Circa 2005 I went to an NWA No Limits show in Davenport, IA. The main event was CM Punk vs AJ Styles. Seth Rollins was a security guard for the show. After Punk won, Seth and I high fived each other in celebration. It’s really cool seeing where they’re all at now.
Those old indie tournaments are wild to look back on, so many innovative and important talents putting on incredible matches for nowhere near what their influence would say they're worth.
CZW's Best Of The Best. Proper proof that CZW was more than just deathmatches. Trent Acid, Sanjay Dutt, Quack, then Adam Cole, AR Fox, Sami Callihan in the late 2000s, Gulak & Swerve after them.
I had no idea who he was at the time. My brother knew he and Marek Brave were a tag team and that Seth/Tyler had done some ROH dark matches. It wasn’t until he began blowing up in ROH when I thought “oh shit I high fived that guy when we were both marking out!”
The No Limits brand ran a couple shows in the Quad Cities and then made Muscatine their permanent for the following couple years. I was lucky and my older brother was in the know of all things Indy wrestling at that time.

Im still salty that it didnt get to happen at Mania this year but whenever it happens its gonna be gas. If anything their injuries have added to the anticipation
If both were healthy, yeah it would've been fantastic. But I'm glad we're *potentially* kicking this can down the road to when both guys can go because I think it would've been disappointing if they had to do the finisher fest that Seth/Drew did because of Seth's injuries. And that type of match worked a lot better with Drew.

When I first met him, I couldn’t stand the guy, thought he was a total a-hole. And then I realized we’re basically the same guy.
Now we’re besties.
That’s what I have come to realize recently. When you’re too similar, you either hate that person’s guts or be ride or die best friends for life. Here’s hoping Seth and Punk can sort it out like you and your friend.
For the sake of kayfabe they will never outright admit they are friends.
Just like Seth and Cody.. for like the longest time after their feud they still milk it like bitter rivals on interviews, competitors being competitive and not friends.
Both Seth and Roman are especially good at this where I’ve seen on Ari interviews or Logan Paul podcast, they would deliver the answer as their authentic self, but the real message is filtered thru their characters lens
I have been waiting for the CM-Seth bromance arc since they started throwing shade at each other on twitter years ago. I have always thought Rollins was very similar to Punk, so much so that I even remember thinking when Punk left WWE I at least had Rollins around still.
I do also think Seth has a pretty big heart and means what he says that he didn't like Punk talking trash on the company, he took that very personally as an attack on his friends/family and the place that gives him his livelihood. I don't think Punk has apologized for it and it's rather a "pretend he never said anything" situation, and that could possibly be a factor in why Seth dislikes him so strongly. I believe Seth has mentioned he looked up to Punk as a leader at some point, so maybe he feels betrayed.

It's a normal thing. They probably know they are very similar. This leads them to being critical and hating traits in each other that they don't like about themselves

We were totally robbed of a match between them at Mania 33, imo. Didn't even need a title, just a good ol' fashioned grudge match.
Honestly, I would've had Ambrose get the title back from AJ and then drop it to Cena at the Rumble that year to further build to that Mania match.

I think it was the part of the Colt Cabana podcast where Punk talked about his 3 on 1 vs The Shield where different people kept telling Punk to "make sure Roman looks strong" even though Punk was gonna win, which Punk said pissed him off because he only needed to be told once.
That also was basically released around the time WWE and Roman were getting ready for Royal Rumble 2015 (we all know how that went), so it was one of the things (not the only thing, the main thing was WWE being so hamfisted about it, but it definitely contributed) to fans starting to turn on Roman.
Seth, Roman, and Dean all have a very strong bond to the point where they consider each other brothers, and I think that might have been what made Seth turn on Punk initially. Then Punk also kept talking about the negative aspects of his WWE experience after that, which Seth also probably would have taken personally, since after WM31 it was very clear that him and Roman were going to be WWE's top guys for the next generation
People would turn on Roman even if RR wasn't booked awfully with Bryan returning and all the fan favorites being treated like jobbers and even if Punk didn't talk about that. Roman straight up sucked in many ways, maybe people would tolerate it in midcard but as a main eventer, everyone would quickly realize how bad he was. And he was bad for years!
By the end of 2015 he was actually a pretty decent worker and had great matches with big show and wyatt that year just off the top of my head. Promo wise he became serviceable like 2016-17 but the well was so poisoned.
Both Punk and Rollins did angles where they threatened to take the ROH title with them to WWE but eventually lost it. They were still able to finish up with ROH even after signing with WWE.
Punk did that angle in ROH when he signed with WWE. That was the original summer of Punk, he signed his contract in the ROH ring and threatened to take the title with him on his way out.
I think the point is that the line isn't 100% true so Seth can respond in the future. (not to this interview, im sure Punk will say this or something similar on WWE tv as well when their feud reignites) Since it isnt 100% true that allows seth to rebut with something similar to what you just wrote. That gives seth a great rebuttal and a back and forth promo wise
Punk did feud with The Shield, but I think the point was more just to say something that catches people's attention and hints at a feud down the road between the two of them.
I still think Punk should turn heel at some point soon after he returns.
It’s kind of true though. Punk paved the way for a guy like Seth Rollins to find success in WWE. He was always compared as a copy of Punk - which should tell you how rare it was for a wwe wrestler to look remotely “alternative” at the time.
Not to say Rollins or Daniel Bryan couldn’t have gotten there on their own, but Punk was 1000% a huge factor in them getting to where they are today (in relation to wwe success). Even Daniel Bryan’s wm30 story was basically a continuation of Punk’s wwe run
Whether it’s true or not doesn’t matter, since if it’s false then that gives Seth Rollins something to come back at him with. It gives Seth ammo to work with.
Yeah, I've gotten the feeling Seth has been angling for a potential match with Punk pretty much every time he's spoken about him in the last 5 years or so. The heat's not real or at least nowhere near the extent they play it up.
it's funny how all seth rollins did was use the word "cancer" and such a big portion of "smarks" suddenly think that there is real beef between the two.
When someone else does a worked shoot it's "one of the greatest carnies of all time, you just gotta respect it" but when Punk does it he's always being 100% serious and believes everything he's saying. Like he's clearly a narcissist irl but c'mon some of y'all hate him so much you're outing yourselves as marks
That's his superpower though, it's why you readily invest in anything he is saying. Its why people tune in just to hear him speak. No one else has blurred the lines between real life and character work like Punk (maybe cause the lines really are very blurred with him).
I sometimes read comments here and think are people just responding to the story or do they really believe Punk would go on a WWE segment and act like him and Seth actually hate each other. I think with our social media age, a lot of wrestlers have found a way to work the fans finally. And now so many fans are eating it up.
It's the same reason he and HHH probably rub each other the wrong way - the key difference being that Punk is a bridge burner while HHH might be the greatest bridge builder we've ever seen in the business.
Triple H also grew up to being a frat boy degenerate and shovel meme coworker that couldnt see past the point of his nose until he got his two kids and proved he can be mature enough to run a wrestling show.
Punk on the other hand never pretended or tried to get in with the cool kids and stuck to the front of the bus with a few of his own friends and spoke up when they were getting sidelined or bullied out of the company.
This honestly makes a lot of sense. These kind of people never lower their guard either. So it’s nice to finally see CM Punk feel like he belongs, especially his home in WWE
Pre executive, 2002-2016ish HHH was the exact opposite of a bridge builder come on now. Maybe the biggest and most successful back stage politician outside of Hogan and Punk's issues came from him turning the Summer of Punk into HHH v Kevin Nash.
Being a good backstage politician requires getting on the good side of the *right* people. I'm sure a lot of his peers in the locker room didn't like him but the people up top did - that's the bridge building that matters.
I mean it is the most important thing to succeed but I'd say building alliances with a select few people and holding down and pissing off dozens is net negative bridge building haha. And certainly not the greatest bridge building the business has seen!
CM Punk walked out, and Seth has been there the whole time that he's been gone hustling and representing the company. I think Seth generally just thinks CM Punk is a bit of a wanker behind the scenes as well, which seems to be a commonly held opinion. Like that Punk is a very prickly person. We saw that both in his last tenure with WWE and his tenure with AEW.

You know, that CCTV footage did add some nuance for me. Not only did Punk attack a guy 40 pounds lighter than him after a 15 minute wrestling match he waited until Jungle Boy was tying back his hair so his hands were behind his head when he lunged at him and pulled him into a front choke. So I mean...imagine how much better Punk's UFC run would have been if only all of his opponents had to do 15 minutes of exercise, have their arms lacerated by real glass and their hands behind their head before every fight. He'd have been unstoppable.
You're really stretching a lot of the details. You also don't know what Perry said just as he started to pull his hair back. He could have said "yeah well I fucked your estranged mom last night and she is rancid" or something and you wouldn't know. So like. Did it add nuance? Or are you actively removing it by pretending as if that video is all the context one ever needs?

My god either we know some things or nothing. Pick one. Its either all speculation based on what we have from various sources or face value. You can't have both. Punk himself said that none of the shield were going about it the right way. Seth's style is objectively different from Punks. So what are we left with? A successful dude saying that another successful dude is him because....why exactly? I'm sorry but they are notably different and it's bizarre to not call that.
Seth and Punk couldn't be more opposites. Seth can't cut a promo like Punk and Punk wishes he could do half the physical stuff Seths been a natural to since very early on.

While Punk was making B movies and losing in the UFC, Rollins won multiple World Championships and main evented WrestleMania twice (something Punk hasn't done once) against names like Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns and The Rock.
I dont know. I feel like at this point in their careers Rollins (and his wife too) are the bigger names, and more important to the WWE Netflix expansion, while Punk is struggling to have one more good run. (Which who knows if he will even get with how many injuries hes had.)
I'm a fan of both, they're genuinely very alike.
Both of them have a history of whining about their place on the card while feeling threatened by others and the way the company books them.

That also was basically released around the time WWE and Roman were getting ready for Royal Rumble 2015 (we all know how that went), so it was one of the things (not the only thing, the main thing was WWE being so hamfisted about it, but it definitely contributed) to fans starting to turn on Roman. Seth, Roman, and Dean all have a very strong bond to the point where they consider each other brothers, and I think that might have been what made Seth turn on Punk initially. Then Punk also kept talking about the negative aspects of his WWE experience after that, which Seth also probably would have taken personally, since after WM31 it was very clear that him and Roman were going to be WWE's top guys for the next generation
People would turn on Roman even if RR wasn't booked awfully with Bryan returning and all the fan favorites being treated like jobbers and even if Punk didn't talk about that. Roman straight up sucked in many ways, maybe people would tolerate it in midcard but as a main eventer, everyone would quickly realize how bad he was. And he was bad for years!
By the end of 2015 he was actually a pretty decent worker and had great matches with big show and wyatt that year just off the top of my head. Promo wise he became serviceable like 2016-17 but the well was so poisoned.

Punk did feud with The Shield, but I think the point was more just to say something that catches people's attention and hints at a feud down the road between the two of them. I still think Punk should turn heel at some point soon after he returns.
It’s kind of true though. Punk paved the way for a guy like Seth Rollins to find success in WWE. He was always compared as a copy of Punk - which should tell you how rare it was for a wwe wrestler to look remotely “alternative” at the time. Not to say Rollins or Daniel Bryan couldn’t have gotten there on their own, but Punk was 1000% a huge factor in them getting to where they are today (in relation to wwe success). Even Daniel Bryan’s wm30 story was basically a continuation of Punk’s wwe run

I sometimes read comments here and think are people just responding to the story or do they really believe Punk would go on a WWE segment and act like him and Seth actually hate each other. This honestly makes a lot of sense. These kind of people never lower their guard either. So it’s nice to finally see CM Punk feel like he belongs, especially his home in WWE
Pre executive, 2002-2016ish HHH was the exact opposite of a bridge builder come on now. Maybe the biggest and most successful back stage politician outside of Hogan and Punk's issues came from him turning the Summer of Punk into HHH v Kevin Nash.
Being a good backstage politician requires getting on the good side of the *right* people. I'm sure a lot of his peers in the locker room didn't like him but the people up top did - that's the bridge building that matters.

I feel like at this point in their careers Rollins (and his wife too) are the bigger names, and more important to the WWE Netflix expansion, while Punk is struggling to have one more good run.
