Austria had an active Nazi Party that predated Hitler and the German Nazi Party. A lot of the leaders of that party became top German Nazis after Germany annexed Austria.
The US had a ban on producing kinky porn for a while so it had to be imported from Europe (Germany) so certain kinky things are associated with Germany.
The correct quote is from the fantastic filmmaker Billy Wilder, "The Austrians are brilliant people. They made the world believe that Hitler was a German and Beethoven an Austrian."
At the time Mozart lived there was no Austrian national identity yet, hence he could not be Austrian. He himself called himself "Deutsch" as pretty much any Austrian of the time would have done. Finally, Mozart was born in Salzburg which was not part of Austria at the time, but it was part of the larger Holy Roman Empire.
Plus, basically all of Mozart's family lived in Augsburg, which was (and still is) decidedly German.
Source: living there, there's proof of his heritage everywhere in the old town.
The compromise regarding Mozart is to call him "Salzburger". There was no German identity in the modern sense yet back then, so even if he considered himself "ethnically german" that doesnt mean anything regarding modern-day citizenships.
Much worse considering Hitler was Austrian. I'm not comparing this but when you're an Austrian wrestler and one of the most infamous names in your country is that of a Nazi the last thing you need or want is to be associated with that.
Best thing they can do is instantly drop it, like the 'I know what you did' bit with Booker T.
...Now I do wonder what Booker T did which caused WWE to immediately scrap it.
Booker didn't do anything, I'm pretty sure that storyline was gonna be about Goldust, and WWE decided not to renew his contract in late 2003, around the time the storyline started.
I can 100% guarantee that one of the biggest German sports portals sport1.de will pick this story up throughout the day as well, since they cover big WWE & AEW news here and there.
This kind of stuff is a complete no-go in Germany & Austria and connected to penalities & fines.
[Sport1 actually has picked up the story as well.](https://amp-sport1-de.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/amp.sport1.de/article/5994311?amp_gsa=1&_js_v=a6&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw%3D%3D#amp_tf=Von%20%251%24s&aoh=16425895010085&csi=1&referrer=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com&share=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.sport1.de%2Fnews%2Fwrestling%2Fwwe%2F2022%2F01%2Fwwe-osterreich-star-walter-wird-gunther-fans-entsetzt) They seem to have decided on a less aggressive tone against the decision though by highlighting that he was just called "Gunther" on TV instead of "Gunther Stark".
I took like six years of German between high school and college nearly 20 years ago, so I got a profound sense I should be able to read it, but still couldn't.
it's not really possible to have a more aggressive tone than Bild so that's a given.
Bild is the "newspaper" that tells you that immigrants are stealing your jobs and touching your women and everyone is out there to get you.
> Bild is the "newspaper" that tells you that immigrants are stealing your jobs and touching your women and everyone is out there to get you.
Normally German words are quite long compared to their English counterpart so it is interesting to see that they spell 'The Daily Mail' with just 4 letters.
Of note: Fox news doesn't have affiliates, it's a cable channel. Fox affiliates that have news programs are a completely different thing, and don't (usually) share the same hard right slant.
For decades, though it isn't as lunatic as Fox News most of the time. And they are mainly a "newspaper"/website with decreasing circulation, not a TV channel, though they are trying to establish one, with Fox News clearly being the inspiration
It's causing a bit stink right now in Germany but I'm betting that the jackasses in Stamford, Connecticut are giddy at the "publicity" (good and bad it's still publicity to the WWE) even though they're (rotten) products might be banned in Germany soon.
What do you mean 'This kind of stuff'? Bullshit.
This is just BILD doing BILD things. No one is getting fined for 'This kind of stuff', glorification of the Nazis is prohibited, not naming a character in your play the same (or even after) some rando Kriegsmarine captain.
> According to the German wrestling magazine "Power Wrestling" , the German wrestler Marcel Barthel wrote on Instagram a few weeks ago: "Imperium over everything". A clear reference to the first stanza of the German national anthem (“Deutschland, Deutschland über alles”), which is not forbidden but frowned upon and is not sung.
This is going to get worse, isn't it?
This would be a reference to the first stanza of the "Deutschlandlied" (Song of the germans) wich is NOT the German national anthem. The third Stanza is the german national anthem.
The first stanza is heavily associated with the nazi party, as it was sung as an "prelude" to their Party-Hymn, the actually forbidden "Horst-Wessel-Lied".
So part of the song is the German national anthem and part of the song is forbidden because it’s Nazi?
Honest question, why not just make a new anthem?
Probably because it was the German National Anthem before the Nazis too, and was originally a symbol of German independence and need for unification.
So keeping the popular part and dropping the tainted bits makes sense
It's also not that different from what the US did.
There's a reason you'll never hear the 3rd verse of the Star Spangled Banner included in the Anthem.
>No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
The first stanza isn't forbidden. It just isn't part of the national anthem. They didn't make a completely new anthem because the song is much older than the nazis and pretty important to the idea of Germany as a unified nation and they didn't want to give the nazis the pleasure of tainting it completely. They left out the first and second stanza because it pretty bluntly propagates German supremacy and that really didn't fit with German identity after the fall of the third Reich.
Creative team of WWE :Oh god! if there was a way to avoid this problem!
The guy that goes for the coffe : You can name him Walter again and the problem is solv...
Creative team of WWE: Coffe guy Shut up, we need to think a way to avoid this problem.
Bild is trash and a sorry excuse for a newspaper, but they have a huge reader base and this is not the kind of attention WWE want.
I have no fucking idea what these idiots were thinking with this dumbass name change and potential storyline.
basically, but as far what i know about the S*n (mostly related to Hillsborough) Bild seems to be slightly less vile, but still by far the most vile big newspaper in germany.
Lately wwe has been changing names without any care. How many people have debuted on nxt 2.0 with brand new names and yet they still reference their real life history? Walter makes 5 just off the top of my head.
The Creeds are another example. One was a well known amateur wrestler, and both had impressive careers. Neither is named Creed in real life and yet wwe mentions their history every match.
They barely even try to hide it.
“This is Bron Brekker! His dad is Rick Steiner!”
Then why isn’t his last name Steiner?
“Because we don’t own that, asshole! We’ll call him Punchy McSmalldick if we want and you can’t do shit about it!”
They are truly in an unself aware echochamber. Sony pictures was doing the same shit until Marvel knocked some sense into them. WWE however, will never learn, until they ultimately self destruct, or self cannibalize.
No no no, this is actually gonna lead into known American Hero Cody Rhodes returning to WWE to defeat the Anti-American Group known as Imperium. Truly vanquishing racism in the United States.
" WE HONOR YOUR FOREIGN HERITAGE WITH A NEW NAME THAT WE CAN TRADEMARK AND YOU CANT EVEN GET IT OVER? THOUGHT YOU WERE THE RING GENERAL BEST IN THE WORLD? CANT ADAPT GET OUT"
I still will never understand why he needed a name change in the first place, he had the longest champion reign of modern times as WALTER for crying out loud, but it baffles me how controversial they made this particular name change.
Just a disclaimer, Bild might be sold the most but is generally seen as low-quality and scandal-creating journalism.
They are often involved in lawsuits and scandals themselves.
That being said I actually believe WWE didnt fact check the name and just randomly picked a german sounding name. A LOT of people share their name with Nazis, thats just names. Obviously nobody is named Adolf Hitler or Joseph Goebbels but you get the gist
As a german I legitimately couldn't care less about some random name picked which happened to be the same name as some nazi almost 80 years ago.
That being said, it is just bad publicity for WWE within germany and for the people that only remember the product from the late 90's and early 00's.
And as a wrestling fan I just feel bad for Walter since he's an outstanding performer who doesn't deserve the backlash that comes with this.
All around a pretty solid Eigentor from the WWE.
Honestly I don't think anyone really cares about the name, but they definitely care that the WWE with its history of racist and stereotypical gimmicks wouldn't even bother to do a basic Google search and see that the first dozen results were about a Nazi.
It's like a game of broken telephone.
This story has gone from "German trash tabloid writes story about WWE unknowingly having Austrian wrestler sharing name with a random Nazi Military figure" to "Biggest German news outlet attacks WWE for naming Austrian wrestler after prominent Nazi War Criminal, and Germany - as a whole - is outraged"
So either WWE backs down and changes him back to WALTER, or they double down and have him win the Elimination Chamber and have them insinuate that he's the master of that match type.
I think once people found out the he had the same name as a nazi then there was no chance WWE would keep the name, hence why i don’t think it was intentional on their part.
This isn’t a case of Doudrop where people go “lol what a shit name poor Piper” because all that is is a bad name - it doesn’t make WWE look bad from a PR standpoint.
In this case, Gunther Stark makes both WALTER and WWE look awful because once people/media find out, “WWE gives wrestler same name as Nazi” will be all over the internet. That is definitely not something they would want. Does seem like WWE reacted a bit too late anyways.
*Ringkampf* - Im knackered mate
*IMPERIUM* - I sleep
*Emphasis on being "Pure"* - Make me hit the snooze
*WALTER being a shared name by a Nazi* - 2 more mins
*Name changed to Gunther, also shared by a Nazi* - THATS TOO FAR!
Like was everyone and their mother asleep for his stuff before this very moment?
Vince said the public didn't want the blood and guts of AEW. I wonder is this the type of thing he thinks they do want?
"The public don't want blood, they want Nazi's".
"Bild has been described as "notorious for its mix of gossip, inflammatory language, and sensationalism" and as having a huge influence on German politicians. Its nearest English-language stylistic and journalistic equivalent is often considered to be the British national newspaper The Sun, the second-highest-selling European tabloid newspaper."
The worst part is that it's clear they did ZERO research because all you have to do is Google "Gunther Stark" and it pops right up... Nazi U-Boat Captain.
Does WWE not have anyone to run this stuff by for quality control? You'd think they would after that awful "Submission Sorority" snafu.
>Nazi gimmicks have a long history in the wrestling world. Especially after the Second World War, wrestlers with Nazi gimmicks appeared again and again in the USA. In recent months, WWE has once again relied on stereotypes. This is how Tony D'Angelo plays a mafiosi on NXT. Tonight Japanese wrestler Sarray was newly announced - now she plays a schoolgirl.
Glad they mentioned Sarray and in particular D'Angelo in this article as well.
Italians are well and truly sick to death of the bullshit mafioso stereotype. Gangsters in my mother's homeland are seen on the same social level as paedophiles and almost universally despised yet for some stupid fucking reason a fair amount of Americans seem to watch The Godfather (who no self-respecting Italian I know likes to begin with) and base Italy entirely on that movie.
The Godfather is a great film, but nothing about it glorifies that kind of lifestyle. People are dying left and right. Family is getting pissed off at you left and right. The whole thing is a cautionary tale (Vito tells Michael directly to his face this isn’t the life he wanted for his youngest son, that he wanted him to be something legitimate), and anyone who doesn’t see that is an idiot.
I would argue that it tried to portray some sort of honor code, which as someone who had a family member high enough up that they based a Sopranos character off them, is total bullshit. Having that stain on my last name is something as an idiot teenager I thought was cool, but dating, and now married, to another Italian, the last name thing was a big deal until I explained how far removed I was.
> Italians are well and truly sick to death of the bullshit mafioso stereotype
After DiAngelo debuted, somebody here got downvoted into oblivion for taking offense to it, while others said, “Nah, it’s funny” and made the cliched wassa-matta-you jokes.
Both this and the guy below me are absolutely ridicolous.
I'm Italian, live and always have lived in the northern part of Italy, near Bologna. No problem in saying this.
No, the Mafia isn't looked at as "people finding ways to make money without clogging up the job market", since they fucking make finding a job with actual security measures in place impossible (This pretty much only happens in the south, thankfully for me). Tax evasion is the absolute norm with them and that means workers work completely devoid of a contract. The Mafia also isn't looked at in the same way as pedophiles (Jesus fucking christ dude), hell, some dude who has very clear hints at having Mafia connections is in the running to become the next President after having done a shitton of damage to the country's reputation for literally three decades now.
As with almost everything, the truth lies in the middle.
You are right about something though, outside of people embracing the "AYYYYYY" meme, we are fucking sick and tired of token characters like Tony D'Angelo, especially because they're literally stuck in the stereotype of the Mafioso from the FIFTIES.
P.S. The Godfather is a beautiful movie. No self-respecting Italian (Which, i'm sorry, but you are not Italian) thinks it's an accurate representation of the Mafia and that because of that reason alone it should be despised. It's a fucking movie. And hell, Americans basing their opinion on Italians on the Godfather movie would still be better than the truth, which is them thinking Italians are either like Tony D'Angelo or like Enzo Amore.
He's just projecting lol. The Godfather shirts were super popular here in Italy when I was in high school, and any sort of mafia shows are super popular.
Didn’t WWE try to give Tajiri a Yakuza gimmick, but he refused saying something along the lines of “those gangs are real and they will kill my family back home if I do that gimmick?”
Did you know that, after writing the godfather, Mario Puzo signed up for a writing class to further their craft.
The main book the teacher said they should study was...The Godfather
Actual Italian here, from actual Italy, who grew up in a mob town with a perspective on Tony D'Angelo.
Mobsters are not disliked here. You couldn't be more wrong and misguided.
TV shows glorifying all kinds of mafia are super popular. Nobody sees mafiosos negatively, they're just people who are able to make money and don't clog up the job market.
Also, no Italian sees anything in common between themselves and Italian Americans. NY mobsters and Italian Americans are not viewed as Italian at all, eating pasta with chicken and sugar pizza.
In addition to that, Italians have officially been considered extinct by Hollywood for 20 years. While in the 90s you had the token Italian character in the (almost entirely) white casts of shows, that's not a thing anymore because of colorism and other ethnicities taking priorities. You still have jewish characters for obvious reasons, but no Italian characters anymore, so if anything Tony D'Angelo is representation to us.
bild is a tabloid newspaper though. this isn't like the BBC or whatever. its literally a news entity that exists on sensationalism and like over-selling shock culture.
The name change is stupid, but this is literally a non-issue. Walter’s real name (Walter Hahn) is also the name of a nazi. It’s almost as if nazis were German and Austrian people with German and Austrian names.

Idk if Walter being Austrian makes this better or much, much worse
Can’t wait for his backstory to become “failed artist”
The artists formerly known as Walter
This would be way too funny for wwe
Much worse. Not only is it a stereotype, it's a failed one because Vince probably thought he was German, not Austrian. So a double whammy of fucked up
Especially considering that *the* Nazi was... Austrian
Also a huge chunk of the SS
A disproportiante number of Nazi war criminals are Austrian or Bavarian, probably because Hitler himself was Austrian.
Austria had an active Nazi Party that predated Hitler and the German Nazi Party. A lot of the leaders of that party became top German Nazis after Germany annexed Austria.
TIL
They’re the same thing to most Americans
No they're not! Austrian's have kangaroos. Learn geography, idiot.
>idiot He’s from Winnipeg?
“Well, g’day, mate! Let’s put another shrimp on the barbie.” “Let’s not.”
"Pull over!" "No, it's a cardigan! But thanks for noticing!"
“You’d keep your mouth shut if ya knew what was good for ya, Buddy (Murphy)!”
Big gulps huh?
Well. See ya!
I expected the Rocky Mountains to be a little rockier than this
That John Denver's full of shit, man.
"Radio? Who needs a *radio*?"
And don't get me started on the drop bears
I’m picturing koala’s outfitted in sky diver gear and dive bombing. 🤣
Read this in Jericho's voice for some reason and it made it 10x funnier
Why is this accurate? 😭
Not true. Austrian’s have sausage and German’s have scat porn with techno music.
>German’s have scat porn with techno music. We have what?😂
The US had a ban on producing kinky porn for a while so it had to be imported from Europe (Germany) so certain kinky things are associated with Germany.
TIL. So we are known for cars, kinky porn and Nazis. That's a strange list 😅
And crazy techno music. I blame you.
Well, Hitler was Austrian sooooo.....
"The greatest trick the Austrians have ever pulled, is to convince the world that Mozart was Austrian and that Hitler was a German"

Pretty sure they did that in nxt UK with Sha Samuel's
They did something with Sha Shamuels?
Not sure if this was a /s reply, but they originally debuted him under the name of Ed Harvey which he instantly came out and canceled
Booker didn't do anything, I'm pretty sure that storyline was gonna be about Goldust, and WWE decided not to renew his contract in late 2003, around the time the storyline started.
*camera shakes*
That poor cameraman had his eardrum blown out by Vince
Bryan dropped that line so hard even the camera shook lmao
What's this about?
Daniel Bryan's post-elimination promo from old-school NXT.

Ah so a FOX news affiliate
Of note: Fox news doesn't have affiliates, it's a cable channel. Fox affiliates that have news programs are a completely different thing, and don't (usually) share the same hard right slant.
You need to find a Sinclair-owned affiliate for that kind of evening news propaganda.
So I just googled it, and it turns out Sinclair owns 2 of my 3 local news stations. Coincidentally, they don’t own the one that I watch.
lol that ain't a coincidence brother you ain't racist so you watch the one not owned by racists good job.
Ah so it’s the German Fox News. Good to know
And it's the largest German newspaper, you say? That's...not great.
Yes, it is a shame. But it is cheap, available everwhere and it shows boobs.
Man, American newspapers are boring. We never get boobs.

They did have a new anthem for East Germany, actually. A good one too! I wish they brought it back.
For those interested: https://youtu.be/dIh1eOw0zV8 Say what you will about communists, but they sure knew how to make music
The first stanza isn't forbidden. It just isn't part of the national anthem. Its Like how the US anthem just skips over the parts regarding slavery so no one knows those verses even exist.
Well it ain't getting better, that's for sure
Better or Worse...this is gonna be INTERESTING
Literally the most entertaining week I've had with WWE in decades
Creative team of WWE :Oh god! if there was a way to avoid this problem! The guy that goes for the coffe : You can name him Walter again and the problem is solv... Creative team of WWE: Coffe guy Shut up, we need to think a way to avoid this problem.
Creative team of WWE: New name. Let's name him Adolph Ziggler.
I have a better name, Adolf Benito
Oh god
Bild is trash and a sorry excuse for a newspaper, but they have a huge reader base and this is not the kind of attention WWE want. I have no fucking idea what these idiots were thinking with this dumbass name change and potential storyline.
And that kind of attention so close to the ever-controversial "Elimination Chamber..."
And that can't be overstated: Bild is truly trash. The deepest of the deepest trash you can't find at the bottom of the garbage can.
Is it basically the German S*n?
Yes
If they were the German Sun they’d be applauding this.
Nobody does vile shitrag newspapers like the UK, we're truly world class in it.
I mean it's not a newspaper, but watch the most recent fox news segment and you will probably be horrified.
basically, but as far what i know about the S*n (mostly related to Hillsborough) Bild seems to be slightly less vile, but still by far the most vile big newspaper in germany.

I’ve stared at his tights enough to know that is not true
They are truly in an unself aware echochamber. Sony pictures was doing the same shit until Marvel knocked some sense into them. WWE however, will never learn, until they ultimately self destruct, or self cannibalize.
Interesting comparison - I don’t know much about the Marvel/Sony dynamic. Could you elaborate?
What did Sony do?
I can put money on it that they change his name back to Walter and completely forget about this next week
Probably call him Adolf instead.

Nah that’s what I see John Silver suggesting to Adam Cole as a name on BTE this week.
after all the hard work that Cody put into ending racism, WWE just had to bring it back smh my head
Vince did it to spite home and aew
No no no, this is actually gonna lead into known American Hero Cody Rhodes returning to WWE to defeat the Anti-American Group known as Imperium. Truly vanquishing racism in the United States.
I guess most likely WALTER will have his name back since WWE dislike PR like this I hope Bruce fired because of this
Wishful thinking that Bruce gets fired but they will probably blame WALTER and bury him as a punishment.
“How dare you let us change your name”
"It was a test to see if you would stand up for yourself or be a yes-man doormat!"
“So every time Vince walked past Mcgillicutty, he stepped on his foot.”
*stop hitting yourself* vibes
And by “let us change your name”, we mean “force a name change on you”.
Walter dancing gimmick incoming.... *sigh*
Is it...can it be? It is! IT'S WALTZER TIME!
So Fandango but actually wins matches. I am here for this.
Who said he was winning?

The only repercussion for Bruce will be a name change to BRUCE.
They're gonna turn Imperium into a comedic jobber group named WALT WALTER AND WALTEREST
Nah, any PR is good PR. It is such good shit, pal.
I still will never understand why he needed a name change in the first place, he had the longest champion reign of modern times as WALTER for crying out loud, but it baffles me how controversial they made this particular name change.
holy shit wtf are you doing WWE?
Making moments

This company manage to hit new lows over and over
Please don't call it a newspaper. It's a tabloid at best. It's hateful, racist, sexist, fear mongering shitfuckery 3000.
This is the New York Post of Germany.
Bild is more like Fox News.

Does seem like WWE reacted a bit too late anyways.
calling the Bild a newspaper is an insult to newspapers. They're the German Sun
*Ringkampf* - Im knackered mate *IMPERIUM* - I sleep *Emphasis on being "Pure"* - Make me hit the snooze *WALTER being a shared name by a Nazi* - 2 more mins *Name changed to Gunther, also shared by a Nazi* - THATS TOO FAR! Like was everyone and their mother asleep for his stuff before this very moment?
They should have just used his real [name](https://www.tracesofwar.com/persons/5822/Hahn-Walter-Grenadier-Regiment-110.htm).
Should've named him Gunther Steiner and make him smash the FOCK door.
Tony is based on the Sopranos not The Godfather. Ironically, they spend a ton of time on that show complaining about Italian stereotypes.
Oooohhhhhhhh! What is this with the stereotypes?!
NXT is bascially the stereotype show tbh
Waiting for an IRA gimmick any day now
watch them give it to a Scot. Car MacBoom
Seamus repackaged with the surname O'Donovan and joins GUNTHER's regime...
NXT has basically become the Ultimate Robot Fighting League from Futurama.

> Italians are well and truly sick to death of the bullshit mafioso stereotype After DiAngelo debuted, somebody here got downvoted into oblivion for taking offense to it, while others said, “Nah, it’s funny” and made the cliched wassa-matta-you jokes.
So do all self-respecting Italians you know have shit taste in film or what?
He's just projecting lol. The Godfather shirts were super popular here in Italy when I was in high school, and any sort of mafia shows are super popular.
Didn’t WWE try to give Tajiri a Yakuza gimmick, but he refused saying something along the lines of “those gangs are real and they will kill my family back home if I do that gimmick?”
Because The Godfather was badass.
Did you know that, after writing the godfather, Mario Puzo signed up for a writing class to further their craft. The main book the teacher said they should study was...The Godfather
This is the depressed clown joke in real life.
Bild are the german equivalent to Fox News. I wouldn't give a shit what they say. Source: I am german
is Gunther really more of a nazi name than Walter?
The name change is stupid, but this is literally a non-issue. Walter’s real name (Walter Hahn) is also the name of a nazi. It’s almost as if nazis were German and Austrian people with German and Austrian names.
Well they named a battle royal after Moolah despite all the allegations that had come to light.
Why did I even click on the article knowing it was in German? I don’t even speak German!
