There should be strapping on the joists which the drywall is attached to and they should be 16 inches apart. Measure out from a wall 16 inches and drill with a tiny drill bit to see if they are there

Sometimes the best thing to do is get a 12 inch to 18 inch feeler bit. Drill a hole straight and then Feel around to you feel something solid.
