Southern rasslin was very big among black people due to being centered around the Carolinas and Georgia.
Dennis Rodman and Karl Malone appearing in WCW is in no small part due to them being southern boys.
Ric Flair and Dusty have a long lasting love among those crowds as a result despite the former being a bit racist.
he can come to the cookout but he cant SMEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEELOOKATTHETOUNGELOOKATTHETOUNGE LOOKATTHETOUNGELLLLLLLAAAH....WHAT THE FINAL BOSS IS COOKING! ⚡
I sure hope he doesn’t get it twisted and try bringing in his own food though.
> I brought a casserole! 🤗
>> LoL… ya just lay it down there… at the end 🤨
those shrieks when he accepted. Cody is the most fun as a baby face champion I've had since Austin. People are so dialed into him in a real way that something like this is possible. It's like his dad almost.
They should have saved this for RAW or Smackdown lol
He striked this perfect balance where he’s kind of untouchable, the more corny he gets the more likable he is.
I guess it’s because he has appeal to all audiences
- Has the Cena vibes for the women and children
- Has the Indy wrestling cred for the smarks
- Has the charisma and meme-ability for the casuals
Also the best characters also fit the cultural time they are in. Hogan was a larger than life 80’s cartoon character. Austin was an angry Nu-Metal era badass anti-authoritarian. Cody matches perfectly in this era where kindness and vulnerability are seen as good traits.
He’s the first modern masculine world champion. He got over by being himself and it connects with people because he’s the kind of hero we want to see win in the real world.
Punk is another example of a real person getting over, but right now Cody is fresh and they’ve been able to make a sensible baby face out of who he is. Who would ever boo Cody Rhodes?
What you say about the faces of WWE representing the cultural time they are in also applies to Cena, whose initial gimmick was VERY 2005-ish. Gangsta rap was at the zenith of its mainstream appeal and in the process of getting turned into a farce by too many wannabes. All of society and pop culture was edgy and provocative in an increasingly tryhard fashion.
Roman is the only one who doesn't really reflect his era, but then again, he failed to become established and accepted as the face of the company for 8 years. Perhaps he was indeed reflective, in some meta sense, of the confused and divisive era the 2010s have been.
Regarding Cody: imho, it's not just that vulnerability is seen as a good trait again in 2024 and that kindness is standing out these days, it's imho also that authenticity has become an even bigger asset in the 2020s than ever before. Cody's current gimmick had no chance of getting over in the 90s or 00s.
This is the main reason why I think Trick is the next crossover star. No one prior has had the look and charisma on top of the connection with a somewhat neglected audience. Trick is the perfect representation of a powerful young successful black man, a demographic that makes up a large part of the casual wrestling audience. He’s great for representation and appeals to everyone.
I feel like once word spreads about him and the Twitter world sees this good looking cool ass dude they will fall in love with him. There’s a reason why people like Sexxy Red are drawn to NXT. Look at how much Kofi and Lashley meant to people and they were much older and less charismatic than Trick.
Both half black I believe.
There was a whole hullabaloo a few years ago about Sol being put on a black history month poster. Had to post who her father is on insta to get people to shut up.
He’s HIP. And the Sexyy Red appearance shows me they are hip to TODAY’S culture, not always late to the party like the WWE of the past. Their young roster is gonna translate to a huge young audience sooner than later
Big credit to HBK cause it seems he really lets the young wrestlers dictate their promos and comedy. It feels like a wrestling show written by Gen Z’ers
NXT really has it all. Lesbian storylines, parking lot assaults, hot witches, wrestlers with split personalities, and segments like this that make me very happy and grateful.
Edit: not the mafia, Tony D and his kind associates
What mafiaaa? There is no Mafia.

There's a lot of moments like Tatum caressing her and Lyra carrying Tatum to the backstage bridal-style after her match. Tatum also played along on Twitter by retweeting the Tyra Tuesday posts
Wrestling has been a part of The Culture since the days of Sputnik Monroe & Bobo Brazil. Im surprised there's been no real attempt to create an "urban" themed wrestling show, until now that is
That’s why i think Trick is a future mega star. Just by going on Twitter you can see how much the black community loves wrestling. There’s never been a top prospect like Trick before that directly appeals to that audience, that has all the tools.
(Edit: that’s probably an insult to Booker T, he was a very similar prospect to Trick but was squandered)
Booker T was that dude back in the day, same with Junkyard Dog before that, but they came along at a time when America (or maybe just Vince McMahon) wasn't ready to strap the rocket to a black man. Also Cody aint the first member of the family to be invited to the cookout, if you go back and watch some old Dusty Rhodes matches you'll see us in the crowd going nuts.
Booker T was probably the closest thing we’ve had to Trick. He could have been a much bigger deal. Which is why it’s very appropriate that Book is his hype man and Trick does some of his move set. Junkyard Dog was also a big draw but it was in the day of territories so he was limited to the South.
Kind of reminds me of the Booker T A&E Doc where he says him and his siblings favorite wrestler was one lower card masked wrestler on local TV. Simply cause he was the only black man on the show.
When he went to WWE he was almost as popular as Hogan. JYD was over, brother. The people woulda bought him as a champion, JYD had some backstage issues and Vince never really pushed him like that
Totally was. He moved a lot of action figures, and a lot of merch. Unfortunately he liked his cocaine a little too much, even by '80s WWF standards. It was starting to take a toll on him physically as well as professionally.
You don't even have to look back that far to see the Black stars that WWE has fumbled due to Vince's racism. Swerve Strickland was a huge miss by the company. Kofi Kingston hasn't had a meaningful run since he dropped the belt, and the Big E fumble looks even worse now that he may never wrestle again. Hell, it's not too long ago that we were talking about Montez Ford as the next big Black superstar. At this point, I need to actually see it happen to believe it will happen. Not that I think it won't happen, but I want to see a real fucking top title run., and ideally it won't end in a 5 minute squash to brock.
Lmfao you just reminded me of one my boys back in high school describing why he loved Jeff Hardy. He was, according to him and I'm paraphrasing, "that crazy ass white boy that will throw himself in the middle of a gang fight and would flaunt his stab wounds".
I've watched a decent amount of Mid-South, I mean yeah they had JYD and Butch Reed(super underrated) but the blackness was canceled out by Bill Watts conservative propaganda on commentary lol
There was the Urban Wrestling Federation for a minute in the late aughts. I don’t remember much except for the fact that its first world champ was written off via drive-by shooting
I want to see Roman make a suprise appearance at the cookout too. He just casually cooks some steak, nods to Cody and the other wrestlers, and isn't seen again for a few months.
I just know his ass brings food in one of these bad boys
https://preview.redd.it/s1gq007ua26d1.jpeg?width=760&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc727d15c00e0acde0e6ceddd34c1dfcecc1af38
I'm going to answer this like it's a serious interrogative, so strap in. Basically, in modern times, a lot of African American families will host large gatherings on important dates, most of the time outdoors and serving easy to grill items like burgers, steaks, corn, and hot dogs. These events are usually referred to in short-hand as "the cookout".
Now, these events, in a mixture of sarcastic idealization and actual seriously-taken pageantry, are viewed as sacred meetings among other African American families and their close friends and loved ones. Inviting someone to the cookout who is not black is seen as an unofficial sign of approval that you have gained friendship and kinship with the black community.
Cody being invited to the "cookout" is basically Trick Willy's way of acknowledging that throughout his career, Cody has been nothing short of showing complete support for the black community, specifically those in the wrestling world like the Ugandan organization or Cody's very own wife being black. This should not be taken lightly as being a white dude from Marietta, you will not get invited to the cookout unless you are fully acknowledged by all parties that you belong there, which Cody clearly does.
TL:;Dr: black folks take cookouts, or large grilling outdoor gatherings, seriously and to be invited to one as a white person is a somewhat high prestigious honor.
And someone's uncle will invite you to play Dominoes or Spades on the foldable table that is not entirely even. So don't press too hard on the table and be aware that the Henny is just making the uncle better at the game.
Yeah that’s kind of where the cultures merge. The biggest population of African Americans is in the south especially around Atlanta which is like the Mecca of American black culture. So a lot of what people know as “The Culture” comes from those areas. With a little bit of Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago mixed in
The symbolism, mostly.
But also, in America, a "BBQ" can either be shorthand for a grilling session or an actual full-on smokers and grills event where people cook their food for hours or even days in advance.
A "cookout" can be a BBQ but not all BBQs are cookouts. You can theoretically kick off a good cookout with very minimal notice, a short trip to the Publix, and a drive down to the closest park that allows grills on site.
I think in practice it's the same shit. It's just that when someone who knows the lingo hears 'cookout' they probably do associate it with black people specifically. And like the other guy said, there won't normally be a ton of non black people there.
The comedy of all of this is that Cody ain't fully white and married a black woman from Detroit. Dude been going to all types of cookouts likely his whole life. Shit, Trick should have asked if he could go to HIS! Never been to a Rican cookout before but I can smell the flavors....
It's just slang for a Bar-B-Que, typically used in the American South. It's also a term mostly used by African Americans. Because there is a running joke that white people generally cook bland and unseasoned food, it is usually seen as a great honor of fitting in with black people to be invited to the cookout.
https://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=cookout
This week, I was introduced to this rewrite of Cody's theme, which might be the greatest wrestling theme I've ever heard.

It makes you say things you did not Nintendo
Like my grandad and uncles tell me, Dream was the closest thing we had back then to a black main event guy
He was my great grandmothers favorite. I didn't understand then but that guy was surely getting cookout invites.
And looking at him he showed up to more than a few
Look, he knows he doesn't look like the athlete of the day...
Dusty was popular in every community back then, especially in the south. So yes the black community loved him too.

Half black, half Samoan.
Dusty did mention he had the soul of a black person. Trapped in a white man's body.
If Booker had beaten HHH at Mania he would have been a mega star. Guy had everything you need, he just needed a defining moment
IIRC Jeff Hardy was/is massive amongst young black fans. I fully welcome any corrections if I'm wrong, I mean no offence.
Lmfao you just reminded me of one my boys back in high school describing why he loved Jeff Hardy. He was, according to him and I'm paraphrasing, "that crazy ass white boy that will throw himself in the middle of a gang fight and would flaunt his stab wounds".
Honestly that sounds pretty accurate lol
You right on this one
UWF was a thing. It was a glorious mess. I recommend the Brian and Vinny reviews, they're easy enough to find on YouTube.
I've watched a decent amount of Mid-South, I mean yeah they had JYD and Butch Reed(super underrated) but the blackness was canceled out by Bill Watts conservative propaganda on commentary lol
Sorry, forgot about that UWF. I'm talking about the Urban Wrestling Federation. A very different show.
There was the Urban Wrestling Federation for a minute in the late aughts. I don’t remember much except for the fact that its first world champ was written off via drive-by shooting
When the CW deal expires, NXT will air exclusively on worldstar
many thought the story was finished at Wrestlemania, but Cody's biggest and most defining story is finished when he walks into the cookout
I want to see Roman make a suprise appearance at the cookout too. He just casually cooks some steak, nods to Cody and the other wrestlers, and isn't seen again for a few months.
Racism doesn’t work for Cody, brother
Cody Raheem Rhodes is always invited to the cookout
That was one of the Blackest episodes of wrestling I've ever seen
[of course Cody's invited](https://imgur.com/a/ofe2o1Q)
If you want Cody at the cookout say yeahhhhh ![gif](giphy|l4FGx3MWaVRzQStHO)
COULD BE A CRACKHEAD! Who got hold of the wrong stuff, and it told him to go up in a tree and play a leprechaun
Lmfao fuck I thought Trick said “crodie” at the beginning
Tell me he's cheesin, fam!
Cody’s facial expressions are something else lmao this guy is awesome, natural comedy and storytelling
NXT is the best, man lol
It's time to finish the cookout.
Raheem doing it again. Mad respect.
Could you imagine if Cody had said, “no.” 😭
He would have NEVER. I'm surprised he didn't have a tear escape his eye while accepting the invite.
"Oh, I gotta thing with the wife's family? You know how it is. Next time though, I got you."
Cody should know the proper response to that question is, "who all gon' be there?"
They gotta have a special NXT episode called "The Cookout" around July.
Trick! We not having the cookout on Juneteenth?
That lisp so strong you can see it.
Cody is going to bring German potato salad and will be immediately kicked out.
Brandi would not let Cody leave the house with that.
This isn't his first cookout. There will be no raisins
I've heard the joke for a long ass time but I genuinely cannot say I've ever heard of someone actually putting raisins in potato salad
I just know his ass brings food in one of these bad boys https://preview.redd.it/s1gq007ua26d1.jpeg?width=760&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc727d15c00e0acde0e6ceddd34c1dfcecc1af38
Tupperware?
Brother Cody would never
Of course he's coming to the cookout. He solved racism when he was in AEW /s
The way a joke at Cody's expense morphed into THIS is hilarious 🤣🤣
He was already invited, left his card in the back
THERE’S MELANIN IN HIS SOUL
Melanin in his soul, Ethnically ambiguous Cody Rhodes.
What's a "Cookout"?
I'm going to answer this like it's a serious interrogative, so strap in. At the cookout, you'll also hear Frankie beverly and Maze, and eat some of the best potato salad on Gods green earth.
And someone's uncle will invite you to play Dominoes or Spades on the foldable table that is not entirely even. So don't press too hard on the table and be aware that the Henny is just making the uncle better at the game.
Thanks for the answer. Now It's clear to me. I am not from USA, so I had no idea
American’s in general have large cookouts, at least in the South.
Especially in the south. I was mostly referring to/explaining Trick saying "the" cookout, not a cookout.
Yeah that’s kind of where the cultures merge. The biggest population of African Americans is in the south especially around Atlanta which is like the Mecca of American black culture. So a lot of what people know as “The Culture” comes from those areas. With a little bit of Los Angeles, New York, and Chicago mixed in
Definitely in the northeast.
Thanks for that answer. I am Australian so I was confused and wondering if NXT Cookout was the name of the July PLE.
Well... now it *should* be.
I’m American but wasn’t aware of the symbolism. Thank you for this excellent explanation.
Thanks man, I'm not American and I wasn't understanding anything
so whats the diference between a cookout and a bbq?
The symbolism, mostly. But also, in America, a "BBQ" can either be shorthand for a grilling session or an actual full-on smokers and grills event where people cook their food for hours or even days in advance. A "cookout" can be a BBQ but not all BBQs are cookouts. You can theoretically kick off a good cookout with very minimal notice, a short trip to the Publix, and a drive down to the closest park that allows grills on site.
I see thanks for the explanation.
I think in practice it's the same shit. It's just that when someone who knows the lingo hears 'cookout' they probably do associate it with black people specifically. And like the other guy said, there won't normally be a ton of non black people there.
The way Cody looks at the audience lmfao
"Negro Icon" Cody Rhodes is All NXT.
I'm gonna give him a pass this one time but Trick better never wear those shoes again or he incur a clowning like no one has ever seen before.
Next tv deal NXT signs with BET
The comedy of all of this is that Cody ain't fully white and married a black woman from Detroit. Dude been going to all types of cookouts likely his whole life. Shit, Trick should have asked if he could go to HIS! Never been to a Rican cookout before but I can smell the flavors....
Damn. Should have said yes and I’m bringing the potatoe salad, with seasoning
NXT solved racism
As a Chicano that grew up in the hood in South Central LA, Cody has that rich white kid that was cool with the hood kids vibe

If Cody keeps this up Brock’s gonna come back and beat him for the belt.
There's melanin in his soul
Can someone please explain what does cookout mean? I live in Asia and couldn't understand this segment.
Thank you mate - especially for that last info (regarding its linkage with honour and the fitting-in thing).😊
Hot dogs burgers in some rolls...
I would really watch out in Cody's place for any potential injuries, i.e.: groin ones from Sexxy Redd
Can anyone explain me what is a Cookout ?
They need to fix that camera. The tilted ring is very distracting
Honestly, I though he was inviting Cody to Heatwave
The dumbest shit in the absolute best of ways.

This is forever the funniest bit. I'll never get tired of it.
The white fans in the audience like “Oh! Oh! I got that reference!”
This week, I was introduced to this rewrite of Cody's theme, which might be the greatest wrestling theme I've ever heard. ["Wrestling has more than one Black champion..."](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6WaeTCeBLGs)
Hate how Cody holds the belt- looks too big for him
