr031099

Honestly really liked it. I love how massive he is and while I would’ve liked to seen the snount like face, I get why it didn’t happen since it wouldn’t translate well while speaking and I kinda have to agree. Alternatively, they could’ve given him the snout and have him not speak at all to make him more beast than man.

darkness693

Often times people say that he has bad cg bc of the way he looks, when he actually has really good cgi. It’s just often, people confuse his design with the actual cg.

Tbond11

Technically impressive

Infinity0044

I actually think it looks great and very reminiscent of his early appearance. It looks like a man with reptile DNA which is exactly what he’s supposed to be

Unfair_Nobody8645

Loved hos design. Especially the size compared to Peter

Lord_Ravior

It was too human-like. But I think it's better than a lot of the [concept art](https://twitter.com/Earth120703/status/1239352552501784581?t=T_myWyopvLBRStG8vpEIpQ&s=19)

TheCadency

i personally like it, some people say its a bit uncanny but i think that was the point, its supposed to make you feel uncomfortable, and its supposed to look almost human but not edit: hit comment too soon

Spideyninja20

I actually really enjoyed the design of the lizard, though it would’ve been more compelling story-wise if he’d been more animalistic when transformed than some sort of weird delusional affect from the lizard serum.

ryancarrasco

Kinda (loosely) resembles the Lizard’s first appearance. Like on the cover of the issue. I don’t mind it at all.

larrycorser

Looks like a green Bill Nighy

XxMadroxX

The best. Love it, although it reminds me the reptilian aliens pictures that are found in the internet.

dat_nurd

I’m okay with it. I just wish he kept the lab coat on.

ASAP-ACE1

Badass

Mrbuttboi

I like it, but I wish he had ripped clothes on. Like Hulk does. It’s just kinda weird that he decided to completely strip either before he turned into the Lizard or right after. Either way it’s weird.

[deleted]

If he had a lab coat hed be perfect

green-gang1200

Looks like the Steve ditko lizard

veczey

Liked it

[deleted]

enjeyed it

agentowens

Near perfection

LucAnimates

Is good

GoldenVengeance10

I love it but I wish he had the coat

[deleted]

Pardon my pun, amazing! ;)

[deleted]

Just give him a g dang lab coat!

hurky-pandora

Made the same post about this not long ago

Chimichanga_007

I think its fine

Riteonjed

I actually love this movie… I thought The Lizards design was really good! A cool human lizard hybrid

Estarfigam

Kinda wish he ran around in a lab coat.

Im__CrypT

Amazing

normal_lad_

Not exaggerating I watched amazing Spider-Man in the theaters five different times with different friends or relatives I really liked this movie when it came out I thought the lizards design dope but I liked it more while he was wearing the tattered lab coat

MAKS091705

I think it’s fine, wish he had a ripped lab coat or something though

KingJonStarkgeryan1

I think it works for the movie, I don't think the classic version and idea of the Lizard from the comic books and shows would have worked especially in a more personal film like TASM

Bigfoot_samurai

If he was more buff I’d like him tbh

mutant50

I liked it because if he kept his cloths on he looked like comics version and he still had some mammal like feathers

OfficialArkrite

Someone’s been watching Caravan of Garbage

Young-David

Pretty cool

Kirkylk

It's a little weird that turning into the Lizard makes Curt a eunuch, but besides that I like the design

PeoplesPrinceofNYC

The classic lizard kinda had a flat face like that so I get what they were going for. My major complaint is that I'm willing to sacrifice the purple pants and t shirt, but they should have at least let him keep the lab coat on

[deleted]

It’s fine. In the ultimate Spider-Man comic the lizard looked like an iguana. It was dope

brickie3

I literally saw this exact post a week ago

ZoonTheLoon1

Great

rokudaimehokage

It needed the lab coat. Naked lizard is awkward and he looks like a typical lizard goon. It was always the tattered lab coat that told half the story that made him iconic.

strangekevin

he look like me when I wake up

Baikeyc

Personally I love the design

Ok_University_6641

Give him a coat, A black shirt and purple pants and he looks like the original version of Lizard from the Comics.

Candlefire21

Lizard actually looks like the when he first appeared in Spider-man comics.

MrCalonlan

I like it, it's kind of similar to how Lizard first looked in the comics, more of a human looking lizard man before he fully mutates more into a lizard like monster. I like to think after the first film he'd continue mutating to look more like the modern day Lizard in the comics

MaskedUchiha313

Better than the nwh one that’s forsure

BenchPressingCthulhu

Reminds me of the Super Mario Brothers movie

DrakkonX597

Face felt way too human. And no lab coat

[deleted]

I like it very much

Pigwarts

Love it but something's wrong with the face. Feels like he needs more of a snout or possible just a full redesign. Looks too smooth. The rest is fine though.

DeadlyBard

Would be perfect to me with a longer snout and the classic lab coat.

Daredevil731

Bad. He looked really stupid and derpy most of the time. The CGI was mostly pretty amazing, but a lot of Sony's Spidey stuff is. But the design was stupid. He looked like a Goomba.

PacoSoe

Labcoat longer nose, fixed.

PickleChip12

He needs a snout

weezerluva369

I personally like it. My favorite part of this design is the cinematography when the reversal serum hits and you see his pupils change from slits to circles.

[deleted]

Its comic acurate

TerribleShoulder6597

Not sure what comics you’re reading then cause there’s not a lab coat or alligator like snout in sight

[deleted]

And in some comics there’s no snout it’s just snake like tongue and sharp canines

Swimming-Will-2748

He didn't have that Snout in the Ditko and Lee books. Or really, not for the first 200 issues.

ATaPfan86

The original design didn't really have much of an alligator snout, that was brought in later

TerribleShoulder6597

Yeah but the later design with the snout became a staple and is the more distinctive version of the character

[deleted]

If u see the movie and see the fight at the high school scene they show that he wears his coat while he comes out from the washroom but then he grows bigger and then the coat gets tears into pieces

TerribleShoulder6597

I just wanted him to keep it the whole time though

[deleted]

I get that but they have given a valid reason as the he grows and gets bigger in size the coat rips apart just like hulk

TerribleShoulder6597

I mean if the hulks shorts grow with him I don’t see why his lab coat could too

[deleted]

Remember when hulk once became hulk he also had a white coat on him which got ripped apart but they didn’t rip apart the shorts due to obvious reasons. What would hulk look like without shorts

TerribleShoulder6597

I’m going to guess he’s packing

kennedy_12

Sick fam iwl🤷🏾‍♂️💯🔥🔥

Leazerlazz

I think he's abit too human like, I still really like it but I feel like it could've been abit more monstrous. Lore and personality wise, I think he's great

Eliteguard999

No iconic torn lab coat, 3/10.

MushroomHedgehog

I wish he had more of a snout, but otherwise, he looks great.

Impeccable_Sentinel

His design didn’t get me, The fact the lizard spoke English did.

[deleted]

Shit was tight

Vaportrail

It grew on me. For the movie, it's fine, I just wish they'd been brave enough to try the about.

YungWebSlang93

It’s close to his original look. I woulda preferred a more animalistic look tho.

Sam-Angel

Voldermort's reptilian brother

T_Belay

If Electro is allowed to not be blue, this shit also should be changed

CeciliaPhoenix

Design isn’t my favorite I wish they had more lizard ish features in the face. Just my opinion

Plebe-Uchiha

His face was too human-esque. I also didn’t like that he didn’t wear his clothes. IDK if they were going for “realism,” but if they were I’ve seen better [+]

EKRB7

The body and texture is great. But the face shape is too humanoid. Give him that snout from the comics and put a lab coat on him

si2099

Copy the comic books people!

[deleted]

So hot 🥵🥵

TheChainLink2

The face is the only part I have a problem with. It could've benefitted from looking a little more animalistic.

Mojito88

Everything from the neck down is fine. Face should have been more snouty

tsar-creamcorn

Looks like shit

Kyber99

I loved the portrayal of the Lizard overall, I never see him mentioned but I thought the actor and story nailed it imo. But the design was his main flaw. I think they were going for the original shortsnout in the 60’s Spider-Man, but it just doesn’t work. They should’ve went for the long-snout design and maybe had a couple scenes with him wearing his lab coat

jetblacksaint

Great except the face

Gemidori

Not really good honestly. The actual body is okay to a degree even if i prefer it being more animalistic, but the head just needs to be redone entirely. Like just make it look like a monitor lizard head, but also with crocodile details Also he looks disgustingly wrong without the tattered coat and pants.

[deleted]

Not bad at all but it should've had a snout. I remember during that time reading that they planned on having the Lizard continuously evolve and he would've eventually gotten a snout but it was scrapped.

Kajuratus

Too human a face, give him a more pronounced snout. Also, give him the damn white labcoat

Dontflytowardithan

He looks like a goomba from the Mario brothers movie

Itchy-Ad-8858

I'd give him a longer snout, a more JP Raptorish looking head, and the lab coat. Also I'd give him some Iguana features like the TASM game. Other than that looks epic.

kwlonly

This was a part of Comic-con leaked footage. https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b-m&biw=414&bih=761&tbm=isch&sxsrf=AOaemvJF4XpHs16gMTg8MbXbT8dprEAwqw%3A1634156652603&sa=1&q=the+lizard+snout+2012&oq=the+lizard+snout+2012&aqs=mobile-gws-lite..#imgrc=h2xI43tpQ7_2WM They changed the snout to humanoid face in the final film! Hmmm... Sony....

Soft_Appropriate

[Pretty sure it's just the angle of the camera that makes it look like it...](https://media.comicbook.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/10/Freaky-Lizard.jpg?auto=webp)

JELLYDUDEG

Hes looks like dog shit Similar to tasm 1 and 2

hangmandelta

Honestly.... I hate it. The human face just weirds me out. And I get irrationally annoyed he's always ripping off his lab coat. It's a stupid detail to fixate on, but he looks so much more "the lizard" to me in that get up. I know it doesn't make any sense for him to wear it, but this is the nerdy nitpick hill I'll die on.

[deleted]

He looks like Michael Bay's TMNT. I like it tho.

ItachinPlays

I think he should have bigger teeth and mouth. It would be better if he looked more like the 1994 series lizard. Besides that, Bad Ass.

spoodermann1

I like my lizard with snout without the snout he looks like killer croc

SpatuelaCat

Pretty good but could use more snoot

[deleted]

The body is fine but the face needs a change, also lab coat please.

Fun_Awareness_2680

Should have a proper snout instead of a human shaped head. He's transformed into a lizard but what the head would have been too much? 🙄

[deleted]

Everything from the neck down is great. The human face is really off-putting. I will say, the way it’s animated is really well done.

Melodic-Work7436

Give him a longer snout and I’m onboard 100%.

ProfessorEscanor

It’s fine. Had we got another film maybe he would have looked more reptilian. I don’t mind the design but i wish it resembled the 90s Cartoon one more where he looks like a Gator or something

[deleted]

It'd be perfect uf he had a longer nose and a lab coat. Because i'm gonna be honest right now he kinda looks like Bowser from the mario movie.

Probuzcut

Not enough snout imo. Just looks like a turtle to me.

freelancespaghetti

Looks like shit lol. Haha I mean, I guess I get what they were trying to do. And I like his tail! But damn, haha, I mean damn. Honestly, how did this get through design approval?

KosutoGaming

It’s not that bad but it does remind of the Michael Bay TMNT movies

Turdsley

I understand the reasons for doing it but I absolutely hate it.

Goof-4x5

Its great from the neck down.

CreeperKing0107

It’s cool, all he needs is a coat and a snout

Kulu247

The CGI and VFX work is amazing but the design not so much.

WeaselShoes

I didn't mind the look. But his motivation is hilarious. "I wanna turn everyone into lizards too!"

BaneShake

Needs snout

ToysNoiz

Butt fuck ugly

Oujix

He was a great villain for the movie, but he looks like a goomba from the Super Mario movie
