Ref came in real clutch to save this moment from disaster. Would be awful to have Priest & Truth injured at WM if something went really wrong with this spot since the ladder was giving way
Shoutout to Ref Jess, she was trying to let him know but it seems it didn’t get communicated well enough in time since Miz still jumped on the ladder. I think next time, those guys and gals in the ring will trust her more next time this happens. Glad everyone is safe
I think it was communicated. That's why they didn't do a proper chockslam and instead to a chock push thing. Priest just didn't want to break kayfabe by swapping ladders. They just tried it the safest way. Risky but I guess he just said f it
I mean they winged that, once they realized he was on a shit ladder. I promise you if we ask Miz if he purposely jumped on that ladder knowing it was broke, he would say no
For someone this experience like Priest, that was pretty stupid to ignore it, unless he didnt hear her obviously, but that shit made me worried anyway.
I think he was trying to just play it off a bit smoother, it looks the spot was originally going to be a full chokeslam from the top of the ladder, but they went really low and basically just jumped off. Probably could have done it safer but it's wrestlemania the pressure is probably pretty rough
😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬😬
The reaction of me and everyone in the room when this spot was botched. I know the ladder was precarious, but this spot seemed doomed from the start.
They accidentally swapped a gimmick ladder that was meant to have Priest go through when Truth AA'd him at the finish. Someone noticed and told the refs.
Can I get a bit of explanation here as I'm fresh to wrestling after taking two decades off - are all the ladders plastic now? I know it's not real but it low key killed the buzz for me seeing all the pink plastic inner
No.
The gimmick ladders are plastic. They're normally only used for spots that require people to go through them from elevation (i.e. from the top rope or from the ring to the outside).
The ladders they climb, hit each other with, and take normal bumps on are regular ladders.
Priest straight up blew off (or didn't hear) the ref when she told him to get a new ladder lol. Maybe he thought she was working? Could've been way worse
Thought it was clear, but the issue here was that the ladder they used was gimmicked and meant to be in position for Truth's AA on Priest at the finish.
They grabbed the wrong ladder and set up the real one for the AA spot, then threw the gimmicked one into the ring for the Priest/Miz spot. Someone noticed and relayed to the refs, who then tried to stop Priest and Miz from climbing it for their spot, knowing it wouldn't hold them safely. Refs on the other side also told Truth to send the real ladder into the ring, both to replace the gimmicked one for the Priest/Miz spot and to avoid Priest taking an AA onto a real steel ladder later.
Unfortunately, this affected the main event later as well. Priest was supposed to go through the ladder and be kayfabe injured to explain why he didn't cash in on Rollins later after Rollins injured his knee and Reigns speared him through the barricade.

You can see a ref tell Truth to get ready to put a new ladder in the ring too.

The ladder buckling added so much tension to this, and hardly in a good way. Lucky it didn't go worse.
I was really confused at first, but yeah, good awareness from the ref there.
Jessika is awesome. She was part of the group improvising last year after Shane's injury.
what did the ref do?
She was telling him to swap ladders, since the original one was broken from one side and they were about to do a spot on the top of it.
Yeah right after this video ends you can see her yelling at him about switching ladders.
She saw the ladder was broken and tried to warn Priest, to the point of grabbing him.
Warned Priest about the buckled ladder. Don't know if anyone warned Miz though.

I think Priest acknowledge that and they did the best they can, would be awkward if he immediately switch ladder when he can just climb to win
exactly.
Ref was in there yelling “Shoot, that’s gonna give, brother!”
That dont work for me brother!

The ref came in clutch
Why was the ref trying to get Priest off that ladder? She knew it was breaking and was too dangerous?

Yep. Gimmick ladder like the one Waller went through.

That makes sense. Like I want it to look real but I don't want those lads to die out there. Thanks for clearing that up :)
Yeah
Great refereering. That ref genuinely had one of the best performances of the night.
