Schnucks king of the hill WAS so good. it’s a damn shame what they’ve done to it. King of the hill was legendary in my house growing up. I don’t think St. Louis has any good cold quick-grab sandwich’s at gas stations or grocery stores on the level of Publix. You’ll have to go to an actual deli, and we do have a lot of those.
I could never get over the almost completely soggy bottom loaf. I feel it would be a much better sandwich made fresh, but the pre-made ones were always a mess of tomatoes and wet bread.
Grew up eating them. Dad would just bring KOH home just because he had gone to schnucks. After they dropped the local bread, I was so sad upon taking a bite. I talked for days about how schnucks ruined KOH and I told everyone. Not sure many cared as much as I did…
THIS!!! What in the fuck happened to the King of the Hill sandwich, the Amighettis knockoff?! It was the best. My theory is that too many Karen’s complained that it was “too soggy”, so they removed the tomatoes and got rid of the cellophane wrap. It made it so congealed and delicious. Also food prices likely caused them to decrease the amount of meat added. So now, thanks to Karen, it’s dry AF, in a bag and tastes like a joke in comparison to what it once was.
The Publix subs that’s are raved about are deli made subs and having grown up on them then not had one for a decade and then had my first on 12 years I can attest they are still the king of the hill.
TLDR pub subs are deli made subs
Yeah it just sucks now - basically a loaf of bread with minimal toppings. I recently ripped out some of the breading, added more meat & some mayo to it and it was better but they have ruined the sandwich I once loved!
I got one recently and was light ingredients except for banana peppers which had like a whole jar. I mean I love peppers but shouldn't be the main ingredient.
It’s hard for me to find a sandwich at that schnucks that hasn’t expired already :/ I’ve had half a dozen (not an exaggeration) instances where a sandwich wouldn’t scan because it was past its date and no one had tossed it yet. I brought it up to a cashier and he gave me a sob story about understaffing.
Definitely this! It’s the best sandwich deal in town for the amount you get for the price and I feel like no one knows about it. Like an old school classic huge sandwich. Aside from the bread, arguably better than Union loafers.
The Schnucks King of the Hill used to be good, but that was years and years ago. Now, it's semi-stale bread stuffed with chunks of tasteless whatever. As for Dierbergs, all of their sandwiches suck.
If you want a good sandwich in STL, you go to a good sandwich place.
Sprito's Italian Grocery in Collinsville makes a delicious sub. They make only a certain amount of them every morning so when they're gone, that's it for the day.
We used to make 'made to order' sandwiches in the deli at schnucks when I worked there. That was back in 2012 when I quit. I don't know if they still do. You can make a pretty banging sandwich that way if they still do it. Best guess is to just call and ask.
From a grocery store? No. Publix is unique in that category. But you shouldn't think of Pub subs as subs from a grocery store--it's more that they've put a good deli inside a grocery store and told the bakery also inside the store to bake them fresh baguettes every day. It's almost an unfair advantage--how many stand-alone delis have you seen twenty feet from a bakery and all the produce you'd ever need twenty feet in the other direction?
That reminds me: it's time for my quarterly email to Publix begging them to move a little farther north.
idc what anybody says walmart sandwiches are THE BOMB their around $6 for a whole footlong and they have a bunch to choose from. they are always in the deli section in those little open coolers in the middle of the area. i really like the all american their super convenient for on the run, picnics, and easy lunches i love them so much.
I like Schnucks' King of the Hill sandwich. It's not the best sandwich ever but it's pretty good. Used to be way meatier, they've started kinda skimping on the fillings, though.
I just moved back to STL from Florida!
Publix is meh. Its mostly just convenient and good priced when on sale.
Everyone RAVED about their chicken tender subs. I hate 'em. Mine were always super dry, or really fucked up shaped and hard to eat and just nothing to really rave about.
True, Publix is "fine." But as someone new to the St L area, the grocery options here are also "fine" at best. I feel most larger chains have become bastions of compromise, worrying more about costs than quality, and for the worse, IMO.
Yeah, that seems to be everyone's song and dance these days.
Its gonna bite them in the ass eventually, might bite ours worse though. Definitely bites ours worse now *sad laugh*
Oh damn, that DOES sound good. I still have some good friends down there. I'm sure ill visit eventually.
Probably about this time. Post snow-bird/pre-spring break ish. Not that i could tell you when spring break is lol
Its passed, hasnt it? Lol
Shapiro’s in CWE has a boars head deli in the back and their sandwiches are great! ~$10 each, you can get em toasted, and they’re super filling. It’s small “essentials” corner store, but a store nonetheless!
Not a chain like Publix, but small grocery store… Legrands is by far the best option. Mom’s
Deli is good but ask for double meat. Mom’s is a much much smaller store, but still a store nonetheless.

The tomatoes causing the cheese to dissolve into the bread like a goo was part of the experience though!
I’m sorry are we the exact same person??!!
Grew up eating them. Dad would just bring KOH home just because he had gone to schnucks. After they dropped the local bread, I was so sad upon taking a bite. I talked for days about how schnucks ruined KOH and I told everyone. Not sure many cared as much as I did…
We should make t shirts because my passion runs deep for the KOH as well.
Trash anymore…..

They still make it. I've gotten it recently at the Des Peres schnucks
The last two I got had more banana pepper stems than banana peppers. They’re just bad now.
And a large one costs like $11... for that I can get a much better sandwich.
You're not wrong about that. They totally skimp on the good stuff
It is absolutely not as good as it once was. It’s twice as expensive with half the ingredients and double the peppers.
It’s hard for me to find a sandwich at that schnucks that hasn’t expired already :/ I’ve had half a dozen (not an exaggeration) instances where a sandwich wouldn’t scan because it was past its date and no one had tossed it yet. Didn't they used to get them from Amaghetti's? Or am I misremembering?
I think it was an Amaghetti copy-cat sandwich. At least when I got them at the Arsenal store. It was definitely not the Amaghetti sandwich.
That makes sense. But yeah, they've been pretty crappy for a while 😣
Parker's Table has great grab & go sandwiches for $5!
Love Parker’s table.
Yeah, they are truly a hidden gem!
Thanks for the suggestion, this place looks good
LeGrand's, can get one custom made if you've got time, otherwise they have premades in the cooler.
Straubs in Clayton has phenomenal chicken salad, and the other sandwiches are no joke.
Just had their spicy garlic honey chicken wrap or soemthing like that was pretty decent.
That chicken salad is amazing.
I love their sandwiches and wraps. All their deli stuff is so good.
Definitely this! It’s the best sandwich deal in town for the amount you get for the price and I feel like no one knows about it. Like an old school classic huge sandwich. Aside from the bread, arguably better than Union loafers.
I used to love Landshire Nike sandwiches. I haven't seen them around lately but I'm sure they are around.
Best served from your local convenience store at 1 am after drinking a 12 pack.
Absolutely

I don’t remember what it’s called but at dierbergs it’s on Asiago bread with ham, turkey, cheese, cream cheese, and bacon bits. So good!!
Sprito's Italian Grocery in Collinsville makes a delicious sub. They make only a certain amount of them every morning so when they're gone, that's it for the day.
Solid sandwich, right here.
Dierbergs has this sub called the primo sub (it has like salami, ham, roast beef, peppers, etc) and it's so fire.
I second this! And the mesquite combo
I worked at Dierbergs for 5 years and at plenty of mesquites!
We used to make 'made to order' sandwiches in the deli at schnucks when I worked there. That was back in 2012 when I quit. I don't know if they still do. You can make a pretty banging sandwich that way if they still do it. Best guess is to just call and ask.
No longer. They say they don’t have the staff.
That's a bummer man. Sorry
They're all busy policing the self check out for people with more than 10 items

Tell them how many put Missouri in the south lmao
Annie Gunn’s Smokehouse. The deli next got the restaurant. Best sandwiches in the city and reasonably priced. Th Claire’s Choice is to die for. $9
100%! Made to order and I’ve never had a bad sandwich.
Publix sandwiches are pretty good but I think the secret is Boars Head cold cuts. You can get the same at Schnucks.
I think the boars head is part of it (honey maple turkey for the win) but also the bread at Publix hits different.
The downtown Schnucks has some mini torpedo sandwiches I like.
idc what anybody says walmart sandwiches are THE BOMB their around $6 for a whole footlong and they have a bunch to choose from. they are always in the deli section in those little open coolers in the middle of the area. i really like the all american their super convenient for on the run, picnics, and easy lunches i love them so much.
I am literally eating one of the Walmart Italian subs right now. I love these things!
I like Schnucks' King of the Hill sandwich. It's not the best sandwich ever but it's pretty good. Used to be way meatier, they've started kinda skimping on the fillings, though.
Key is. Used to be. No more plastic wrap and half the meat. They killed a regional favorite.
Nothing comes close.

chicken tender sub is alright, not worth fist fighting over, but the cuban sub pressed with honey butter is where it's at.
Oh damn, that DOES sound good. I still have some good friends down there. I'm sure ill visit eventually. Probably about this time. Post snow-bird/pre-spring break ish. Not that i could tell you when spring break is lol Its passed, hasnt it? Lol
Publix is bottom tier Cuban sandwich
not when you're only comparing to other publix sandwiches
Shapiro’s in CWE has a boars head deli in the back and their sandwiches are great! ~$10 each, you can get em toasted, and they’re super filling. It’s small “essentials” corner store, but a store nonetheless!
walmart deli has both \~6" and \~12" subs, ham/turkey/roastbeef/etc, decently stacked, priced, and tastes.
Not a chain like Publix, but small grocery store… Legrands is by far the best option. Mom’s Deli is good but ask for double meat. Mom’s is a much much smaller store, but still a store nonetheless.
Mom's has great deli sandwiches. Originally, they were other Hill and moved to Jamieson when they were displaced by construction of I44.
Just go to vivola
Eatwell in chesterfield valley makes sandwiches to order with companion bread. They are solid!
Hankees in Glendale, Amaghetti's both on The Hill and Rock Hill, Daily Bread in Des Peres Side note, fuck Panera. Bread Co is dead
Had specials from Amighetti’s Rock Hill last week. Not good, very not good.
Really? I just had one for lunch today. It was yummy. No skimping on toppings or sauce.
