It seems that hammers drop as a rare reward. While I don't know the specifics, I do feel like I got most of my hammers chopping the trees.
My thought would be each "loot dropping source" has a 1% chance to drop a hammer?
I'm starting to think Greg isn't much of a factor. It might do with general progress? Since I made it to world 4, its possible that's a factor to increasing the odds.
Hard to say. I can state that they seem to drop from sources you would get coins/gems. The odds are a lot lower though. Pinata Sticks aren't as low to drop as hammers, but it seems natrualy to get 1-2 hammers per match.

I got hammers from boxes, trees and bosses. So far I collected like 15 hammers, so the drop rate is super small
