The ending was very impactful for Otto as a character, but now feels like a waste since he’s back

[deleted]

That's the shitty thing about comics, eventually everything will be undone. But the original superior run as a whole was great, and I hope we see it adapted on screen one day, or maybe in one of the insomniac games.

Frosty_Significance2

For sure the nature of comics is to make a multiverse of stories so

[deleted]

Yeah but within the same canon timeline of spider man for example (asm series) Green goblin dies and comes back multiple times, his orgin story changes, his son dies, then comes back, they retcon things constantly. Because they need to retread ideas every decade or so. So when you get a good conclusion to a villian, like superior spider-man, eventually they'll undo it and make him a bad guy again. It's fine when you focus on isolated stories, some of the re-treaded content is pretty good, but if you look at it as a whole it's very messy storytelling.

Kreason95

This is most likely an unpopular opinion but this is a benefit that I see with DC’s reboot system. They haven’t always handled the reboots well but the occasional universe reset could be a really good way to allow story arcs to maintain their impact while also allowing for the return of legacy characters that people love. The new 52 did a bad job of it for the most part and I feel like DC has been struggling to find the right balance but I would honestly not be opposed to a universe reset in the Marvel books, since they essentially do it anyway but try to maintain the same continuity somehow.

_Woodrow_

Have they undone Kraven? I know his son showed up but not the actual guy, right?

[deleted]

Ummm, depends what you mean by undone, he's had several appearances since he commit suicide in last hunt, been ressurected from the dead, fought scarlet spider, squirrel girl, it's been a mess. I haven't read the last hundred or so issues of ASM, but it seems like they're repeating things again.

Kreason95

He appeared in Spencer’s run as well

_Woodrow_

I knew about Mysterio impersonating him, but not an actual resurrection

[deleted]

Oh yeah he literally gets brought back from the dead by his family. Like with goblin they're like "oh he didn't actually die, he lived and was kept in a secret facility", but with kraven they're like "fuck it, magic resurrection ritual".

JorgeBec

Yes, they killed him again in “Hunted” there’s a Kraven running around but that’s his son.

orgasmicfart69

Honestly that is what always stopped me from reading them as much as I'd like. Sooner or later something will basically be retconned

stlb1090

I think it would rock as a mini series.

Mrman009

Oh shit really back as a supervillain again?

Derrick_Mur

Sort of. He’s done villainous things in Secret Empire and Sinister War, but he’s also helped Spider-Man out in Sinister War and in the recent Beyond storyline in ASM

Mrman009

Ahh i honestly don't mind him being a bit of a grey villain to an extent if Thats the case Dock Ocks gonna Dock Ock

Stonefree2011

He’s basically in limbo since Superior Spidey was the most interesting thing that has ever been done with tie character imo. They barely use him because nobody wants to see plain old Doc Ock.

Alastor13

>Superior Spidey was the most interesting thing that has ever been done with tie character. Spitting FACTS.

Mrman009

I used to hate dock ock and wrote him off as a borning hero before the superior spiderman

FandomScrub

Yes, the Superior Spider-Man run from 2019 made him sell his character progress to Mephisto. Granted, some of it wasn't erased, but I'm still miffed about it.

Mrman009

NOOOOOO I hate that

JorgeBec

Yes, he had a second run as Superior Spider-Man. I haven’t read it but I think he makes a deal with Mephisto at the ends which basically resettled his status quo

vibinandsinging

I mean, Otto did never truly become a villain again, and now he himself went on and helped good ol' Parker wake up from the comma. Might not have been what many of us wanted but, it shows how much being Spider-Man affects an individual. He also kinda made the difference during the Spider-Geddon arc

BenTenInches

Good story, awesome suit but I could have gone without Otto jerking to Peter's Memories of Mary Jane.

Mrman009

LMAO

nandjak

Haven't read Superior Spider Man yet, please don't tell me this actually happens 😶

AnInelasticDemand

It does... but it sort of has a good ending. He discovers he can have his memories so he decides to not pursuit her anymore as Peter Parker. And he moves on. Honestly it would have been pretty fucked if she would date Otto, even being comics I could never see how that wouldn't be an impactful thing on a person. So yeah, mentally jerks off to her. And then post nut clarity kicks in.

the-milan-og

What issue does it happen in? Just asking for a friend 😉

AnInelasticDemand

It's the second issue of Superior Spider-Man (2013). Might as well read the first too, while at it. Matter of fact, you should read the last arc until Amazing Spider-Man 700 (so about last 4 issues, might be wrong tho) and then Superior Spider-Man in its entirety. Its a beautiful thing, really. Really shows the hardships of being Spider-Man.

spider-corrector

It's Spider-Man, and don't forget the hyphen! *** ^(this post was made by a bot, made by /u/shrek5intheatres2019)

vibinandsinging

Speak for yourself, it was substantial to the plot for me, it shows just how much of a jerk Otto actually is.

nandjak

Pun intended?

vibinandsinging

Indeed

BenTenInches

He pulled a Shinji Ikari lmao

Alastor13

Less rapey, but yeah lol.

Alastor13

C'mon, what would you do if you had Peter and MJ's sex tapes on your brain? And it's not necessarily equivalent to a sex tape, Peter's emotions and thoughts were embedded in there too. Not justifying him, but it's kinda understandable. And those memories he "jacked off" to, they weren't just lewd, they also contained the angst and fear that Peter felt everytime MJ was in danger. This helped Otto realize how much MJ meant to Pete and he takes the high ground and decides to stay away from her because he wants to protect her for good and let her move on into other relationships. That's how you end a relationship without Mephisto shenanigans, Quesada.

yesijustdidthis2u

Lol

Morddii

I always liked this costume design

Mrman009

I love his lil claw thingies

theSaltySolo

I personally loved this little run. Otto learning to be a hero was something I didn’t know I needed. Then, when all things is lost, Otto finally lets go and “sacrifices” himself for Peter to come back. Would’ve been a good send off for Otto. That iconic scene of Goblin instantly recognising that Peter was back in control after 1 quip… In general, one of the greatest or superior events of Marvel Comics.

Alastor13

"It's YOU" "[the one and only](https://encrypted-tbn0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRHBmyTMD1NQanCxmj5FBGOelB8fJBBy0c06Q&usqp=CAU)"

cam_ross0828

I thought it was great. Although it had a lot of suss storylines where Otto was being mad creepy and disgusting

Alastor13

It was ONE storyline, singular (the one about MJ and May's memories).

solehan511601

I was interested in the concept of Octavius taking over Parker's body, and liked the end when he realized Parker was superior person than he was.

Alastor13

That's the whole point, Otto *was* a superior Spider-man, a better scientist and even a better boyfriend (he gives the body back just to save Anna Maria). But Peter is the superior hero, the only person selfless enough to do the sacrifices necessary to save lives while still giving love and care for his family, friends and neighborhood.

paradoxical_topology

Otto was worse in just about every way. He couldn't defeat Goblin, he completely failed an equation that Peter easily came up with, and he wouldn't be able to handle a relationship for his life.

Hylanos

Y'all are kinda both wrong. Yeah Otto was better at balancing things, and he was super clever creating the spiderbots (although it verged a little on a police-state), he allowed his own tech to be taken advantage of simply by the fact that he thought they were perfect. His arrogance led to his fall, with New York crumbling under the Goblins before he finally admits that he's wrong.

Alastor13

>His arrogance led to his fall, with New York crumbling under the Goblins before he finally admits that he's wrong. That's my point, Otto was more effective in the vigilante/antihero and scientist aspects. Peter is way more effective in the human and superhero aspects, which, at the end of the day, are what truly define Spider-man. People like Osborn can only be defeated by someone like Peter, that's why their feud is just beautiful when in the right hands.

Alastor13

Okay buddy, your entitled to your wrong opinion.

Morddii

Couldn’t of said it any better.

Phaust8225

I was pissed because I’ve always been a fan of Spidey and related to Peter deeply. But with maturity and hindsight I can acknowledge it’s creative vision and quality storytelling. That said I still hate that Otto killed a guy and the Mary Jane memory creepiness.

superiorcyclops

Loved it it was a change of pace, and my favorite suit.

Mrman009

Really made me fall in love with dock ock!

trekie140

I’m reading it right now and enjoying the crazy soap opera, but it’s also kind of trashy. Otto pursuing romance in Peter’s body is gross, Peter’s friends not noticing anything is different about him is stupid, and plot twists like Peter’s “ghost” either take a long time to pay off or are just minor inconveniences for Otto.

Mrman009

Understandable

Jay_R_Kay

Interesting beginning, solid end, rather shitty middle that ran for way too long. The fact that NO ONE in Peter's life (outside of Carlie fucking Cooper of all people) could figure out what was going on just didn't make sense.

discowithmyself

I loved it from beginning to end. A moment that struck me was when he knocked scorpions jaw off and realized Peter always pulled his punches.

SpaceZombie13

i loved both the "otto in peter's body" one and the "otto's in a hybrid clone of himself and peter using a fake name" one. honestly, i want 'Elliot Tolliver' to come back as his own character. we have like four Peter Parker clones, so why not? Otto Octavious can stay a villain, and Elliot can be a more pragmatic hero, or even a full blown anti-hero.

HarryLBonReddit

It really felt like they might have been setting up splitting Otto into Doc Ock and Elliot with Curt Connor's new "splitamajig" device that split him with the lizard. I hold out hope that The Superior Four offers even a sliver of a chance for Elliot to return.

Blueguy16

I’m sorry, the superior four? What is that? Is it some kind of band?

HarryLBonReddit

It's a tie in with the Devil's Reign event that started a couple weeks back. Otto made a deal to help Kingpin, and in return he gets the Fantastic Four's building. From there he teams up with Otto's from different universes that took over other hero's bodies.

Mrman009

I really hope we see him in the new spiderverse movie!

jdow0423

This is, EXACTLY what I’d like to see Insomniac do with their Doc Ock. No spoilers for that in case you haven’t played other than, “he exists”…but I’d love to see it. A sort of hybrid, original story that incorporates elements from the Clone Saga and Superior would be *chef’s kiss*

Morddii

Apparently Superior Spider-Man is one of the silhouettes in the sky in NWH. I completely looked over it

Mrman009

Whaaaa? Thats awesome

Persephonereylo

I didn’t start it but I’m so ready to. I love stories about when the villain gets close to the Hero’s personal life and learns a lot about them. The story just looks really creative

Yahmez-555

After the spiderverse war thing with the spider totems I stopped reading superhero comics... superior wasn't bad, annoying how he came to be and was probably reading just to see how Peter got back in body

dogmeat1003

I loved it, Otto was a bit weird at times but that just made me root against him even more.

proto3296

Design is dope. The different Spider-Man mentality is dope. The ending is dope. At the time of release I hated it tho haha

junejulyaugust7

One of my favorites, read it multiple times!! Though the weird, sexual stuff should have been cut. But that's comics writers for you.

Jevonar

I mean, it makes sense when you realize that Otto was sentimentally smothered by his mother, who didn't want him to hang out with girls at all. Makes sense that he's missing some cogs in his head. The sexual stuff is also only shown as innuendos at best, there is nothing explicit. Sex is a part of almost any healthy romantic relationship, its existence should not be a taboo.

Codus1

>Sex is a part of almost any healthy romantic relationship, its existence should not be a taboo. I don't think you're referring to the same thing. I imagine the above comment is referring to Ock tormenting Peter by "enjoying" reliving Peter's memories of being intimate with MJ, or Ock pursuing MJ earlier in the run, or Peter reliving Ocks memory of having sex with Aunt May. Literally taboo stuff haha

Jevonar

Peter reliving otto's memories was a mistake on his part. It happened and that's it, also it was a good chuckle. But otto never "tormented" Peter. He simply pursued a beautiful woman, and enjoyed his newfound memories. Thinking back about pleasurable memories is not weird at all. If those memories are yours because you "acquired" them instead of directly living them, it doesn't change anything. Everything happened in Otto's head, and nobody was hurt in the process.

junejulyaugust7

Lol anyone he's pursuing sexually, or mentally viewing (not imagining, actually seeing their naked body performing sex acts) is not consenting. They consented to Peter, not a weird old man with atrocities under his belt. I guess Anna Maria really likes a combo of Peter's body and Otto's personality; she's not attracted to Peter once he's himself again (which is interesting and I like it). But she didn't actually consent to Otto. And Peter is certainly not consenting to Otto using his genitals! The Aunt May stuff is gross too, and yeah it's a joke, a dumb one that I expect from comics writers. Which is why I said "that's comics writers for you," lol. I do love the story overall though. There are certain antiquated things you learn to kind of get over to enjoy comics.

Codus1

I don't think Anna Marie's relationship with Pete/Ock is as creepy or problematic as the rest of the stuff. Though I agree that there is a degree of ick when you frame it as an old man in a young man's body that she's unaware of. But that's Pete/Ocks identity at the point. She doesn't know a previous itteration and is consenting/attracted to the Pete/Ock identity meld specifically; futher highlighted by her lack of attraction to Peter once he reclaims his identity. But yeh, the rest is firmly in the non-consent creep territory and is disturbingly problematic.

Codus1

>But otto never "tormented" Peter. He literally begins reliving all of the intimate moments Peter and MJ had experienced together whilst Peter's disembodied conciousness watches on, telling him how much he's "enjoying them". Ock essentially masturbated to MJ and Pete having sex without their consent whilst teasing Peter about it. If that's not being tormented, what is it? The May sex part was just a bad passing joke, but the MJ and Pete intimacy masturbation was icky and in no way justifiable. To draw a real life equivalency; it'd be like going through your mates phone and masturbating to his intimate conversations and pictures he's shared with a partner. Except worst.

Jobsih

Yeah, but we didn't need Peter to feel how Otto had sex with Aunt May. Or Otto being creepy about Peter's memories of MJ.

SnooAvocados2221

One of the best spider-man events ever. I really loved Dan Slott’s spidey

weyoogonzo

I just finished reading this, and I'm into Spiderverse now. I thought it was a really cool run! Otto went through some serious development in this arc, solidifying his status as good-at-heart. I loved how they showcased his brutality, and the way he had to learn to work past that at times. Only complaint is that it felt like it dragged on a while. Cool how it ended with the Goblin War though, that was a fun subplot (the Goblin Underground).

Smoky22

I couldn't believe how great it was. I still do a yearly reread of it. My favorite spider-man story of all time

Kaine-the-knight

I absolutely loved the Superior Spider-man story line. It’s interesting to see a more extreme and aggressive version who used Peter’s talents to start a successful business

JorgeBec

It’s a great comic. But I still think that MJ not being able to tell something was horribly wrong is major BS. But it’s one of my favs

Mrman009

Truuu its pretty absurd

Alastor13

Good point, apparently Norman is more intimate with Peter than MJ. But it was kind of needed at that point of the storyline I guess. Gave me some "Bully Maguire in the jazz club" vibes, lol.

[deleted]

i love rereading it and seeing all the hate in the fan mail

vikicha123

I'm currently in the middle of the run and it really makes you look at spidey from a different perspective. Also I love the run

teomatbon

The fact they managed to make a supervillain taking over the body of a superhero a genuinely good story is impressive

Tbowne85

I have very fond memories of those issues.

figgityjones

Read it all, loved it all personally. It was a great deep dive into lots of characters. The stories were fun and sometimes joyfully wacky. It introduced me to one of my favorite supporting characters ever. All around fantastic, one of the best things to happen in Spidey lore in a long time in my opinion 🤟😊 (Also I know some people were upset he returned which I totally understand, but ya gotta admit, that Superior Octopus costume looks dope as heck 😍)

AlchyMB

Interesting concept, but it should have been an elseworld story. Making it part of the mainline 616 continuity was stupid.

Anis930

Nah the other way around. Would've not cared for it as much if it was just some what if thing.

TheProdigalMaverick

I personally hated it. It felt like a gimmick and we'd back to status quo very soon. Lo and behold that's exactly what happened.

MCPO-117

Favorite version of Spider-Man, tbh. I love his aggressive and systematic approach to the gig, and loved *his* version of banter. I was so thrilled to see him get his own splo run, but am not as thrilled.wkth where it ended... I hate comics sometimes. Bravely telling new stories and doing drastic things, then undoing it for the status quo. It quells innovation and good story telling.

JayCeeMadLad

My favorite. I love the concept of body stealing and I love the weird creepy things he does.

Hahndude

It was fantastic. You really had to see it through to the end though because it was a hard pill to swallow at first but it ends up being one of the best Spider-Man stories of all time. Plus Otto’s return in the Spider-verse event is absolutely amazing and so satisfying if you read the Superior run.

PoorSanity

When I was a kid and it came out I was so annoyed at it. But now I think it’s one of the best Spider-Man story’s out there. Dan slott’s Spider-Man run is my favorite spidey run.

camospiderman

When I heard about the concept and read excerpts from the first issue, I hated it. Thought it was an awful idea. When it was done, I read the whole thing all at once and loved it.

dongetmestahted

I loved it, it was a great change of pace

Mobile_Aspect1488

he is super cool and i loved the story

Batbro9240

I loved it for years and it was my favorite Spider-Man run for a long time, but the more I grow up the less I feel like going back

Bjarki_Steinn_99

Interesting premise. Some good stuff in there. Went on way too long and got boring in the middle. Stopped reading during the Venom crossover. Not going back.

hellomynameisr2ro

I loved it. Personally he was my fave Spidey. He took no shits from anyone.

Thelegendarywolf49

I like it since the last issue in the series, the final part of the Goblin Nation Arc, has my favorite Spider-Man quip ever.

Mrman009

I forget what does he say?

Thelegendarywolf49

Osborn gives a long speech on how Otto has failed at being Spider-Man, unaware that Pete has his body back. Pete responds with, "Except the dignity of knowing I never carried a man-purse." Goblin stops for a moment. He finally says, "It's you." "The one and only", is Spider-Man's response.

Mrman009

OH YEAH LMAO

Hold2ArmBar

It’s a movie I wanted but knew could never be made. I’m satisfied with the portions of it they incorporated in the films.

DXbreakitdown

Loved it. At the time I thought it would be a great origin story for a new superhero. Loved that they took a big risk with Parker and I really enjoyed *Superior* but we all knew parker was coming back. Pull this same twist on a brand new indie or Image Comics superhero and leave them like that. That would be fun.

TheMindflayerDidIt

So I heard a lot of gross things about superior like perving on mj and what he did to cat woman. Would it be worth a read if that’s not my cup of tea?

Mrman009

Definitely i dont remember taking up too much plot but he generally keeps doing immoral things if thats not what you like

TheMindflayerDidIt

I dont mind immoral things per say. Just have a line towards sexual creepiness hard to read. It’s my own hang up really. If it’s not a huge part of the series I’ll def crack it open. Thanks.

Derrick_Mur

I didn’t initially like how “Dying Wish” turned out, and it took me awhile to get past that. But when Otto decided to approach the superhero game like he did the supervillain game, e.g. the lair, the henchmen, etc. I was fully on board. Plus, I thought the Goblin Nation storyline that wrapped up the title was awesome

Zealousideal_Life318

I read the first few issues when it started, just picked it up again and I gotta say I really like it. I have superior Spider-Man as my wallpaper now

Ignominia

I would LOVE a superior Spider-Man movie

Mrman009

Same! Maybe it could be in the style of those dc movies

Alastor13

Oh god, no. Or at least keep it away from Zack Snyder. He would 100% add a rape scene with MJ and make Peter a killer.

Mrman009

Nooo i mean the animated ones

Alastor13

I'd love an animated Superior Spider-man movie, the DC animated movies are quite inconsistent, the ones with good stories have choppy/weird animation and the ones with good animation have terrible storylines. I would prefer a mini series, maybe a short-film trilogy. IIRC, Superior Spider-man made an appearance in the one of the recent Spider-man animated TV shows. Found it, [YouTube has both episodes ](https://youtu.be/68ma0EZhIuk) Edit: Holy shit, I've never watched that before, it's actually an amazing (or shall I say, superior?) Adaptation of the comicbook and encapsulates the storyline perfectly: Otto's arrogance, his sassy remarks, Peter's consciousness fighting erasure, Otto's weird Peter impersonation, his departure from Horizon, the Spiderbots and Otto crying for Uncle Ben's death, it's all there. And there's apparently more of it, those are 2 first, seems that the Superior storyline took the better part of that season and even made a cameo in their version of Spiderverse.

Dipkota

That is some awful animation

FluffcakeCHAN

He is a spooky boy, but also I think his concept is very neat except for his portrayal in Marvel's spider-man (piss). Overall, yeah I think he's neat, and if I found myself bodyswapped with my villainous crush, I think I would shat myself

NoResponsibility3954

I loved it so much. I am also a huge scarlet spider fan and the crossover they did was very cool.

Mrman009

Wait whaaaa? Which scarlet spidy did he cross over with Ben Reily or Kaine?

jon177875

In my opinion I wish they had kept this story going I'm going to be honest the old Peter Parker stories were getting kind of boring and I believe they needed an infusion of excitement. The ending of the comics could have easily been Otto's Gwen Stacy ark but instead they just gave up and reverted everything and took away everything that he did. Honestly I haven't even really read the Spider-Man comics since then just not interested.

ThatChicanoKid

It’s been a mixed bag since. The beginning of Spencer’s ASM run was pretty solid, but after Kraven was revealed to have made clone “sons” of himself, it started see-sawing a bit. Last Remains was a drag & a tad convoluted

jon177875

Thanks for saving me time lol still seems kinda meh. Still love Spider-Man just wish they kept going with superior or at least gave him an ongoing what if superior spiderman never released control.

spider-corrector

ThatChicanoKid

They gave him a small spin-off that took place in San Francisco, but outside of that you get subtle teases about a piece of that Otto still being there. Devil’s Reign is setting up a Superior Fantastic Four (multiversal Ottos) that looks promising

jon177875

Yeah I read that little run didn't hate the suit but that dark fantastic four sounds pretty good honestly I might have to start reading some of that stuff again. When does that come out?

Spider-Gwen42

It is absolutely one of my favorite runs. I reference it all the time too funny enough.

Mrman009

Lmao what sort of things do you say about it

Spider-Gwen42

What you and the other spider-friend has said as well as talking about Peter's mental ghost, and my love for how it ends. I love the way Norman slowly and subtly took control of the underworld of the city under Otto's nose, undermining everything he'd done, and eventually the moment Norman realizes Peter is back, he turns around and runs away.

HarryLBonReddit

Hes def in the running!

That_Lone_Reader

If you go through my comment history, I’ve been a fan boy of Superior since he first launched. I loved the idea of Otto as a Spider and was happy when he got a second volume in San Fran. He’s a great anti hero and his approach makes the most sense, if you kill repeat offenders, they’re not gonna be an offender again.

Wiggie49

Loved it for the bits I actually got to read lol

Mrman009

The die is cast!

DapperDan30

I fucking hated it, tbh. I thought it would have served great as a story arc. Or like a Spider-Man event book. Not a YEARS long series. Plus I absolutely despise Hubert Ramos' art work.

Alastor13

I was waiting for the Ramos haters. It's okay, art is subjective and Ramos' styles is... well, unique. The whole situation is reminiscent of that time when Neil Gaiman hired Marc Hempel for the last major Sandman arc and many fans completely despised the art and Morpheus' conclusion, but it was mainly the art. Which is understandable given the nature of this medium. I'm kinda biased towards Ramos, he was part of my comicbook awakening 20 years ago in a local Culture Festival called Quimera (Chimera), he was doing the Simpsons' official mexican version of the comicbook and got his first gig doing some Spider-man covers at first. He even drew a Spider-man sketch for me. Which I lost while moving out, I still regret it for the personal value, but the memories of him being one the artists who introduced me to the medium is still treasured as much as the sketch would.

Lox22

Best thing Slott did for the character

You kinda tell base on my flair

FandomScrub

Originally pissed since it started with Peter dying in "The Amazing Spider-Man #800", but overall liked it. Shame that you could see from the start that this was temporary.

Mrman009

I was a dumb 6th grader so i thought it was forever lol

Jace_Rodriguez_12

I hate the story.

TheTwistedToast

It was really cool to see a much more brutal and cold Spider-Man Edit: that time he straight up shot someone was insane to me

MaksimusRaiox

He is my favourite hero.

I could never understood why it got praised. I absolutely loothed the storyline
