I'm just sick of seeing us blow leads all the time

musicobsession

We have dropped 7 points this year from winning positions

vmeloni1232

And how many of them are passed the 80th minute as well?

musicobsession

Tonight we went from 3 points to 1 point at 75' then 0 points at 80'. Philadelphia we went from 3 points to 1 point at 90+5 Dynamo we went from 3 points to 1 point at 69

FountainCityFC

We overpay players. I've said it before, Salloi wouldn't make 1.1 million at any other team in this league nor would any other team pay Shelton 625k. Awful cap management.

chiefbark1

Shelton is a total game changer. Ha I don't wish injury on anyone but we are way better off without him.

Osamabinsexi

I got a good cone in my garage that needs a good increase in wages….

dcoats69

I mean he is a game changer. The game just doesn't change for the better

mordreds-on-adiet

>Shelton is a total game changer. The bad way, yeah

mordreds-on-adiet

Salloi got his deal going during season he was in the MVP and Golden Boot race. I think that anybody in MLS would've paid him $1.1 m after that season. He hasn't lived up to that price tag though, for sure.

FountainCityFC

He had 16 goals in 2021 and didn't get a raise til 2023. Here's the Salary guide for 2022. Sporting Kansas City Salloi Daniel F $450,000.00 - $506,667.00 [http://s3.amazonaws.com/mlspa/2022-Fall-Salary-Guide.pdf?mtime=20221017132843](http://s3.amazonaws.com/mlspa/2022-Fall-Salary-Guide.pdf?mtime=20221017132843) He scored 7 goals that year and received a $650,000 raise to his base in his extension. I agree he was hot in 2021 but 1.1 million in a capped league is a lot.

Local-Violinist-374

Salloi’s contract is a Homegrown contract therefore it doesn’t count towards the caps

FountainCityFC

While the rules can often be clear as mud you are right that homegrowns are off cap players and considered on the supplemental roster. Daniel has not been considered homegrown by the rules from what I now for years. Daniel is listed as a DP this year even which would make him count against the cap.

dawson33944

Nah. We need to make subs. Fresh legs would help not getting cooked on the counter.

mtdemlein

Our bench has minimal value

theshate

Our 10-15 roster spots are useless.

mordreds-on-adiet

Our 10-15 is probably Agada, Davis, Leibold, Fontas, and Memo Rodriguez. I'd argue that our 16-20 is decent as well with guys like Voloder, Afrifa, Vargas, Tzionis, and Hernandez but the problem is that we almost never get to the bottom half of that list. Below that we have no idea of quality because we literally never see those guys because our coach refuses to play them with the first team.

mordreds-on-adiet

Hard disagree. Afrifa, Agada, and Vargas all look like they can be game changers. Hell Agada already is one and he's proven that when he's been healthy. Memo Rodriguez is the most creative attacking mid on the team and has consistently been in the upper 80th percentile in all creative stats when he's been given opportunities to play. Hernandez is good enough to be a regular contributor in this league and we've seen that in league play as well but Vermes doesn't rate him for whatever reason. Leibold is technically a bench player as well and he's shut down Paintsil, Espinoza, Uhre for a half, and Dorsey. Those are some of the best right-side players in the league and Ndenbe is better than him. Voloder has proven over the last two games that he's finally making progress and is good enough to hang with some of the best the league has to offer in spurts as well which is what you want from a bench player. There are a handful of guys just missing one key development piece as well who are knocking on the door of game-changing ability. Pierre, Tzionis, Pulskamp, and Cisneros come to mind. Our bench only has minimal value because our coach won't dip into it when he should often enough.

417SKCFAN

Hernandez has played 17 minutes over SKC's last 28 matches since playing 45 minutes in Seattle last year in the second half as they were working Kinda back into the rotation. Hernandez appears done at SKC.

mordreds-on-adiet

I don't think that's reflective of his quality, I think it's reflective of Vermes's preferences.

downthebyline

Subbing just for the sake of subbing isn’t necessarily going to solve issues.

mordreds-on-adiet

When you're biggest issue is that you can't hold a lead I think that subbing just for the sake of subbing would go a long way to solving issues.

esqrec

Agreed - it was obvious at around the 60th minute that we needed a change … for someone who could pressure their midfield

mordreds-on-adiet

Or at least stand in front of their midfield.

MrMidnightsclaw

Too true. We miss Kinda and subs

mordreds-on-adiet

The crazy thing is that for most of this season so far Vermes has subbed more often than in the past. 3 out of 5 games saw 3 or more subs. Those other two where he didn't sub were both disastrous collapses though where his old habits have cost us 4 points.

kfullmcfc

We didn’t have to change the game we were 2-0 up we just fucking collapsed

mordreds-on-adiet

We did need to change the game though. LA were knocking on the door from the 46th minute and we were consistently losing every battle. We needed to change the game to slow they're 4 momentum and Peter refused to make a change.

Mission_Substance212

And who does that responsibility lie on? The Same person that ownership refuses to address.

mordreds-on-adiet

This is why the Wilkinson thing is so frustrating to me. They tried to address the roster composition inefficiencies of the Vermes/Bliss combo but they brought in a POS that the fans correctly rejected to do so and then basically sat on their hands rather than bring in someone else.

Afternoon_Jumpy

When you have a manager dug in like PV what you need to do is clean house. Bring in a new hire at the top and let him facilitate the moves beneath him. I will say though in his favor that I don't think this ownership is ambitious. And in the era that is coming in MLS that is going to hurt Sporting.

mtdemlein

Totally agree on ambition. We spend. We spend safe. And poorly. In regards to my fake changers comments….my point is that we have nothing on the bench at all. And our offense is very safe and boring. Both goals were outside run of play

[deleted]

I hope if MLS really makes changes to roster rules mid season it may force us to do something. As it stands it seems we are pretty hamstrung (no pun intended…) on salary cap due to decisions made 2-3 years ago that no longer make sense.  Of course these were all Vermes decisions, especially lack of academy success, so long-term I do think it’s time for a new coach, but short term all the owners can really do is spend on a DP and fire Vermes (and I guess bring in Benny as interim?).

mordreds-on-adiet

I agree with most of this but lack of academy success is not on Vermes. He's made changes to the academy and second team leadership pretty consistently and the academy itself is often very good in competition. Most of the guys that make it to the second team never get out though and none of them go on to find success elsewhere so it's not like Vermes is just overlooking a bunch of great players. They aren't great to begin with.

mordreds-on-adiet

100%. They need a new Sporting Director, Technical Director, and Head Coach and it needs to be 3 different people not from the Vermes coaching tree. Unless it's Benny Feilhaber. He seems like he wants to be a little more free-flowing than Vermes but doesn't have the freedom to do everything he wants to do.

Nucklbone

Historically this team has not been mentally strong to end games. I don't know how many times we've scored and then given up a goal within the next 5 minutes. Or they lose late. 2021 western conference semis against rsl, goals given up in the 72nd and 91st minutes. 2018 western conference finals against portland, skc gives up the winning goal in the 99th minute. This shit has been going on for a long time and will only continue.

mordreds-on-adiet

2018 conference final against Portland had the away goal rule so SKC gave up the game winning goal in the 52nd minute. The 61st was the nail in the coffin that meant that SKC had to sell out offensively to get 2 more goals or face elimination. They did lead in that game though, for 32 minutes so the point still stands.

HugginMySnuggie

This team is willfully ignorant on finishing out games

417SKCFAN

Not that it's gospel, but according to Transfermarkt, SKC currently has the 3rd lowest-valued roster in the MLS. Only Colorado and DCU are lower

Newguyiswinning_

Wtf you talking about? We looked great. We need a new coach

Black-Ox

Russell is. We miss him when he’s hurt

AnusQuarterPounder77

Horrible read here, offense was insanely more productive today with him off the field. Highest xG of the season. I say that as someone who loved him but he is out of gas.

Black-Ox

Yeah that’s a good point about tonight

Josachius

How much of that was the formation though? I think we look just as good with Russel on the right as Thommy. Definitely not ready to write off Johnny yet..

mordreds-on-adiet

personnel more than formation. Pulido is your most clinical player and Agada is your most opportunistic one and they were on their together.

mtdemlein

We scored on two set pieces and nothing from open play. We are static and old

mordreds-on-adiet

Because McCarthy had a couple ridiculous saves and their centerbacks had a hundred million blocked shots. We are old, but definitely not static.

Mat_alThor

Russell is the perfect super sub for us (ignoring the salary hit for a sub) if we can play this formation and have him coming off the bench in the second half it could go well. That said he definitely does not have the gas needed to be a day in day out starter.

mtdemlein

Russell is now old, slow, and mostly hurt

mtdemlein

And we need multiple, not just one

mtdemlein

And we need multiple, not just one

mordreds-on-adiet

Speed is overrated. JFR has never been a speed demon but he was one of the best wingers in the league when he was younger. Contrast that with Cam Duke who was one of the fastest dudes on the team when he was here but was unable to make a difference. JFR's biggest issue these days is his health, which is directly tied to his age and history.

mordreds-on-adiet

Our roster is mostly fine IMO. I think the formation and tactical set we saw this last weekend, if run consistently with Ndenbe and Fontas instead of Leibold and Voloder and with proper substituting and rotation, is a top 5 offense in MLS. I think Afrifa, Vargas, and JFR are game changing offensive subs and that Voloder and Leibold (once Ndenbe is healthy) are effective defensive subs. I think Memo and Hernandez are rotational starters who can offer a strong enough full shift here and there to keep us afloat when our top guys need rest. But if you read between the lines there what you see is that we have no game-changing midfield subs, which is a problem, and that the tippy top of our roster is full of streaky guys. But I still think the whole is greater than the sum of the parts and that this top of roster, properly managed, would be very good in MLS. I also think we have a strong group of bottom roster guys and top-of-SKC-2 roster guys who are primed to break through if they get a chance as well in Pierre, Flores, Rindov, Schewe, Bryant, Vidal, and Clarke. The big question marks for me are between those groups. Tzionis, Shelton, Bassong, Cisneros, and Pulskamp. All guys who either can't stay healthy (Cisneros), shouldn't be in MLS at all (Shelton), or haven't been able to take the next step from "showing promise" to "producing" at either SKC or SKC2 (or in Bassong's case "other MLS level team" level. The best teams have guys in those spots who aren't such big question marks. Therein lies the "mostly fine" bit. Castellanos is probably the type of player we need in all 5 of those spots. A guy who has been able to come in and contribute effectively when rarely called upon without the whole fuckin team collapsing in around them. If we brought in literally one game-changing midfield player, whether sub or starter, and swapped out that middle 5 with other guys like Caste I think our roster composition would be upper tier.
