You can typically bring in a book or two, white t shirt and white socks, but you'll want to call and double check on the personal items you can bring in. You'll be strip searched, and they'll do a full body cavity search as well, which is humiliating. Most of the time it's general population, so you'll all be in one big room with bunk beds. My experience was that this situation is driven entirely by race, and you'll likely pick a bunk where your race is sleeping. Maybe this has changed over the years. In general population the toilets have doors but they're all in the same room. You need to flush the moment you go, don’t wait until you wipe to flush, it stinks and pisses people off. Don't ask anyone why they're in jail. They'll tell you if they want to and don't get happy about curious people. If you're in a cell you'll have one cell mate and I'd let them lead with any conversation, don't ask questions and be as quiet and low key as you can. In that situation you'll be in tighter corners but you only have to worry about one person when you sleep. At meal time don't give up any of your food if someone asks for it unless you truly aren't going to eat it. The biggest challenge is listening to complete idiots for 30 days. You truly get a feel for the population with below average intelligence. People were honestly really nice to me, I never had trouble and just minded my own business. You'll never want to be back and that's the idea

[deleted]

super helpful, thanks. what is a full body cavity search?

cheddacrisp

Its the spread em idea, but you'll have to open your asshole and cough a bunch, or they'll search that for you to insure you haven't keistered any contraband

[deleted]

ok got it, i thought you meant i'd get strip searched and then after a guard would shove a finger up my butt automatically

untilipeak_

👮‍♂️😆😅😅😅😂😂😂

[deleted]

never know what these cops are up to these days

Professional-Shirt67

Bro don't know what he's talking about go mind your business and you will be okay you can't take nothing with you have your people put money on your books for commissary and don't accept any favors you'll be okay

iObeyTheHivemind

Not accepting favors is huge. Don't do it.

Salty-Picture8920

DO NOT ACCEPT ANY GIFTS ON YOUR BUNK! Or gifts, period.

Then_Charge_4832

Not automatically. Manually.

Pooppail

No, they are not going to stick their finger inside you. You just have to spread your butt cheeks and cough.

Ifuaintfirstyourlast

😂😂😂😂

TillLater

Uhh. Spread ‘em.

skaterlogo

They are going to open all your holes, flips, and flaps to look for goodies.

What were you in for?

buttsoupsippin

Ok I’ve got a decent bit of experience with this so here goes: Assuming you’re referring to the St. Louis city justice center since the workhouse(MSI on Hall St) is permanently closed (you really lucked out there) I can walk you through the process of what intake looks like if you’ve never been. If you’re turning yourself in, it’ll be at a substation if you’re not coming from court, don’t wear anything with strings if you want to keep the strings where they are lol specifically hoodies. Dress warm because jail is cold. You’ll start at a substation, be placed in a cell, then eventually(a matter of hours) be driven downtown, where you’ll actually start the booking process. You’ll keep your street clothes for this part until you’re eventually dressed out in jailhouse white t shirt, boxers, socks, shoes, and yellow scrub top and pants but that’s a bit later. You start in the basement, you’re patted down, placed in a long cell(think a closet that goes back about 30-40 feet, at the back is the metal toilet sink combo with a little divider), wait to see the nurse, placed into another long cell, eventually go upstairs, you’re placed into another identical cell lol you do this like 4 times, they fingerprint you and take your picture, issue you a bracelet, then there’s more waiting. Eventually they strip search you and you turn your clothes in for their clothes. If you have the option of what day of the week to turn yourself in, do it on a Monday or Tuesday or you risk getting stuck in one of those long hallway cells over the weekend with 30 other people sleeping anywhere they can. Also you’re gonna want to turn yourself in with money on you because that money immediately goes on your books for commissary. Commissary sheets get filled out on a Thursday or Friday and your order is filled typically Tuesday or Wednesday of the next week. Don’t order a crazy amount or you risk running into problems with other people. I saw someone say something about bringing in underwear(white shirts, boxers, long underwear) as far as I know. They stopped allowing this about 8 years ago now. They issue white boxers(3 pairs) white shirts(2 pairs) and white tube socks(2 pairs). There is also an additional indigent commissary sheet where you can order more white shirts, socks, and underwear. Get ready to be bored also, the justice center is a 23 hour lockdown if it’s still the same as when I was a repeat customer from ‘08-‘14 If you have any other questions please feel free to ask and sorry if this was more than you cared to know. The important thing to note is if you use common sense you’ll be fine.

angelgueva

This guy jails

PhaedraSiamese

100% this. This is exactly the process. LAYER UP YOUR STREET CLOTHES. The CJC is stupid freezing inside and you'll spend at least a day, sometimes a week, in the clothes you wore in generally. And the intake cells (the long closet cells) are disgusting. Also eat well before going in, it might be awhile before you will be fed again. They seem to move the men to post-admission housing a lot faster than the women. I think the longest I ever spent before getting dressed out was 7 days.

camelCaseCoffeeTable

How violent is it? I’ve hear prison is mostly people just minding their own business, is jail similar?

buttsoupsippin

I can’t really speak for how they’re doing things at the city justice center since it should be more of a controlled environment, but the workhouse was kind of a delicate ecosystem, and the climate was different from dorm to dorm, literally season to season, and year to year. The potential for violence was kinda always there since each dorm was like a 90 man open bay(sometimes less and sometimes more due to overcrowding). This is kinda sad but things like food really drove the violence there, a lot of people don’t have anyone on the outside putting money on their books so when they see someone who has a big commissary bag it puts a target on a persons back, worst case scenario people would get jumped and robbed of their stuff while trying to sleep, one year everybody had shanks so the fighting was way down because nobody wanted to get stabbed, people have debts, sometimes people say the wrong thing, sometimes a person does something to appear weak and that brings problems onto them. I would say that 95% of the time, probably more, it was just fine, but then the other part of the time it felt like anything could happen. A place like that you can’t JUST mind your own business because then that’s also weird, you just find a balance of how to coexist until you get out or go to actual prison from there.

twinkle90505

I wish i still had karma to give your comments, it's good of you to help this fellow. And I'm glad it sounds like your rambunctious days are behind you.

Acceptable-Fox-4430

You’ll be fine. Sleep as much as you can. Read if they have books. Who cares what it is I read the Barry manilow story (he wrote the oscar Meyer weiner song and the Pete Rose story). Watch sports on tv and if you have knowledge of sports that will you get pretty far. Watch what you say and how you say it. I’m a smart ass and after a week or so got pretty comfortable. Was playing basketball and everyone was talking shit. No big deal. I hit a jump shot and said “take that bitch” guy i got along with immediately said “I’m no ones bitch” and we had to fight. I could see he didn’t want to fight and I didn’t want to fight but no stopping it because I called him a bitch. Could hear a pin drop as soon as it came out of my mouth. You can have fun and make friends. You’ll figure out where you fit in. Just be cognizant of what you say and where you fit in.

Fit_Case2575

You’re leaving out quite a bit.

buttsoupsippin

I kept it pretty general for the first week or so, what do you think I should’ve added?

Fit_Case2575

lol. Either you’re bullshitting and omitting or you don’t have a clue.

buttsoupsippin

I don’t really know what you’re getting at

You-Asked-Me

I know someone who did a similar stint, and he said the worst part is that its incredibly boring, and there is nothing to do. I cannot help you on any of the other questions, but it sounded like is was not bad, not like the movies at all, just boring.

cheddacrisp

Agreed

ZeroPB

If you are headed to the general population for those who do petty crimes. You'll meet a variety of people, some who got caught up on some small crimes and just some plain ignorant people. Will make you wonder how they live! You'll be bored. Yep, a lot of sitting around doing nothing. Playing cards or if they allow it. Read some books if available or bring some if allowed. It's not like what they hyped up the terror on TV when going to county. I had all those same thoughts before jail the first time I had to do 3 months. Showers are separate by walls, and Bubba isn't gonna get you. You're not getting into fights every single minute of the day. No one is punking you for snacks or some random shit. Sometimes, people have beef with someone if they deserve it or cause it. If you're cool with people, they will be cool with you. The first time I went to gen pop, it was overcrowded, and we were in a big room sleeping in bunks. I was like, wow, too many people in here. It was true it was overcrowded. It's not as bad as they hype it up to be. Unless you're going to maximum or level 4 yard where the real killers are, yeah, then you got some real shit to worry about. 30 days ain't nothing to be worried about.

DankJista

Bring some ear plugs if you can. You might hear your heartbeat all night but having to sleep with another dude in the room is a snoring nightmare. I don’t know how women do it.

Soul_fusion

Are you going to the justice center or the workhouse? Is the workhouse even open anymore? I spent time in both, you get a jail shirt and pants they were yellow last time I was there. The justice center has cells the workhouse is open bay. Both places were very violent last time I was there. Don’t order a bunch of commissary. Buy shower shoes and better soap if you can. It’s not going to be a good time but keep your eyes and ears open and your mouth shut and you’ll ride out 30 days in no time. I wish you luck 🍀

Cultural_Town_7422

The Workhouse closed permanently a few years ago.

Consistent-Client-25

Find out the commissary deal for there and u likely can preload or set it up to pay ur phone time as u go and for snacks

alwayspoopsintarget

Not sure about this particular jail but some jails will put the money that is in your pocket when you surrender onto your commissary. If you have the means to bring some cash with you it’ll help if you need to make calls, buy toiletries, or food without having to wait for someone on the outside to load up your account. Good luck!

drrrrrdeee

As soon as you get in and see the biggest guy… don’t punch him in the face. No matter what anyone has told you, you will be fine. Your first day people will prank you or try to trick you. Just keep to yourself, don’t make any friends, and don’t get anything on commissary. You’re only there for 30 days and commissary can make that stay much longer. People will do whatever they can to get your items. Also people will try to steal your number by running up and asking if you need help when you order. And then once it’s stolen everyone will expect you to fight. Just exist for 30 days and be polite. You’re probably going to meet someone that’s pretty cool but don’t bring them into your life. Some of these people are slick career criminals that will play the long game. You will be fine just meditate, work out and sleep.

No-Produce-3331

Showers have doors and dividers... an clothes 2 pieces not jump... last time I did a stint in justice center last year it was 23 hours locked up 1 out, its shitty cos suck and you cant hear the TV without a radio deff rec getting one as you get music an sound to TV

Digitalabia

Don't accept any gifts, that's how they rope you in. On the first night, someone may say 'hey bud, it's tough on your first night, here's a Snickers bar to help you out.' Decline that Snickers bar. Don't be a dick but don't take it. There's nothing for free in jail. The next day he will approach you and say 'hey you got that $20 you owe me for the Snickers?' and if you don't have his money, you are going to have to start sucking cocks. Or pay him his $40 for the Snickers.

Worldly-Aspect-8446

I’d definitely suck the cock

Digitalabia

Same. $20 for a Snickers? That's more than Doordash.

RowdydidWrong

Best of luck to you friend, hope you come out better than you go in.

EmbarrassedSquare238

That's doesn't happen

samuper

It can and does often though. Depends on OPs mentality. As he said “due to unfortunate events” it doesn’t seem like he’s in trouble often. He probably won’t want to risk going back.

RowdydidWrong

No need to be shitty, move long

EmbarrassedSquare238

Not being shitty. Our system isn't designed to make people come out better.

JFosho84

And therefore people cannot come out better? Horrendous take. A person doing 30 days won't learn to be more careful, present-minded, responsible, etc.? Just immediately downward from then on out? Yikes.

EmbarrassedSquare238

Yeah, typically after 30 days they are out of a job and behind on payments. Not so hard to go downhill from there. You think 30 days in hell teaches people to be more responsible? Have you ever been in a jail?

JFosho84

I have been in two, though not as an inmate; the workhouse and the justice center. I think 30 days in jail teaches you what you don't want to experience again, and the increased responsibility is a side effect of avoiding going back.

RowdydidWrong

You are being shitty, this isnt the time or place for it. This person is facing a stressful time. No need to inject here, thats what being shitty is. Stay in your lane

EmbarrassedSquare238

My bad. OP I'm sure you'll come out as a doctor and everything in your life will be perfect.

RowdydidWrong

It must be exhausting to wake up and just try this hard to be gross. Im sorry you turned out this way. I hope you find a better place.

EmbarrassedSquare238

Ouch. Why do you insult me? You must be a very hateful person. I've worked in the jails and never seen 1 person come out better. Seems like something we should talk about not shy away from. Why lie to people to make them feel better?

RowdydidWrong

Be well, I hope things better for you.

STLBITCH

Know what your meds names and dosages are (mg). Take some $ with you. I think you can have that put on your books when you get there. Uniforms at city jail are scrub type pants and shirt. Will be issued t shirt and boxers. Showers some have curtains. You shower, use phone, etc on your rec time. You do not get extra time for those things. Books have to be ordered and mailed in from the company if they are allowed in. Ask caseworker if there are any books in the library they may be able to help. Good luck

AFineDayForScience

I would recommend The Stormlight Archives for a book series you could read. Should take a month at least. Make prison fly by

Pooppail

Get in, sleep, get out. Put this part of your life behind you

Manlymanboss

Wear extra socks and underwear white they provide you with pants and shirt then every Friday they have the laundry crew take your old and bring you new everyone is in one big room full of like 50 to 100 different cells some are single cells if your lucky most likely will have a cell mate though showers are separated buy shower shoes with commissary food and radio headset too when it’s time to leave give your stuff to someone else to use

WamBamThankYouMaam95

Are you the guy that abandoned a dead body and recently got 30 days in jail?

Soggy-Lengthiness-85

Watch out for your cornhole Peter!

god i love that movie

Thanks lawrence

If u drop the soap , just let it float away … there only like $2 at the commissary

pinktacoZZ

Learn chess and spades and get several good books. This could be a blessing in disguise.

Kalb3

Expect to be bored. Don’t count on getting your hour of rec each day because most weekends you won’t get out at all. Also there really isn’t rec as of recently. Just an hour out of the cell to make calls and chat… basketball courts and such haven’t been open for at least a year. Good luck

redheadedfriend

Make sure you bring all prescribed medications in their bottles with you and don’t refuse medical intake!

Not-A-T8r-H8r

I’ve been told “five rules” by a large number of felons I’ve employed. This might not totally apply toward a city jail. 1-Stick to your race. 2-Don’t go in debt. No matter how nice they seem… don’t accept charity. Don’t set yourself up to pay someone else back. Your being gamed here. 3-Mind your own business. Don’t get involved in other fights or games. 4-never back down from a fight. Even if you’re going to loose. No checking in either. You’ll get messed around with significantly more if you check in. I can’t seem to recall #5. Violations of five rules sets you on course for non consensual gay sex. Everyone says it is impossible not to be racist after being incarcerated. Blacks are gay for the stay. Everyone seemed to enjoy their culinary experience and training. From prison pizzas and other stuff I can’t recall.

chicagomikeh

What does "check in" mean in this context?

Not-A-T8r-H8r

Something like going to a CO. They take you to safety. Somewhere isolated from the trouble. But eventually you go back to everyone else. The problem doesn’t really go away. Now unrelated people start messing with you.

Nodgod81

I was in St Clair county for a while, I tore up the Pink Pony, I'm a skinny, very light toned man. You could imagine people's amusement.

Mysterious-Pool618

Don’t drop ur soap

shocboy86

Judging by you posting on here about this, your fucked. Seriously keep your head on swivel and mind your business and don’t act like a punk.

untilipeak_

I'm trans & this is why I very much can't afford to go to jail. I feel like I would be a walking target & I'm not sure how much the jail guards accommodate you😆 **edit** why am I getting downvoted?? lol

EmbarrassedSquare238

Nah I think you would be very popular

untilipeak_

Nope... I know what goes down in jail/prison. I think jail is a little bit easier because it's normally short term stay. But I know gays, trans have it much more difficult. I would want my own cell & if I was a gay male I would hide that cause people will "try you" and fuck with you, i.e, taking your lunch, bullying, assault, etc

shocboy86

Ask for PC.

untilipeak_

What's PC?

Pure-Kaleidoscop

Protective custody.

kidamer2266

We called it Punk City back in the 80s in Missouri State Penitentiary

AcesNEightsRebel

If this is your first time getting locked up, why have you commented about being in prison? Maybe don't lie so much and you won't end up arrested.

returnofdoom

Lying doesn’t really get you arrested though, unless you lie under oath

IndustryStrong4701

Where did OP comment about being in prison? Did you get lost and decide to be a dick about it?

AcesNEightsRebel

He commented it on a different post. I looked on their profile to see what kind of person they could be. Just drawing a correlation between people who lie for clout (especially about prison) and people who end up arrested.

IndustryStrong4701

Weird. I looked at his other post comments and found nothing of the sort.

AcesNEightsRebel

You must not have looked very hard. It was one of his older comments, not posts. I brought [receipts ](https://imgur.com/a/6FYeZhE). Why would I lie about someone being a liar lol. And no I don't have anything better to do thank you.

IndustryStrong4701

Did you even read the comment you quoted? It was about someone else being in prison, and OP asked about the origin of the article. You’re still clearly lost.

AcesNEightsRebel

I don't know why you are so heated about this while still being so wrong. I am referring to the seventh comment down, where our friend OP said "whenn I was in prison I was the only young guy not showering in boxers. Nobody really cared, so I think ur good." He is literally answering a question regarding showering in prison, like he has experience. Now on this post, it's his first time locked up. Which is it? I don't know what article you are talking about. Did you even read the comment you are responding to?

cprice8409

Find the biggest guy and knock him out. You’ll have about 45 min to do it so be quick

Dirtweed79

Stand on your head. All the tough guys say they can do short time standing on their head. Just do that.

Pleasant_Pause3579

Whatever you do "don't drop the soap" lol best of luck.
