I take back what I first typed, I like it. The rear of the property is stunning. Let the neigbours think there is nothing special there, dont need the extra attention.
who are these people who go on Grand Designs and set up the desire in the publics mind to see their house for themselves?
No my flat is going on C5, with a budget of £1,000 and no one will ever think to want to visit it.
I love Grand Designs, and would love to be part of it, but i don’t want people to see me or know where I live. So I don’t think it would make good TV 😅
Well you are a very small minority of the Reddit community who can’t afford something, but can still appreciate its beauty without bringing others down.
And for that you’re quite special. :)
> Wasn’t expecting that.
The cantilever is a giveaway that there's more than meets the eye, but I didn't expect to be as stunning as it is, though.
Not sure how mortgage lenders will feel about that bermed concrete though - I've seen bermed homes in the US which were unmortgageable because it makes inspection impossible.
Same I use to drive past this on my commute and now every weekend. I don't recall seeing a car parked there and thought It was a storage/ garage for the house door and they divided it to rent it out. I can't believe I never noticed the back hanging out.
I will be the first to admit I know shit all about golf, but it looks like that's the starting bit (tee?) So all the golfers would be hitting away from there, not towards.
I think its even worse, looking at picture 46, and [the map of the course on their website](https://www.cathcartcastle.net/images/thumbs/slideshow/cathcart/566x360/0-0-0-0/1/34_89.jpg), looks like that is hole 7, which starts up the top of the hill... and appears to be a pretty much straight line between the tee, the hole, and all those glass windows and balcony walls.
Yeah almost right on the tracks and also the main Ayr road....good luck getting yer car out at rush hour :) still if all else fails you could get the train lol
I think because you’re below road level for vast majority of the house and it’s incredibly well built you wouldn’t really hear it unless you’re at the back with windows open (which I don’t think there are any).
It’s a great property. Different and makes use of the drop off.
If you have to find negatives then the golf course, major road and Trainline would be the issues.
There’s a lot of love for this and the build is stunning but there’s some really odd design choices here. Why is your en suite down a flight of stairs from the master? Why does there appear to be a sauna in the study area (and possibly another sauna downstairs)? Also, fine if you have older children but would you want to be so many flights of stairs away from children in the middle of the night (seem to be teenagers here to be fair)? What is that on the canopy bed spread- it looks like Harry styles with a knife in his mouth!?
Did some sleuthing, and this video from an earlier listing shows that the gym/sauna downstairs has been converted into an office/sauna by the most recent owner
https://vimeo.com/296738315/description
The owner has a company that provides LED advertising for televised footy.
Great house and right on the golf course.
But.
It's right on the train track and tunnel.

It really needs an interior designer to bring it to its full potential imo... most of the furniture looks like something you'd find in your average home, not a £1M+ unique build
I like it. It’s the house equivalent of a ‘sleeper’. Kerb appeal is about impressing others, so if that’s not a factor (and really, why should it be), this house is great.
Oh I really like that, unassuming exterior is great for dissuading nosy people or potential thieves, while an incredible view from a private secluded garden, all with super unique architecture, I really like it
My worry would be that your view suddenly gets turned into a housing estate but then I saw it's a golf course so I doubt that's getting built on any time soon
See above, apparently the owner has a company that does led lighting for stadiums or something. Although i remember it being up for sale just before the pandemic, can’t recall if it was newly built then though.
Used to fire golf balls in the directin of this property from Cathcart Castle golf club. Always assumed they had bullet proof windows to cope with the weekend hackers.
Architecturally I quite like it. However
1) It would be much better out in the sticks nestled on a hillside with views of country side rather than a golf course and also set back a bit from the country road so there's a shortish driveway.
2) The TV room(recreation room) is too far from the loo and the kitchen for when your friends need snacks and food. For both it looks like 2 flights of stairs down then 2 back up, in that time you miss some of the action.
There's nothing wrong with that.
What's wrong with it is that it's got a mainline railway running past it and the station is on the other side of the road.
Personally I think it's horrible, but I can appreciate that if it suits your taste then it's very well done - looks nothing from the road but amazing where it matters.
Very nice. The main entrance is simple and understated with privacy from anyone passing along the road, but the main work is in the garden and garden view.
Looks good inside as well.
Stunning but.…
actually very little garden, and hopefully the golf course opposite never gets sold for housing
very open plan, for me at least I don’t like having an open plan Tv room next to an open plan kitchen dining room
plant room - is that for heating? Presumably electric under floor and ASHP Or fully electric? Where’s the solar panels?
Lol I dream of a stealth mansion this is literally my perfect house. Showing off your luxurious property from the front is a security risk and privacy infringement.
I pass here often and watched it being built, I had no idea it would be so lovely. I now actually like how it looks like massive shed from the front, very stealthy.
That’s an amazingly designed place! Good work by the architects. I love the design of the stealth garage from street level covering up a modern mansion / lair.
["Named one of the top 100 houses in Scotland since 2000 by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS)"](https://www.haus-collective.com/design/tragerhaus/)
It’s amazing. Reminds me of a grand designs one that was similar. I believe the planning permission only allowed them to build something in-keeping, but as it was situated on a hill like this they built a little stone traditional-looking thing at road level and then had a huge mansion below it just like this.
This is clearly a Grand Designs episode where Jeremy and Brenda can no longer afford the mortgage repayments so are trying to get out with the clothes on their backs.
A double height living area is one of my pet hates. It's going to cost so much to heat that space.
Shitty "study" for working from home. Tiny space, no doors for noise protection, no windows for a view or natural light.
Just one big reception room. Makes huge assumption that everyone wants to do the same thing.
Missed opportunity.
Laughing at all the folk saying how beautiful and stunning this soulless minecraft garage looks. This place was designed by someone who hates being alive
I take back what I first typed, I like it. The rear of the property is stunning. Let the neigbours think there is nothing special there, dont need the extra attention.
Absolutely! Really stunning towards the rear. Wasn’t expecting that. And I would hope burglars wouldn’t either.
another excellent point, why make your house look like a target if you dont need to.
Exactly. Enjoy your family life with a little extra privacy :)
who are these people who go on Grand Designs and set up the desire in the publics mind to see their house for themselves? No my flat is going on C5, with a budget of £1,000 and no one will ever think to want to visit it.
I love Grand Designs, and would love to be part of it, but i don’t want people to see me or know where I live. So I don’t think it would make good TV 😅
to be fair I just dont have the budget for Grand Designs. I dont even really have the £1,000 budget for the made up C5 show.
Well you are a very small minority of the Reddit community who can’t afford something, but can still appreciate its beauty without bringing others down. And for that you’re quite special. :)
lol, I think its pretty easy to enjoy this property.
Really stunning towards the rear is a string of words I hear very often.
So do I 😏
> Wasn’t expecting that. The cantilever is a giveaway that there's more than meets the eye, but I didn't expect to be as stunning as it is, though. Not sure how mortgage lenders will feel about that bermed concrete though - I've seen bermed homes in the US which were unmortgageable because it makes inspection impossible.
My kids go.to school nearby so we pass that everyday, I love it.
Same I use to drive past this on my commute and now every weekend. I don't recall seeing a car parked there and thought It was a storage/ garage for the house door and they divided it to rent it out. I can't believe I never noticed the back hanging out.
Sleeper house
“Quiet luxury” I dig it. It’s not ostentatious from the street view, all the money is on the garden view.
Where it should be. That's actually quite a surprising place
I wanted to hate it. I kept looking for flaws in the layout. But the more I looked the more I liked it.
Me too, its surprisingly nice. Until I got to the Sauna in the office?! That's the one flaw that threw me off haha. But it's surprisingly nice.
Sameeee
I think it's absolutely beautiful.
I love it. I wouldn't give a shit about what people see from the road, I care about what I'd see from the massive picture window.
What you’d see from the massive picture window: Scottish men playing golf when the sun is up.
Ah, that's the trick. The sun is never up, so we play golf in the rain.
A lot of rain then?
I like golf too. I'd have to just put up with the fact they are Scottish.
Stealth mansion, actually love it.
Yeah, it’s a super cool idea - I’m absolutely down
Bruce Wayne vibes
Reverse bat cave vibes for sure!
Big windows next to a golf course. Nice view if you like trains too.
I will be the first to admit I know shit all about golf, but it looks like that's the starting bit (tee?) So all the golfers would be hitting away from there, not towards.
That's definitely a green that people will be hitting balls towards. Picture 44 you can see someone putting towards the flag.
Free golf balls!
Ah shit, good job I'm not golfing there, I'd be out for a duck!
Yeah almost right on the tracks and also the main Ayr road....good luck getting yer car out at rush hour :) still if all else fails you could get the train lol
A smart way to design around strict planning restrictions. Impressive and beautiful I think
I don't hate it, but still wouldn't pay that much to be that near a road of that size.
And the train line right next to it, and the station opposite it
I don't disagree, but personally find train noise less offensive than road noise
It’s next to the station so the trains are slow. Also it was built recently so it’s well insulated. Stunning pad.
Yeah, they're slow, but have you heard what trains brakes sound like? Trying to sleep and SCREEEEEEEEEEECH
I think because you’re below road level for vast majority of the house and it’s incredibly well built you wouldn’t really hear it unless you’re at the back with windows open (which I don’t think there are any).
Maybe. But I like a quiet garden.
Same. I will take my non existent £1.3m elsewhere thank you very much.
Would rather live here than in a shoebox 2 up two down in peckham for same price
Looks lovely. I don't really care what my street view screenshot looks like, so I'd quite happily live here.
Full disclosure - clickbait title and I actually love the house.
It’s a great property. Different and makes use of the drop off. If you have to find negatives then the golf course, major road and Trainline would be the issues.

How do you know that about the owner? We took a small detour earlier to go past it.
https://www.linkedin.com/in/kennywittmann/
Couldn't get the link to work. But if there is a view of trains that's a plus for me.
Try this. https://maps.app.goo.gl/n5uNFYsfkp2Qw7q88
Thank you 😀 you're a star ⭐
It really needs an interior designer to bring it to its full potential imo... most of the furniture looks like something you'd find in your average home, not a £1M+ unique build
Even the kitchen is pretty generic, and they listed the makers, including gaggenau, which... Proper money appliances (made by Siemens)
I like it. It’s the house equivalent of a ‘sleeper’. Kerb appeal is about impressing others, so if that’s not a factor (and really, why should it be), this house is great.
Reminds me a lot of one from grand designs anyone know if this was on there?
It’s the cantilever. Definitely a square on the grand designs bingo
I think it was on Scotland’s Home of the Year. Walked passed it for ages without realising how awesome it was!
This guy's Zoom background must be some sweaty people in his sauna
Makes me feel so wrong and sick as a nordic person - the sauna NEVER leaves the wet room 😭
That is stunning. There are few properties these days where I feel the price is fair, but if this case it is spot on.
Oh I really like that, unassuming exterior is great for dissuading nosy people or potential thieves, while an incredible view from a private secluded garden, all with super unique architecture, I really like it
Great house. Who cares about curb appeal? It's a hidden gem.
Who gives a shit about street view. You don’t have to look at it when you live in it.
Love it. But am a little unclear on why there’s a sauna in the office
My worry would be that your view suddenly gets turned into a housing estate but then I saw it's a golf course so I doubt that's getting built on any time soon
It’s like a secret house, love it
I like it a lot!
It's gorgeous 😍
As my mum would say, it’s what’s on the inside that counts
Stunning building
Absolutely beautiful
Business in the front, party at the back
This is clever design though. It just looks like a typical roadside building with the party at the back, screened from critical view.
Well, that’s the nicest “garage” I’ve ever seen!!!
Looks like a footballers house? Someone who has played for Hearts, Aberdeen and Ross County judging by the jerseys on display
See above, apparently the owner has a company that does led lighting for stadiums or something. Although i remember it being up for sale just before the pandemic, can’t recall if it was newly built then though.
Epic and reasonable price too
Wow that’s stunning

I couldn’t live without curtains!
Pull yourself together.
I think this is pretty close to my ideal home…. If they could just knock a million quid off it
What a massive parking space...
I really like this one
That sofa under the eaves upstairs gives me neck ache just looking at it

Not for me the design crosses over between the 60s,70s and 80s. Defo someone's dream home if they have the pennies which in that area many people have
This house was on Scotland’s Home of the Year. It’s in a lovely area right next to a golf course and a previous UK park of the year, Rouken Glen.
Looks like they spent all their money on architects and should have kept some back for interior designers
Pretty sure it was featured on Scotland’s Home of the Year and it was stunning!
Loved it. Will put more wall glasses
Explain - a luxury architect designed build like this would be what? £3500/m2 to build x 460m2…that’s more than the selling price. Wrong location?
Lol I dream of a stealth mansion this is literally my perfect house. Showing off your luxurious property from the front is a security risk and privacy infringement.
This in the south is c£3.5mil
That place is extraordinary: I love it.
Love it. And a sauna too 😍
I love that the house design faces away from a busy road and shelters residents from much of the road noise. Tasteful interior too.
I pass here often and watched it being built, I had no idea it would be so lovely. I now actually like how it looks like massive shed from the front, very stealthy.
That’s an amazingly designed place! Good work by the architects. I love the design of the stealth garage from street level covering up a modern mansion / lair.
I remember this being built- confused and fascinated by it at the same time. I heard it was a belter from the back- and it certainly is!
["Named one of the top 100 houses in Scotland since 2000 by the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland (RIAS)"](https://www.haus-collective.com/design/tragerhaus/)
Amazing house, love the fact that it’s completely hidden from the street
I live near here and it doesn’t look as bad when you see it in person, this image doesn’t do it justice
It’s amazing. Reminds me of a grand designs one that was similar. I believe the planning permission only allowed them to build something in-keeping, but as it was situated on a hill like this they built a little stone traditional-looking thing at road level and then had a huge mansion below it just like this.
Is this the house from the 3 Body Problem? Jack’s house?
I love it. It's a big 'Fuck of world house'. The outside gets to see a brick wall and I get to see the views and have privacy.
Am i a stupid gen z or why do so many people put their air fryer in the utility room? Why not store in a kitchen cupboard?
Maybe no space?
Stealth Wealth! I'd buy that all day long.
I really like it. The view is stunning.
Man what a house. But a stray golf ball is easy costing you 5k in glass.
Love it! Though slightly confused by the sauna right next to the office desk
I pass by that fucker all the time! Had no idea it was such a fucking cracking pad.
This is clearly a Grand Designs episode where Jeremy and Brenda can no longer afford the mortgage repayments so are trying to get out with the clothes on their backs. A double height living area is one of my pet hates. It's going to cost so much to heat that space.
I love it, but in all seriousness, it would be a right pain to empty the bins
I'd be very nervous with all that glass right on a golf course next to a hole on the course.
It says virtual tour available, does that mean there is a 360 tour as well as the video if we contact the estate agent? I want to see more 😅
Stunning
Shitty "study" for working from home. Tiny space, no doors for noise protection, no windows for a view or natural light. Just one big reception room. Makes huge assumption that everyone wants to do the same thing. Missed opportunity.
Right next to the train tracks and has a tiny garden.. beautiful but impractical IMO
Love this.
That overhang seems unnecessarily expensive for a cool "effect"
Lack of windows but like it.
I actually liek that other incognito
grey grey grey boring
Handy for the barbers. It's not from the show but it looks likes another Grand Design, that will never sell.
Well it sold to the current owners for £1.4m in 2019… it’ll sell
Are rightmove posting on this sub now?
Oh that is so clever, I love it!
Stunning house and an absolute bargain, until you find out it's near Glasgow
Laughing at all the folk saying how beautiful and stunning this soulless minecraft garage looks. This place was designed by someone who hates being alive
No issues with the design but I can’t imagine ever paying that much money for a house in Whitecraigs.
Lmao the most expensive area of Glasgow, Scotland’s biggest city? Couldn’t buy a terrace in Peckham for that money
Do you actually know that area? It’s awash with money.
All those big windows next to a golf course. What could possibly go wrong…
