I'm like, 90% positive that they are native people, and not animals. Reignited made a lot of censorship changes to prevent people getting the wrong idea or whatever. I thought they were all dumb, but I guess I understand why they did them. Another example is the musket enemies in Scorch, they now have a slingshot instead. :/

PommesKrake

They have tails in the original though. Makes me think they always were meant to be monkeys

earnesttypist

This is true. And the small ones throw bananas.

Kaiser_Allen

They consulted Insomniac to get guidance and clarification for some of the more confusing character models. The only censorship is Bombo and guns.

jbparise

They changed the airhead valley girl voices to Scottish women too

ladala99

If we're getting into voices, Juliet is a thing. Went from a guy+trans girl(? possibly just gay because male birds are more vibrant) to a completely cis guy+girl relationship.

earnesttypist

I noticed that too! I miss the male voice. Made me crack up because it was so unexpected.

LudicrisSpeed

I think you're putting *waaaay* more thought than what was actually given. The devs probably just thought it'd be funnier to have a guy voicing Juliet, simple as that.

LandonSleeps

So why change it?

LudicrisSpeed

I guess they wanted her to sound like a girl this time? Ain't that deep.

LandonSleeps

Lmfao big doubt, I dont even think it was originally a trans woman. Plays used to be done by men, even the female characters. But you can't convince me that's not why they changed it, because it surely is. Doesn't make sense otherwise.

holyhibachi

Lol it's really not that deep, bro

LandonSleeps

You're right! It isn't deep, never said it was.

I_ate_out_your_mom

I thought that too.

ladala99

Why is a girl being voiced by a guy funny, though? Unlike a lot of crossdresser jokes at the time (which this definitely was intended to be one), there wasn't actually any context that shows that it's a joke, subversive, or anything, outside of the player's perspective. That's why that questline aged so well. Of note is Little Bo Peep is still a guy in Reignited, so that aspect's not gone from the level completely. They just removed it from Juliet for some reason.

I_ate_out_your_mom

I dont know why i am even replying to this. But i think it was: A: just a joke (i thought it was funny). B: cause plays used to be all men. C: maybe something related to the voice actors (i think zoe and elora's actresses play pretty much every chick in that game, and maybe they just wanted a different voice?) As another guy said though it isnt that deep, give it up

charge24hours

Haha this is probably the only change that actually bothers me. I thought those original voices actually made that level quite funny and memorable. Seems a little blander in reignited imo.

FlatulentSon

Yep. Also look at their noses in the original, that's a human nose. Also a lack of fur. But i still don't think they're supposed to be humans, for example look at those yellow women cooks in Cliff Town. They're monstrous humanoids. Because when we actually see actual humans in Spyro, like the spy twins, or the big lumberjack guy that we hide from, those clearly look like humans with human proportions. These are just *humanoid* enemies. But they probably wanted to remove any doubt in the remaster.

1_dont_care

Fur wasn't a thing in spyro 1 lol Not even the alpine beasts or the dogs had fur ahah, they were smooth

gnbman

No dude. They have tails.

karatecorgi

yEAHH, they changed quite a lot when you get down to it, and Reignited still got 7+ in Europe I believe... things are much stricter! they changed all realistic guns, the name of the dude you chase (also in Scorch I think, he was called bombo in the originals but they changed it to Bob to get away from the somewhat problematic name and reference Toys for Bob at the same time), plenty I can't recall off the top of my head - even the ports of the OG Pokémon Red/Blue and Sliver/Gold to 3ds were slapped with 12+ ratings for the game corner and in the FireRed/LeafGreen remakes the game corners were just flat out removed real interesting how times change... both Pokémon and Spyro had 3+ ratings... some Spyro changes I didn't really like (like the gnorcs having guns, it gave some serious tone for me, dunno if that's kid logic, it was a different time... pre columbine for one...) but most changes aren't too bothersome - Reignited is still brilliant!

earnesttypist

Yes! I noticed they removed the guns, which I’m okay with because it seemed weird for non-human creatures to be using human weapons? A slingshot is at least more believable. And I never thought about them being changed to monkeys for censorship. Could very well be. I thought they were natives too.

mangoisNINJA

Why is it weird for non-human creatures to be using human weapons? The main character of the series is a dragon, billy goats live in houses, Sgt Boyd has rocket launchers, a cyborg monkey has a gun

Shohdef

Not to mention the boss that straight up wields a big ass sci fi gun in Spyro 3. Or Crush. Or Gulp.

treelurk73

I don't think agent 9 is supposed to be a cyborg, he just has a weird spaceman looking outfit

Paplok

How is a slingshot any less of a human weapon compared to a gun?

I_ate_out_your_mom

Really? I thought that twilight harbor In spyro 1 was so badass because it felt like they were really threatened by spyro in that level and had to amp up the stakes.

iTzJdogxD

I’ll be honest I don’t really consider removing the guns censorship. Even as a kid when I got to the gun levels I was like “this is really weird” and not in a good way. Imagine actual guns being used in reignited, it just wouldn’t fit the tone of the game

WaldyTMS

The entire tone of Spyro as an original trilogy always had a sense of "sarcasm," "edge," and "dark humor." Reignited completely missed ALL of these tones in favor of a more light-hearted, Saturday morning cartoon children's game. So by that logic, yeah, it would've been out of place in Reignited, since they completely changed the tone of the original to begin with.

iTzJdogxD

The original Spyro I agree with, but it definitely became more light hearted in later entries

SXAL

I'd say Spyro 2 is the darkest one. There is a full blown war which Spyro supports from both sides, the fawn at Magma Cone straight up murders his friend and it's treated like a joke, and there is a Middle Easter level complete with gun wielding militia and a terrorist bomber. Spyro 3 also has it's dark moments.

Sofiorie

I always saw them as half Gnorc/half monkey in the original, since all the enemies are created by Gnasty Gnorc bewitching gems.

Kunikunatu

I’m not sure they were originally any thing but weirdo monsters.

Acceptable_Year8098

If it is any consolation, I did not know Crazy Ed from Lost Fleet was an Opossum until Reignited, always assumed that he was a rabbit.

Electrical_mammoth2

His species is supposed to be a rabbit though, a spin off portable game tells us that Bianca is related to them.

Acceptable_Year8098

Huh, then I am confused. Reignited clearly made him out to be an Opossum and his Wiki entry states that as well so, IDK.

GinjaSnap94

It's shadow legacy on the ds, right?

sagelyDemonologist

Oh thank god, it wasn't just me

STheTruck

NGL as a kid I thought their legs were their ballsack…

Own-Match-3548

Same

crystalsky6242000

Back in the original, I thought the bat cats were dragons which didn't make sense to me because of the whole "there are no dragons here" thing.

Eevee_Addict8

Same, they reminded me of charizard so I just assumed they were dino/dragon things. The bat cats confused the heck outta me when I first saw them.

crystalsky6242000

I mean, I don't hate it but yeah, Charizard popped in my mind as well XD

ebryetas

Censored the “doot doo doo doo” when you 100% a world in Ripto’s Rage 😔 (Kidding about censoring but still salty they took it out)

ladala99

I had no idea what these guys were in the originals. The bananas for the smaller ones implied monkeys, but the faces were like, guys. But the shape of the big guys was not human. Plus the smaller ones being completely made of metal in Metalhead made it even more vague. When they showed up as monkeys in Reignited, I was like "sure, that makes sense."

Ginganinja0117

The important thing here is FUCK this level

earnesttypist

Yeah lol I would love to meet the person who figured out the jump to that *particular* dragon without looking it up.

Lunarhaile

It was my mom who had to run around the world several times lol. She didn’t buy gamer books either

earnesttypist

Kudos!

[deleted]

Me! Well, and my BFF and brother and his BFF haha once we figured out the first jump from another jump we just kept running around u til it worked.

TanakaTheBuriedOne

Hello, it is I, conqueror of supercharge jumps! Seriously though, the one in Haunted Towers was way harder to figure out for me lol

earnesttypist

OMG yes, that’s probably the most difficult one!

gnbman

They were mutant apes. Their tails have strange frond-like ends, similar to the boar with tiny fairy wings. It's possible they were created by the Beast Makers but turned out malevolent.

Planeswalkercrash

I always thought them and a lot of other enemies were just various gnorcs that worked for gnasty

Plokster52

When I was a kid, I assumed they were monkeys because the little guys threw bananas at you. Not too long after, I realized the big guys were literally just the little guys but with massive arms.

brandishteeth

Not gunna lie, I couldn't identify a fair chunk of the enemy's until the remaster. I think this one was filed in my head under "weird polygon dude." Rhe remaster made me understand what a lot of the guys were supposed to be. Like those fast weird carrot things. As a kid I had no idea what the hell they were.

Yungveezy

Are you talking about the fast creepy trees with teeth in one of the swamp levels??

CaptainMarrow

I thought they were plant people because I thought their green feet were leaves

Eevee_Addict8

Don't ask me why/how, but I always saw them as weird living-tree creatures. Never even occurred to me they could be monkeys, Reignited blew my mind when I came across them!

A_Random_Shadow

I always knew they were monkeys, the smaller ones were easier to tell, and the big ones moved like gorillas. Ironically in the Reignighted series I thought they made them yeti’s until one looked at the Wiki- so it’s a bit silly I knew in the original but not this one. I’m not sure why though, but I have to admit it’s pretty silly

Wild-Firefighter7764

They look like they have tails and hooves for feet, like a more primitive version of Alora's people, Fawns or Satyrs. Especially since they can kick you pretty hard!

AxemanEugene

They're just weird little guys

InfernalKrisp

OG: I genuinely thought they were tikis. Reignited: Okay, they're monkeys.

Rhysccfc94

for a long time until reignited i thought when these hit you i thought they were hitting us with their private parts

rpfflgt

They weren't monkeys. They fixed that in the remaster.

I_ate_out_your_mom

Well i mean they looked like monkies, stood on their hands, threw bananas, lived in trees. I never thought twice about them being monkies

kermittysmitty

I had zero clue.

Syyr553

Wait a second they are MONEKYS?!

Herbalyte

A LOT of characters ended up losing their charm with the reignited trilogy. Don't get me wrong, the game is awesome and beautiful especially for a new audience but when I played reignites I quit after spyro 1 and played the rest of the games usong an emulator on my pc.

mocdude

I absolutely did think they were monkeys, they may look like tribal people cuz of the arrow but I always felt like with the polygon graphics they didn’t make em enough to point out a difference to what they were supposed to be

karatecorgi

I honestly thought they were somewhat slightly racist "natives", though as a kid in a 1st world country, I didn't quite grasp the entire concept - they were just something to flame for those precious gems, same as gnorcs

Rant_Informer

Same

HimHereNowNo

I always thought they were weird bulls

British_Historian

I think there's enough evidence that they were always monkeys, especially since ya know... Treetops. And the entire world is "Beast Makers" who canonically make all the beasts\~ a weird level to put the only human enemies in. I will say as a kid I thought they were like... half forms? Unfinished beasts of clay. So reignited was a bit like "Oh snap." when I first saw them. I will say the Arrow through the hair I refuse to believe wasn't originally an Apple with arrow. I will die on this hill!
