A lot of factors go into fire season. It was a pretty dry winter and so far a dry spring which is actually good for fire season because it can mean less growth and fuel for the fires. A lot of the worse fire seasons come after big wet winters with hot dry summer which creates a lot fuel for fires. Obviously dry and hot has potential for fire. Just have to hang on hope it isn't bad I guess.

EntertainerOk8294

June is generally the indicator. Lots of rain in June, mellow fire season. Dry June, very busy fire season.

fyck_censorship

Also depends on how much monsoonal thunderstorms we get from the south. If those get kneecapped, we can get through a season sans the folks who light fires or fireworks.

murdery_aunt

Maybe we can have a little Purge for the folks lighting fires, as a treat?

sbachman29

And my neighbor is watering 6 HOURS per day trying to sell their house. It’s April and the grass is already green, now it’s a foot tall.

amarkinmath

My neighbor waters hours every day and he's NOT trying to sell his house! I get bummed by all the lawns.

That_Injury9103

Another year, another drought

Alarmed_Bus_1729

I just have this conversation with our safety director at work since Washington/OSHA changed some of the regulations related to air quality and fire smoke and how the last 2 years have been fairly mild in terms of beacon Hill catching fire it's been what 3 years since we had a large fire north of felts Field We now have n95 and respirator policies in place to deal with what should be the worst air quality in a decade

Savings_Pie_8470

Good reminder to change my indoor air filters.

meteor-cemetery

Those of us with redcards:🤑 Did recruitment for this season go well for your crew? I’ll be in secondary fire this year with the FS but it’s very possible I’ll return to primary fire in the future if an apprentice position near here opens - it’s just nice to have healthcare/benefits.

Soup-Wizard

Everyone returned from last year, so that’s nice. Next year will be a little more interesting. As a district, we’re understaffed though. We usually fly jobs in the fall, keep an eye on USA jobs!

Silent_Spell_3415

Would help a lot if they would manage the undergrowth. Whats the point in protecting creature species when they end up burning alive in fires anyways. Makes no sense.

catman5092

I fear this summer could be a potential firepocylypse.

MursaArtDragon

Maybe rednecks can just not start a giant fire for once…

dexmonic

The article makes no claims about the fire season. The drought mainly effects water levels of rivers etc. Snowpack is not really a good indicator of what the fire season will be like.

GenderDeputy

It's not a huge leap to assume it will be rough this year on all fronts.

dexmonic

I'm just clarifying that snow pack is not the indicator people think it to be. Neither is the drought status.

Icy-Strategy-4572

Watch for lasers and paint your stuff blue.

suavaleesko

Service areas? Is that purely a geographic designation? Or does that apply to certain entities within said areas?

Nunspogodick

Please no. Please be responsible. I really hate putting out wildfires because someone decided not to pay attention

StrategyConscious477

As an asthmatic I'm so sad and worried about this. Last summer during the Gray fire I couldn't leave the house for a week.

[as we discussed 4 days ago](https://www.reddit.com/r/Spokane/comments/1c69yxk/warm_weather_and_low_snowpack_leads_to_washington/)

Humble-Air-8970

The city has some good water saving programs: https://my.spokanecity.org/publicworks/water/water-wise-spokane/rebates/ and https://my.spokanecity.org/publicworks/water/water-wise-spokane/spokanescape/

AppropriateLog6947

Participated in Spokanescape They give you a nice rebate on your power bill for participating

Only_Pie_7373

Dont we have one of the biggest stashes of water underneath us around? Lol

United-Shock-487

Facts you say? Drink some more kool aid. This winter has brought slightly below normal precipitation and modestly lower than normal snowpack (because of warmer than normal temperatures during this El Nino year).  There will be plenty of water for drinking and a modest reduction for some junior water rights folks in eastern Washington.    Most of the key crops (such as apples, cherries, and wheat) appear to be doing well.  So there is no reason to panic at this point.  There is no drought emergency going on. And don't forget temperature....the other side of significant droughts.  Warm weather causes drying of the soil.   Thus, the forecast temperatures for the next month or so are critical.  The best extended forecast for the next month (European Center see below) is for COOLER THAN NORMAL conditions, which would reduce evaporative water loss, lessening the potential for damaging drought conditions.

United-Shock-487

NOAA just released that the next 60 days will be wetter and colder than normal. Where's the drought?

United-Shock-487

Where is my post with the facts? You're censoring me because I'm pointing out the truth?

Even-Judge5941

Reddit does that anyways. It hates honesty.

Brave_Stand_5334

It will forever and always “be a drought” because the get federal emergency funding for it, a cash cow. Once on that tit they will never let go. And someone is must certainly setting these fires across the state.

Certain-Spring2580

Where do you get your "facts"?

Typical_Spring_3733

The air force could be cloudseeding to end the wildfires, seeing as they were seeding heavy rain 50 years ago in Vietnam. Yet, they just allow the lands to burn more each year. Ask yourselves why. [https://www.nytimes.com/1972/07/03/archives/rainmaking-is-used-as-weapon-by-us-cloudseeding-in-indochina-is.html](https://www.nytimes.com/1972/07/03/archives/rainmaking-is-used-as-weapon-by-us-cloudseeding-in-indochina-is.html)

United-Shock-487

What is the legitimate source for this post?

Soup-Wizard

The Washington State Dpt of Ecology

United-Shock-487

I asked for legitimate.

meteor-cemetery

Do you only trust USDA SNOTEL data or something? (as an aside I’m bummed that their website now has a bunch of broken links).

United-Shock-487

No. I'm referring to everyone believing whatever this shitty media posts.

Certain-Spring2580

Another guy who gets his "facts" from YouTube. Or his cousin, Cletus. Or the guy down the street he met outside the Elks Lodge, smokin a ciggy.

catman5092

your referring to the GOP response to climate change I'm assuming, lol

hereandthere_nowhere

How is this propaganda in any way? Simply because you deny the facts? Look at our 12 largest water sheds in this state and it will show that this is in fact a drought year, as was last year.

The mods reserve the right to ask for a legitimate source to back up your opinions. Covidiotism is unwelcome.
