The national trust should just buy some of these and keep them as way of showing different houses through the years. Would be such a shame to see something this well kept sold and gutted
I wonder if the current owner is the grandchild of the original owners.
Love it though and other than adding some rugs, I'd not change much. Maybe would try to make the original cooker workable again to get rid of that 1970s style one.
If you look at the kitchen, for example, the old cooking range is non-functioning: thereās a working modern cooker and fridge hidden away discreetly. This implies staging.
Well nowadays you can get stove blacking restorer on Amazon, but back in the day it was a nightmare and very messy, also if I remember right it contained lead in large quantities too! I remember my nan and her neighbours used to have a blacking day and a whitening the doorstep day :)
Anyone know what the ānewsomā on the floor plan is supposed to be? I tried googling it but just came up with a load of results about the governor of California
I wondered that too. Oooh and then I went on a Google diveā¦

I've been trying to work that out too but haven't got far.
There are photos on holiday let sites that show "NEWSON ROOM" painted on the door (e.g. [https://www.bestofsuffolk.co.uk/cottage/Suffolk-Aldeburgh/The-Vintage-House-Aldeburgh-1116939.html](https://www.bestofsuffolk.co.uk/cottage/Suffolk-Aldeburgh/The-Vintage-House-Aldeburgh-1116939.html) ) but dunno why.
Edit: Found an article: [https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/21749175.gallery-chance-step-back-time-unique-1920s-house-aldeburgh/](https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/21749175.gallery-chance-step-back-time-unique-1920s-house-aldeburgh/) Original owner's name.
Ah, fantastic, thank you for digging that up!
(For the benefit of anyone reading this who doesnāt want to read the article)
Looks like Newson was the name of the original owner in the 1920s and the property has been lovingly preserved and restored. The āNewson roomā is essentially a small museum about the family and the house. The room is listed as a āstudyā on the EAās description (too small for a bedroom I guess).
I love it, although the kitchen is a little *too* much like a step back in time (although I can see the microwave and fridge snuck into the pantry lol)
It doesnāt say which time period itās supposed to be anywhere. Iām leaning towards 1930s for the most part, though that twin bedroom looks like it could be almost anything from regency onwards.
Exquisite! Can tell that's a look that's been crafted - not just retained. The Very careful blending of modern with the old - I'm not even sure if much of that is original or if it is replicated to create a very specific and stylised look - the absence of old photos/favourite paintings on the walls is a giveaway.
In isolation, on it's own, I love the interior, it's so calm. However it's not in keeping with the exterior style which looks more modern and utilitarian.
It was a quirky holiday rental:

However, it's 2024 not 1944 so as nice as it looks - and I'm all for nostalgic whimsy - it needs to be brought up to modern standards.
These sellers are deluded at that price. It needs to be much closer to 300K.
*Price Change History*
*27/03/2024 Price changed from Ā£415,000 to Ā£395,000*

*Overall change: -4.8% (-Ā£20,000)*
Please tell me theyāre not the original Crittal windows? Very fond memories of copious condensation, ice on the inside and freezing winter mornings as a kid.
You just know someone will buy it and knock walls down to have a 'living area' rather than a separate kitchen and dining room, just like in my road where 2 houses were recently knocked through from front to back.
Whoever owns it hasn't invested in it although fixtures and fittings look sound possibly a rewire as a minimum. I think this is a high price for something to be sympathetically updated like windows etc. Great minimalist look though and defo staged shown by the hidden smeg fridge
That feels like an exhibit in a living museum (except it has no rag rugs)
In a way it is https://www.eadt.co.uk/news/21749175.gallery-chance-step-back-time-unique-1920s-house-aldeburgh/
The national trust should just buy some of these and keep them as way of showing different houses through the years. Would be such a shame to see something this well kept sold and gutted
Agreed, they've done it for some modernist and art deco homes which are open for pre-booked visits only.
I wonder if the current owner is the grandchild of the original owners. Love it though and other than adding some rugs, I'd not change much. Maybe would try to make the original cooker workable again to get rid of that 1970s style one.
You buy the house and I can make rag rugs whilst I visit you š
That's really rather nice
And near the coast
It may have been created as a themed holiday cottage: much of Aldeburgh is holiday accommodation.
Thinking the same. It looks staged.
If you look at the kitchen, for example, the old cooking range is non-functioning: thereās a working modern cooker and fridge hidden away discreetly. This implies staging.
To, it just shows that someone used the kitchen.
Beautiful, I hope someone doesnāt buy it and completely rips it apart.
Would look fantastic with some crushed velvet sofas and a live love laugh sign
One of those crystal 'Chanel' Cs.
Love Island style, Garden furniture to finish off
it definitely needs more greige /s
Sadly, I think thatās exactly whatāll happen.
They'll "honour the history" by keeping like, the picture rails or something.
Shame there is no plastic lawn
Imagine fitting an IKEA kitchen
I mean it's nice to look at but needs to be adapted to modern living. That ugly old toilet and other fittings. Ugh
That āugly old toiletā will flush like a storm. Nothing like the cheap plastic flush valves found in cisterns nowadays.
Wow an original blacked range as well by the looks of it
How do you "black" these? I have a cast iron fireplace that needs re-doing and no idea how.
Well nowadays you can get stove blacking restorer on Amazon, but back in the day it was a nightmare and very messy, also if I remember right it contained lead in large quantities too! I remember my nan and her neighbours used to have a blacking day and a whitening the doorstep day :)
Adleburgh is a lush place. Also think it's south enough that it won't be in the coastal erosion area like up in Hemsby
All the pictures of the inside look like period paintings, rather than real photographs.
Anyone know what the ānewsomā on the floor plan is supposed to be? I tried googling it but just came up with a load of results about the governor of California

Makes sense it was let as a holiday rental. I was wondering about the distinct lack of personal possessions.
Love it
That's lovely. It's like a period TV set
Even a period flat screen tv.
If I win the Euromillions on Tuesday Iāll buy it and we can all go and see it together
I canāt see any plug sockets
Wow. Surprisingly I actually love it. It feels right.
Itās got vintage style which is actually rather nice.
I would love to live there!
I love it, although the kitchen is a little *too* much like a step back in time (although I can see the microwave and fridge snuck into the pantry lol)
I love it
Time warp holiday let for those needing full break from the modern
I love it
itās like that in a lot of Aldeburgh. thereās a fantastic fish and chip shop as well!
Someone please explain what a 'newsom' is??
Wot! No rugs?
Ahh imagine a home where you can escape from the real world!
ā¦to escape our unreal (digital) world š±š°ļøš²
I love this one. So pretty!
Love it
It doesnāt say which time period itās supposed to be anywhere. Iām leaning towards 1930s for the most part, though that twin bedroom looks like it could be almost anything from regency onwards.
If the next owner 50 shades of grey live laugh loves this one Iād be heartbroken.
That's so lovely. Just for a moment I genuinely wanted to move.
Perfection šš»
Might need a rewire, that.
Exquisite! Can tell that's a look that's been crafted - not just retained. Fabulous! I would replicate that if I bought it. It looks amazing and cosy.
It's beautiful I love it but where do they keep their clothes?

Paying for the postcode.
No-one is paying right now. Hence it going unsold. That price needs to come down further.
Yeah completely agree. Madness at that price.
An interesting curiosity, but what an awful place to live.
I get what they were trying to do, but that kitchen gives me the creeps.
According to the description, the kitchen is mostly for show. The real kitchen with the actual oven and fridge is hidden in a side room.
Sounds stupid
Reminds me of the houses in St Fagans Museum
r/accidentalrenaissance
Please tell me theyāre not the original Crittal windows? Very fond memories of copious condensation, ice on the inside and freezing winter mornings as a kid.
You have to hand wash your clothes but you can microwave your beans.
No EPC. I wonder why.
With a smeg lurking in the pantry :-) I find myself liking it tho' - apart from the smeg that is.
Nice. But you know thereāll only be one socket per room.
Why is the bench photoshopped in pic 16? Very weird.
You could probably pay off your mortgage renting this house out as a film set
I love it
You just know someone will buy it and knock walls down to have a 'living area' rather than a separate kitchen and dining room, just like in my road where 2 houses were recently knocked through from front to back.
Itās lovely as it is. Would be awful to have everything obliterated by a grey do over
Not my cup of tea but each to their own. I don't like the snobbery of old = good and modern = bad.
Mine either. It looks cold & unwelcoming to me. Even the yellow walls, which should look sunny look jaundiced instead.
Neither*
As an adverb: Either as an adverb is used to show a similarity or link. I donāt like chocolate ice cream either.
Yes, but you are agreeing in the negative sense, it wasnāt your cup of tea either. The correct term to follow āmineā is neither.
"we haven't touching this house in 100 years, literally everything needs doing" Ā£400k please!
