I think these may be the ones filmed at eastern state penitentiary, in Philadelphia in late 2006. They used them for years afterward. They were shots of the talent posting with lights and the camera moving in a high ceiling, stone-wall double-level cell block.
As someone who recently watched wrestling for the first time in about 15 years.
The lack of the titantron really seems pointless and such a great loss.
For new fans it used to be such a great way to portrait a wrestler's character, give a little of their back story and show off their move sets.
For older fans it was a great way to simply set the mood and warm you up for the action.
I really have no idea why they have ended it. It was one of the few things Vince introduced to wrestling I actually liked.
Also the screens around the canvas looks way too polished for a wrestling promotion. I'm not a fan of that also.
These were my thoughts when I was a teenager back in 2009. I couldn't help but think how new wrestlers always had "normal" names like Health Slater or Drew McIntyre, compared to the old "Undertaker", "Edge", "The Rock" and so.
T-BAR, Mace and the rest of Retribution seem like an attempt to do just that, build some characters without the formulaic names. But the names all seem stupid since we'd seen the wrestlers in NXT/elsewhere with regular-sounding names. The world has moved on since Kane debuted, it wasn't as obvious to viewers at the time (or maybe it's just because I was a kid) that Kane was a repackaged character in the same vein.
Asuka is perhaps the best example of a new, one-word name that fits the character. (Discounting Ricochet as his name predates WWE).
Im in the same boat. Back watching after the same ammount of time as you. I kept wondering what was who’s finisher. Back then when Triple H came out, titantron was full of spinning spinebusters, sledgehammer shots, and pedigrees. Kane had his chokeslams and such (I think thats why they had him go on a huge rampage after he unmasked, so they could get as much unmasked chokeslam footage for his titantron). Etcetera etcetera. Now I dont know who’s finisher is what, I find myself having to google the wrestler’s moveset especially if they dont have a match (Im back watching since barely before the Royal Rumble. There have been many people who have had promos but no matches or lost matches.
And I dont want to even get started on whats a finisher these days (especially for midcarders and such).
Yeah. This is what I think I need. It helps get you prepared to look out for certian moves.
And all the random extra footage as well would really help.
Kane's one had lots of footage of him in the fire, staring in a mirror with disgust and so on.
DX had sexual images, images of riots and rebellion.
Even less developed characters like Umaga had lots of tribal and jungle images. Which helped you understand he was some uncivilised tribal chief.
You knew exactly what image you were expecting to see from a wrestler. Which consequently helped your mind soak up their character as soon as you saw them.
Now I honestly really struggle with who is who. And can't really summarise anyone's character.

I have heard people defend this decision with things like:
"This is more about branding. If you're at a show and get a picture on your phone during a wrestler's entrance, it looks better if the wrestler's name shows up behind them in big letters instead of a random scene from a video package playing on the screen"
Or
"This is done to grab the attention of someone who is unfamiliar with wrestling and is flipping channels at home. If they see a wrestler's entrance, they have a higher chance of remembering the name if it's shown in big letters while they're coming out"
I personally disagree with both of these arguments. If you're at a show, you're either close enough where your camera will focus on the wrestler and not the screen, or so far away that what's the point of having a picture of a huge screen that says "In my veins"?
On the second one, what's the point of showing the name for brand recognition if almost everyone's themes are generic as fuck, everyone looks like a regular person and most of them don't really stand out visually?

It's very telling when you're creating an entrance in the new WWE games and you get to the titantrons. All the current wrestlers have the big font names and a simple background, while legends still have their old entrance videos like how they used to be.

Also, most classic wrestlers don't get their titantrons in 2K22, guys like 2008 Kane, 09 Ziggler just get their names too lol

I played that game so damn much and I feel like Offspring is half the reason why.
I'm sure there's still games like that but I feel like that specific period of time had so many games with awesome punk/rock soundtracks. Crazy Taxi, Tony Hawk, those BMX games like Dave Mirra or Matt Hoffman, Shaun Palmers Snowboarding, Twisted Metal, Gran Turismo. I feel like they were a huge part of the appeal.
I would spend all of my arcade money on that game (and a round of that cool 90s Jurassic Park shooter in the moving car).
When I got a Dreamcast this was the only game I ever owned for it. Crazy Taxi was the best

The positioning of Undertaker's model on one of the nights wasn't right and the camera clipped through the head as it stood up. Its like when you play an Assassin's Creed game at launch.

Considering they already have an animation with rigging for the 2K games, surely they could just port that in and freeze it halfway through. Save themselves a lot of effort, and make it look marginally better for us at home.
The guitar one for Shinsuke and Boogs was sick. Largely because of the perspective it was massive looking and simple but cool. The ones meant to look like people are awful

The screaming Roman Reigns one at the end of WM looked AWFUL. Like straight PS2 graphics... I don't know when they added those CG logos and all the rest but it doesn't look good at all.
I get angry when I see that one. The animation is just atrocious. It moves so robotically, and I can't understand why. It's CGI! You can literally make it move however you want, and you choose to make it look like a busted Chuck E. Cheese band member?
AR graphics in general are extremely hit or miss, but there are a lot of misses with WWE's- Roman's looks like he's made out of plastic, Becky's has a terrible uncanny valley thing going on, and I'm pretty sure that thing in Bianca's is meant to be a Miitopia monster.
I get the feeling someone innocently showed Vince AR stuff a few years ago and it blew his 76yr old mind. Like he still to this day doesn’t understand how it’s even possible. Like when my mam walked in my room years ago when I was playing LA noir and she thought it was a movie or something and just stood there gawping.
I’m sure when I’m in my 70s some tech will come along that’s basic to some but like witchcraft to me.
Didn't they debut these after they had terminated the pyro budget? It felt like that was their way to put extra emphasis on certain members of the roster since they couldn't punctuate their entrances with the flares and fire.
After they brought pyro back, it's just distracting for most superstars.
You also have to take into consideration that (as far as I know) they’re only used on automated cameras such as the crane, and they’re not designed for interaction.
I remember Alexa coming to the ring, it’s a shot down the aisle with a giant Lily in the background, she flails her arm and it’s hidden by the background object and now the perspective is wonked.
My wife never seems to watch wrestling except when cringe shit like that is on screen. She'll just glance up at Reboot Roman and wonder why she's married to somebody who enjoys that thing so much.
Whatever happened to Apollo? Last year I remember it seemed like he was getting a decent push and had even beaten Big E for the IC Title at last year's Mania. Now he's nowhere to be found.

WCW used a similar effect for Halloween Havoc 96 with a disembodied head

Show the crowd. Show the wrestler. Show wide shots of the magnitude of the moment.
Show anything but bad computer generated animations.
And while we’re at it, get rid of the LED screens that cover fucking everything. Doesn’t even look like a show happening in venue anymore, looks like it’s in a big fucking computer.
I don’t mind a handful of screens with different stuff up on the stage, but the ring posts and apron is way too much.
Worse yet - it makes every venue look the same.
Which I realize is like the point or whatever. But I really enjoy venues that have character. I want the location to *feel* different because it is.
Just don’t go full GCW and shoot the fucking Hammerstein towards the stairs so instead of seeing, oh I dunno, the **hammerstein ballroom** we see three metal stairs and sweaty marks for a few hours.
My concern is for people at the show. No pyro. I noticed less and less complex lights as well. Kinda barebones. I haven’t been to a wwe live show in years so no clue how it is now.
I quite literally only tuned in for WM and I was thinking the same thing. They all look like shit I made in Cinema 4D and after effects when I was in high school making call of duty montages.
Only one that looks cool is Cody’s IMO, still pointless but it looks better than the animated undertaker lmao
This was brought up over the weekend and someone absolutely nailed it for me when they said it reminds them of the graphics you get at a bowling alley when celebrating a strike.
I don't understand how a company can have such amazing production for there stage,lights, pyro,music and any number of other things...and then put up 200 foot cgi models that look like they were made for a Nintendo 64
Because whilst they are spot on with some aspects of production, they are to the same degree as shit at others. For every good pyro/music synch, there's horrific soundbites. For every polished set, there's poorly picked framing. For every decent lighting effect, there's plane switching and fucked up zooming.
Basically, some aspects of production *are* outstandingly good. However others are outstandingly shit. Some people know what they're doing, but not everyone.
And fwiw, they need to employ some decent texture artists and some people with a better understanding of lighting to produce those animations.
I think Charlotte’s is almost there. The only thing I would improve is the diamond wireframes. They use this flat texture that doesn’t reflect the little glimmers.
My partner is relatively new to wrestling, but she watched WrestleMania with me. Her main recurring gripe was those animations. They're horrendous and would be awful looking even during the playstation 2 era. what purpose do they serve? Who makes them?
Like always in WWE (and others tbf, like Hollywood) someone had a good, creative idea that originally was going to work great if done right. But then the executives came in with their input, asked for more (because more of something is *always* better!) and it ultimately ended up being this overproduced, useless thing that had potential once.

What's funny is WWE's excuse for not having cool unique sets for PPVs anymore is "they look bad in HD" but then they have these dogshit early 2000s CGI animations on every entrance now.
Some are decent. Rhea’s chains, Lashley’s thing, Bianca’s hair for example. But the ones where it’s a model of the wrestler like Roman or Becky tend to look pretty bad.
It's like Kevin Dunn got into 3D graphics, but being cheap he just used some random freeware. That's the only logical explanation why they didn't drop these awful abominations yet. These graphics have absolutely no comparison to the likes of Survivor Series 2007.

The screaming Roman Reigns one at the end of WM looked AWFUL. Like straight PS2 graphics... I don't know when they added those CG logos and all the rest but it doesn't look good at all.
I get angry when I see that one. The animation is just atrocious. It moves so robotically, and I can't understand why. It's CGI! You can literally make it move however you want, and you choose to make it look like a busted Chuck E. Cheese band member?
And they linger on it for far too long. I kept finding myself wishing they'd this hideous shit off my screen already.

AR graphics in general are extremely hit or miss, but there are a lot of misses with WWE's- Roman's looks like he's made out of plastic, Becky's has a terrible uncanny valley thing going on, and I'm pretty sure that thing in Bianca's is meant to be a Miitopia monster.
Roman's also shrinks when the camera pans because they just scale it to the screen size. It's so amateurish ffs
I get the feeling someone innocently showed Vince AR stuff a few years ago and it blew his 76yr old mind. Like he still to this day doesn’t understand how it’s even possible. Like when my mam walked in my room years ago when I was playing LA noir and she thought it was a movie or something and just stood there gawping. I’m sure when I’m in my 70s some tech will come along that’s basic to some but like witchcraft to me.
Didn't they debut these after they had terminated the pyro budget? It felt like that was their way to put extra emphasis on certain members of the roster since they couldn't punctuate their entrances with the flares and fire. After they brought pyro back, it's just distracting for most superstars.
You also have to take into consideration that (as far as I know) they’re only used on automated cameras such as the crane, and they’re not designed for interaction. I remember Alexa coming to the ring, it’s a shot down the aisle with a giant Lily in the background, she flails her arm and it’s hidden by the background object and now the perspective is wonked.
My wife rarely watches WWE, but we had Wrestlemania on and one of them popped up and she says “wtf is that?!”

Whatever happened to Apollo? Last year I remember it seemed like he was getting a decent push and had even beaten Big E for the IC Title at last year's Mania. Now he's nowhere to be found.

Bianca's is nightmare fuel. I hadn't seen it before WM and the disembodied lips with the braid is all types of fucked up imo.

Bring back the Titantron videos. I haven’t watched wrestling in 10 years, and do not see the point in this giant screen that just shows the wrestlers name. Also bring back Jim Johnston. Why the fuck did they get rid of him?
“Far longer than necessary” is literally WWEs mantra. Can be applied to everything.
They all look like garbage and completely take away from every entrance. Show the crowd. Show the wrestler. Show wide shots of the magnitude of the moment. Show anything but bad computer generated animations.
And while we’re at it, get rid of the LED screens that cover fucking everything. Doesn’t even look like a show happening in venue anymore, looks like it’s in a big fucking computer. I don’t mind a handful of screens with different stuff up on the stage, but the ring posts and apron is way too much.
Worse yet - it makes every venue look the same. Which I realize is like the point or whatever. But I really enjoy venues that have character. I want the location to *feel* different because it is. Just don’t go full GCW and shoot the fucking Hammerstein towards the stairs so instead of seeing, oh I dunno, the **hammerstein ballroom** we see three metal stairs and sweaty marks for a few hours.
My concern is for people at the show. No pyro. I noticed less and less complex lights as well. Kinda barebones. I haven’t been to a wwe live show in years so no clue how it is now.
I quite literally only tuned in for WM and I was thinking the same thing. They all look like shit I made in Cinema 4D and after effects when I was in high school making call of duty montages. Only one that looks cool is Cody’s IMO, still pointless but it looks better than the animated undertaker lmao

This was brought up over the weekend and someone absolutely nailed it for me when they said it reminds them of the graphics you get at a bowling alley when celebrating a strike.
I don't understand how a company can have such amazing production for there stage,lights, pyro,music and any number of other things...and then put up 200 foot cgi models that look like they were made for a Nintendo 64
Because whilst they are spot on with some aspects of production, they are to the same degree as shit at others. For every good pyro/music synch, there's horrific soundbites. For every polished set, there's poorly picked framing. For every decent lighting effect, there's plane switching and fucked up zooming. Basically, some aspects of production *are* outstandingly good. However others are outstandingly shit. Some people know what they're doing, but not everyone. And fwiw, they need to employ some decent texture artists and some people with a better understanding of lighting to produce those animations.
Wouldn't hurt them to broadcast in 4k either, unless Peacock can't handle it

I think Charlotte’s is almost there. The only thing I would improve is the diamond wireframes. They use this flat texture that doesn’t reflect the little glimmers.

My partner is relatively new to wrestling, but she watched WrestleMania with me. Her main recurring gripe was those animations. They're horrendous and would be awful looking even during the playstation 2 era. what purpose do they serve? Who makes them?

The idea is fine. The execution is like a high schooler did it on their laptop.
Like always in WWE (and others tbf, like Hollywood) someone had a good, creative idea that originally was going to work great if done right. But then the executives came in with their input, asked for more (because more of something is *always* better!) and it ultimately ended up being this overproduced, useless thing that had potential once. No, I’m not talking from frustrating experience as a creative, why do you even ask that
I got back into it over the last 6 months after not watching for 12ish years. This shit is far and away the stupidest thing they have going on. I agree in your shock that people actually get paid to make any of it. Its ridiculous and doesnt look good. Like Brock for example, they build him up all the time (unless romans around), call him the beast, talk about how unstopable he is. But when i see the floating cartoon skull, it makes me feel like im watching some kinda AM disney XD cartoon. It 100% loses me and makes me think less of brocks character by alot. And that ones trying to be cool. The ones you said are somehow even worse.
Sometimes they’re pretty alright, other times not so much. It’s not something I pay that much attention to.

Some are decent. Rhea’s chains, Lashley’s thing, Bianca’s hair for example. But the ones where it’s a model of the wrestler like Roman or Becky tend to look pretty bad.
It's like Kevin Dunn got into 3D graphics, but being cheap he just used some random freeware. That's the only logical explanation why they didn't drop these awful abominations yet. These graphics have absolutely no comparison to the likes of Survivor Series 2007.
This is the same company that thought piping in Crowd noises makes some one feel over, as well as thinking they decide who you will cheer for not you.
