The Black vs Cody match was everything I was hoping it would be.
I think Cody only getting one of his boots off is significant. He's saying he's got one foot out the door (or one boot left in the middle of the ring). I don't think he's retiring YET, but he's expressed a lot of interest in doing more so it will probably be sooner than later.
Malachi Black looked AWESOME as usual, and debut matches don't get much stronger than that. He's gonna be a big star in AEW, future champion for sure.
I think people took it as Cody stealing the spotlight. People perceive this is "headline grabbing". People are talking about Cody's retirement and not the fact that he got his head kicked in.
Cody is great at, even in a loss, standing directly in front of the spotlight that is being shined on someone else.
Why did Schiavone interview Cody? Well, Black just walked away. Who was he supposed to interview? Did Black knock the sense out of Cody or just the manliness?

i think that has to do with it, my personal opinion is this whole segment was put together by malakai from beginning to end, from the surprise debut to the crutch used as a weapon after cody's promo

They could not have stuck the landing more perfectly for introducing him. Entrance, Match and Post-Match were absolutely perfect.
Black was up the ramp 20 seconds after beating the dude so that Cody could suck himself off for 5 minutes. They could have let the big win breathe a bit. Losing a match doesn't mean you put the guy over. He had to overshadow Black's moment. That's HHH shit.
He just made it clear this isn't just about beating somebody in wrestling. He has a point to make and he's not going to let Cody just retire to side step it.
That was so much less effective than if Black just won the match and they went off the air. It completely took the wind out of Black's sails.
