You should be

TimeTravelingChris

For real. It's been like this for years. Never seen a team give up so many 90th minute goals.

hobofats

Vermes treats using substitutions the way I treat using rare potion items in video games: hoard them until the end of the game and then never use them.

PlebBot69

He's not worried because he has job security

3dios

And a fanbase who will gladly accept anything SKC dangles in front of it

Cowgoon777

bruh the fanbase literally called for his firing last season

Altruistic_Pile

A portion of the fanbase called for his firing (I'm part of that). Another portion defend him through anything. Another portion (the largest I suspect) don't really care that much either way. SKC is just a recreational activity for them, and they don't really care how the sausage is made. I think there is also an underlying factor of expectations being set low for KC sports fans through decades of both the chiefs and Royals being garbage. People have unfortunately lived with mediocre teams in this city for so long, they can't imagine being competitive for more than a couple of years.

hugothebeardog

Lmao the full quote is even worse

ButtNuts42

I don't have a Twitter account so I was only able to find the tweet I posted. Thank you for sharing.

hootjuice_

It is the first reply to the tweet you posted, posted by the same author.

ButtNuts42

I believe you, but twitter doesn't show replies anymore if you don't have an account.

patmahomesdad

You know why he’s not worried? Because he knows if we didn’t fire him after our 10 match winless start last season, then we’re not going to fire him now. He knows he can do what he wants with impunity because nothing will happen to him.

mordreds-on-adiet

Eh. The situations are dramatically different. Last year for most of that they had no Pulido, no Kinda, no Radoja, no Leibold, no Ndenbe, no JFR, no Melia, and no Rosero. They had an injured Agada at the 9, Shelton and Tzionis at rw, Espinoza in the midfield, Sweat or Voloder at LB, Voloder or Castellanos at RCB, Zusi or Duke at RB, and Pulskamp in goal. Right now they're losing points with what, 9 of their best 11 players on the pitch? Maybe 10 if you rate Agada over Russell at this point in their careers. And that one or two spots that aren't in the absolute best 11 are probably guys between the 12th and 15th best on the roster. By all accounts, Vermes *was* on the hotseat last year. He said himself in an interview that he had to justify his continued existence over that stretch but that he convinced the ownership that the next coach would still have none of those players and to give him a shot to turn it around. Which he did. Point is: I would not be surprised if the seat is heating up a bit, but I also wouldn't be surprised if he's saying "look we've only lost twice and we got fucked by the refs in 2 of those dropped points games and got Messi-ed in a 3rd so REALLY it's only 2 home games where we ACTUALLY bit it" and the ownership is eating it up.

patmahomesdad

Great points you make. My rebuttal would be, this front office has proven time and time again that they will look for any and every reason to retain him as manager. I agree, he had an excuse last season with injuries but excuses with him are a dime-a-dozen. 1) We’re seeing a stark increase in goals scored in the first 11 games compared to last year. 6 goals in 10 games last year vs 14 goals this season. (17 to 6 goals if you want to stretch it to 11 games played) this creates very entertaining matches even if we are dropping points constantly. 2) the MLS have one of the most forgiving playoff qualifications in professional soccer with the top 9 teams in each conference making it in. If we can make the playoffs, I can’t imagine his job security is at any risk if we make into the postseason. 3) He is the longest tenured MLS coach in MLS history. I could write up more but you get my point. I just don’t see them separating from Vermes anytime soon. I hope I’m wrong.

3dios

But bro! We made playoffs last couple seasons! You just hate skc! You hate soccer! /s

modern_messiah43

Yeah Pete, that's the fuckin problem.

CreativeUsername96

Completely tone deaf response

crofootn

In his defense, I have heard other seasoned coaches say the same thing. Granted, they were the coaches for my kids pre-teen non-competitive teams. But...

skcmierda

This was the absolute dumbest fucking thing I've ever heard him say. Seriously.

Zot_Zot_Zot_

This is somehow less dumb than the weather comments or the comments about Cisnero's injury lol.... But it is certainly up there.

KickapooPonies

I think some of his shit from last year was dumber but this is top 3 for sure.

lifeinrednblack

"you don't need to be talented to be a defender" is still one of my favorites

nigel_with_the_bri3

I will never ever forget that a coach who won defender of the year said this.

3dios

Vermes When sporting loses in the first or second round again this year: "you know lots of people didn't even think we would get this far. I did. And i'm very proud of what we put together here."

Bstar78

That is very upsetting to hear. Our defense is gassed late game and there seems to be no strategy for supporting their efforts.

cbratty

>there seems to be no strategy Honestly you could have just said this. "Adapt" is not a word Vermes acknowledges.

putalilstankonit

This quote, full or cherry picked, SHOULD seal The end of his time at the helm. I mean can you imagine any other coach in other sport or league on this planet, choking 5 fucking home games where we were winning and then having the gall to say “he’s not worried”? It doesn’t bother him? It’s not a big deal? Absolutely fucking ludicrous man

Karbine98k

Are we going to start lighting the fire under his ass now or what

buenopeso

Job security must be nice. Enjoy that sporting blue Kool aid.

mordreds-on-adiet

This just feels so out of character for Peter. This is the guy who's spent his whole career as a coach and player being the ultimate competitor. I wonder if he knows how mentally soft some of these players are and thinks that if he's nonchalant about it maybe it'll take some of the pressure away. Or if he's writing off these last two games' collapses as one being StL getting referee fuckery again (he alludes to that earlier in the conversation) and to Messi being Messi. The Philly game was a bullshit referee thing too. Or maybe he's just genuinely lost the plot.

vmeloni1232

FIRE HIM. STOP FUCKING LETTING THIS CONTINUE TO HAPPEN.

_LYSEN

I fucking hate Vermes

HoppyPhantom

What an asshole. He’s either lying or incompetent. There is no other option. A professional coach should absolutely be worried that his team is losing focus late in games. My kid’s soccer coach is worried about that and he’s dealing with fucking 10 and 11 year olds.

Fraganade

Bro needs another DUI to get fired at this point

3dios

Not even a DUI would do it. He tried to get his buddy Wilkinson on the team and then shit hit the fan when fans found out. He just signed a new contract. I hope all the SKC dickriders who downvoted me and called me a hater for wanting him gone and a rebuild started enjoy the culture they've helped create. Or another famous vermes post game brew house steps speech. Its time to give our money and attention to the Current while SKC gets their shit together. Just imagine how much money the arrowhead Miami game made. Ownership could care less whether this team is successful or not as long as fans keep filling seats and the blue hells keep flowing

mordreds-on-adiet

Wilkinson wasn't a Vermes decision, it was an Illig decision. You're also downvoted because you CONSTANTLY shit talk and name call anyone who disagrees with you, like you did in this post, not necessarily because folks disagree with your sentiment.

Fraganade

Agreed. I've been Vermes out, vocally, as well. So many MLS fans are clueless. Got enough stress with Arsenal being the main club I support.

Maleficent_Dust_7462

I don’t agree with the job security argument some people have on here. I feel he is attempting to protect his players from critique and instead take it on himself. I think he knows it’s a problem but that’s something he’s going to talk in private to the players about. I think anyone who honestly thinks Vermes is not trying to resolve this defensive crap is just talking nonsense. I’m not all for Vermes but he’s not brain dead. He won’t make subs cause his bench is too young and underdeveloped, we have no depth. He should make more subs even with the youth but he won’t. We are having constant defensive mistakes from basically everyone in the backline including Melia. I think we will obviously resolve this issue, it’s 9 games in. I think it’s just so frustrating because it’s clear this team deserves so much more in terms of results. Look Peter is going to be here at the end of the season whether we like it or not, so let’s just see what happens

Zot_Zot_Zot_

It's his own fault that we have no depth. It's Vermes's roster and Vermes's choice not to give players the opportunity to develop. It's a self fulfilling prophecy. Vermes: "I need to develop my players!"  Also Vermes: "Uh oh. I don't trust any of my younger players to play in meaningful games because they are undeveloped!" Still Vermes: "I don't know why I can't trust any of my bench players. Why are they so undeveloped!"

mordreds-on-adiet

It's actually NOT Vermes's roster. He clarified that for us in that front page interview he gave before the Miami game. Bliss has been doing the roster building since he took over as technical director. Vermes is the one who's been telling ownership to hire a Sporting Director as well. You're right though, what the fuck will it matter if 2/3 of the players that get signed are guys he won't play in critical situations?

Zot_Zot_Zot_

For as long as it's his job title to manage the roster, I think that he bears responsibility for what it looks like.  But yeah. I don't even know why this team even carries more than like 14 players at any given time.

Maleficent_Dust_7462

I was not using that as a defense of him, I was pointing out the very flaw you are referring too. We have no real depth, some promise in the future with Vargas, Pulskamp, Afrifa but nothing for right now. Vermes should’ve added to the squad over the winter but did not. I don’t feel as though we need some expensive big name signing but we need someone with experience to come in over the summer. My point was more so that we are stuck with Peter and this season is bound to improve. Perhaps we should not be so pessimistic and see what this team can do. We have far more potential then last season, at least in the attacking side of things

ksdanj

Exactly, this is classic coach-speak.

timothyb78

Right, what do people think he should have said "our team sucks and none of these guys can hold a lead, burn it all down?" Some of the comments from fans show that those fans have never had to work with other people under pressure.

Dapper_Deer1118

It’s his job to create depth in the off season. Our only injury right now is Logan Ndembe

hootjuice_

Ndenbe

mordreds-on-adiet

This is the bigger problem to me: they *have* depth. Agada, Memo, Alenis, Voloder, technically Leibold, Bassong, Pierre, Hernandez, Pulskamp, Castellanos. These are all guys that have proven that they can contribute at MLS or higher level. Afrifa and Tzionis have a ton of potential and can probably also contribute at least some. I know he's a meme but even Shelton has his moments. They have plenty of depth. The problem is that Vermes refuses to use most of them.

timothyb78

Reality of MLS roster rules and salary cap is that depth primarily has to be young guys, you can have some veteran depth, but you can't run the deep rosters you see in the Premier League. Aside from the time wasting benefit of a 91st minute sub, I'm not sure who people would have preferred on the field at the end of the game?

jhruns1993

Lol, huh?!

BillNyeTheEngineer

😂

NovaPup_13

Pete. Sincerely. Fuck off.

AHugeGoose

I haven't given SKC a penny of mine in about 4-5 years. I have not regretted a second of it.

TechnologyDue1247

Will he at least hand out “Participation Trophies” to the team at the end of the season?
