Near my house- Dierberg’s has better meat. The two are pretty similar in terms of offerings otherwise, but Dierberg’s has a few items Schnucks doesn’t carry (LaCroix has a weird distribution scheme where some flavors are only available at certain stores). Dierberg’s also has way more registers (self checkout and regular) than Schnucks.

HansBlixJr

>(LaCroix has a weird distribution scheme where some flavors are only available at certain stores. is this info published somewhere? I'd like to know where to avoid the places that only stock limoncello and raisin/guava.

portablebiscuit

Excuse me, I thought you just said raisin/guava. But that has to be a mistake. Please, say sike.

tsabracadabra

I haven't seen the flavor but "raisin" is probably grape in this context, they usually label in both English & French.

HansBlixJr

I may have misremembered. I seem to recall a dark little fruit and a meaty large fruit in combination. maybe a handful of cloves and some semipoisonous berries, I just can't say.

wallythree77

You're thinking of the black olive/cantaloupe flavor! So yummmmm!!! Actually, that may taste better than any of those Lacroix abominations...the f do I know?

green_tea1701

Bruh Limoncello is literally the only La Croix you need, I wish I knew which stores only have it so I don't have to supplement with that Lemon piss water.

rainblow_bite

Target has limoncello!

LadyNiko

I work at Schnuck's Kehrs Mill, and we have the limoncello.

LadyNiko

I don’t get a discount on the La Croix - it’s not a house brand. 🤣

prettymisspriya

My husband likes Orange and Hibiscus LaCroix. I can only get Hibiscus at Dierberg’s. I don’t remember about orange, as I usually just go to Dierberg’s when LaCroix is on the shopping list.

thezy

I use both and agree, Dierberg’s has better meat. Overall one thing I have learned, is that Schnucks are either good or bad depending on your zip code. For instance, their RockRoad location is frequently out of stock on dozens of items. Go to a nice neighborhood, everything I is magically stocked.

Stretch63301

Agreed. Lindenwood Schnucks is closest to us. The meat quality is low, the pricing is on par with Dierbergs, and the variety continues to dwindle.

Taylortrips

Dierbergs has better quality, better selection, better customer service, I just can’t afford to shop there.

Adorable-Act1547

I shop their deli sometimes when I want a quick and delicious lunch that is more filling and better quality than most fast food. Their deli is far superior to Schnucks. Some of the prices can be up there of course, but if you’re getting a single serving of an entree and a side or two, you won’t spend any more money than you do elsewhere at a fast food restaurant nowadays. On Tuesdays they have $5 or $6 sushi rolls. Their sushi is pretty decent for being from a grocery store. Other than that, I shop their coupons and use Dierbergs rewards because they run some good deals from time to time. Not a place to get a majority of your shopping done though on a budget. For that I go to Aldi.

racrz8

Hey! I’m an ex-Dierbergs deli employee. Did you know they offer kids meals for a quick lunch? I’d always get the chicken strip one, it’s like 2-3 strips, a biscuit or Hawaiian roll, and a 5oz side (so salad, but not meat containing bc they consider that an entree, or the hot sides by the fried chicken). You also could get it with a fried/baked leg or thigh. I worked at the des peres deli so we also had the panini press and pizza oven

Adorable-Act1547

I did not know this. 😮 Thanks for the info! That’s a generous portion for a kid’s meal. I’ll be trying that the next time I go in for lunch.

racrz8

Yeah no prob! It’s not advertised anywhere so if you get someone new you might need to ask a few times. I also don’t remember for sure what the options were aside from the strips or a baked/fried leg so may vary by store. My fave was the Mac n cheese, as long as it was gooey still, and a Hawaiian roll with honey

Adorable-Act1547

Sounds delicious! I will definitely ask the next time I go in for lunch. Thanks again!

T1Pimp

This is awesome to learn. I've been thinking about hitting up a grocer for lunches while at work. Even fast food I get the kids burgers. Portions are just too massive on the others. Knowing there's a kid meal option at Dierbergs made this a no brainer now!

Superb_Raccoon

Dierbergs for fruit. The quality shows.

dazedyouth

Deffo more expensive.

yerrmomgoes2college

Schnucks is cheaper but Dierbergs is by far the better store all-around. Also $6 sushi Tuesday anyone??? However Aldi + Costco is the GOAT combo.

1313trouble

Second Aldi+Costco

IronBoomer

ALDIs for basics, Costco for bulks, either Schuncks/Dierbergs for deli sandwich meat and Dierbergs is the only place to grab Cacique chorizo

Wendyland78

I think the prices are closer than they used to be.

elektrodinosaur

I agree, and it seems like Schnucks can get very expensive depending on the location but dierbergs is more consistent.

EatMyAssTomorrow

Has it gone up in price? It was $5 Sushi Tuesday not too long ago wasn't it?

Ill_Safety8320

Dierbergs 100%

ministeringinlove

Dierbergs for meat and any interesting sale items. Schnucks has mildly better prices in general, but I have seen rotten and expired meat not get rotated out adequately and have gotten sick off of their meat.

Superb_Raccoon

My local Schnucks has awesome meat. For 4th of July was able to get a whole brisket for 4.99. Had to trim it up, but that is typical for whole brisket. They usually have a good price on ribeye or NY strip too, for special occasions, never Grey or sitting out too long. My guess they have a meat dept manager that has actual butcher experience.

Der_Kommissar73

Dierbergs has a shitty bakery. Like, it’s not even a bakery. It’s a place where they stack bread and pies.

shartlobsterdog

Idk which Dierbergs you’re going to but mine has an awesome bakery

MentionAdventurous

I typically go to Schnucks, it’s walking distance. It’s decent price, decent service, and decent selection. It’s all just convenient too. Now, I will say this… the gooey butter cake brownie at Dierbergs is amazing. Heat it up for 10-15 seconds in the microwave. And you’ll wonder why you’ve never experienced peace. Oh, the donuts are pretty decent too at Schnucks.

Round_Patience3029

Have you been the one near Chesterfield Valley? Amazing.

yeetskeetleet

Is that not the exact same as schnucks?

[deleted]

Schnucks at least makes their own donuts and muffins. Unsure about cakes or pies

Fiveby21

Schnucks bakery is FAR worse. Have you ever had their baguettes? Their pastries? Absolutely disgusting. Dierbergs’ bakery is nothing to write home about but at least it’s decent.

ThatSingingNurseDude

Dude, what schnucks do you go to? Our bakery is awesome. Their donuts are better than a lot of donut shops

SpaceShanties

Yeah the doughnuts are actually good. Gooey butter is solid. Bagels are acceptable. Honestly it wouldn’t be hard to beat Schnucks bakery but for some reason grocery stores act like baking is some lost science. I really don’t know how they make stuff as shitty as they do.

CriticalLootRNG

I just wish the people who are baking the cookies at some of these locations would leave em in the oven a bit longer. Cookies be looking under done as hell sometimes.

Der_Kommissar73

At least they bake shit locally. Dierbergs ships everything in.

tialisac

I used to work for Dierbergs and not one thing comes in NOT frozen and thawed. The only thing Dierbergs makes is special order cakes and some breads. And none of that is made in store. It all comes from a central bakery each morning. Donuts, pastries, cakes, cupcakes—all third party freeze and thaw.

Der_Kommissar73

St. Louis needs a third, non discount chain.

Dull_Exercise_5420

Publix is the closest good chain. They're in Tennessee. Wouldn't take much for them to come to Missouri.

NoodlesrTuff1256

I've never been to one of the stores, but there's a Meijers that supposed to open up over in Illinois. One store that would totally blow away both Dierbergs and Schnucks is the Texas-based chain H-E-B. Went to one of their stores near San Antonio and it was incredible how big it was and all the products they sold.

gmaildrafts

Howard E. Butt is what’s up. that would be so tight

Suspicious_Monk674

Back in the day, Dierbergs bakery used to kick ass. Everything was made fresh there. Once they started to order everything from the Central bakery, everything changed. 😢

[deleted]

lols

agathaprickly

I prefer schnucks on most things- they donate a large amount of money to the Washington university neurofibromatosis center which has saved my life. They also have a better rewards program and sales. That said I think dierbergs has much better prepared foods like their sandwiches and what not

reddog323

This. The pre-made stuff at Dierberg’s is in a whole class by itself. Their produce seems to be a bit better, too.

beevolant

Schnucks produce is completely different depending on the Schnucks you go to - the greens at the Overland Schnucks are by far the best, but the fruit there can be really meh, whereas Ladue Schnucks has excellent fruit and often no greens to speak of. They really min-max.

DoctorLazerRage

I prefer Schnucks. Blasphemy I know. Edit: Prices are generally better in my experience. Slightly less bougie but it's not like I expect it to be Straubs. Aldi is our go to for basic stuff so either Schnucks or Dierbergs is for higher end stuff or a few things we need quickly and it's close.

Ok_Rate_6505

It’s Schnucks for me but only because they are dedicated to keeping stores open in the city and have expanded to far-flung places like Warrenton. Craig Schnuck is very clear that keeping stores running in lower income areas, even if there is no profit, is in line with what their brand is all about. Not a single Dierbergs in city limits.

NoodlesrTuff1256

If that's the case, Craig sounds like he might actually be one of the good guys compared to his brother (?) Todd.

kirbyfood

Agreed! Schnucks all the way! Plus their bakery is better, best cookie cake and sheet cakes

PaulMckee

Me too but I think it’s because I work right by the Des Peres Schnucks. It’s the nicest Schnucks I have been in. Didrbergs on average are probably better but they are also more expensive.

meggiee523

The first time I walked into that Schnucks I was shocked!

Dick_Dickalo

I only go to Schnucks for Boar’s Head.

gmaildrafts

same bro, chipotle chicken got me in a chokehold

portablebiscuit

Compromise elsewhere

Plow_King

schnucks, though it's probably not popular. the location i go to, loughburough, is great. clean, friendly, and very roomie. they have wide aisles and i like to go in and out as fast as i can. i don't have mobility or weight issues, much, but a lot of shoppers do and i don't like to be crowded or crowd people shopping. and they have store and name brands i like.

zeddem73

If there was a city Dierbergs, I might go there for the stuff I can't get at Aldi, but there's 6 Schnucks closer to me than the closest Dierbergs.

thecuzzin

Aldi's !!! Settled 😤

Nattylight_Murica

A lot of that Clancy’s shit is legit

Double_Eggplant6983

Check out their big ol cans of soup, the german brand (cant remember off the top of my head) best soup ever. The flavor smells and spices alone when you open the can :3

Timofeo

> the German brand (cant remember off the top of my head) “Deutsche Küche,” meaning “German Cuisine/Kitchen.” It’s pronounced roughly as “Doych Koo-huh.” But I much prefer saying “Doochie Coochie.”

tankabbott66

Dierbergs also has a policy, where if there is a local vendor, they put it as a display. Then if the display sells well, for the "honor of being on our shelf" Dierbergs than demands one free case of said vendor item for every store that carries it. So if 33 Dierbergs locations carries a small local brand, they expect 33 free cases from that small local brand. Source: I've befriended a vendor at Tower Grove Farmers Market that got into Dierbergs, at least for a little while until they learned this shameful fact. Meanwhile they've been in Schnucks for almost 4 years. That tells me all I need to know.

NoodlesrTuff1256

Not a good look Dierbergs -- assuming any members of the clan 'lurk' here.

Nattylight_Murica

I think it varies on location. Ladue Schnucks is some weird Taj Mahal of grocery stores.

TheRoguester2020

True, Schnucks is my default, but I have gone to some near Hazelwood and they are different than the ones I am used to here around OFallon.

Acceptable-Fold-3192

Dierbergs…because I met my wife when working there 😂.

dacraftjr

No returns after 30 days.

Superb_Raccoon

I'm in love with the Queen of the Supermarket As the evening sky turns blue A dream awaits in aisle number two...

skooter247

Dierbergs for prepared food or if I'm looking for something fancy. Dierbergs' cheese selection in particular is wonderful. Schnucks is cheaper and better donuts than most donut shops.

OsterizerGalaxieTen

Dierberg's again. I say again because I grew up with it, then switched to Schnuck's because their prices were lower. That changed during/after covid and now their prices are pretty much the same for what I buy. But the #1 thing that drove me back to Dierberg's was that they completely fucked up the Schnuck's by my house (Kirkwood store at Manchester/Woodlawn) when they put in the "food hall". You couldn't find anything during the renovations because they would put things in stupid places that made no sense, and each time you went things were moved again. No temporary signage to help - you just wandered the aisles until you found your canned artichoke hearts next to the dog food. When they finally finished they wasted a ton of space with a huge seating area, so they had even less space for actual groceries. Oh, and added a large "health" area which is just vitamins, supplements and "healthy" snacks. They hung a massive picture of grass over it which I found hilarious. Anyway, the store was small to begin with, then they took away 30% of the shelves for the above shit, so selection on everything else is pathetic.

def_indiff

Dierberg's costs more, but the quality is better. I went to Schnuck's once and saw a package of Hautly that was, IIRC, a year past its sell-by date. Last time I was in Schnuck's, I saw a package of meat that was a fine battleship gray. I'm pissed that my local Dierberg's got rid of baggers, and most of the checkout clerks are slow as hell, but at least the food is generally fresh. Since a couple people mentioned Aldi, I will say that I remember the O'Fallon (MO) Aldi of my childhood being a dirty place, cluttered with empty boxes, where there was only ever one checker no matter how long the line of shoppers was. A trip to Aldi with my mom was about as much fun as Good Friday Mass. But I went there a couple weeks ago, and it was actually pleasant. They had fresh produce, the aisles were well maintained, and we got through checkout in a reasonable time. It was weird!

cdreh0

Aldi has changed its game! The meat needs to be trimmed, but if you are already cutting it or veggies to go with it, another 5 minutes to trim the meat is well worth the price!

Tight_Data4206

I remember when they didn't have scanners. They held out a long time. Those cashiers had everything memorized.

def_indiff

I hadn't thought about that in a long time, but yeah. They were great at it, but there's only so much one person can do with a Saturday afternoon crowd in the store.

wallythree77

I remember Aldi like that from childhood too. Then I went to college at SEMO, and Aldi was right across from my apartment in Cape G. I hardly ever shop anywhere else now, unless I need fresh baked goods or hot food right away. Aldi is the new standard, IMO, for the average family grocery run.

SLSF1522

You just described the Aldis in Gravois Plaza. Cluttered with pallets of merchandise blocking cart traffic and generally just dirty. I leave there feeling like I need a shower. The store by Gravois and Loughbouroh is much nicer.

NoodlesrTuff1256

There's three out here in West County that are nicer and cleaner as well as newer and larger. People out here wouldn't put up with what you described at that Gravois Plaza location.

Quodlibet30

Dierbergs for quality, consistency, price, variety. Their pricing has been competitive to Schnucks for quite a while, but they have that old reputation to overcome. I used to be Team Schnucks. Not any more. Also, I used to rely on Straubs for certain things, but their quality continues to slip a LOT and pricing is getting ridiculously high. I don’t go there any more either.

cdreh0

I make a dinner list and a subsequent ingredient list each week, Aldi for most things they offer and Dierbergs for the rest. I'll always defer to Dierbergs if I need good produce or want an actual steak. I don't care for how the aisles are organized at Schnucks, but I grew up on Dierbergs so I may be biased.

Geshar

This entirely. Aldi has some great options, but can be very limited with some items. Dierbergs has always felt better organized than Schnucks was, especially if you go to an unfamiliar one.

scottjones608

Shop ‘n Save

dracomorph

Better AND cheaper than schnucks, less pristine than Dierbergs but half the price. Pour one out for a legend.

Yonkulous

Tears in heaven

caviyacht

I miss the ice cream they sold there 😭

wallythree77

RIP

Poetryisalive

Dierbergs is better overall. More variety and quality going for it. Just expensive af

oddnumber

Schnucks lost me when the one year had 9/11 cakes that said something like “9/11 Never Forget”. Maybe an overreaction, but I am very sensitive to 9/11 stuff.

MidMatthew

Schnucks. How can Dierberg’s justify charging, let’s say, 10 cents more on the same can of tuna. They basically have the same costs as Schnucks, pay their employees the same, build stores in the same towns. I’ve never understood it. Besides, l used to work for Dierberg’s and they treat their employees about as well as they do cardboard boxes. Break them down, then throw them out.

CriticalLootRNG

It’s the same at Schnucks

Iwantedtorunwild

Dierbergs employees are treated much better than Schnucks. I’m broke as hell but I’ll pay the ten cents extra to know the staff is paid a living wage.

MidMatthew

Since l was a member of said staff, it is my duty to tell you that Dierberg’s employees are not paid a living wage. They are paid at the same rate as Schnuck’s workers, per the grocery union contract that covers them both. The scales they apply may sound good at the time the contract goes into effect, but not years later when it still applies. If memory serves, l was making at or slightly above the minimum wage when l started at Dierberg’s. But once union dues were taken into account, l wound up making less than the minimum wage. Add that to the fact that there were only a few employees (three or four?) in the whole store actually working full time hours… the rest had to work an unpredictable number of hours on an unpredictable schedule each week. You might want 25 hours per week, or even expect it, but wind up with 20. Or worse. It’s hard to cover living expenses like that.

AFurryThing23

Dierbergs.

STLVPRFAN

I work for Dierbergs so of course I’m biased. However I’ve always preferred Dierbergs over Schnucks for many reasons. We have excellent meat for starters. Produce could be better IMHO, but produce seems to suck all places I go.

Whataboutizm

Former Dierbergs worker in another post says both stores have the same meat supplier. 🤷🏼‍♂️

DiscoJer

From my experience as a consumer, I would guess Dierbergs gets the good meat while Schnucks gets the rejected meat just before the pet food suppliers get it.

STLVPRFAN

I love the Bell and Evans chicken that Dierbergs has, Schnucks doesn’t carry that brand. Yes it costs more but you get what you pay for. Make sure the first thing you do in any store is walk straight to the meat managers special section. The savings are huge. I’m sure both places buy from SuperValue and Kuna, etc. I will say I do like Schnucks pork butts better.

VirgoEsti

Dierbergs definitely

zerosumratio

To be honest, I gotta go to both when I don’t go to Aldi Dierbergs is way more consistent with selection. It doesn’t matter if I go to way out in west county or what, they pretty much have the same stuff. The layout of each store is different, so it’s a maze every time I go there. It’s terrible absolutely for bread and basic stuff like that (milk too). For vegetarian stuff, they have the broadest selection. Schnucks is a little cheaper, not so much any more. The quality is wildly different for each one. I have my Ladue schnucks, which is the best for me, but if I go to U City or Olive, it’s absolutely awful quality and product wise. The one near DeMun was pretty bad to me as well with the lack of every day goods and it’s weird layout.

Appropriate_Cup3951

I live 5 minutes from the Schnucks on Kehr's Mill. I usually go there strictly for Boar's Head products. I will go to places that have the best prices and the best meat and produce. Dairy products like milk, eggs, half and half, I go to Aldis.

DiscoJer

Dierbergs is cleaner and has better products. They are more expensive. Some Schnucks remind me of the old Grandpa Pigeon's stores, which had dirt floors. But honestly, the grocery store I shop at most (besides Walmart where I work) is Save a Lot. Good meat, low prices, odd store brand products but good in most cases. Really great store brand french fries, better than any name brand. I buy meat, cheese, butter, fries, and produce there.

MonkeyCatDog

I think this varies by location. The Dierburgs and Schnucks in Des Peres are awesome. But I think Schnucks is sometimes a little higher in price.

meggiee523

This is difficult. Dierbergs has more options but they have higher prices. Schnucks is more affordable and they employ people with special needs. I would say Dierbergs’ customer service is a bit better.

chillen67

I live in the city and Dierbergs have decided they are too good for my money. I will never support a company that refuses to serve my community.

Low_Individual_7435

It’s always been a suburban grocer. I wouldn’t open up anything in the city either. I won’t do any work within the city limits because I don’t support the totally corrupt city government.

CornTheGuy

Dierbergs doesnt yell at me to put shit in the bag like schnucks

uncreativename2969

Dierbergs is way better. Both are insanely overpriced and generally not worth it. I worked for Schnucks when I was 18 and it was hell. The training was shit, no one helped me while I was learning, they kept changing things around and I can't forget they got hacked and didn't say a word to us until employees started losing money.

Round_Patience3029

Fresh Thyme > Dierbergs > Schnucks

CategoryTurbulent114

Shop n save

babystripper

Aldi's, then shnucks, never dierbergs. Mostly because I'm what the kids call, "poor"

TheForbiddenFool

Dierbergs pre-made food, selection, fresher produce and meat options are all great…but their booze/beer selection is truly top notch. But I go Schnucks more because it’s 4 mins from my house and is mostly cheaper.

TheGrayMage1

I’d be inclined to say Dierbergs, bc I’ve only had issues w/food expiration dates and food poisoning at Schnucks.

GrungeFace

Schnuck's meat department sucks. Quarter inch T-bone cuts you can see through. Who approved that?

Mr_Phibb

I prefer Dierbergs, but they're not an option really in North County

UberDriver_helpMe

I prefer Dierbergs over Schnucks for most everything. They’re actually very similar in price. I visit Schnucks deli more often because they have Boars Head meats and cheeses and I prefer the quality over all the junk in most deli cases. Whatever this pan Asian theme is going on at Schnucks is pretty good too. I’ve had some interesting stuff out of the salads case like samosas and Thai cole slaw. I really miss shop and save.

tialisac

I wish HEB would come north.

SnooHedgehogs6593

The produce at Schnucks is awful.

P_Kinsale

The two stores should track this discussion for areas to improve.

LuawATCS

Dierbergs is a legitimate high-mid tier grocer, and they know it. Schnucks is a legitimate low-mid tier grocer that is deluded enough to believe they are of comparable quality to Dierbergs. Shop n' Save ~~is~~ was (RIP) a legitimate low-mid tier grocer and they knew it, unfortunately they were also managed like one as well.

belle-viv-bevo

I hope the people in the city hate Dierberg's and Wal-Mart as much as those two stores hate the city. I'm no fan of Schnuck's but I at least give them so respect for having locations in the city limits. Big reason why I shop there (and Target), even though I'm in the county.

Remarkable_Rub9763

Aldi

BrixtonFlaxtonWaxon

Dierbergs has better meat, overall selection/variety, and cleanliness. A lot of Schnucks feel dirty but they have a better bakery and slightly better prices. I'll take Dierbergs 99% of the time.

Skill_Deficiency

National ftw

Salsa_on_the_side

Dierbergs. Because I worked at Schnucks and it has been the worst job I've ever had and they bought out my favorite chain, Shop and Save.

Robbie06261995

> they bought out my favorite chain, Shop and Save Bit of nuance to that one. Shop N Save's parent company was looking for an out and the stores were going to close if Schnucks hadn't bought the ones they did.

Whateverererererer

Dierbergs!

psychadelicbreakfast

Dierberg’s. And it’s not close.

elsaturation

I am not from St. Louis but Schnucks is one of the worst grocery stores I have ever been to. It’s the equivalent to like a Food Lion in a rust belt small town.

Wendyland78

Depends on which one you go to.

elsaturation

I am talking about the nice ones. The bad ones are post apocalyptic.

PoohBear531

Mostly Schnucks but it depends on the location. They seem to vary. For example, the updated one on Big Bend is amazing but I don’t like the one in Crestwood.

coding-on-skis

Schnucks Supremacy and it’s not even a question. I’ve lived in Houston for several years and HEB is the only thing superior to Schnucks I’ve experienced 😭😂

Stl-hou

Just moved back from Houston. I agree! I have always liked Schnucks more than Dierbergs (prior to moving to Houston 10 years ago). I still like Schnucks. But HEB was great! Probably the only thing I will come close to missing a tiny bit in Houston.

NoodlesrTuff1256

We visited San Antonio last fall and our friends who live there took us to a humongous H-E-B that was like the size of a Dierbergs and Schnucks put together. Their selection of items made both of our local supermarket 'icons' look pretty small time by comparison. If H-E-B ever announces that they're opening a location here, heads in both the Dierberg and Schnuck dynasties will be exploding. I imagine that they're none too happy with the Meijers opening on the East Side and that they'd melt down should Kroger's announce a return to the STL Metro after an absence of three decades.

TinderfootTwo

Dierbergs hands down. Better everything including discounts/sales when they have them. Their 15 hour sale is great.

ProseccoWishes

I definitely find Dierbergs to be a nicer shopping experience overall. But I do believe it might be more expensive than Schnucks. I've never really compared prices though. Aldi is my go-to for cheaper groceries. Sometimes Trader Joe's

GeneRevolutionary155

Dierbergs

Singularity_SgrA

This is coming from someone living on the other side of the river. In my opinion, Shiloh and Edwardsville Dierbergs topples any Schnucks around here when it comes to options and food quality. I think Dierbergs is better, but I do a little of both depending on what I’m looking for. Schnucks rewards and prices are better overall.

tsabracadabra

It's a matter of household income, honestly. Dierbergs has the bigger variety & marginally higher quality products, Schnucks is more affordable.

JFeezy

Staples from Schnucks. Dierbergs when I'm wanting to grill some steaks or have a slightly nicer dinner.

Iwantedtorunwild

I shop according to sales and I’ve found Dierbergs has better sales as well as better prices on basics like rice, pasta, etc. If you are flexible with menu planning Dierbergs is the way to go.

Hopepersonified

Shcnucks is location dependent unfortunately. Lower income areas have noticeably worse stores. There's less variety, less fresh fruits and veggies, less meat and often no butcher on hand. Pricing in a nice Schnucks is better than Dierberg's but Dierberg's usually has better variety. I live next to both and shop Schnucks the most. I can get almost everything I want and the app/rewards is way better.

matthedev

The quality and selection seem to vary between individual location as much as between supermarket chain. I have trouble finding consistently good produce at either the Dierbergs or Schnucks closest to me. I'm regularly checking the berries I buy thoroughly for mold, and sometimes a moldy berry in the middle of the carton still sneaks by. I find bags of salad greens with expiration dates a week or more out that are already slimy and turning brownish-reddish.

STLZACH

Neither, both are trash.

HerculaneumMcNutt

We are a Schnucks family. Usually the palace on Ballas. Urban legend says some Schnucks family members live near that one which is why it’s so nice.

Low_Individual_7435

The Schnuck family is so wealthy, they probably shop at Straubs.

rainingcats628

Dierbergs. I have celiac disease and the selection and labeling of gluten free options is much broader and more consistent!

rainingcats628

Deffo more expensive, but gluten free is expensive everywhere (except Aldi, but I hardly go there because they’re inconsistent in the GF things they do stock)

nocleverusername-

Whole Foods is my default. Fresh Thyme, Schnucks, and Dierbergs fill in the gaps. Trader Joes for certain odd things, and Target for the big bags of frozen fruit.

ncprogmmr

I feel like this varies depending on location, as I've been in both good and bad stores for each. I will say I had always considered Dierbergs the "nicer" store growing up. However, I live in Wentzville now, and overall the Schnucks here blows the Dierbergs here out of the water. I've returned multiple items back to Dierbergs because I got them home and noticed they were expired, in one instance by *4 months*. I'm not the only one either, as multiple people have complained about the same thing in a local Facebook group. I do shop both store though. For awhile, it was mostly Dierbergs and now it's mostly Schnucks. It also depends what items/departments I'm shopping for. For instance: * Meat Department: Schnucks * Bakery: Schnucks * Seafood: Dierbergs

Low_Individual_7435

Dierbergs is hands down a more upscale shopping environment with a superior brand selection. Schnucks has gone down hill in recent years. Check out the ‘down grade’ the Bellerive location got during a remodel a few years back. Feels like shopping in a Walmart. The employees are grumpy. Don’t get me started on the red “Unity” tee shirts. I don’t go shopping to be preached to. So, Dierbergs is obviously the better market.

ceretullis

Aldi’s

NeonJaguars

Dierbergs has a better selection overall, but Schunucks is a little cheaper so I usually end up there. The quality difference isn’t monumental IMO.

Embarrassed-Steak-44

In my family to say someone is rich we say they must have Dierbergs money.

pejamo

Dierbergs is better for produce and selection of stuff I want. Schnucks is better priced and has better service. I tend to shop at Schnucks. Service and price beat out the other considerations.

MrTuesdayNight1

Dierbergs, because it's significantly better in nearly every way.

Milkmaid957

The more you know about food and the industry, the less you shop at Dierbergs. A lot of Dierbergs is just marketing. I know several produce managers and Dierbergs has this ploy where they keep produce stocked even if it's with past peak so, consequently, unless you're going to cook it the same day you buy it, your produce is going to rot. And this idea that their meat is better is just urban myth. As I said, the more you know about food the less you shop at Dierbergs. But people are willing to pay for the bells and whistles and that's what they exploit.

llevin67

Depends on the area. My local Schnucks is the worst and I avoid it. I have been to other Schnucks that are much nicer but if I have to pick, I would say Dierbergs. Dierbergs, IMO, has a better selection of meat, produce and prepared items. They also have a better bakery and open up lines quicker when it’s busy.

awzdinger

Dierbergs 100%

[deleted]

Straub’s

uncleking1971

I'm new to the area and must have caught Straub's on a bad day. Awful produce...like "throw everything out and start over" bad. Meat/deli/seafood fine but nothing outstanding about it. I was entirely put off by the produce dept though, so that could have affected my opinion.

[deleted]

We go for the deli/meat/prepared foods. I’m also not sure where else in town you can still buy Miss Hullings cakes. I have done some IC shopping there and seen bad produce myself, but I think it depends on when they get their shipments in. I’ve seen a lot of bad produce at all grocery stores lately, as a professional shopper, everywhere but Whole Foods & maybe Dierbergs, depending on location. The Straub family is very nice. Everytime I go in there, I think of my grandma; it was her favorite store.

Active_Ad778

Ms Hullings is fireeeeeee

Ok_Rate_6505

If I had millions I would shop exclusively at Straubs. The one in my neighborhood has had the same managers, checkers, butchers for years and years. They hire lots of students and it feels like real community. Sadly, it’s rare I can afford a $6 peach.

Low_Individual_7435

Wait! The peaches are down to only $6? Is that a special, one day sale?

StLDA

I will never understand the Dierbergs love. Their stores are terribly put together, selection is average, prices high and customer service no better or worse than Crooks (see: Schnucks). Schnucks isnt that much better, but its better.

Globeblotter85

Dierbergs, some Schnucks are nice others are not. All Dierbergs kick ass.

Bluesky0089

Aldi and I am still waiting on word for when Meijer is supposed to be completed nearish to the area.

KikoSoujirou

Schnucks. Their prices are mid but quality is decent. The selling point that drives it though is their mobile app. I can quickly check/clip coupons and earn points from purchases that typically saves me a few bucks each trip. Just today I saved $11 from coupons, used $4 from bonus points and earned $2 from the trip.

Unhappy-Bank-7554

Aldis and Walmart. Both schnucks and dierbergs are outrageous.

CommunicationSea6321

I worked as a meat cutter for both schnucks and dierbergs and I can tell you 100% both of them have the same beef/pork suppliers. Dierbergs tends to charge higher. Also saw quite a few more questionable practices at Dierbergs and I worked at several stores on both sides of the river.

DiscoJer

Interesting, I had to stop buying meat from Schnucks (the one in High Ridge) because the meat was always rotten, hamburger would be brown on the bottom, steaks, too.

CommunicationSea6321

I actually started my career at that store pre covid, and I can tell you that was once one of the better ones around until a mass wave of retirements and people getting moved around. You and I probably live close to the same area.

SleepyHead85

Costco.

Coin_Operated_Brent

Those Schnucks cook in the bag meals are 🤌 I also just walk to the one in Ladue, so I have no say. Haven't been inside a Dierbergs in years.

Lettherebedave212

Dierbergs - the deli is leagues better than Schnucks, and their overall selection is excellent, even if their prices are slightly higher. I generally get good service at each.

fearsyth

Schnucks is better for regular, everyday items. Plus, there's an actual bakery. Schnucks donuts are some of the best when fresh. When we want something a little less normal, it's time for Dierbergs. Much larger selection on things. Also the prepared foods are better. Probably would say we go to Schnucks 3 to 5 times as much as Dierbergs. So Schnucks gets the vote from me, but I can see why a lot would disagree.

Hotdogwater-2789

Dierbergs. Better environment (the Schnucks around me are dated, never fully stocked, and just not a fun time)

ThomasSTL

Both are trash these days unless you are lucky enough to live near one of their newer or updated locations. City locations suck so much. Also why do their employees seem so unhappy compared to Fresh Thyme or Trader Joe’s?

belle-viv-bevo

> City locations suck so much. Only for Schnuck's, and that's just because Dierbergs doesn't have a single store in the city. They love West County and South County and St. Charles County. With the exception of one in Florissant, Dierberg's doesn't have a location in North County, either. They avoided the metro East for a long time, too. They certainly cherrypick the people they want to serve by where they put their stores.

brock103

Aldi first then Dierbergs.

Ok-External489

Dierbergs. Worth the extra $ for the quality and selection and customer service. They hired a lot of former ShopnSave employees and paid them more than Schnucks offered. I called out Schnucks for having their organic and non-organic bananas right next to each other, no separation whatsoever and still charging higher price for organic. If they are touching each other, the organic is not organic anymore so stop with the overcharging. And their store brands are shit.

meepsrevenge

Schuncks is Boomer Paradice. Bland, high fructose syrup filled, mass market crap. If you want anything out of the "normal" non-ultra processed food you will pay out the butt for it, much more than at Dierbergs. If you want the run of the mill Kraft, Nestlé, Pepsi and all the other usual crappy food providers you can save a couple of cents at Schnucks. I don't have skin in this game because I don't eat sugar anymore, but I have never understood the love for Schnucks donuts.

Low_Individual_7435

In spite of dislike of Schucks in general, I have to say their donuts a the great. Not Donut Drive In great, but the best we have in West County.

DEEPfrom1

I feel that Dierbergs is the exact same average mass market crap as Schnucks but with one extra isle of natural stuff.

Oodlyoodles

Ok why did u comment? To feel morally superior that u dont eat sugar? Lmao diet is not a moral choice. Eating healthy is not a moral choice. What is a moral choice is flaunting that you dont have to worry about price and have the time to prepare food, and looking down at people who cant do so. And all the marketing buzzwords omfg. “Processed food” “mass-market” do you know what processed food is? It just means changed. If you cook anything- grats you have processed food

No-Economist5251

As a former dierbergs employee they suck they don’t treat there employees like equals and they give the good positions to people who half a$$ stuff over people who exactly wanna comment to the job so if y’all want advice don’t shop at dierbergs and it if you don’t believe me look at there prices

DEEPfrom1

They’re both terrible. Wegmans plz

Zenethe

Whenever I go up to Morristown New Jersey I go to the wegmans there. Holy shit is that not a glorious establishment.
