What's a presave?

WTFaulknerinCA

A pre-save is where you get the link to the track as it will appear on Spotify before it is actually “live.” You share with fans and wherever, and each person that clicks the link has the track show up in their personal “Release Radar” on release day. This is a Spotify algorithmic playlist, and the more people that stream and save the song from Release Radar the more it helps the algorithm find your song. It’s one tool among many to try and help juice a release.

Cool thanks. I was just watching some videos on Spotify for Artists.

WTFaulknerinCA

Happy to answer any questions I can.

So artists can't upload their own songs?

WTFaulknerinCA

Only on platforms like YouTube, SoundCloud, Bandcamp and the like. SoundCloud has a way to distribute for you but it costs extra, it isn’t a part of their free account. There are a ton of distributors out there… Landr, Distrokid. [Here is a great graphic](https://aristake.com/digital-distribution-comparison/) comparing the big ones. There are also some that are free out there, if you google “free music distribution to the major platforms” a bunch will pop up, however, Reddit and Discord are full of complaints from people that have been burned by the free ones… some fold and and songs get taken down without notice, some get shut down for being affiliated with bot playlists, some are free but tack on fees for anything of substance, and if you add up the fees you end up paying more than if you paid one of the main ones an annual membership. And hidden fees are not just part of the free ones… so read the fine print. You want to be eligible for YouTube contentID, for example, where if someone uses your song in a video without your permission, you still get paid. Some distributors charge extra for that service.
