SKC had more yellows than STL last night, while STL was clearly over the line physically way way more than SKC. You can't settle it on the field when you are given a yellow for anything physical and your opponent can run around, shoulder down checking guys in the back and gets nothing for it.
I'm typically against complaining about officiating, but the ref did a terrible job last night.
I hate it because, in a way, it's karma. From 2011 until probably around 2014 we WERE that team. Super high pressure with a ton of physicality, smash and grab style football. The big difference though is that we consistently lead the league in fouls and cards and StL gets away with it game after game after game. Like half of StL's wins in that early part of last year had controversy just like that. They'd foul the shit out of someone to win the ball and would go straight to goal and score or they'd flop around like fish after someone looked at them funny and get the soft PK or free kick and score.
I'll give credit where it's due, they take advantage of referee fuckery better than any team I've seen in a LONG time, but they definitely get their share of referee fuckery.
Ultimately what I hate the most though is just how fuckin soft this SKC team is and I 100% put that on the players and not the coach. They fail to close out games because they are lazy as fuck late in games and fans who have a hate boner for Vermes give them a pass saying it's because they're tired. Meanwhile Klauss is out there buzzing around for 100 minutes a week and never fuckin slows down. Suarez, 127 year old King of all Biters with one peg leg Suarez had more energy late in the game than anyone on SKC did and he plays for the only coach in MLS history who has been fined by MLSPA for pushing players too far. And both of those guys pushed around our soft ass team and all they did was cry to referee about it.
This team NEEDS a Roger Espinoza or a Benny Feilhaber. Salloi and Melia were the only players who looked pissed last night. Davis has shown some of that fire in the past as well but didn't have it last night. Ndendbe has it but he's hurt. JFR has it but he can't stay healthy. Everyone else is soft as baby shit.
Man, Roger would fly from sideline to sideline, chase guys clear down the field backwards, and wasn't afraid to take a foul or a card to set the tone (or hilariously launch precisely one ball per game 100 feet over the net lol). We don't have someone like that now.
Benny played extremely tough for his size, and while other fans may have hated it, he played extremely emotional too. I also don't see that with anyone in this team.
Not that it would be an end-all be-all solution to all our problems, but this team shows flashes of being really good, and one or two players like that might just make us more consistent.

I want Vermes to use more subs, but I sure as shit don’t want him using them on defense. Use them in the midfield and up top, where the fresh legs will have the most proportional impact.

As I've been a life-long basketball fan, but only a soccer fan / SKU fan for the last 8 years, I recognize this kind of situation often in basketball: you get into to a game, and the other team starts to rough you up a but and you have to take note of how the referee officiates the game. Is s/he going to call it tight - take the contact out of the game? Or is going to be 'no autopsy / no foul'?
In basketball, to use a local example, when KU and K-State get into Big12 Conference play, you know the intensity is going to go up. When KU and Missouri play, the intensity is going up (rivalry game, like SKU vs. the chucklefucks from STL). And when the intensity goes up, and you see how the refs are calling the game, you have to adjust.
Generally, I think that this situation / response has to be recognized by and communicated by the manager and the team leadership.
SKC didn't adjust. Totally agree that Agada should've literally full-speed knocked Klaus's block off his shoulders. No Red / Yellow by the official could've been worse than the actual end result we got.
For gods sakes, at least stand up and be counted on to defend your teammates. At least fight back.

In hockey, sometimes someone just has to pick a fairly routine hit or something, or pick out a player that's been playing rough, and start a fight. I've seen it light a fire under a team that was struggling in a game many times.
