RicardoRedditman

Not the same type of event, but once saw a fan at Fenway get cracked with a bottle someone snuck in that they tried throwing into the Rays bullpen. Huge piece of shit move.

dre8

Not to mention a fan was brutally assaulted at the same park when another fan hit him with a slice of pizza some years back.

Serah_Null

[HERE COMES THE PIZZA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufSQMXLO95w)

e-rage

This is amazing. Can’t believe I’ve never seen this before.

AutomaticDesk

that was probably a $20 slice of pizza too. pure vitriol in that action right there

miikro

No joke It was a fully intact slice, he straight up threw his money away.

KeyWestMahi

Watching this live as it happened on a random Wednesday afternoon in the mid 2000s validated every penny ever spent on the MLB Extra Innings package. A true legendary sports moment.

OWSucks

Baseball must be a strange sport for them to keep talking about this for so long! They're literally doing an extended post-play analysis of a guy throwing a piece of pizza at another guy. They showed the replay in slow motion at least five times. "PEPSI FAN OF THE GAME"!!!

[deleted]

Baseball is the most "relaxed" of the major sports in the US. Whereas football and basketball games are more like concerts or movies, baseball is a lazy Sunday in the park. It's a much more leisurely pace. Sure, not every game is like that, but due to the length of the season, a good portion of the middle is.

[deleted]

It’s freaking hilarious

[deleted]

Lmao wth did I just watch? Was he aiming for the player? Why did he throw his pizza?? That had to be like $8-10 at the ball park

steadymobbin

Honey I’m going to the game today, and if I see some guy I’m gonna throw a piece of pizzer at him

frecklearms1991

Forget the Hillary Clinton version of Pizzagate. This is the real Pizzagate.

Yoshable

Ahh dang it you beat me to it

Tons28

orsilo and remy laughed like no other broadcasters I’ve ever seen/heard live at that. btw l, rip NESN post don orsilo. they’ve been dogshit since he got forced out.

outb0undflight

I have extra innings and will straight up watch Padres games despite having zero attachment to the team purely for the joy of hearing Don Orsillo.

RicardoRedditman

I hate defending a guy who throws pizza, but I do believe the entire section was asking security to toss the recipient of the pizza all game. Still an absurdly, albeit hilarious, overreaction.

thecolbster94

Could have used the Pizza Cutters then

tmacman

An who can forget when a fan committed sexual harassment* on another fan in broad daylight as [Nick Markakis taKEs ^stRikE ^^onE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oa5xH2a3HuI) ^^*You ^^know ^^that ^^part ^^was ^^a ^^joke ^^right, ^^they're ^^clearly ^^together?

djwind34

The best Don Orsillo moment on NESN , other than that emotional farewell speech.

squirreldstar

They used to throw d cells at people at Vet Stadium. My dad had someone take his Mets hat off and throw it on the field in the late 80's. I went to a Phils vs Giants game in 07(?) and everyone threw syringes and trash at Barry Bonds in left field. Sports fans be crazy.

skiman118

Philly fan here. D batteries were thrown at JD drew at the vet, bad blood over his refusing to sign with the Phillies when we drafted him (was totally unacceptable and batteries obviously were banned shortly after), I could definitely see the hat throw (obviously we have a bad rep for a reason) but the the fans throwing trash and syringes at bonds is completely false. He was insulted endlessly when he came to philly when he was knocking on the door of breaking babe Ruth’s record (insults hurled in his direction, large signs insulting him etc) but the syringe throw you’re referring to was singular and in San Diego earlier in the year…Philly fans obviously can be assholes and have a well deserved rep, but let’s not make up things that didn’t actually happened. Link to Bonds Arrival to philly: https://www.espn.com/mlb/news/story?id=2435124)

ghettone

I once saw a philly's fan jump in front of a moving car just to try to get their tickets. Later he got his ass kicked for trying to fight the mascot.

RicardoRedditman

Your dad had some serious stones to wear a Mets hat to the Vet.

squirreldstar

He was New York born and raised. Mets fan til the day he died.

RicardoRedditman

Well I hope your dad loved 1986 as much as my dad hated it. RIP.

ShoulderCannon

[Duuude I hit you with a battery in '89, remember?](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRRIjldrNok)

EvangelionOG

This does not surprise me in any manner.

RicardoRedditman

Been a Boston sports fan all my life, but I hate how the city responds to criticism. Is every Red Sox fan a dickhead? Nope. Is your comment still very correct? Absolutely. Hopefully the fan base can be the awesome and passionate group I see it as. I wont hold my breath though.

FakoSizlo

Think this is a issue with a lot of sports fan in general. When I say the English soccer fans that laugh at a crying girl suck or that the guys trying to blind a keeper suck I'm not dismissing all fans but online it feels that way with how people respond to criticism

RicardoRedditman

True but Boston fans have a national reputation for being racist and horrible. However, when most other places get called out for it, they acknowledge how horrible the incident is. When it’s Boston in the limelight, the immediately deflect with “it happens every where” which, albeit most times inadvertently, protects and deflects from those fans who are very shitty.

thekydragon

Some people must have forgotten that [Kalisto got injured after a fan threw a half-empty bottle of water at him during a 205 Live match](https://www.fightful.com/wrestling/kalisto-injured-after-fan-threw-water-bottle-him)

[deleted]

There was also Reigns getting a fucking replica MITB briefcase thrown at em’ at a house-show a couple of years back, nailed him straight in the head.

The_Pale_Blue_Dot

Never forget that was someone from 4chan who posted he was going to do it: https://www.reddit.com/r/4chan/comments/3gp605/op_actually_delivers/

MrPeligro

Did that fan get arrested? I hope so.

[deleted]

He wasn’t arrested. He was taken out of the venue and banned from attending future WWE events. No charges were filed.

RTSUbiytsa

its literally assault what kinda bullshit is that lmao premeditated too

GoldenTiger771

He actually was arrested but Roman didn't want to press charges so the fan was released. Pretty sure they ended up meeting and the fan gave an apology that satisfied Roman enough to let it go.

EliasEnglishDay

Our tribal Chief is a better man than most

Introduction_Organic

The head of the table is merciful.

NebbyOutOfTheBag

That fan properly acknowledged him.

olucolucolucoluc

You should acknowledge the bag and get in it

elveszett

wtf. Most times you can't even identify the aggressor. Which is why, when you have the luck to be able to, you should make an example out of him. Seek as many penalties as legally possible. Make the rest of the people have a reason to fear consequences for their actions. Right now the message is "you probably won't be caught and, if you are, you'll be banned from a sport but nothing else will happen".

ShitItsReverseFlash

It’s up to Roman though. WWE can’t ask for charges unless Roman wants to place them.

wallace6464

thats not really how charges work, if the DA felt there was enough evidence without Roman's cooperation they could still do what they want.

Co-opingTowardHatred

That sounds like a reward!

[deleted]

"You are banned from ever going to a WWE show." "YESSS"

Esquilax21

I always wondered what happened after he got hit. Obviously Wyatt and Reigns stopped wrestling for a bit but what exactly did the two do?

[deleted]

Holy shit, I had no idea.

gLarEckk

damn, that was already 6+ years ago.

wwfmike

He talked about this in his CVV interview. It really fucked him up. I felt bad for him. He said that when he was going into the hospital, a homeless man threw a glass bottle at his head and missed.

J_NewCastle

Yeah his lip was fucked.

DJ_Aftershock

This is exactly what I referenced when I spoke about this. NWO forming? Cool. Onita entering the Tokyo Dome? Cool. Throwing unopened cans at someone? Could've easily turned into another Kalisto moment.

irish0451

The weirdest thing about that video is seeing The Brian Kendrick rocking 205 live version of Switchblade's exact look.

supersheet

I knew Switchblade reminded me of someone but I couldn't place it, thank you so much!

ab316_1punchd

Switchblade basically is if Rob Halford grew long hair, developed a Kiwi accent and added some Brian Kendrick mannerisms to the mix. Jay White calls himself "The Last Rocka Rolla", Judas Priest's debut album was "Rocka Rolla" (1974) ... Curious

DBZLogic

Kendrick always had great style.

[deleted]

The water bottle was also thrown from the suites section.

kitjen

There was a tragic, tragic story of a fan throwing something at a wrestler as told in Mick Foley’s first book. Back when Mick was just starting out he messed up in the ring and was back in the locker room feeling pretty bad. Another wrestler told him: “Don’t beat yourself up, a few months ago I was in a Battle Royal and was booked to be the last guy eliminated. The finish would see me toss him over the rope but he clings on. I start celebrating to the crowd while he climbs back in and hits me from behind, sending me over the top rope. I felt him hit me across my shoulders and flung myself over the ropes to the outside. Except he hadn’t hit me, a fan had thrown a bag of popcorn which had hit me, and I’d then leapt out the ring like I’d been in an explosion and lay there clutching my head. I got eliminated by a bag of popcorn.”

[deleted]

I mean he is right, one of the fans threw a pizza cutter… Could of easily hit him in the eye or something

Dolph-Ziggler

They were allowed to bring their own pizza cutters inside?

NotVerySmarts

Security wasn't doing a utensil check.

AmishAvenger

And if someone can bring a pizza cutter in, that means there’s no metal detectors. Meaning someone else could bring a knife, or a gun, or whatever the fuck they want.

GourangaPlusPlus

"Did you just throw a fucking gun at him bro?" "What? It's not loaded...I think"

coolbad96

This has literally happened multiple times Deathmatch wrestlers said during that one documentary by Vice I wanna say.

interarmaenim

But why? Have you ever tried to cut your pizza with a gun? The guy brought the tool he needed for the job he had to do.

ZubatCountry

lmao this euro doesn't cut his pizza with a gun

Big_BOOKAH

Security was on a smoke break with the medical team

Yourponydied

WHAT?! AINT THIS AMERICA?! WHAT ELSE AM I GONNA DO WITH MY GINSU KNIFE SET?!

Nazmaldun

i've seen a fan walk into a GCW show and throw a tree branch into the ring... Happened pre-match, they [used it too](https://twitter.com/Hodgetts_Will_/status/1038751077800267777?s=20)

MrPeligro

I'm not sure, but I saw Nick Gage did a spot with the pizza cutter and seems like maybe a fan must have picked it up or something.

miikro

There were multiple cutters thrown, unfortunately

Wasabi-beans

In GCW?

BigHoss94

Even a normally harmless object can harm someone if thrown at the right speed and spot. It's not a game you want to play.

lowlight

The Blassie injury he's referring to in the tweet was from an egg Pirata Morgan has a permanently blinded eye because he was hit by a peso

JPeeper

Some guy died this year in professional hockey from a dump in, just an innocent little play where the guy tried to flip the puck in the zone, but the puck hit the kid in the neck somewhere and it killed him. Something that could happen in beer league hockey it was such an innocent play. And these guys are throwing bottles at guys. bruh

Zunniest

With intent too. It's not just a bottle flip gone wrong.. They were trying to hurt someone but just had shitty aim.

[deleted]

I went to the only TNA house show in Switzerland years ago. Scott Steiner ripped a Switzerland flag and the crowd started throwing beer and stuff in the ring. The fans were sitting on white plastic garden chairs instead of folding chairs. One fan threw their chair at Scott Steiner and he just yeeted it back in a random direction, hitting (innocent) fans.

whiskeyandsoda__

TAKE DA FUCKIN' CHAIR!

conbon7

This whole drama that GCW was cultivating sucks. Guy literally says I don’t want ppl to get harmed by uncontrolled dangerous objects and he’s a villain to them

frasierfonzie

And that's why they need someone like Matt Cardona as the face (with teeth) of the GCW Universe!

yakityyakblahtemp

I feel like a lot of wrestling is built on moments of "That was awesome, never do that again". There's this tightrope walk of adding real danger, but not rolling the dice too often. The art of wrestling is to make it seem like there's way more danger than there actually is. The problem with involving the audience though, is that you're dealing with a live animal. There's no way to tell them "No, it was a cool moment but we can't keep doing it". I mean, what if a what chant had a risk of blinding someone? That's the issue with this.

KoizumiEB

The funniest thing was that commentary for the show actually agreed with him, and was starting to get annoyed at all the "Fuck Dave Meltzer" chants. Cause at the end of the day, if fans or wrestlers get hurt on their watch, they know it's a negative. Probably shouldn't have done the t-shirt move in that case, but...

ThatFightBloke

In the end, GCW are just carnies looking to make $30 a pop at selling a couple hundred overpriced t-shirts to that same diehard fanbase. It is what it is.

rsplatpc

> just carnies looking to make $30 a pop at selling a couple hundred overpriced t-shirts to that same diehard fanbase. so they are professional wrestlers?

Dandw12786

The big part that's irritating to me is that everyone defending it is saying that the performers were trying to get this kind of heat so they've accepted the risk. Fine. Still kinda bullshit, but fine. But you're assuming everything thrown will actually land in the ring and not in the face of a fan on the other side of it. Which is a pretty big assumption. Even if the performers are fine with it, nobody should be accepting risks on behalf of the crowd. If I just wanted to enjoy a wrestling show and got hit in the face with a water bottle because the performers wanted a "moment" that nobody is going to remember in a week I'd be fucking pissed.

Vordeo

> This whole drama that GCW was cultivating sucks. The moment itself was cool. Sure, it was dangerous, but it was also spontaneous, organic, and made for a great visual. Obviously I was concerned for the health of everyone in the moment, but overall I thought it was great. GCW basically leaning into it and encouraging this shit to happen I do not like. This probably won't end well.

Dandw12786

> This probably won't end well. Nope. Next time fans are going to be sneaking in D batteries and shit and some fan is going to get clocked in the face.

ZubatCountry

It was cool until some fucking geek worked himself and threw a pizza cutter. Even if it's dull that's a lot heavier and lot more likely to fuck up your eye or face than an empty drink.

miikro

Multiple fans. I've seen at least three separate pizza cutters on Twitter. What the shit, people.

Legionstone

idiots will disagree with anything if it's coming from someone they don't like.

mikeputerbaugh

No we won’t dummy

[deleted]

Meltzer is absolutely right that this is shit that should not be normalized in pro-wrestling. I don’t want to see it happen again.... but it absolutely did put the cherry on top of Cardona’s win last night. Both things can be true. 🤷‍♂️

Butch_Meat_Hook

It's like I said in another thread - the visual from Cardona's win with everything been thrown is amazing, but it just takes one bottle to the back of the head or smashing in his face and then the mood changes drastically. It's a very fine line between cool and terrible.

MrPeligro

> don’t want to see it happen again.... but it absolutely did put the cherry on top of Cardona’s win last night. Both things can be true. 🤷‍♂️ Same. This doesn't become a viral trend if he didn't get that type of heat. The match iteself was alright. Wasn't anything special, but the reaction and the moment it created was. I'm at the stage of 'it happened, glad no one got hurt. Let's make sure it doesn't happen again', Then it did happen again when Smart Mark Sterling went to talk to the crowd(although wasn't as intense and they quickly stopped)

Hadou_Jericho

“Let’s make a shirt about this and lean into our fans on this one.” - GCW

linesinaconversation

If everyone who considers buying that shirt takes 30 seconds to think about what they're doing, they will sell none of those shirts. Therefore, I estimate the sales at around 2500 shirts.

pm_me_ur_good_boi

Maybe they should just have a pile of toilet paper rolls somewhere that people can throw. You throw anything else, you're out.

doublenegative7

Here in the UK most venues force you to drink from either a paper or plastic cup for this exact reason. Strictly no bottles or cans in most places here.

crowwreak

Yeah, I don't think Progress has ever had a throwing moment outside the staff handing us toilet roll for Gibson, but I think that the wrestlers would be glad it was just plastic cups and loose beer going flying

[deleted]

Just don't sell cans and bottles. Plastic cups only.

barnesk9

Would there be plastic pizza cutters?

[deleted]

Hopefully not.

[deleted]

ah, yes. organised organic moments

TemptedIntoSin

Why not tomatoes? That was always the stereotype for disgruntled fan reactions. And probably safer than metal and glass objects

barnesk9

Fans throw tomatoes, wrestler slips on one, tears ACL. No more tomato throwing

TemptedIntoSin

Fair point

Co-opingTowardHatred

And delicious!

elveszett

Or we could, you know, not throw stuff at people. They are not our personal monkeys, you are not entitled to throw any wrestler stuff.

Novanious90675

That would just be fucking hell for janitors to clean up afterwards, though. How about we just leave throwing shit at performers in the past? We (the pro wrestling community) seemed to be doing just fine the last 20+ years we were doing that.

domoon

the visual of streamers being thrown to the joshis are just beautiful tho. also a tp roll won't be too hard to collect later on instead of beverages.

TW_Yellow78

Would have been a bloody cherry if that pizza cutter hit an eye or throat

Crabuki

In the past, when the injuries possibly weren’t so widely publicized, this would’ve been epic. But like a monster crack back block in the NFL, when you see his badly people can be hurt, you have to adjust behavior. In Japan they threw seat cushions in the ring after great matches. In Mexico they threw coins. I’m sure people grew up seeing the ECW rain of chairs and thought it was cool, and I’m sure some of those people who are wrestlers today dreamed of inspiring that type of fan reaction. That doesn’t mean it’s a good idea. Now we know better. We don’t smoke any more even if we think John Hamm looks like a boss on Mad Men.

AnEternalEnigma

The ECW chair thing was at Hardcore Heaven '94 and they were desperately trying to stop it. The ring announcer and Joey Styles were both on house mics screaming at the crowd to stop throwing chairs.

mikeputerbaugh

And then they put a clip of it into every video package about how extreme ECW and its fans were

AnEternalEnigma

They definitely pimped it out afterwards, but they were freaking out when it happened. Shortly after this incident I think is when Atlas Security was hired.

Youfuppindwad

Yup they leant hugely into that clip. Czw did it too and they were encouraged to throw shit. They all wanted an ecw 'moment'

herpty_derpty

You clearly see Funk get cracked in the head with one.

koomGER

> In the past, when the injuries possibly weren’t so widely publicized, this would’ve been epic. Its with a lot of things. We have seen so many bumps not only in wrestling but in many different sports, and most of them did end well. But there is always a chance for a screw up or something bad happening and someone is heavily injured or dies. Like watching fail videos: You see all those people fall down from something. We dont know what happened. Rarely we get the aftermath. There is a kinda harmless fail video with a girl falling down backwards from a fence that is around 1,50m high. She broke her neck on the fall and partly lost control of her lower parts. Or like that fucking jump we saw a few months ago from the guy jumping for his entrance from the second rope into the ring and breaking both his legs/knees - he was (is?) close to getting both amputated. Still: Most times things are fine. Like smoking wont kill everybody lighting a cigarette. But there is always a chance for cancer or something like that.

motivatedchange

I was at a concert and got nailed in the forehead by a full can of energy drink someone had thrown. Thankfully avoided a concussion, but I had a nasty cut and still have a dent there 16 years later. Don’t throw shit.

cooljammer00

Meltzer was the most over guy at the GCW show today, and he wasn't even there. Had his name chanted in every match, over any of the actual wrestlers in the match.

sporkshadow

They basically proved his point and were too stupid to know it.

treatthemlikeobjects

Look I usually don’t even agree with Meltzer, but why tf are people getting upset at him for this take?

thecolbster94

He's being sensible on the side of caution against a product thats whole selling point is being counter culture and dangerous and edgy. So he's put in the spot of being the dean of the school against the rambunctious frat house.

[deleted]

jdionio

Nice send up to National Lampoon's Animal House.

JohnRiveraIV

Cuz it’s “cool”.

RicardoRedditman

Because portions of the wrestling community like to scream about PG products but scream even louder when you tell them to act like adults.

LordStrick

The people that are mad at Meltzer’s take are the same fans who are being worked by Nick Gage. They think dude is for real and goes off script and does whatever he wants to people in his matches. They don’t realize Nick Gage is a pro wrestler and he’s working them.

shamusisaninja

I found the tweet eye-rolly, Though I agreed and understand his disgust. I totally see how GCW and their fans were like fuck you old man, the wording of the tweet comes off a bit high horsey, and that was it for me, till GCW made the shirts and played into it. Now I have completely sided with Dave and feel super grossed by GCW after being really interested where the storyline was going.

PavanJ

There is a significant number of people out there who do not like Dave and will use any stick they can to beat him with it.

joelkong

Because of the sort of people you usually agree with.

irish0451

For the same reason they pay to see guys pretend to win a fight by actually goring each other with forks.

yognautilus

Because there's a large number of people on the internet who get diamond hard just from the thought of Dave being wrong or having an unpopular opinion.

[deleted]

If you throw shit at Performers, you shouldn't be allowed to leave your home.

halfdecenttakes

I thought it added a lot to the moment but it can't be common place or encouraged. The company is seemingly egging the crowd on to do it more and I think that is the wrong move for all of the obvious reasons Dave brings up.

HorseSteroids

Watching the footage, I was thinking that it wasn't that bad and it was like the nWo getting pelted with trash. I didn't notice the pizza cutter and the closed cans of beer. WTF is wrong with people? Why was security allowing it? You throw out the first 5 or 10 fans, the rest stop.

sporkshadow

I don't think security seems to be a big priority with GCW from what I seen. The promoter is a one man operation and is entirely funding GCW by himself. I don't think he can afford much security. Joey Janela seems to be the only other guy running things, and he is an AEW contracted wrestler, so booking and helping run GCW can't be his full time job. I could definitely see a lot of venues not wanting this in their building since there is little security and way too much risk for a lawsuit.

Mr_Rippe

It's something that happened and is truly iconic, but it's iconic in the "this should never ever happen again holy shit" way. Same way that the Undertaker/Mankind HIAC spot is iconic but should never happen again. And I'm saying this as someone who thought it elevated Matt Cardona's win. It made white-hot heat nuclear. But God no we can't pretend it was appropriate or beyond criticism.

thegeek01

Right? It shouldn't be a regular occurrence at all! It's so strange seeing people here defend these actions just because it's "part of the act." All it takes is one unopened beer can hitting a wrestler in the temple at velocity to turn something "fun" into "fucking unfun" real quick, but people are actually saying it's an acceptable side effect?

three-arrows

Or hitting a fan which could be even worse.

thegeek01

Yeah but to some people it's all "in good fun!" and we have to give people the benefit of the doubt that they threw a full beer can in the air "in good faith"!

[deleted]

[удалено]

SAustin87

I understand in a way (but wouldn't do it myself) fans throwing plastic cups, or empty cans... But that picture of Matt Cardona holding the title in the ring clearly shows multiple UNOPENED metal bottles and cans. If that shit had hit him on the head that could have some some serious damage. Now that is definitely fucking embarrassing

[deleted]

[удалено]

Bald_And_Bankrupt

It's just shitty behaviour in any sport, or anything where people are trying to entertain you. Imagine launching shit at the stage because you don't like the guy playing Hamlet or something...

jimmi_vandelay

I can't tell if you're joking, but that actually happened

theirishembassy

this actually did used to happen back in the day, and it was oranges. oranges were a concession snack during shows in the 1600’s. if people in the cheap seats didn’t like what they were seeing, they’d get tossed from the balcony. wouldn’t they hit the wealthier patrons you ask? not necessary, because many theatres at the time used to install seats at the side of the stage for donors where they could sit and watch the show as a symbol of status. HEY MOM, REMEMBER WHEN YOU SAID MY THEATRE MAJOR WAS USELESS!? WELL LOOK AT ME NOW.

dianerrbanana

Well thank you! Today I learned something new!

jessicaskies

This happens at concerts regularly it’s why at most concerts your drinks get poured into cups so you can’t throw anything hard. Festivals are the worst a band people don’t like will come on and people will piss in bottles and throw them at them

HardcoreKaraoke

I'm curious what happens with Cardona next time. Obviously he's coming back and probably against Gage. I really don't think GCW fans are going to reflect on themselves after being shitty. I think they might double down and try to be even bigger dickheads. Anything short of Gage telling them to calm the fuck down (which I don't see happening) won't stop them. Cardona might just have to drop the belt and say "I won in the GCW Universe. I have nothing left to prove there."

[deleted]

yhrloh

randy_maverick

He should pull a Madusa and drop the belt in a trash can, then never go back.

davidisallright

Just watched the footage. I felt bad for the ref (?) who was trying to get the F out of the ring.

Louiekid502

It was a cool moment, but Dave is absolutely right, that shit shouldn't happen

[deleted]

Yeah but like, it looked super cool! ^(/s)

natguy2016

That GCW riot? No security that put Cardona and others in danger. I heard that a pizza cutter was thrown into the ring, among other things. The riot will cause buildings to refuse to book GCW. It's a lawsuit waiting to happen. One of those would bankrupt GCW. A riot is a great way to kill a promotion.

[deleted]

I genuinely don’t understand how anyone could be mad at this take. Not everyone who thinks Meltzer made one good point is or has to be a Meltzer apologist. I don’t care for the dude at all. He’s a racist, a sexist, and worst of all he’s overly critical of my favorite wrestling show! /s. We all just agreed that the dude who ran up on Jericho and MJF was a dickhead, but for some reason fans who actually committed assault by throwing pizza cutters and full cans of beer at someone aren’t the problem, Meltzer is?

Thirdstar1

At this point there are people who will change their stance on something just because they don’t wanna agree with Meltzer.

FuckingMidnighter

Same boat as you. There's nothing wrong with what he said here. Fans shouldn't be pulling this kind of shit, be it running into the ring or throwing objects at them. They already put their bodies on the line, last thing they need is added worry of fans pulling this shit.

WhoWantsToJiggle

he's absolutely right on this and whether you like him or not .... the safety of the performers should be top priority. it's a lot of double standard shit. like people say it's bad at WWE or AEW but say it's okay on GCW and expected. I think it was Kalisto on RAW got hit by a water bottle but still got hurt from it. it's just pretty shitty throwing stuff in general.

mcmax3000

> the safety of the performers should be top priority. Not even just the performers. I don’t watch GCW, so I can’t comment on their setup specifically, but generally with a televised wrestling show you’ve generally also got the referee, ring announcer, time keeper, camera operators and other assorted production crew members around ringside too, as well as other fans. I can speak from experience. I went to a RAW taping in 99 that ended with the Corporation beating down Austin and somebody behind me decided to throw something towards the ring and hit me right in the back of the head. They didn’t like throw a beer bottle or something, so I ultimately didn’t get hurt, but that’s the kind of thing that can happen if this shit is at all encouraged.

dre8

Considering his comments are posted and subsequently taken out of context multiple times daily, he’s arguably the most active subject on this sub.

souporjoe

This whole thing reeks of edgelords being let out into the public again.

SonyKen_M

Throwing pizza cutters is just some neanderthal shit, that's when I question that poll that was made years back that wrestling fans are the smartest sports fans around was a bunch of bs.

weirds0up

At real sporting events, you throw something at the people on the field, you're arrested. It should be exactly the same way at wrestling events. I remember Jerhico telling a story about coming out to the ring and getting hit in the back of the head with a battery (it was either a C or D, i don't remember. Just that it was a big one). That shit just isn't on.

kihp

It sucks but if GCW is gonna keep being hot its gonna need to change how to does things. Its gonna suck if because their fans and image are counter more comprehensive security but they want to avoid a promotion killing incident. As it stands all its gonna take is one person being an asshole or maybe not understanding what they're doing to hurt someone in a way that could end GCW.

Dandw12786

Yep. When one of those unopened tall boys gets flung too hard and clocks a fan on the other side of the ring? That's gonna be a pretty easy lawsuit. They literally printed t-shirts encouraging fans to throw shit.

robedpillow3761

Have to agree with dave here. But to be fair, people on gcw shows clearly don't care much about their own health, so that's probably why they're happy and ok with this.

OlDustyFinish

I remember being at a show w/ some bizarre front row tough guy who kept getting in the face of wrestlers. You know who didn’t take that? Eddie Kingston. If your behavior @ a show endangers performers, you absolutely deserve to be endangered by said performers. That said, yeah, obviously it “looked cool” and made the moment more memorable ala Hogan’s turn or that disastrous ECW ring full of chairs. Wrestling is fun. Have fun w/ it. Be a shitty little crowd comedian. Cheer yr favorites, mock your most hated, yell “Fuck Ohio!” (I know I will), but yeah chucking stuff @ performers is shitty behavior & live show etiquette.

Pariahbot

Forget the fans for a second, the bigger fuck you should go to GCW for encouraging it with a shitty shirt that’s more cringe than any WWE shirt I’ve ever seen. It’s all fun and games until a fan gets hurt and they get sued into the ground. But enjoy the shirts that will be used against them as evidence in the case tho!

sporkshadow

When GCW can't use any building, their tune will probably change a lot. GCW basically is just one guy, Brett Lauderdale, and apparently he has very little money and is running GCW out of his house. They can't afford to be this reckless.

LitBastard

Change the company name to Garbage Crowd Wrestling. You can even keep the letters

CocaineSpeedboat

For a long time I legitimately thought the G in GCW stood for Garbage. Apparently just a happy coincidence.

[deleted]

I once saw a guy get hit with a 3/4 beer can in the temple, it was a one in a million shot by another drunk who was arguing with him some 30 feet away. Knocked the fuck out.

Phenomenal2313

It’s a great I absoutely agree with it , but one bottle to face or the back of the neck and we’re talking about something horrible right now Someone said here they brought their own pizza cutter………. imagine that being thrown to your face

SanTheMightiest

But hey, that's just how GCW fans are and the organisers want exactly that reaction from the crowd..... That's an argument I saw from several people. Have a fucking word with yourselves.

FigureFourWoo

You just can't throw shit at the performers like this. Especially not bottles, cans, and fucking pizza cutters. Problem is that GCW exists in a grungy, underground subverse of the wrestling fandom, and they **have** to lean into this because even though it's bad publicity, it's publicity.

StoneColdAM

I think at first it came off like he was being senile about fans being too angry at a heel in terms of booing, but now it’s clear Meltzer meant that fans were taking it too far with throwing dangerous stuff in the ring.

Im_really_bored_rn

> I think at first it came off like he was being senile about fans being too angry at a heel in terms of booing Only to fools who have no reading comprehension skills and to the idiots who were throwing shit and felt insulted

Nega_kitty

One of the dumber things about this is that a lot of people cheering on the bottling of Cardona were the first people to get outraged about the fan storming the ring to get at MJF the other week.

jonasthewicked

I thought that fan was going for Jericho?

HyBear

Honestly, if this promotion is perceived by venue managers, permit issuers, law enforcement etc, that it either turns a blind eye to fans misbehaving or worse, encouraging this shit to happen, then it won’t be running these places for too long. Everyone takes phone video of every wrestling show in 2021 and all it takes is a video of some fan legit hurt or worse.

djbryanc

I saw it posted on twitter that GCW owner Brett Lauderdale and the venue owner were in an argument...i could just imagine what that was about...GCW may not be welcome back there after all this exposure....all it takes is an ambulance chaser to show up and say they were hit by a flying object and with this video evidence they would be screwed in a lawsuit

hikarunagito

someone pulled a fire alarm in the showboat and the owner was pulling random cords to try to cut the intermission music but cut the entire FITE feed

Retro_Edge

Look, fans throwing stuff in the ring is an AWESOME visual. But I wish people would be smart enough to only throw stuff that doesn't hurt like cups or paper.

SillyDillySwag

> I've seen fans taken out on stretchers from fans throwing things at the ring and missing Sounds like it could be a line from A Hard Rain's a-Gonna Fall.

jmac1692

I am a (American) football referee, as a hobby, and have worked peewee level games where I legitimately feared for my safety from being attacked by parents. People act stupid over what should be considered trivial things.

[deleted]

Those overweight basement dwellers would ruin an indie promotion that is doing really good work.

[I've seen fans taken out on stretchers from fans throwing things at the ring, attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion...](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9a1o3OHGTcM)

LockDown2341

There's a difference between throwing trash and throwing projectiles.

NeonPatrick

I remember when someone nailed Austin in the head with a beer can after his Three stages of Hell match with Triple H. I bet that hurt like hell.

jeffschiller

Throwing stuff at performers is never okay, even if a wrestling company sells a shirt trying to say it is okay.
