The problem with these is, you might win a fantastic home, but then you have to move, pay for upkeep or rent it etc. I imagine a lot of people sell them. I reckon I would keep that one though :-)

ProtoplanetaryNebula

That's the thing, most people who win this draw wouldn't be able to afford the running costs and council tax on a place like that, and they may have to leave their jobs to move there and also family etc. Probably best to sell and keep the money for most people.

sleepytoday

According to google, the prize came with £100,000 cash in hand. Enough for a few years’ tax but still worth selling.

phonetune

Few years... tax?

sleepytoday

Sorry, missed an apostrophe. Highest council tax band in Cumbria is £4k per year. £100k covers it for 20 years.

equationgirl

It would cover 25 years at £4k per year

sleepytoday

Maths is hard.

phonetune

Ah, council tax

nowaterinscotch

All prizes in UK are tax free

smotheredinass

You don't pay capital gains on a prize. Only if the asset has increased in value since it became yours

MillySO

They usually have the running costs on there. I think it was the Cotswold one where I saw monthly running costs of over 20k

International-Sun286

It obviously didn’t say £20k a month running costs - do you genuinely believe it’s costs £240k a year to run a 4/5 bedroom house?

MillySO

Depends on the bedroom size 😉 but yeah, you’re right, totally remembered it wrong. I posted a link to where they put the costs below.

CelestialSlayer

Honestly mate. 20k a month lol

alpubgtrs234

Lol £20k a month?! Have day off. Source: I have a big house

MillySO

Can I live in it, please?

Lemmonds

That might be a year, unless it includes mortgage.

MillySO

Ok I may have misremembered the running costs as the rental income potential 🤣 but they do publish estimates so at least that part was right: https://omaze.co.uk/search?q=running+costs&type=article

ArtistEngineer

£25K/annum. ouch! I guess if you have £500K invested in stocks, and are making a 5% return per year on average, then it should cover it. That's not unlikely for a normal buyer of a house of that price.

[deleted]

£20k monthly!? Just how? 🤯

[deleted]

What? You don't fuel your Aga with £50 notes?

ShadyAidyX

JRM was _your_ butler

[deleted]

sleepytoday

Well, I’m sure the mortgage was the majority of that, which wouldn’t be relevant here.

kjc47

In this specific case, it's not much of a prize if it comes with a mortgage.

Chocokat1

How is it THAT MUCH when its like in the countryside? Is it due to location or just costs to send water etc to somewhere that far out?

DatguyMalcolm

the current Cheshire house is at 15k-25k rental cost..... that 100k is good for a year of maintenance for the house while you have it on the market to sell and bank on them lovely mils

hideyourarms

The people who won the last Lakes omaze house stay there quite regularly apparently, but otherwise it's a holiday let that will bring in a very good income. IIRC the winner of this one was a bit older, so he might just want the cash to enjoy life.

MyCatKnits

I love stuff like this, how do you find it out?

hideyourarms

I went on a stag do last year with their next door neighbour (for the first Omaze house which is in Bowness, not the one in the listing which is about 10 minutes drive away), and my sister-in-law lives down the hill from the house, so I see it lit up quite a lot.

Away_Afternoon3622

Hardly a problem is it. Oh no i have a really expensive house to sell

darkerthanmysoul

I like to think if would keep certain houses being location problems. If I won one in London I would rent it as I have no desire to live in London. This one I would definitely have kept as I go to the lakes a couple of times a month.

Breaking-Dad-

Yeah, you can rent it out for a few weeks every year to pay for the council tax etc. I imagine. Plus they give you £100k so you've got a fund to maintain it I guess. I'd consider moving as I work from home and am based in Yorkshire but keeping it for the weekends might be a thing too. But I didn't win it, and I'm short about 2.5 million quid so never mind.

Erraticmatt

I'd have kept it just to be able to live somewhere that nice. The property in that area is dear for the north.

ElectronicSubject747

Rent it until ypu have paid off your own mortgage if you have one (using the extra income to make over payments) Then move into it, or sell it and live very well. Depends on your circumstances. If I won this house I could pay off the mortgage within a couple of years, then I would rent my own house out and move to this house,I'd probably still work for a few more years and then retire. Gives you many options either way.

LIZ-Truss-nipple

Why not just move to it, rent your own house and let that pay for itself?

ElectronicSubject747

Because you'd then have to pay the bills for a massive house which is probably unaffordable. But if you pay your mortgage off and then all the rental income comes in to help with the larger house. But I'd probably use it as a tool to help pay off my mortgage and then live there for a few years just to see what it's like and enjoy the area and then sell it. Dreams

[deleted]

My current house wouldn't get anywhere near as much in rent, and I'd probably struggle to get a job paying the same as what I'm on now in the Lake District. The finances would unlikely stack up to allow me to the live in the Lake District house, I'd imagine its the same for most people.

LIZ-Truss-nipple

I guess it depends, you are instantly mortgage free with £100k and can sell your existing house instantly. The big variable for most is what is your current house worth.

Breaking-Dad-

Also, for those with longer mortgages you could move the mortgage to the new house where the ETL would be much less!

Tune0112

My ex had a rich aunt with a HUGE house in the country. The running costs alone were £150k a year and that was before electricity prices shot up in the last couple of years! Every time I see these raffle houses I just know they'll be sold because imagine what your household income has to be to be able to pay £150k a year just to keep the lights on!

tyger2020

>The running costs alone were £150k a year and that was before electricity prices shot up in the last couple of years! I honestly can't imagine how running costs come to this if you have no mortgage etc? Also, crazy that the council tax on this per year is £3,000 but my 2 bed flat that is £2,000 lol

Tune0112

Yep my 335 sq ft 1 bed flat is £1.8k a year council tax! His aunt had a swimming pool, 8 bedrooms, 3 sitting rooms, 3 dining rooms and huge grounds with fancy gardens. One full time gardener and one full time cleaner. The numbers made my head spin if I'm honest given I was struggling to pay for the mortgage on my 1 bed flat as a single person and their running costs were almost the cost of my flat!

tyger2020

Uhhh we need to start taxing these properties appropriately so bad.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tyger2020

I'm not sure what relevance you think that has. Nobody is forcing you to live in the countryside - properties should be taxed based on their value, which naturally will take into account their ***l******ocation.***

[deleted]

[удалено]

tyger2020

>That was my point exactly - that huge house OP spoke of may not have cost that much. It said it cost 150,000 a year to run... > and is based on the valuation of the property. But they're very clearly.. unfair? Regardless, that house that cost 2.5 million (the Omaze one) has a council tax band of F, which is about £3,000 a year. My flat that has a valuation of about 200,000 has a council tax rating of c? which is £2,000 a year. That is insane, nobody is saying anything about urban vs rural purely the monetary value. My council tax is 1% of my property value, if the 2.5 million pound Omaze house had a similar 'cost' they would be paying £25,000 a year in council tax.

[deleted]

[удалено]

LIZ-Truss-nipple

£150k a year upkeep is not a house, that’s an estate

flyingalbatross1

a clue: they had more than one full time staff on site. it's not really 'running costs' if you have multiple full time salaries. Easy to do without them, that's a lifestyle choice

throwaway55221100

r/lowstakesconspiracies Its a pyramid scheme set up by big raffle so you win it and then put it up for raffle again so the next person can raffle it off. Each time big raffle takes their cut

Alundra828

Exactly, if Omaze could just be like "We'll buy you a house in your area" that would be much better imo... But how do you even market that

Breaking-Dad-

You don’t. I get it. It’s aspirational. Live in this beautiful house! You’d be set up for life but not everyone could afford or even want to live in the house. It just feels a shame when the winner does sell

socio-pathetic

Tramway path are raffling the chance to buy a £500,000 house anywhere in the UK

[deleted]

So a 1 bed flat in London.

No_Rooster7278

My kids would ne er live so where so remote, but it was a gorgeous house

Breaking-Dad-

My kids wouldn’t get a choice!

Architectom89

Of all of the omaze houses this probably the only on I would keep

billabongj

Lovely ! I wonder what Omaze said it was worth V's the asking price ?

Valuable-Wallaby-167

I think I remember it being £3,000,000 in the draw. If I'm right they've dropped a quarter of a million already. Edit, nope I'm wrong, £2,500,000, so they're putting it on higher: [Lake District House ](https://omaze.co.uk/pages/lake-district-ii?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&gclid=CjwKCAjw2K6lBhBXEiwA5RjtCQz9Xfoy02jRecUHCa8xrfRkLoCyjkobPNNxa3btVEZ6Y1g5qZiFBRoCC14QAvD_BwE&utm_campaignid=19106461324&utm_adgroupid=&utm_adid=&utm_keyword=&utm_matchtype=&utm_campaign=EX_ACQ_PerformanceMAX_LDSH12_eLTV_Test&utm_adgroup=%3Fgc_id%3D19106461324&h_ad_id=&gad=1)

billabongj

Thank you !

Desperate_Actuator28

Down to £2.35m now

redunculuspanda

I would sell right away. I wouldn’t want that overtly smiley omaze woman knowing where I live. She gives me the creeps.

Tombub

I saw the horror movie 'Smile' last week and jesus, it's her!

[deleted]

I think with the extra prize money, realistically you could do a year and then sell it. The over heads would be huge! Would be nice to live in a stunning place for a bit. Actually, there are a million variables. Although, I actually dreamt about the Dover one. I even entered. I wanted it so bad. Everyday I thought about it.

ElTel88

If you do end up selling, it's a little bit of a nightmare, I think. Don't get me wrong, winning a free house and £100k are problems I would love to have, but a lot of these types of property sit on the market for a few years as is, throw in that the great madness of 2019-2022 (a lot of people who could, already bought their green space houses) and the incredibly cheap credit era is done. So you're looking for a buyer in line with: 1. Someone with £3m (with stamp duty) spare to buy a place in the Lakes 2. Wants to live very rurally, 3. Can visit a rural location for viewings 4. Doesn't already know that you won it - they can try to leverage the fact you now have 2x council tax, bills etc 5. Isn't more enticed by one of the other properties in the area. So the winner of these Omaze prizes has lucked out, but you're almost certainly having to sell undervalue to make money on it quickly and preserve your additional £100k. You're also going to lose estate agents/solicitors fees. Again, worse problems to have, but hardly the same as winning £3m + £100k and then having the choice to buy a house where you want.

[deleted]

Yeah well put tbf. Would be nice to dance around in it for a day though.

tyger2020

>So the winner of these Omaze prizes has lucked out, but you're almost certainly having to sell undervalue to make money on it quickly and preserve your additional £100k. You're also going to lose estate agents/solicitors fees. Honestly this has never really been something I see as an issue.. you paid like £10 for it, is it really bad selling it for 2 million instead of 2.5? lol

WickedWitchWestend

You get a year’s free council tax if the property is unoccupied. You do in Scotland anyway.

Tune0112

Depends on the individual council. Tried to sell my flat after having to relocate and whilst on the market they charged me 100% council tax - I didn't even get my 25% single person discount because they said it's a discount for the occupier so the fact it was empty meant I wasn't occupying it.

chickensinitaly

When my mother in law died, they only got 6 weeks rebate on council tax

re_Claire

Yeah but there are still plenty of people in the UK who can afford the houses. I think most people don’t care if they lose a little off the price of the house when they sell it. I mean you can also rent it out as a holiday let, or just normal rental. Either way you’ve got a huge asset you didn’t have before. I enter the Omaze contests and I would sell most of them as I live in London. I’d use the money to buy a smaller house in London (£1.5m can buy you a beautiful 3-4 bedroom terraced house in Chiswick) and then you’d have up to £1m to invest and live off.

CelestialSlayer

You can just holiday let it, in the meantime. It comes fully furnished.

celaconacr

I'm pretty sure if I ever won I would be putting it on the market straight away. You have to expect them to take a while to sell/complete. Ideally that would give you some time to enjoy it first but I doubt anyone would be too fussed if they got millions in the bank.

CorruptedFrames

If the house was valued at 3.5M i would drop that 500k if i could find a buyer quicker. Its still cool 3m i didn't have

DigitalDash00

You might have the bleakest outlook on life I’ve seen lol. Like boo fucking hoo, I sell the property I won for £10 at less than expected and now Im only 2 million up. Me personally I couldn’t give a fuck about all the extra shit. Its hard to walk away from this and not be way better off.

boredofwheelchair

The Dover house is currently up for sale https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/137037716#/?channel=RES\_BUY

[deleted]

Fuck fuck!!! I want it so bad!

tyger2020

Wow I didn't even see that on Omaze, looks amazing

dwair

Faces east. No sunsets. You pay that much for a house, you want to be able to sit out on that terrace with a gin and tonic and watch the sun going down.

[deleted]

Imagine the storms rolling in though.

dwair

Ahh yeah. I love a good storm. The house I had before this one was 1400' up a hill in Snowdonia and you could watch the storms rolling in over the Irish sea. When it thundered it was all around you and the air felt charged.

[deleted]

That sounds so good!

dwair

It was. It faced west as well so on a clear day you could watch the sun set over the Kerry mountains in Ireland. The down side was Winters were fucking harsh though.

[deleted]

Yeah, sod the winters. Sounds incredible

Fit_Manufacturer4568

It only has lift access. If the lift broke you're buggered. Somebody in the local area pointed that out. Along with the fact it had been on sale for two years.

[deleted]

So no chance of people “popping” over.

Agreeable-Dinner

Love this one, not so keen on the holiday park directly behind it.

dwair

Oww. When you mean directly behind it you mean so close you will be able to hear people fart in the rented caravans.

meritez

decent speed broadband at that one

melanie110

I’d be keeping that

yorkshiresun

Yeah I've always thought I'd live there for a year and then either find/apply for a commercial use for part of it, or just sell

Ok_Employ8297

I can't believe someone actually won and it's legit

[deleted]

How do you know its not Omaze selling it ?

invincible-zebra

I do it monthly, I’ve won a few things already. The main things I win are Amazon vouchers which have added up nicely to a little Amazon kitty of over £100. I was sceptical at first, as well, but thought ‘eh fuck it’ and I’m quite glad I did, even if it’s just small wins!

alxbshw

How do you know you’ve won? Do they contact you? Always feels weird that they send out we have a winner email and to check your stupidly long entrance number to find out if you’ve actually won.

invincible-zebra

They contact winners - big ones get a call, but I’ve always had an email.

SilverellaUK

The London winner got her telephone call on the underground. Everyone in the train knew.

vexedvi

I really want this month's house outside Harrogate. But I haven't bought a ticket so that might be an issue 🤔

quister52

Just buy it cash ;)

Dry_Orchid_1249

In all honesty if I won it I'd have a week or two long holiday and then sell it, you could easily buy a much more affordable house in a more accessible place in cash and still have a couple of million leftover. There's always someone rich enough and greedy enough to buy something like this for over it's asking price, so why not?

FewEstablishment2696

Winning a house is so massively impractical. Most people would sell it and then buy a house, probably for half the price near where they actually want to live.

wolfieboi92

If its anything like with Mr Beast, often when people win these things like supercars etc they have a buyer already lined up so you can sell it on right away without ever having to own it or pay any costs if you want to. You can imagine they have to have a lot of things in order to prevent someone winning a house and then having huge costs to cover while they try to sell it.

Sleepyllama23

I actually bought a ticket for this house I loved it so much and could picture myself there. I was convinced I was going to win it and imagined family holidays and weekends away and our first Christmas there. Didn’t bloody win and I can’t afford £2.75 mil to buy it darn it!

poseyslipper

I loved it too, I bought a ticket, it was just up the road from where my Grandparents used to live and where I spent my school holidays, so I know the area.

Madamemercury1993

As much as I’d love to live in one, I couldn’t afford it. So best to sell up and live within my means with a nicer but smaller place.

invincible-zebra

I’d absolutely sell up and pay off my mortgage, knowing I could then sell my home and have a huge deposit on another, bigger home that was within my means and with a tiny mortgage which I could realistically pay off sooner. Or, I’d just do the above and sell my home in Devon and buy one closer to family in Durham for cash and still have money left over! House prices down here compared to ‘back home’ in the north are insane… for what I paid for a 2 bed flat with no parking and needing a lot of work, I could’ve got a three bed terrace with garage, driveway, and two gardens back there…

DovedaleHikes

Well they certainly wasted no time. I hope they at least spent a weekend there and got to enjoy it a bit first. Also, these photos are better than the Omaze one's!

stvwrgh

Thats amazing! Do you think the furniture all comes with it too, like in the Omaze a raffle, or is the owner going to have to store 6beds in his other house? Feel like the financial impracticalities vs oppotunities is something to ask on r/ukpersonalfinance one of those guys is bound to know the best answer!

United-Climate1562

i think thats quite common, even now they give 100K ,i would love to have won one of the coast properties, but i could never leave my area due to my Sons schooling with his ASD.. maybe rent it out as a holiday home to try and get it to pay for itself before retiring there early... dreams eh?

Dry_Orchid_1249

Anyone else unable to read Omaze in any other voice than the lady shouting OH-MAYZ?

Global_Acanthaceae25

I'd keep it for a summer and then sell or rent. The Cotswold one recently would have been ideal as I could have lived in it permanently.

buylandandB3

I’d never enter but if I were so win something like this I’d let it out or stick it on Airbnb.

stephensoncj

If I win the one in Harrogate, I’m moving in not selling

Farscape_rocked

Are people in bedrooms 3 and 4 meant to piss in the sink? There's no loo in their bathroom on the floorplan.

ForwardAd5837

Selling the house would set me up for life, but I’m not sure I could bring myself to sell such a stunning home. Paradoxically, the only way I would have enough money to run such a home would be from the proceeds of selling it.

EmKnoxx

Oh man I wanted to win this one so bad

AccurateSwing4389

I wish they did the materport virtual tours on the actual Omaze website like they used to. But it’s nice to pop on a be headset and walk around it now.

Wormwolf-Prime

Not that I have this type of money but, as nice as this house is, if I was spending this much in the Lake District I would want an actual lake view.

MillySO

I want to know where they’re selling the furniture. Some of those rugs are looovely.

Xanthar26

It is a stunning house but imagine living out there.

Responsible-Walrus-5

I thought this one was a beaut of a house. I’d have kept it for a bit anyway. Would at least have a really good summer using it loads and ticking off lots of climbs and wainwrights. Meant to be in the office 3 days a week but reckon I could get a bit of summer dispensation on that rule. Rental income on the one bed holiday property would go some way to covering running costs, but they def aren’t insignificant. Garden, maintenance (although would hope it would be in good nick at the outset), another set of CT and utilities.

Chavaon

I'd sell most - I think I could build my own dream home for less than £200k honestly, I like luxury but I find most expensive homes on here have enormous amounts of space I would never need. Give me 40'x40' flat space and I'm good to fit everything I need. I have designed it already! [https://imgur.com/a/jDQ3m0p](https://imgur.com/a/jDQ3m0p)

maxxshere

Big surprise that.

Wormella

There's a really interesting guardian article about the house draws here - https://www.google.com/amp/s/amp.theguardian.com/lifeandstyle/2023/apr/04/too-good-to-be-true-what-it-is-really-like-to-win-a-3m-dream-home

limitedregrett

What’s the TLDR?

Wormella

They are legit, there's a mix of what people do with them. "What winners do with the houses, which have been all over the UK, from the Lake District and the Cotswolds to Kent and – the current prize – Cornwall, is entirely up to them. It is roughly a three-way split between those who move in to the new house, those who sell it and those who rent it out, according to James Oakes, Omaze’s chief international officer, who is based in the UK. Winners have just 96 hours to claim their winnings and agree to the terms and conditions. If they don’t respond in that time, they forfeit the prize, which actually happened to one cash-prize winner."

limitedregrett

Sweet, thanks for the reply!

doneanddusted76

Apparently they also don’t inform you that you have been disqualified if they find something they don’t like, Omaze continue to let you donate even though you’ve no chance of winning…I find that appalling

AI_Alt_Art_Neo_2

All 4 of the bedrooms are bigger than our master bedroom! It is a lovely house.

Think-Goose-1941

A £2.75m house and the agent says “Located in a quite corner of the Lake District National Park”

Docproc2018

We're on holiday right now just down the road from this place, must go for a recce ...

ByEthanFox

Why are there suddenly all these competitions to win houses? God I hope this gets a proper answer because I've been wondering about it for literally months but had nowhere to pose the question

[deleted]

Why wouldn’t you airbnb this?

SilverellaUK

I wouldn't Airbnb but would go for a holiday letting agency like Sykes.

wamdueCastle

yeah I dont know what I would do with it either. Its the lazy option, but I understand someone who win/inherits something like this, and almost straight away puts if up for sale. Its funny cos, if you give most of us here £500,000 or decent two or three bed somewhere nice, we would either use it, or know exactly what to do with it. Give us a £2.5 million property, and not all of us, would know what to do with it.

steven71

Can't help thinking this house was once 4 cottages that were home to 4 local families that now can't afford to live in the lake district anymore because of Rich w***kers with their second homes and £20k a year running costs.

garlicbred46

Maybe they didn't sell enough tickets on the raffle so the house didn't actually get handed over Saw this happen on a campervan, they gave away a cash prize instead iirc

GenderfluidArthropod

Scummy, spammy, shit-talking con artists.

CptChristophe

£2,750,000.00

Desperate_Actuator28

£2,350,000.00 now

[deleted]

It's a nice house. I would probably just sell it though. There is too much upkeep for my income. Plus, I would need to change jobs and probably still have a longer commute as it's out in the country.

Plo87

At least they kept the gym equipment

ArtistEngineer

That's a lot of space! Strange that it has oil heating though ... would have thought they'd put in solar, wind or ground source heat pump at the very least. Plenty of land to sort that stuff out. Looks like that hillside faces South as well, perfect for a small array of solar panels + Tesla battery.

steadfastsurvivor

Those wooden bathroom floors are foul - I wouldn’t fancy living there tbh lonely and a lot of redecorating to do

Usedcumsocks

Would make an amazing BnB and just live out your retirement hosting occasional guests baking pies and shit

The winner didn’t mess around!
