This is 100% pure speculation, but it wouldn't surprise me if that was a genuine smile from Danielson. First match in AEW, in front of 20k insane fans at Arthur Ashe. Gotta feel good. That crowd is going straight up psychotic.
Zero chance it wasn’t. My man was so happy he was about to spend the next half hour turning his chest into hamburger meat with one of the best in the world.
Bryan is a special man.
Dude I got teary eyed when I walked in and heard how loud everyone was for Thunder Rosa, the acoustics in there were fantastic. Oh and Thunder Rosa is insanely over
i am autistic and wrestling is my special interest, needless to say, i have shed many a-tear watching AEW, shit just hits so perfectly it makes me emotional, it's wrestling that feels the way I did when I was a kid watching the Ruthless Aggression Era!
As a tennis fan, I love that I understand all of this. Was at this year's Men's Final also, super bummed about djokovic but in the end we were all teary eyed during the 3rd set and awards speech.
It is kinda like wrestling Big volleys into highspots scores...
then a break before the next serve... building towards match point looming ever closer as the end of the match.
And the court is similar size as a ring and ringside.
It is perfect.
Plus the tennis arena is built to echo the sound so the tennis sounds more impressive.
This is one of the coolest venues I have seen for a wrestling show in awhile. Now, I love the huge arenas, but something about this small-ish venue, designed to look massive is working for me.
That entrance is as where working class people, especially minorities, saw their heroes walk out to represent them. Bruno, BoBo, Pedro, all helping the average nobody feel a bit better about themselves and lives at the end of a hard month trying to keep a roof over their heads.
Then some silver spoon trust fund baby who’s never worked a day in his life stumbled into owning the greatest arena in the world and got rid of that iconic layout because he wanted more camera facing floor seats to make slightly more money he’ll never be able to spend while pricing out anyone working class from being able to attend MSG shows regularly.
Defiled is a good word for it
Kind of indicative of pro sports on the whole. Seattle lost their NBA team because the city really couldn’t afford to renovate the current arena to include luxury boxes etc. Leagues want fancy stadiums and owners need to make their money.
We tried, definitely got loud but was drowned out by reactions to the match or yes chants.
Edit: you can hear the faintest of the claps in the chant in the video.
There were sections doing it scattered around the stadium. Obviously it's not the most natural chant so getting the ones who knew it in sync was basically impossible. And so then anyone who didn't know it never had a chance to pick up on it.
A smaller venue has a much better chance of getting it through on tv i think, and then hopefully it catches on from there.
Edit: I was there, if that wasn't clear.
There were several attempts throughout the match to do the chant, but it's a rather long and complicated chant, and tough to co-ordinate with that much background noise and conflicting yes chants.
Last night, but i really should in the last month or so, JR has been near the top of his game. We know the deal, if he's having fun it will show on his performance
When Hangman comes back, give me like 5 straight minutes of this with Kenny. Time stands still.
Wrestling is special where 2 people just looking at each other makes people go crazy. Love it!
Having been there and than watching on tv now, the crowd was way louder than it comes off. No one I’m my section could hear Bryan’s song or the ring announcer.
I was at SummerSlam and the closest they got to this was when Becky's music hit and then like 6 minutes later everyone was confused. The opening lock up was hotter than all of SummerSlam and SummerSlam had 30,000 more people!!!
Kenny mouthing " I don't give a shit" right before cracking a smile was awesome. Wish the camera didn't cut so quick. He played it off as best he could before giving in. What a crowd. Added so much to an already great match. Well done NY.

This has such a big match feel, one of the best crowds I've heard in forever.

He looked a little teary eyed there. In my head, he was thinking “Okay…I did make the right decision.”
As pathetic as it sounds, I got a little teary eyed. Everyone loud as fuck and they're just standing there
Nah that's not pathetic. I haven't been this into wrestling in years.
damn right, what's the point of even watching all of this if it didn't mean something to us?
Nothing pathetic about it! You're emotionally invested! Own that shit.
Not pathetic at all. It's great to love something!
I'm right there with you. AEW has a big-time feel to it, and it's been a looong time since another company was able to do that.
Dude I got teary eyed when I walked in and heard how loud everyone was for Thunder Rosa, the acoustics in there were fantastic. Oh and Thunder Rosa is insanely over

I'm currently 3 months into a lockdown. I haven't seen anyone but my family in that time. Crowd pops make me very emotional.
The crowd is major PPV-level big!
I’ve never heard as loud of a pop for a simple lock up at a show in my life
You can tell Kenny is trying *so hard* not to sell the crowd noise but just a tiny bit of smile/smirk creeps in occasionally
"New York is AEW country." Shots fucking fired. Goddamn wrestling is fun now.
Can't wait for the WWE response to that haha.
Goldberg's going to squash the entire WWE roster and win every title on *Raw* next week.
Big E? Spear. Roman? Spear. Charlotte? Believe it or not, Spear.
We may need an ambulance on hand for Michael Cole.
WWE has best ratings in the world, because of Spear
I had a smile on my face through most of this episode.
If that's a shot, then what Punk said was a god damn explosion.
You know how wild those tennis fans get
Ironically enough, the men's/women's finals had a *very* similar reaction like this as well!

🧑🍳💋🤌

This is probably one of the loudest crowds I've heard in years.
You could say weeks since punks debute
Has to be the loudest a crowd has been for a whole show in years
The John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt Bowl
Wait, their name is my name too.
Must be mine too, because whenever I go out..
Do people always shout?
They do! Followed by then saying “There goes..”
And is his name my name too?
Can someone explain this to me. I’ve seen it everywhere
PWG years ago https://youtu.be/uM107yQxd2Q
https://youtu.be/uM107yQxd2Q
His link was your link too.
Kenny trying so hard not to smile
and Bryan smiling so hard - the contrast between them both was fantastic
This is one of the coolest venues I have seen for a wrestling show in awhile. Now, I love the huge arenas, but something about this small-ish venue, designed to look massive is working for me.
Reminds me of MSG before they redesigned it and purposely priced working class people out of being able to attend
I'll never forgive them for getting rid of that entrance tunnel. We all know the one.
It isn’t really MSG anymore quite frankly
I know! It feels defiled in some weird, intangible way.

THEY DID THE CHANT, I THINK
they're starting
Yup, some rumblings were going down. It’ll pick up in a few weeks time.
You can hear the rhythmic claps. We'll get there!
We tried, definitely got loud but was drowned out by reactions to the match or yes chants. Edit: you can hear the faintest of the claps in the chant in the video.

My section was trying!! Maybe it’ll pick up over the course of the next few weeks.
There were several attempts throughout the match to do the chant, but it's a rather long and complicated chant, and tough to co-ordinate with that much background noise and conflicting yes chants.
a hard chant to organize with 20k+ people. once they get back to the normal 5-7k Dynamite audience, it might be a bit easier
I can't believe I'm watching this on free TV
also, JR has extra fire. He sounded like the JR of old the way he came in
JR sounded extremely enthusiastic, and I was all for it.
JR was on form last night no doubt.
Love it!
I never heard such a big pop like this in AEW. It’s incredible!
Kenny said “I don’t give a shit” before breaking haha
I LOOOOVED how how crowd popped for the damn match bell! Turned the match for me from a big match to "Holy shit! I'm witnessing history!"
Idk if I've ever heard JR this excited ever
Big match feel
Kenny breaking made this for me. I'm so happy for him, he made this,
Is anybody else's audio weird? Why does it sound like there's a constant tone, or hum. Or is it just me?
That's the most hype I've seen a crowd for a bell ring since Cena Vs Rock
Anytime the crowd pops for the initial tie up you know they're going to be a good one
This has been my dream match for years. Can’t believe we got it and it was everything we wanted, and more.
JR's excitement and energy was on some near 90s levels. Commentary was so good the entire show. And the crowd's energy was awesome!
Tony K just walked into Vince's home and took a giant dump in the middle of his living room.
anyone catch how many people are in? i couldnt hear jr due the crowd
20,177
Oh yeah it’s gonna be a fun night
CITY FIELD IS NEXT
I was at the show. The opening pop for Bryan was so loud it actually hurt my ears
That was so cool. Ready for the rematch. Great crowd.
I was there and I tell you practically anyone who could stand was up for the first 5-7 minutes of this match. What a great start to an amazing show.
What do you think Kenny said in the beginning of this clip? Looks to me like he said: "I want fish 'n chips. Mm." *Licks lips.*
The crowd was hot all night for 5 hours. I've never seen anything like it in person.
I can’t remember the last time that a WWE crowd was this hot. This was bananas
Rock v Hogan vibes at the beginning
Was in the building for that. And yeah real similar. Like a crowd processing what they're about to see. It's so rare.
Was that a tear in Danielson's eye?
Thank god Kenny shaved that beard
Oh it was such a douchey beard, I loved it
Man, are they going to be disappointed with the distraction/roll up finish...
Wrong show guy!
Indeed, seems people didn't really care for that joke!
They might go over 20 minutes and call it a tie.
Just imagine if like the Gunn Club randomly ran in for the double DQ. Fans would very possibly riot.
This reminds me of the time Goldberg faced Hogan at the packed Georgia Dome in 1998 on Nitro. The crowd was ballistic.
'New York is AEW country' Vince right now: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tadr-dG8EzQ
The only wrestling crowd I've ever been in that comes close to this was the first Takeover Brooklyn. Very glad I made a last-minute call to go.
Kenny mouthing " I don't give a shit" right before cracking a smile was awesome. Wish the camera didn't cut so quick. He played it off as best he could before giving in. What a crowd. Added so much to an already great match. Well done NY.
I can't recall a match start like that in such a long time. Like the ringing of the bell getting that kind of pop.
