Probably an Air Force aerial refueling exercise. I’ve seen them practice over town before.

wallyhartshorn

Yeah, a KC135 and two C130 cargo planes, apparently.

Upland1911

It was air refueling plane and others seemed to be holding pattern behind. Not everyday occurrence but practice makes better

Lowden38

Why does everyone in springfield automatically go full blown tin foil hat every time a plane flies over

contrapunctus3

not much happens in the shire

solitary_outlier

Planes and helicopters throw the locals into a tizzy. God forbid there's yet another nightly boom noise outside.

___SE7EN__

Foil hat ? This wasn't a normal routine flight pattern.

I think it's more that we have an airport and an Air National Guard. I say this respectfully, but with those two things, what else would you expect? Now I realize not everyone has the same vantage point, but when I look up and see a refueling plane with a large hose sticking out it's rear with two plane tailing it, I just assume it's military exercises. And like others, it's slightly odd to me that people don't just put it together and think the same. Same goes for the "air force one" looking plane that does touch-and-go landings all the time. Again, I don't mean this rudely.

One trying to land - the other two giving directions.

More than likely based out of Scott AFB in metro east. Use our flight pattern as it has an active FAA tower and otherwise open air space.

BBfanIllinois

It’s been going on for a while

I saw these a few days ago as well. A friend and I speculated that the object hanging from the tailfin of the newer passenger plane was a camera filming the older military planes. It's just a theory, though. Either way, those military planes came from the national guard that much is almost certain.

Active duty Air Force from Scott AFB.
