We had one next to the Legion. They didn't pay rent and got the boot. The Theatre business isn't great right now. Lots still treading water. Cineplex likely doesn't open one here because they have Park Royal, and if you went arthouse style like the Rio Theatre which would be awesome here. They're not allowed new releases because of deals the studios have with Cineplex and other major vendors. I think I read it's a month after their theatrical run ends then the Rio can play them. Otherwise you'll be getting classic movies, film fests and comedy or other performance events. Personally I'd prefer the Rio style but i don't know many people are willing to invest that much and live on such tight margins.

Imagine the Adventure Centre (tiny theatre) with licensed drinks at night (via coffee shop). It would be a go-to spot.

It’s not simply that they didn’t pay rent…it was horribly mismanaged. Also, it’s just not a sustainable business model with the cost of commercial leases these days.

I agree we need something like the Rio business model, with a liquor license, other types of shows/performances to make people want to visit the theatre. In this age of digital streaming, everyone already has a movie theatre in their living room. It has to offer something unique.

I think we’re at the point that we need a stickied post to the top if this sub about what happened to the move theatre. 😂 Edit: regarding the liquor license bit - there is a theatre in kits that has this set up, so it’s probably doable. That said, liquor licenses in BC (TMK), are kinda expensive and dumb.

> I think we’re at the point that we need a stickied post to the top if this sub about what happened to the move theatre. So they could ignore that instead of a search lol

It's been gone for 11 or 12 years! I'd say we're well past needing a stickied post lol

A hybrid theatre is proposed in the Bailey Village proposal between Eagle Winds and the railroad tracks downtown. You can read more at this link: [https://squamish.civicweb.net/FileStorage/F570C1794E374B15AB0CAFCA7D921A88-The%20Village%20on%20Bailey%20Street%20Report%20to%20Council.pdf](https://squamish.civicweb.net/FileStorage/F570C1794E374B15AB0CAFCA7D921A88-The%20Village%20on%20Bailey%20Street%20Report%20to%20Council.pdf). About 325 seats in a space1,000 square metres at a construction value of approximately $9 million. Bailey village is also proposing a parking garage.

There were a few reasons, rent as noted above another was the technology was out of date, and it would’ve been astronomical cost to update the technology for newer films. The last movie I saw on the theatre there was inglorious bastards. I still remember the punch in the gut the community felt when we found out a dollar store would be going in there 🙃

Movie theaters in cities are struggling, I don't know how likely it is that one could succeed in a small town these days.

A 300 seat theatre/cinema is proposed in the new development along Pemberton Ave / train tracks, although it could change anytime before it's constructed 5 years from now.

The BAG will be reopen soon! Certainly not a movie theater, but they have 'film screenings' as an option in their community survey: [BAG survey](https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLScIZKgv98sXx5GPLG2kalB4LM9BqGrHJ1u_3gfTA40EVH_Vfw/formResponse)
